Pix launches next month with a variety of films

MUMBAI: The English movie channel from Sony’s stable Pix launches on Saturday 1 April with a range of films that it believes will tell stories to engage viewers.

The films from different decades cover romantic comedies to dramas, war films and Westerns. While the lineup is reasonably strong, it remains to be seen as to how many English movie viewers tune in to watch films from the past. A lot of these films represent the mood of that period and some of their kind are no longer being made by Hollywood today.

One of the films that will be showcased is The Horse Soldiers on 18 April at 10 pm with John Wayne, William Holdern and Constance Towers. A Union Cavalry outfit is sent behind confederate lines in strength to destroy a rail/supply centre. A doctor is sent along with them who causes instant antipathy between him and the commander.

The secret plan for the mission is overheard by a southern belle who must be taken along to assure her silence. The Union officers each have different reasons for wanting to be on the mission.

Man, Woman And Child on 22 April at 10 pm stars Martin Sheen and Blythe Danner. A man with a wife and two daughters learns that he has a son. It seems that a few years ago while visiting France, he had an accident and he had an affair with the doctor who treated him. Now, he has learned that she just died and is informed of his son. He confides to his wife, she then suggest that they bring him over. While there all sorts of tension begin to arise. How will this affect them?

The channel will also showcase the Emily Bronte classic Wuthering Heights on 23 April at 8 pm with Anna Calder Marshall and Timothy Dalton. The Earnshaws are Yorkshire farmers during the early 19th Century. One day, Earnshaw returns from a trip to the city, bringing with him a ragged little boy called Heathcliff.

Earnshaw’s son, Hindley, resents the child, but Heathcliff becomes a companion and soulmate to Hindley’s sister, Catherine. After her parents die, Cathy and Heathcliff grow up wild and free on the Moors and despite the continued enmity between Hindley and Heathcliff they’re happy– until Cathy meets Edgar Linton, the son of a wealthy neighbour.

The theme of Exodus which airs on 16 April at 8 pm starring Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint and Ralph Richdardson is the founding of the state of Israel. The action begins on a ship filled with Jewish immigrants bound for Israel who are being off loaded on Cyprus. An Intelligence officer succeeds in getting them back on board their ship only to have the harbor blocked by the British with whom they must negotiate.

Pix will also showcase the war film The Beast with Jason Patric, Stephen Baldwin and Kabir Bedi. During the war in Afghanistan, a Soviet tank crew commanded by a tyrannical officer find themselves lost and in a struggle against a band of Mujahadeen guerrillas in the mountains. The film looks at the Soviet ‘Vietnam’ experience and is told for both sides.

More war comes courtesy The Battle Of Britain with Michael Caine and Harry Andrews. In 1940, the British Royal Air Force fights a desperate battle against the Nazi Germany Air Force for control of British air space to prevent a Nazi invasion of Britain.
The drama Crazy In Alabama stars Melanie Griffith, and David Morse. An abused wife heads to California to become a movie star while her nephew back in Alabama has to deal with a racially motivated murder involving a corrupt sheriff.

Fans of Woody Allen can check out Manhattan Murder Mystery. Larry and Carol are fairly normal New Yorkers who have sent their son off to college. They meet an elderly couple down the hall and later in the week find that the wife has suddenly died. Carol becomes suspicious of Paul who seems to be too cheerful and too ready to move on. She begins her investigation. Larry insists she is becoming too fixated on their neighbour. Ted, a recently divorced friend helps her investigation and Larry begins to become jealous of their relationship and agrees to help her.

  • TV anytime, anywhere with Sony’s LF-PK1

TV anytime, anywhere with Sony’s LF-PK1

MUMBAI: It’s all about taking the TV out of the living room. Sony of Canada Ltd., unveiled the next generation of its technology-leading portable broadband LocationFree TV system — an innovative, “place-shifting” software product that brings home audio/video (A/V) content to a consumer’s personal computer or PlayStation, portable gaming device “virtually” anytime, anywhere around the world.

