As Mobile 365 claims to be the only international aggregator with a local presence and premium connectivity into China and India (with over 500 million, and growing, mobile subscribers combined) therefore, it is well placed to help Skype deploy value-added services to its users, via premium SMS, thus opening new revenue streams in such lucrative emerging markets.

  • CNN doc examines the plight of illegal immigrants

CNN doc examines the plight of illegal immigrants

MUMBAI: News channel CNN will air the documentary Living With Illegals on 5 August at 11:30 am, 7:30 pm, 6 August at 11:30 am and on 8 August at 7:30 pm.

In this documentary, award-winning journalist Sorious Samura spends a month living the life of an illegal immigrant, travelling over 1000 miles in the process and experiencing the same gruelling hardship as his undocumented companions. His journey is epic as he travels from Morocco through Spain and France, finally making it across the English Channel to Britain.

Samura begins in Northern Morocco, where hundreds of illegal immigrants live in forests waiting for their chance to break into the enclave of Ceuta, a Spanish enclave at the very tip of Africa. For them, Europe means work – as one says, “I am ready to do any kind of job. If I have to I’ll wash the toilets, bathrooms or train stations I’ll be very happy. Forget I am a graduate.”

All that separates these people from Ceuta and Europe is an 8km long, 6m high fence, around which they camp. Huddled together in cold, flimsy tents and hounded by daily police raids, the immigrants struggle to survive with no food, money or peace of mind. Yet, their dedication to reach the promised land is unyielding.

Samura meets Gus and Theo, two immigrants who have decided to swim around the fence and thus into Europe, an extremely dangerous method of entry which many have paid for with their lives. The next day, news arrives that only one made it to the other side. Samura leaves the Moroccan forest for Ceuta and soon discovers a derelict factory known as the ‘Longhouse’ where those on the run from immigration authorities live. The conditions are horrifying. For these people, the dream of Europe has already turned into a nightmare.

Samura travels through several cities in mainland Spain, where he begs, sleeps rough, performs odd jobs and learns inside tricks to survive as an immigrant. He encounters Thommy, a stranger of amazing generosity who helps him raise money to continue his journey. He also meets people who try to con him out of his earnings. The world of the newly arrived immigrant, Samura soon learns, has at least as many pitfalls as opportunities.

Through a “connection man”, Samura crosses the Spanish / French border and moves onwards by train to Calais, the hub for immigrants trying to enter the UK. Samura is surprised to find living conditions and scenes of desperation as bad as those in Morocco. Arick, a Sudanese immigrant, explains, “Every second, every minute I am trying to get to England. At least in London they treat you like a human being”. That night, Samura and Arick break into a lorry heading for the UK. Once inside they must stay completely still, but after an hour of waiting they are caught and arrested.

In the end, through circumstances, both Sorious and Arick do reach their final destination. It has been an incredible journey, but was all the suffering really worth it?

  • TV Today mulls business channel, Bloomberg tie-up

TV Today mulls business channel, Bloomberg tie-up

MUMBAI: The Aroon Purie-controlled TV Today Network is exploring starting a business news channel in association with American financial and business news major Bloomberg.

The tie-up can involve Bloomberg picking up an equity stake in the proposed business channel. Even if an equity deal doesn’t happen, the tie-up would certainly be a licencing and co-branding one on the lines that Time Warner inked with the TV18 group for the English news channel CNN IBN in 2005 as and when it’s concluded.

When contacted, TV Today declined to comment.

Unofficially, though, the Delhi-headquartered TV Today attempted to play down the developments, saying such reports were “speculative at the moment.” Insiders, however, insisted work on a business channel has started.

The network has earmarked between Rs 350 million to Rs 400 million for operating a new business news channel, company sources said.

The Indian news network is targeting to launch the business channel in the first quarter of 2007, if not earlier. However, the deal is subject to regulatory and government clearances.

Last year, Bloomberg had applied to India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for a proposed television software venture, which will produce and distribute business and financial news television programmes in English to local television channels.

Bloomberg’s TV channel that was available in India till a couple of months back is off air as it hasn’t yet applied for landing rights, a new rule that’s being pursued by the Indian government to monitor TV channels uplinked from outside India.

Interestingly, TV Today Network floated a subsidiary company, christened TV Today Network (Business) Ltd, during the last financial year ended 31 March 2006. The development was communicated to capital markets and investment experts some time ago.

