  • ‘They (Sony) did not live up to their promises’ : Shekhar Suman

Shekhar Suman served a shocker to the television industry by announcing yesterday that he was bidding au revoir to Sony Entertainment Television’s talk show Movers & Shakers, a programme which helped build up his personna. For more than three years, Shekhar has grilled and nailed celebrity guests in a jocular manner, while aping and mimicking famous (or is it infamous) personalities like Laloo Prasad Yadav on a show which has come to be very closely identified with him and Sony Entertainment.

Indiantelevision.com’s Harsha Khot spoke to Suman after his announcement on why he chose to quit and what now for Shekhar.
    Excerpts from the interview:

    Why did you quit?
I quit yesterday and have told them about it. In fact they were going to invest in the new sets (for the show) and since I had already made up my mind I thought it was better to do it before they sunk in money. Also it would be unethical for me to walk out when the sets are ready.

You just can’t make an actor sit around. Though we share a beautiful relationship, they had been promising me a lot of things but did not live up to their promises. They kept delaying the new format of the show. They fixed a date and even then nothing was done. I am an actor first, and then an anchor.

Are you expecting any reaction from Sony Entertainment’s side since you have a five year contract with it? Do you think there is a possibility of a suit?
I am prepared for whatever the channel may choose to do. But I don’t think there is any possibility of them suing me because both of us have an exit clause which says that either of us can move out of the project after every term. It is a five-term contract signed for Rs 24 crores (Rs 240 million) which has to be renewed at the end of February every year.

It’s so sad that a show which is so closely identified with Sony had to come to an end the way it has. It has very strong brand associations with Sony. Mention Sony and the first show that comes to mind is Movers & Shakers. But I did not have a choice. I had waited too long. It’s so sad that Sony has slipped to No 3. Zee TV has got its act together and is focusing on what it must do right. So must Sony.

We already are in June so hasn’t the contract for this term already been signed?
No, in fact it was supposed to be signed in March, but then there was further dilly-dallying about the new format. It was supposed to be signed after finalising the new format, which was postponed to 2 May after I was to return from the US. But even then it was not ready. I gave them time till 2 June, but even now there are no signs of any firm decision. All this dilly-dallying indicated that they wanted to kill the show which I would not have allowed them to do. The traffic has to be two ways. It seemed as though it was only I who was interested in driving and not they. My team was getting demoralised.

Were there any problems at the production outfit, Inhouse Productions?
No the problem mainly was from the channel. There was a lot of confusion, they were not able to decide properly. I didn’t want to be a part of the resulting chaos so I stayed away.

The show was supposed to be launched in a newer and more interactive format wasn’t it? Then why quit now?
Yes it was supposed to start from 4 May. I was in America for sometime and I was told the show would be shot in its new format after I flew back. But when I returned, things were still undecided and there was a lot of vagueness, whether one particular idea or another one would bring in enough audiences and all that.

I believe that the show itself has enough audiences as a lot of people were attached to the show. Everyone right from the prime minister, to chief ministers to other ministers like Sushma Swaraj love the show. Laloo Prasad Yadav hugged me and told me he loves my impersonation of him. So does Rabri Devi. Everywhere I went people would tell me how much they liked Movers & Shakers – be it in the US, the UK, Tanzania, the Middle East or the Far East.

Add to that there was a lot of confusion in the channel after the success of KBC (gameshow Kaun Banega Crorepati) on Star Plus. Nobody knew exactly what was happening in the company. Since I didn’t want to get into office politics, I stayed away. Many new programmes were introduced, timings were changed.

Movers & Shakers was shifted from 10 to 10:40 pm and I wasn’t even told about it till they had already decided the time slot. I asked them why was this being done and they did not have an answer. I was told that it would be shifted back to its original timing of 10:00 pm but instead the aired time was pushed further to 10:50 pm. Ever since the programme went on air three years ago the show has been getting good ratings, it had ratings of 12 TRPs then. Even now, three years later, the show is getting a TRP of 5-6 despite everything, which means it is doing pretty well.

Then again Sony was losing its identity, it was heading towards becoming a me-too channel. There was a new programming head.

