Mumbai: Today, women are breaking the glass ceiling in every sector. Beyond all this, there still exists a patriarchal mindset. Not many women are in the C-suite taking important decisions. And, of course, there still exists pay parity.

This Women’s Day, we, at Indiantelevision.com, are acknowledging some women leaders of the media, marketing, and advertising fraternity and also from other professions, who have given more than expected.

Her journey

My journey isn’t my alone; my family has walked this with me all the way. I got married very early and did my MBA post marriage. We were broke and young; my husband decided to give up his studies and work so I could complete mine. I did my MBA in marketing post marriage and began my career in retail however life had other plans with husband deciding to move to Mumbai. I received retail and broadcast offer and from there my media journey began; moving across telecom and then music and then digital.

I am one of the very few people who has had the honor of launching a broadcast channel, a telecom brand as well as an OTT platform. It was much before that OTT had become rage that I decided to try my acumen there. A leap of faith for sure, as neither OTT market was as vast as today nor did I have any experience but I have always taken chances… Today OTT is the mainstream platform for entertainment even for masses and digital revenue has overtaken broadcast revenue in many countries.  With 20+ years of experience in building businesses and brands across industries; I have been fortunate enough to work across organizations of the likes of ALTBalaji, ZEE5, Sony, UTV, Tata Docomo, Barista, to name a few.

Her Inspiration and inspiring the team

I have led teams, trained people and because I am a mother and have brought up a child, I realized people may hear words but they learn more effectively through what you do, how you conduct yourself, how you handle situations and how you lead by examples. So, if it means team is sitting in office at nth hour trying to put final touches on the project, I am there as well.

Also what helps is when you let people speak up; don’t shoot down ideas, listen to everyone; that’s how new ideas germinate and old philosophies get challenged. As a leader you should be able to consciously pick the nuggets out of the chaos and that’s in progress.

Empowerment of Women

We need women leaders, not only to be inclusive and progress but also to improve the EQ and IQ of the various industries. It’s also proven that women are more dedicated and honest when committed to tasks. Having said that I also believe true empowerment will only happen when we stop saying “Woman Pilot” “Woman Manager” “Woman Doctor” “Woman leader” and let the person’s merit be defined by his/her work. Equal pay, equal voice on the table and Equal evaluation basis merit is empowerment. Having said that Women are far better multi – taskers.