“Consolidated financial results (for FY 2006) include the results of 100 per cent subsidiary TV Today Network (Business) Limited, which was formed during the current year and is yet to commence business. Accordingly, figures of corresponding period/year are not applicable,” the company had said in a statement. The stock market buzz signifies that TV Today is likely to launch the business channel through this subsidiary company.

In an interview given to Indiantelevision.com in 2004, Purie had expressed the possibility of starting a business news channel.

Presently, TV Today operates Hindi market leader Aaj Tak, its English sibling Headlines Today, a Hindi version of Headlines Today called Tez and Dilli Aaj Tak. TV Today scrip closed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Wednesday at Rs 76.75 after opening the day at Rs 76.75.

  • Zonemedia looking at better unification of properties through rebranding excercise

Zonemedia looking at better unification of properties through rebranding excercise

MUMBAI: Last month entertainment firm Zone Vision announced a new global brand for the company’s corporate identity and its channels.

The company introduced an umbrella brand, Zonemedia. New logos and names for the company’s six thematic channels will also be rolled out.

So Reality TV is now known as Zone Reality. Romantica is Zone Romantica, Club is Zone Club, The Horror Channel becomes Zone Horror and Europa Europa becomes Zone Europa.

Talking to Indiantelevision.com about the logic behind the rebranding excercise Zonemedia chairman Chris Wronski says, “With ever more channels on the TV market it was important to strengthen our brands. Zone Vision had built a strong business to business name but was relatively unknown by consumers. By changing the name to Zonemedia and pre-fixing the channels with the word Zone, we are able to unify the different parts of our business. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

“By adding the word Media, we are better able to position ourselves as content providers across emerging media as well as the more traditional forms of broadcast.”

Wronski notes that with stronger programming line-ups it was also important to modernise the existing channel brands. “We believe the new branding is contemporary, strong, clean and memorable. By creating the Zone Marble logo, we have a logo which we believe will stand the test of time. The new look also gives us potential to add new territories and audiences.”

He points out that with the system that has been created Zonemedia can easily assimilate additional business without having to re-invent the wheel each time. New channels or new departments are assigned a suitable colour.

Wronski is also hopeful that the rebranding excercise will enable Zonemedia to cross promote more effectively between the different channels. The aim is that as brand equity in one channel is built viewers will be more likely to sample an offering from another channel in the same ‘group’.

“With production taking place in different countries, introducing new guidelines for the branding of each channel gives us greater control over each brand and allows us to operate similar systems of presentation around the world, constantly reinforcing the brand values. There are also cost savings by having more unified systems which we can plough back into the programming.”

Zonemedia worked with Kemistry on the rebranding excercise. Kemistry Wronski notes came up with the eye design and the branding system. The detail from idents through to promo end pages was developed in conjunction with Zonemedia’s in-house creative team. The process took approximately six months from initial design stage to launch last month.

Asked about the challenges involved Wronski says that the main challenges were those usually associated with production – devising clever, original creative which enhanced each brand; finding creative solutions which appeal to a potentially global audience; unifying different departments to support the design, whether sales and marketing in local offices, channel managers or presentation departments; and delivering to a tight deadline within the budget.

When asked for his views on the state of English general entertainment in India and Asia Wronski says, “We constantly face strong competition from the English speaking market, and are up against many popular titles. However, Zone Reality is the only 24 hour reality TV channel which features unstaged reality programmes, which tell the stories of real people caught up in dramatic situations, showing events as they actually happen.”

Asked about the steps being taken to improve upon the content on the channel Wronski says that the etam is always evaluating and striving to improve the programming line up. “We have a research department dedicated to finding out what our viewers want to watch and this is constantly fed back to the channel managers and people in acquisitions. Of course, we hope that the Rebrand will help with viewer perceptions of the channels as well as assisting navigation to better enable viewers to find the shows they want.”

Cheaters he goes on to note is the channel’s top show in Asia. “Our target audience is male and female viewers aged 16-34, with a secondary audience of 25-54.” As far as india is concerned Wronski adds that the channel is looking to have India themed fillers in the near future.

UN signs contract with Teletrax for global news, video monitoring

MUMBAI: The United Nations has announced an agreement with global media intelligence company Teletrax. Teletrax will monitor output of all its broadcast video products. Entertainment, news and media organisations that have also contracted to use Teletrax for the tracking of news video, advertising or promotional content include BBC, ABC, NBC, Reuters Television and Medialink. A number of other companies are also in active trials with the Teletrax service.

MUMBAI: In a bid to expand its presence in the smaller European markets US media conglomerate News Corp has bought a majority stake in a Turkish broadcaster.