Sony is attempting to gain market share from industry leader Slingbox with the LF-PK1. LocationFree works with any video source, including PVRs and TiVOs. Also, the software allows a consumer’s notebook to function as a remote control – changing channels, fast-forwarding DVDs and recording on a PVR from anywhere in the world.

Sony Canada marketing manager, Consumer Display Products, Consumer Audio Visual/Information Technology Group, Patrick Lapointe said, “This is clearly an example of a revolutionary wireless entertainment solution. You can watch A/V content anywhere in the world where there is an Internet broadband connection.”

The LF-PK1, which includes the base station (essentially, a router lookalike) and the CD-ROM-based software, will retail for $500 (its predecessor cost about $1,800).

What might also drive this place-shifting version is application for PSPs. At the Toronto launch, Lapointe demonstrates how a PSP in Canada can display TV stations broadcast from Japan, since the base station is located in Tokyo. As long as the PSP user is sitting in a hotspot, the streaming video or TV broadcast should be seamless. That kind of flexibility is ideal for travellers, on-the-road gamers and TV junkies, Lapointe says.

The proprietary LocationFree software works in conjunction with a LocationFree TV base station, which will accompany it in a package. When the software is installed on any notebook PC running Microsoft’s Windows 2000 (with Service Pack 4) or XP operating system, A/V content can be accessed from a LocationFree TV home base station via a high-speed broadband Internet connection of 300 kbps (kilobits per second) or higher upload/download speed.

The LocationFree TV base station allows for up to four registered LocationFree TV monitors or PCs for enjoying the so-called NetAV function. This gives consumers the option to connect a notebook or desktop PC, PSP device and an additional computer, if desired. Although only one device can stream video at a time, this capability provides the convenience of picking any device at any given moment to watch A/V content without the hassle of unplugging or reconfiguring systems.

Also, the LocationFree software allows a consumer’s notebook PC to function as a remote control so they can change television channels, fast forward DVDs and set up recordings on a DVR via the broadband Internet.

For example, when on the road, if a consumer forgets to set-up a recording of their favourite TV program, the LocationFree Player for PC software will allow them to do so remotely. The LocationFree software includes an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) and an on-screen universal remote (compatible with most major hardware brands), making it extremely versatile. The GUI makes it easy to navigate various menus and channels while reading program information.

Sony’s latest LocationFree version is poised to reshape how entertainment is enjoyed by people who want to think outside the box.

  • BBC World’s new show looks at famous Asian personalities

BBC World’s new show looks at famous Asian personalities

MUMBAI: News channel BBC World’s senior foreign correspondent Michael Peschardt is launching a new 13-part series on BBC World next month. Peschardt’s People will give viewers a chance to take a look at the lives of some of the most famous and infamous people in the Asia-Pacific region.

He spends an average of three days with each of his guests, interviewing them about the people, places, and issues that really matter to them, in a relaxed and informal style, encouraging them to open up and talk sincerely and passionately about their lives. On 1 April, his guest is actor Sam Neill (The Piano). He travels to New Zealand to visit Neill’s private country estate, who talks about his relationship with Steven Spielberg and the frustrations of dealing with Hollywood. Neill is married to a Japanese and talks openly about his multi-racial family living in a country, which he says, has sometimes been slow to embrace multiculturalism.

Attempting to explain the success of the New Zealand film industry which has recently produced the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong, he says: “It is the isolation. We have had to do things for ourselves. There’s never been a mentality in New Zealand that just because we are small, we can’t do it. In fact, it’s quite the reverse. We just get on and do things. It’s in our nature.”

On 15 April he visits classical violinist Vanessa Mae. She has brought glamour and youth appeal to classical music. She talks about the pressures of being a child prodigy on the violin. Michael spends the day with her on tour in London. She talks about the decision to wear provocative costumes on stage and of her loneliness, as well as about growing up as the child of a Thai father and Chinese mother. Born in Singapore and raised in London, she tells Peschardt about the racism she’s encountered, and what it is like to fall between several different cultures.

She reveals the price she has also had to pay for her fame, telling Michael about the fears for her safety from one fan in particular who became a stalker. “There was one guy who was stalking me continually. Very recently he had had been hanging around a lot more, coming to the front door. And it really became too much. I thought he needed help and I needed help. We called in the police and he was put away for six months and banned from coming anywhere near me ever again.”