    Who owns the show?
Movers & Shakers is my idea. I mentioned a stand-up comedy act to Mani (Aiyar – Inhouse Productions promoter) and he liked it. His COO Sailesh Dave added elements like the band, the interviews and made it more like the Jay Leno show. Most people like the stand-up comedy act which is essentially my idea. I will have to see what I do with it now. All the channels have been approaching me to do something. I have been flooded with calls ever since the news broke out that I was quitting.

Otherwise, what was it like working on Movers & Shakers?
It has been a very good experience working with Sony Entertainment on Movers & Shakers. TheMovers & Shakers programming team at Sony Entertainment was fabulous to work with.

Are you working on any other project?
Not right now I am not taking any projects. I am cleaning up my slate. Remember, I quit Jab Khelo, Sab Khelo a short time back. I won’t be doing much television but I will not leave it completely. I am doing a film with David Dhawan and am concentrating on my production company.

About your production company: are there any projects that you are working on?
Yes. We have Dil Chahta Hain on Sabe TV. There is one more serial that will be aired on Sahara TV in the coming month. There were two more serials but both had to be called off because of problems at the channel’s end.

Are you going to act in any of the serials that you will be producing?
Yes there is one serial that I am working on. It is about a guy and a lot of kids. It’s quite similar toThe Sound of Music.

Exhibitors include Total Sports Asia, A1GP World Cup Of Motorsport, AGFIS, Alcatel, BBC Worldwide, EBU, PGA Tour, HBO, the NBA and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

Sportel CEO David Tomatis says, ” We have opened up every corner of the exhibition floor to add more stands and it is virtually certain that we will sell all existing space in the coming weeks.

“We are continuing to focus on exciting new technologies involving the reception of sports content on mobile receivers, along with our traditional base of international TV sports. Sportel Monaco 2006 may very well be our largest market ever.”

  • For ‘networked generation’, internet central in media consumption

MUMBAI: British media regulator Ofcom has just released its annual Communications Market Report revealing new trends in the television, radio, telecommunications and wireless communications industries.

The key finding of the report is that there is a radical shift in media consumption happening, particularly among what it describes as a new ‘networked generation’.

This generation, comprising mainly 16-24 year olds, is turning away from television, radio and newspapers in favour of online services, including downloadable content – used on multiple devices such as iPods and mobile phones – and actively participating in online communities.

According to the report, television is of declining interest to many of this age group; on average they watch television for one hour less per day than the average television viewer. Of the television they do watch, an even smaller proportion of their time is spent viewing public service broadcasting channels, down from 74 per cent of total viewing among this age group in 2001 to 58 per cent today. Instead, the internet plays a central role in daily life; more than 70 per cent of 16-24 year old internet users use social networking websites (compared to 41 per cent of all UK internet users) and 37 per cent of 18-24 year olds have contributed to a blog or website message board (compared to 14 per cent of all UK internet users).

The same group also uses mobile phones extensively, on average making seven more calls and sending 42 more texts per week than the wider UK population.

Extensive use of the internet has also influenced 15-24 year olds’ consumption of other media. Their radio listening is lower, by an average of 15 minutes a day compared to the wider population; additionally, 27 per cent of those surveyed said they read newspapers less as a consequence of their online usage.

    TELEVISION
In an important change in habits, viewers in Freeview households now spend more time watching digital-only channels than any one of the five main public service broadcasting channels BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and five. However, the public service broadcasters’ own digital-only channels (such as BBC3, ITV2 and More4) continue to grow their audience share, gaining nearly 6 percentage points of total viewing between 2001 and 2005.

Subscription revenue remains the largest source of funding for commercial television, with 2005 revenues up by 8.5% to ?3.9 billion for all pay TV services, ?343 million more than total net television advertising revenues for the same period. Overall, television industry revenues increased by 4% year on year to more than ?10.6 billion.

    ONLINE
Online advertising continues to grow in importance as a mass marketing medium, attracting significant revenues away from other media.

