    Spielberg to get 2006 International Emmy Founders Award

    MUMBAI: Steven Spielberg is to recieve the 2006 International Emmy Founders Award at the 34th International Emmy Awards Gala. The event will be held on 20 November in New York City. Last year’s recipient was Oprah Winfrey.

    This Award is presented for outstanding work that crosses cultural boundaries and reflects the commonality of the human experience.

    International Academy president and CEO Bruce Paisner said, “Steven Spielberg has a long and distinguished career in television. As in his movies, he has the ability to move us and entertain us in equal measure. The International Television Academy takes great pleasure in recognizing his contributions and his creative genius with our 2006 International Emmy Founders Award.”

    Spielberg’s began his career, working on Night Gallery, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Name of the Game and Columbo, among others. His TV movie Duel was released theatrically in some international markets, and his feature film career took off with the release of Jaws.

    He however continued to work in TV, creating the weekly anthology series Amazing Stories, Band of Brothers, Taken and Into the West.

    Future projects include a long-form production about World War II in the Pacific, the sci-fi production Nine Lives and On the Lot, an unscripted series that will allow aspiring filmmakers to vie for a studio development deal at DreamWorks.

    Spielberg’s philanthropic causes include the Righteous Persons Foundation and the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, and he is the chairman emeritus of the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation.

    Britain does well at Rose d’Or awards nominations

    MUMBAI: British television shows and stars fared well at the nominations announced for the Rose d’Or Best Performance Awards.

    The awards, which take place in Switzerland on 29 April, recognise work in the comedy, sitcom, soap opera and game show genres. Britain got 10 out of the 21 nominations.

    Funny man Steve Carell stars in the American version of The Office, that got a nomination in the sitcom categeory. He will face off against Peter Capaldi for The Thick of It and Germany’s Bastian Pastewka.

    Ricky Gervais who created the sitcom will receive an honorary Rose d’Or Award. Stephen Fry is nominated for his role in hosting BBC Four’s show QI quiz. Extras and The Office are competing for best sitcom.

    The awards aim to reward originality, quality and creativity in entertainment programming from around the world.

    MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Kajol is set to make her presence felt on the small screen hosting a special show on the music channel — Zee Muzic on 21 April.

    The channel will showcase The Manish Malhotra Magic at 9 pm. In the show, Kajol will share her insights on fashion icon Manish – the designer, the man and the friend. She will speak on Manish’s paranoia, along with her penchant for his designs.

    Commenting on this special Zee Muzic business head Irshwin Balwani said, “Manish has always been strongly associated with Bollywood. Keeping in mind the whole fashion season that’s been going on, be it the Lakmé Fashion Week or the WLIFW, we decided to focus on one designer as a one hour special show. And since Zee Muzic is a Bollywood driven music channel, we thought Manish was apt for this special since he’s synonymous with Bollywood like no other designer is.”

    He said, “We wanted someone who was articulate, who could present Manish correctly and knew him in and out as a person and as a designer, and we couldn’t think of anyone bigger and better than Kajol. Kajol’s is very closely associated with Manish and we couldn’t think of anyone better, who would speak about him the way she has.”

    The one-hour special will showcase Manish’s collection from Lakmé Fashion Week 2006. Kajol will also share her first experience on the ramp. Along with Kajol, Karisma Kapoor and Karan Johar, will share their thoughts on Manish Malhotra.

    MUMBAI: The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) has announced that the Idea IIFA Awards, the highlight of the IIFA Weekend would be held in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, this year. The IIFA Weekend will be held from 14 June to 17 June, 2006 culminating with the glittering Idea IIFA Awards presentation ceremony on 16 June, 2006 at the Airport Expo.

    Star Network will broadcast the IIFA Weekend and the Idea IIFA Awards 2006 exclusively across the globe.

    Announcing this at a high-powered conference held at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai, Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd revealed that the IIFA Weekend 2006 and the Idea IIFA Awards will be held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president, Dubai Civil Aviation, chairman of the Emirates Group and chairman of the Dubai Shopping Festival and Dubai Shopping Surprises.

    As always, the IIFA Weekend promises to be packed with action, with a film festival, the world premiere of a blockbuster Indian film and the FICCI – IIFA Global Business Forum, states an official release.

    MUMBAI: The UK-based Asian newspaper and main voice of the country’s Asian community, Eastern Eye and Zee Network have joined hands to host the 10th Eastern Eye Asian Business Awards. The awards, which honour the successes of British Asian entrepreneurs, will be taking place on Wednesday 19 April at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

    Organised by Ethnic Media Group, the UK’s leading publisher of weekly newspapers, magazines, websites and digital newspapers for Britain’s African, Caribbean, Black British and Asian communities, the event celebrates its 10th successful annual ceremony.     MUMBAI: Ali LeRoi who co-created the television show Everybody Hates Chris and Scott Peters who created The 4400 have been added to the lineup for the Banff 2006 Master Class sessions.

    The Banff Master Class sessions feature television creators discussing the development and production of their shows. LeRoi and Peters join previously announced speakers, including CSI’s Richard J. Lewis and David Shore of House.

    The Banff World Television Festival takes place from 11 to 14 June at the Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff, Alberta.

    MUMBAI: Aspiring directors/filmmakers from across the US will get the opportunity of a lifetime.