Giving a desi touch to things, on 22 April is Bollywood actress Preity Zinta. She shot to fame as the model in the Liril advertisement. He takes a behind the scenes look at Preity’s life as she takes him on a personal tour around India’s most celebrated Bollywood film studio. She talks about the pressures of her fame, and says she really doesn’t want to become more famous than she is now, ruling out any attempt to break into Hollywood. “Why would I want to go there, when everyone knows me already?” she says.

Zinta shows Peschardt some of the colour and action that she believes has made Bollywood such a success, and tells him how she thinks India can change the world. “There are half a billion young people in this country and that makes it possible for change to happen and very fast. Most older people in India believe that everything about Western influences is bad but young people see things differently, though they still want to hold on to their Indian culture and sense of family values.”

On 6 May, Peschardt catches up with author Shobhaa De. She has succeeded in breaking down many of the sexual taboos in today’s India. She takes Peschardt around Mumbai in her chauffer-driven vintage Mercedes explaining why she believes it is so important to bring sensuality and sexuality back into Indian literature.

“I wanted to show that women should have the same rights over their lives, bodies and sexuality. Remember, India first produced the Karma Sutra. So there has been a long tradition.” However, as De shows Peschardt around her city centre apartment, it becomes clear she feels that many young Indians are going too far in embracing liberal sexual practices.

She has recently finished another best-selling book about the importance of marriage. “I have never advocated promiscuity. Marriage is important to me, and people must either show commitment to it, or not do it at all. Some people watch birds, I watch marriages,” she says.

Another guest of Peschardt will be Dr Vijay Mallya. Peschardt meets Dr Mallya, the flamboyant entrepreneur and the tycoon behind Kingfisher Beer and Kingfisher Airlines. His firm, The UB Group, focusses on alcoholic drinks, life sciences, engineering, agriculture and chemicals, information technology and civil aviation.

A recognised orator and sportsman, he has won trophies on the professional car racing circuits, is a keen yachtsman and aviator and leads an extraordinarily frenetic life.

Michael meets him at his office at six o’clock in the evening, and watches as meetings continue through to half past two the following morning. Dr. Mallya reveals to Michael his plans to expand even further internationally. “We are looking at new acquisitions,” he says, and is happy with comparisons between himself and British owner of the Virgin Empire Richard Branson. “I definitely want Kingfisher to fly internationally in the near future,” he adds.

Dr. Mallya is a man who doesn’t like to take no for an answer and expresses his frustrations with Indian bureaucracy and red tape, but he believes India’s economic boom will certainly continue. He keeps a 24-hour check on his sprawling business empire from his bulletproof Mercedes which he uses as a mobile office, and takes Michael on a tour around the city of Mumbai. “I don’t read books, and I don’t watch movies,” he says. “For me, work is fun. It’s what I do. I’ve installed a ‘can-do’ attitude throughout my companies.”

  • Another Intersputnik satellite gets into orbit

Another Intersputnik satellite gets into orbit

Intersputnik’s Express-6A satellite was launched successfully on 12 March (Moscow Time). The satelllite to be located at 80 degrees East, is positioned as a bird that will significantly improve communications capacity across Russia and was lifted off Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard a Proton launch vehicle. Under an agreement with the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC), Intersputnik will utilize the major part of Express-6A’s 17 transponder strong C- and Ku-band relay capacity.

Express-6A will replace the aging Express-6 spacecraft currently in orbit and allows Intersputnik’s customers to use earth stations without tracking systems, and providing a higher quality of services.

“The successful launch of Express-6A is the next step in modernizing Intersputnik’s communications system,” Gennady Kudryavtsev, Intersputnik’s Director General, said. “The new Express-A series of spacecraft provides a longer service life, more capacity and higher radiated power. Express-6A will carry all of the television channels currently handled via Express-6, and also will be used for new digital communications and broadcasting channels including relay in Ku-band.”