Total online advertising revenues have increased almost eight-fold in real terms between 2001 and 2005 (from ?0.17 billion to ?1.3 billion per year). Online advertising revenue is now almost three times greater than radio advertising revenue (at around ?0.5 billion, unchanged since 2001 in real terms) and over one-third that of television advertising revenue (?3.8 billion in 2005, up from ?3.5 billion in 2001).

Broadband continues to demonstrate significant growth. Of the 11.1 million UK homes and small businesses with broadband connections, more than three million were cable and eight million were DSL – the latter up from five million in 2004. Industry revenues from broadband access were up 70% year on year to ?1.9 billion.

These trends are likely to continue as new technology and new products expand choice and availability. Unbundled local loop services – where competing providers take responsibility for the customer’s line to provide telephone, broadband, voice and television over the internet and video on demand services – are now available to 44% of the population, up from to 34% in 2005. The number of Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK also almost doubled over the year to June 2006, up from 8,500 to 14,600.

    TELECOMS
Mobile phones play an increasingly important role in consumers’ daily lives. As many UK households now have a mobile phone as have a landline phone; and for the first time, the proportion of households relying on mobile phones exclusively (10%) is the same as the proportion who only use landline phones.

Mobiles are becoming the preferred means of making calls in many households, including those with both mobile and landline phones. Some 31% of consumers surveyed now consider their mobile to be their main telephone, up from 21% in 2004. For the first time, none of those surveyed said they relied on public payphones for their main means of making and receiving calls, compared to 2% of consumers surveyed in 2004.

Mobile industry revenues grew by 9.7% year on year to ?13.1 billion, while traditional landline revenue fell by 7.5% to ?10.1 billion.

Consumers are increasingly willing to switch phone companies; nearly 34% of consumers now use a phone company other than BT for some or all of their landline services. As of March 2006 6.1 million lines used a carrier pre-selection provider for their calls (up from 4.9 million in March 2005). Of these, 2.9 million were Wholesale Line Rental customers (up from 1 million in March 2005) who no longer have a billing relationship with BT but instead pay an alternative provider for both line rental and calls. Additionally 4.5 million consumers use cable networks for their phone services.

Ofcom Chief Operating Officer Ed Richards said: “Our research reveals dramatic and accelerating changes across all communications industries.”

“The sector is being transformed by greater competition, falling prices and the erosion of traditional revenues and audiences. A new generation of consumers is emerging for whom online is the lead medium and convergence is instinctive.”

Live action from The Tour Championship on Ten Sports

2nd November: The season ending TOUR Championship is now underway and Ten Sports has live action from the final three days.

The event, which is open only to the top 30 money earners on the tour, offers prize money of $6,500,000 with the winner taking home $1,170,000.

Tiger Woods and Phil Michelson are the only two big names missing from the star studded list which boasts seven of the world’s top ten players in the 27 man line up.

Last year saw a surprise winner in the form of Bart Bryant but he will not be there to defend his title as he failed to make it into the exclusive field this year. However previous winners including Chad Campbell, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen will all be there looking to gain a second success in the event.

Another big name in the line up is Ernie Els who surprisingly only secured his place in the field with a dramatic finish in The Chrysler Championship. Despite not winning on the Tour for over two years The Big Easy could well be the man to watch out for as he has had four top ten finishes in the last six events.

And with his relaxed style his game is well suited the picturesque East Lake Course which is now the permanent home to THE TOUR Championship.

Ten Sports coverage begins at 23-30 IST on Friday.

  • Monster Mela on Star Gold

    Monster Mela on Star Gold

MUMBAI: Star Gold is launching a ‘Hollywood Monster Mela’ which would air the monster movies, Jurassic Park, The Lost world and Jurassic Park 3 in Hindi on every Saturday at 8:30 pm.

