MUMBAI: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Ampas) in the US has announced that a record 67 countries, including first-time entrant Jordan, have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 81st Academy Awards.
India‘s entry is Taare Zameen Par. Jordan is competing with Captain Abu Raed. The early favorite for the top honor is said to be Italy‘s Gomorrah, which looks at the mafia. Five films will be nominated out of the 67.
Apart from the Aamir Khan film, Asia‘s other entries include China‘s Olympics documentary Dream Weavers and Hong Kong‘s action fantasy Painted Skin.
Nominations for the 81st Academy Awards will be announced on 22 January, 2009. The show takes place on 22 February and will air on Star Movies.