In addition to traditional services such as analog broadcasting and public switched telephone networks, Express-6A also will provide such services as digital television and radio broadcasting, Internet access and dedicated corporate VSAT-based Ku-band networks. Users of the Express-6A include such Russian television channels as TV-6, TV-Centre, AST; large telecommunications network operators (Rustel); dedicated networks operators (Insat, Sirena), and telephone companies from Intersputnik’s member nations.

The second satellite in the new Express-A series is Express-3A, which is to be launched in June and positioned at 11 degrees West. This spacecraft will replace the aging Statsionar-11 (Gorizont-26) satellite. Express-3A will allow Intersputnik to offer more satellite channels to telecommunications companies interested in transAtlantic traffic.

Russia’s Krasnoyarsk-based NPO PM is prime contractor for the Express-A-series satellites. The satellite bus is developed by NPO PM, while Alcatel Espace of France supplies the payload.

  • Star World to air Kanye West concert

Star World to air Kanye West concert

MUMBAI: Controversial, obnoxious, gifted, brash. American pop star Kanye West has been called many names, but he’s never been called safe or boring.

A hip-hop producer and songwriter, he has already won six Grammy Awards for just two albums, two years in a row. Star World will air his concert tonight 29 March at 9 pm.
He burst onto the scene as a singer-songwriter a couple of years ago. In this special, he once again approaches old music with new arrangements.

Backed by an all-female 17-piece orchestra in an intimate gig at London’s famous Abbey Road studios, he belts out songs from his albums College Dropout and Late Registration, but with a twist. It also features special guest, neo-soul singer/pianist John Legend. Viewers can also check out West’s superstar friends in the audience, like Jay-Z & Beyoncé.

Drawing from musical influences as diverse as Franz Ferdinand to classical music, West counts Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, Ludacris, Prodigy, Mariah Carey and Mos Def among his collaborators, whether as a producer or as a songwriter. His own record label, G.O.O.D. (Getting Out Our Dreams) Music has already signed acts like Common and John Legend – both of whom earned Grammy nominations alongside him this year.

He once posed in a crown of thorns as Jesus on the cover of Rolling Stone. He has also been quoted saying, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” on American television in a Hurricane Katrina benefit. He is not afraid to speak out against hip-hop’s discrimination against homosexuals, and rant about political correctness.

  • BBC to have an Easter parade in the UK

BBC to have an Easter parade in the UK

MUMBAI: UK pubcaster the BBC will celebrate Easter, a significant event in the Christian calendar, next month.

It will take viewers and listeners from traditional worship through to a modern interpretation of the Passion of Christ; a forensic examination of history’s most noteworthy religious paintings and an emotional return to the communities blighted by the Balkan War.

Live from Manchester city centre on Good Friday 14 April, Keith Allen presents a contemporary re-telling of the last few hours of Jesus’ life for BBC Three. Manchester Passion tells the Easter story through the music of Manchester, including classic sounds such as New Order’s Blue Monday and Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now by The Smiths.

In The Private Life of An Easter Masterpiece on BBC Two, three great paintings – The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci; Salvador Dali’s The Christ of St John of the Cross and Resurrection by Piero della Francesca – are forensically examined and explained. Each programme shows how particular techniques have been mastered by the artist, how complex ideas are conveyed to the viewer and how each work is a unique reflection of its own life and times.

In The Cross and the Bomb (Good Friday Liturgy on Radio 4) the Bishop of London, Rev Richard Chartres, reflects on religious conflict in the context of Jesus’ Passion on the Cross. The programme comes from St Ethelburga’s – the medieval city church nearly destroyed by the Bishopsgate bomb in 1993 and rebuilt as an innovative Centre for Reconciliation and Peace. Set against the backdrop of the recent terrorist attacks in London, this is a powerful and thought-provoking meditation.

Greater Love Hath No Man on BBC One explores the impact of the Great Plague on one small village in Derbyshire. The plague was transported to Eyam from London in 1665 and claimed its first victim soon after. As the devastating disease took hold, the villagers isolated themselves to protect the surrounding village communities. Their self-sacrifice saved thousands of lives and is a fitting theme for Good Friday.