    The Original Idea:

    – The original idea for Jurassic Park came from Michael Crichton’s attempt in 1983 to write a screenplay about a Pterodactyl being cloned from an egg. The screenplay and movie never came to fruition. He had originally intended for the story to be through the eyes of a child who was at the park when the dinosaurs escaped.
    – The first draft of the screenplay had Hammond left behind on the island.
    – With every new draft of the script, there was a different set of survivors and a different set of characters dying. At various points during pre-production, Hammond, Malcolm, and Dr. Wu were going to die and Gennaro and Muldoon were going to live.
    – In the original script, the T-Rex skeleton in the lobby was hooked up to pulleys like a giant marionette. In the ending, Grant was going to man the controls and act as puppeteer, using the skeleton’s head and feet to crush the raptors.

    Firsts on the movie:

Jurassic Park was the first film to use DTS digital surround sound.
Jurassic Park was Richard Attenborough’s first acting role in 15 years.
    – Steven Spielberg got to direct the man who beat him to the Best Director Oscar in 1983 (Richard Attenborough, whose film Gandhi (1982) beat Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) as Best Picture).

    Awesome Visual Effects:

    – Director Steven Spielberg was worried that computer graphics meant Nintendo type cartoon quality. He originally only wanted the herd of gallimimus dinosaurs to be computer-generated, but upon seeing ILM’s demo animation of a T-rex chasing a herd of galamides across his ranch, he decided to shoot nearly all the dinosaur scenes using this method. The animation was first plotted on an Amiga Toaster, and rendered for the film by Silicon Graphics’ Indigo workstations.
    – The glass of water sitting on the dash of the Ford Explorer was made to ripple using a guitar string that was attached to the underside of the dash beneath the glass
    – Shots of a full dinosaur was computer-generated, but shots of parts of dinosaurs were of animatronics.
    – The full-sized animation of the tyrannosaurus rex weighed about 13,000 to 15,000 pounds.
    – During the shooting of the initial T-rex attack scene that took place in a downpour and was shot on a soundstage, the latex that covered the T-rex puppet absorbed great amounts of water, making it much heavier and harder to control. Technicians worked throughout the night with blow driers trying to dry the latex out. Eventually, they suspended a platform above the T-rex, out of camera range, to keep the water off it during filming.
    – A baby triceratops was built for a scene where one of the kids rides it. Special effects technicians worked on this effect for a year but the scene was cut at the last minute as Steven Spielberg thought it would ruin the pacing of the film.
    – There were so many wires and rigging to control the velociraptor animatrons in the kitchen stalking scene that the child actors had to literally step over and around them while the scene was being filmed.
    – The ending where the T-rex saves the day was added when the production team and John Williams decided that it was the hero of the film.
    – At one point Lex is hanging from a floorboard between stories. She looks up for a moment. The stunt double looked up accidentally while filming and Ariana Richards’ face had to be superimposed in post production.
    – The super computer used in the control room was one of only two ever built to that size (1024 nodes). The other machine was at Los Alamos.
    – Steven Spielberg wanted the velociraptors to be about 10 feet tall, which was taller than they were known to be. During filming, paleontologists uncovered 10-foot-tall specimens of raptors called Utahraptors.
    – The raptors in the kitchen scene was filmed on Joseph Mazzello’s birthday. Due to a misunderstanding, Joseph ran into one of the raptors on one of the takes and was injured.
    – The scene where the T-Rex comes out of the bushes and eats the gallimimus was actually shot on the island of Oahu at Kualoa Ranch. This was the only outdoor scene not filmed on Kauai, due to Hurricane Iniki.
    – Before Steven Spielberg decided to use animatronic dinosaurs and computer-generated effects, he wanted to use stop motion animation for the dinosaur effects and had Phil Tippett put together a short demo of the kitchen scene using claymation dinosaurs (Barbie dolls were substituted for the actual actors).
    – The blip sound on the Silicon Graphics computers and the blip on the Apple Macintosh Quadra 700 is a blip sound from a Motorola-brand cell phone.
    – The helicopter used in the movie was later involved in an accident in Hawaii in March 2001. In the accident, the chopper dropped ten feet to the ground, bounced back up and then tipped on its right side.

    Records:

Jurassic Park held the box office record until it was beaten by Titanic (1997).
    – Both the film and the book generated so much interest in dinosaurs that the study of paleontology has had a record increase in students, and interest in general has skyrocketed, and has been at an all-time high ever since.
    – The novel was published in 1990. However, pre-production of the film began in 1989, using only Crichton’s manuscript. It was widely believed that the book would be such a hit that it would make an outstanding movie. It turns out that assumption was correct.

