Soccer & tennis trump cricket in Sports Pro’s list

MUMBAI: Even as a billion fans in India are going ga-ga over the IPL this year, and it is generating viewership record, the league has been ranked thirty-eighth on Sports Pro’s 50 most marketable properties  globally list.

SportsPro’s annual list is powered by SponsorPulse’s Opportunity Score (OS)  – one universal currency that allows decision makers to instantly compare properties based on seven key metrics: engagement, intensity, momentum, passion, excitement, purchase consideration, and favourability.

Topping the list is Fifa World Cup Soccer with an OS of 44; the Summer Olympics and the NBA are at the second and third spots with an OS of 38 and 36 respectively. The ICC Cricket World Cup has a better ranking on the Sports Pro list with its ranking at 33. In fact, the IPL and Cricket World Cup are the only two cricket properties on the list, which is dominated by soccer with 21 spots on the list. In fact, footer accounts for seven of the top 10 marketable properties. Tennis has six spots, while basketball has four spots.

Duff & Phelps has valued the IPL in 2019 at $6.75 billion, whereas the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had stated that the league contributed more than $11 billion to the Indian GDP.
