Actors, theatre personalities, artists in silent march at Nandigram

MUMBAI: To condemn the violence in Nandigram filmmakers, artists, actors, writers and committed citizens marched silently on the streets in Kolkata on Wednesday. Earlier they had even sent out a ‘citizen‘s statement‘ to the press condemning the violence since 6 November 2007.

Wearing black badges and holding placards reading “Shame on West Bengal Government” and “Down with killers of innocent villagers”, thousands of demonstrators started from College Square and marched upto Esplanade.

Filmmakers Aparna Sen, Mrinal Sen, Rituparna Ghosh, Goutam Ghosh, Anjan Datta, actor and playwright Bibhas Chakraborty, writer Shirshendu Mukherjee, poet Joy Goswami and painter Jogen Choudhury took part in the procession. An ailing Mahasweta Devi too walked the entire stretch.

Some foreign delegates who had come to attend the Calcutta International Film Festival joined the protestors.