    Truth behind fact and fiction:

    – In the scene where the survivors are crawling through vent spaces, a raptor is seen with shadows from the vents all over its body. The shadows form the letters GATC, the four letters used to denote the components of DNA
    – Ariana Richards’ audition consisted of standing in front of a camera and screaming wildly. Director Steven Spielberg -wanted to see how she could show fear.-
    – For the part where the T-Rex catches a Galliminus and shakes it in his mouth, the sound was taken from a dog shaking a toy in its mouth.
    – Sean Connery was offered the role of John Hammond.
    – The name of character -Lewis Dodgson- is a fusion of the –Alice in Wonderland– author’s pen-name Lewis Carroll, and his real name -Charles Dodgson-.
    – Principal photography finished 12 days ahead of schedule and on budget.
    – The release strategy was planned 15 months before the studio had the chance to see a frame of the movie.
    – In the shots of the gift shop, clearly visible is a book entitled -The Making of Jurassic Park– by Don Shay and Jody Duncan. This title was published but tells the behind the scenes story of how the film was made. Jody Duncan also wrote the –Making Of- book for The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).
    – When the T-Rex comes through the glass roof of the Explorer in the first attack, the glass was not meant to break, producing the noticeably genuine screams from the children.
    – All the merchandise (T-Shirts, stuffed dinosaurs, lunch boxes, flasks, etc.) shown in the film were, in some part, actually created to be sold with the movie.

‘Rendezvous’ with India’s hottest hunk- John Abraham on Star World

Tune-in to the fifth season of Rendezvous With Simi Garewal as it debuts on Sunday, February 12th at 9.30 p.m. only on Star World

Mumbai, February 6, 2006… “Gentle and romantic, also red, hot and smashing. You’re not just hot you’re on fire,” is how Simi Garewal introduces her first guest as she returns to Star World for another exciting season of her popular weekly chat show – ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’. The most successful chat show on Indian television is back for its fifth season with none other than Bollywood’s hottest sensation – John Abraham. Make sure you don’t miss the first episode of this season on Sunday, February 12th at 9:30 p.m. on Star World when Simi quizzes him on his love for bikes, Bipasha, money, fame and adulation.

    Excerpts from the interview:
Fame and adulation is something that happens outside of you. Does it change something inside as well?
John: It does to an extent… in the sense… it works two ways actually… either you become a little more secure about yourself or you become a little more insecure about yourself post getting a lot of fame. Because the more you get the more you want and that is where most of us fall, very honestly.

Didn’t you date a lot of girls?
John: I did date girls, but there were never one-night stands or frivolous relationships.

When you started seeing Bipasha you were quite unknown and today it’s you who gets the most attention. Has that changed the balance in your relationship?
John: Hmm. Not in the relationship… but, yes the projection outside the relationship has changed, you know, earlier I was Bipasha Basu’s boyfriend but today I am John Abraham. I have an identity of myself. It’s great to be in a relationship, but it is very important to be known singularly.

Is your relationship settled enough to withstand the pressures of Bollywood?
John: Our relationship is very settled. Because Bipasha is very mature. But there are pressures other than Bollywood … there is compatibility; there are other issues that are more important than just pressures from outside and I think that’s something we deal with in everyday life.

Are you protective or do you like to be mothered?
John: Well, I thought I was protective … But, when Bipasha and I argue, she always says that don’t treat me like your mother. Because you know I am always being pampered, I need food to be served, but I am quite self-sufficient when I am alone. But, I guess you take people for granted when you know they are there. I know Bipasha is always around.

Are you better brother, better lover or son?
John: Better son. I would like to believe so. I want to keep my parents extremely happy.

    Is money important?
John: Yes, money is very important. But I don’t splurge. For me one rupee is 100 paise. I have imbibed the value for money from my father. I did my schooling from Bombay Scottish, where all my mates had cars. I used to demand my father for a car. But, he always told me, “learn to travel like a common man”. Even today my father travels by public transport in spite of me having gifted him a car with a driver.

Is Bike – a female or male?
John: She. She is elegant, graceful.

So, there are two she’s in your life?
John: Yes, one keeps changing and getting updated.

    And the other?
John: The other one is constant.

  • Study on the effect of watching wrestling on TV draws the ire of WWE chairman McMahon

Study on the effect of watching wrestling on TV draws the ire of WWE chairman McMahon

MUMBAI: A study in the US on the relationship between watching professional wrestling on television and violent behaviour in adolescentsa has been published in published in the August 2006 issue of Pediatrics magazine.

It is based on interviews conducted way back in late 1999.
The study notes that there were significant correlations between the frequency of watching wrestling on television and engaging in date fighting, fighting in general, and weapon carrying for both males and females, although the relationships were stronger among females than among males. The frequency of watching wrestling was highest among students reporting date fighting when either the victim or perpetrator had been drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs.

When analysed using logistic regression, the strongest relationships were observed between the frequency of watching wrestling and date-fight perpetration among females in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. These findings persisted after adjusting for multiple other factors.

Not one to stay silent WWE chairman Vince McMahon issued a statement saying, “We regret that this seven year old junk science was re-issued. It was junk science then, and is junk science now. It took them seven years to get someone to actually read it and it hasn’t even been subjected to a peer review. There is nothing new in the study, and we think it is recycled garbage put forward by some obscure professor who finally got someone to read his paper and is trying to get his name in the media.” The WWE is contemplating legal action.

The study in question notes that for males and females, the frequency of watching wrestling was highest among students who fought with their dates when alcohol or other drugs were involved. The association between watching wrestling and date fighting was stronger among females than males. The relationship between watching wrestling on television and being the perpetrator of dating violence was also stronger among females and remained consistent over a 6- to 7-month time period.

Lending support to McMahon however is Syracuse University director of the Center for the study of popular television Robert Thompson. He finds that the study that claims correlation between viewership of professional wrestling and date-fighting among teenagers problematic.

He says, “What always worries me about these kinds of studies is that they imply a cause. This study claims nothing more than a correlation. So many people immediately see these studies, and they suggest that wrestling is causing these things, and I don’t think that is a done deal by any stretch of the imagination.”

Researchers conducted their initial interviews in the fall of 1999, sampling 2,228 male and female high school students. They concluded that there was an association between teenagers who watched wrestling on television and those who had a tendency toward violence, including fighting on dates and carrying weapons.

“Whether you can make the step that then says people who watch wrestling become more violent…is a lot more difficult to prove, and I don’t think these studies prove it” explains Thompson. “I think it would be very, very difficult to put together a study that could actually control enough variables that you could demonstrate that.”

In his own personal and admittedly ‘unscientific’ experience, Thompson said that he can recall always having 10 or 12 students in the classes he instructed every year who were really into WWE programming.
He says, “Invariably the WWE enthusiasts were among my smartest, geekiest students out there’ always the ‘A’ students who always went the extra yard on their papers. I could certainly say that there is a correlation between really good male students and an interest in wrestling. That wouldn’t prove that watching wrestling is going to make you smart, but in my particular experience and analysis, I could demonstrate that” Thompson said.

A few days ago on CNN US anchors Susan Hendricks and Mike Galanos discussed the study and addressed several emails received in an informal viewer response poll. Viewers did not seem to interpret the association between violent behavior and watching sports-entertainment, as claimed by Wake Forest researchers.

One viewer wrote in saying that he attended sports-entertainment events with his parents and other family members. In watching the in-ring action and backstage action, he always knew that it was not “behaviour that he was to repeat on his own.”

Another viewer asked, “Could it be that those who watch wrestling are already pre-disposed to violence in some way?”

Thompson adds, “These studies are demonstrating a correlation. For example, if the tree in my backyard gets bigger, the hair on my head gets thinner. There’s a direct correlation there, no question about it; one happens, the other happens. But there’s certainly no cause there, or I would’ve chopped down that tree a long time ago.”