    Reality TV guru Mark Burnett, director Steven Spielberg Munich, DreamWorks Television and Fox will join forces on a new reality show On The Lot.

    The competition will air over two nights weekly, with an hour Film Premiere episode, followed the next night by a half-hour Box Office results show. Ultimately, one filmmaker will rise above the rest and will be rewarded with a studio development deal. The show will kick off on Fox later this year.

    Burnett says, “For me, like any person who wants to be a filmmaker, the opportunity to work hand in hand with Steven Spielberg is a dream come true. With the help of our partners at Fox, Peter Liguori and reality maestro Mike Darnell, we are going to make an incredible show about looking for the next great filmmaker by mining the growing segment of the public making their own content, and giving them the chance of a lifetime.”

    Spielberg says, “All through my career I’ve done what I can to discover new talent and give them a start. This opportunity with Mark Burnett, DreamWorks and Fox allows all of us to reach out directly to open a much wider door.”
    Fox Entertainment president Peter Liguori says, “When you have the opportunity to work with people like Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, artists who have redefined this business, you jump at the chance. In this age of digital cameras, cell phones with cameras and the Internet – with hundreds of thousands of people creating their own movies at home every day – the concept of this series is completely relevant, tapping into a cultural phenomenon as it happens.”

    Fox executive VP alternative programming Mike Darnell says, “Movie-making is completely relatable to the American public. Everyone enjoys going to the movies, reading about the movies and learning about the movies. Most Americans consider themselves amateur film critics and this will give viewers the opportunity to create the next big filmmaker.”

    After a search, applicants will be winnowed to a group of 16 undiscovered talents. The finalists will be brought to Hollywood, where they will be divided into several teams and will begin the hopeful journey toward their ‘big break’. As the competition begins, each team will produce a short film from that week’s genre, running the gamut from comedies to thrillers, personal dramas to romance, sci-fi to horror. With one member selected as the team’s director and other members helping produce, they’ll have access to the best resources the industry has to offer.

    A pool of professional writers, cast and crew will be made available, and if the contestants are resourceful enough, they may even be able to land Hollywood celebrities to star in their films. With the clock ticking, however, and other teams working with the same genre, premise or unique challenge, they’ll all need to match their vision with decisiveness, execution and flexibility.

    Each week, after the teams have battled time frames, budgets and all the usual chaos that goes along with filmmaking, their films will be shown and critiqued in front of a live audience during the “Film Premiere” episode. Judges will include a high-ranking motion picture executive, a prominent film critic and a succession of well-respected guest judges, such as directors who are experts in the week’s featured genre. But they’ll also be subjected to perhaps the harshest judge of all … the public.

    It will be Fox viewers whose votes ultimately determine which film should be left on the cutting-room floor. But, just as in Hollywood, where the director’s work and vision have an enormous impact on the success or failure of a film, not all team members will pay the price. On the next night’s Box Office results show, only the director of the losing feature will be sent home, leaving that team with fewer contestants to help produce the next week’s film.

    As the competition continues and directors are eliminated, eventually the remaining filmmakers will have to work individually, creating a new short film every week until only the most talented individual is anointed the winner, whisked away to the DreamWorks studio, met by Steven Spielberg and shown a new office … On The Lot.

    MUMBAI: The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Iatas) has announced the winners for the first International Interactive Emmy Awards.

    This was organised in partnership with Reed Midem, at the television event MipTV in Cannes, France. A channel, an interactive service and a programme from the UK, South Korea and France respectively won the first ever International Interactive Emmy Award in their category. The inaugural Pioneer Prize was presented to AOL chairman and CEO Jonathan Miller, for his contributions to the field of interactive television.

    The award for the best interactive television service went to Hello D, a service provided by CJ CableNet in South Korea. Hello D was the world’s first digital cable broadcasting to succeed in the OCAP. Hello D, a simple and convenient form of interactive digital broadcasting, offers over 100 different channels, 30 high quality audio channels, 21 PPV channels, and a VOD service.

    The best programme went to France 5’s Cult. It is a daily interactive one-hour live TV show dedicated to urban culture. Hosted by Ray Cokes, Cult targets the 15 to 35 year old demographic and offers a fast-paced anti-conformist show with a never-seen-before-in-France interactivity. Every viewer equipped with a webcam and a high-speed Internet connection could contribute, participate and react live from their homes during and after the show through the website.

    Black Cat: A game of trade and cunning, Black Cat is the Magnolia adaptation of a popular Italian card game. Three contestants race to the last card over four rounds of the game before coming to the gold pyramid and the final jackpot prize. The rules of play are simple, but contestants must overcome obstacles in each round as they compete to keep the winning cards and stay in the game. One alone will move on to the final round, where eight prizes await. Only four are worth cash, however, and whether or not the contestant wins them depends on what’s in the cards.

    In the end, the only sure winner with Black Cat is the broadcaster. This one-hour format is now airing on Italia Uno and showing a strong performance against rival Deal or No Deal in the access prime time slot. Even successful series such as The O.C. and Smallville are falling short of the audience appeal of Black Cat, which has improved Italia Uno’s ratings in Italian television’s most challenging timeslot.

    Distraction’s Gameshow Zone groups these new offerings with successful formats such as In the Dark, which airs in Thailand, Indonesia and Russia, among other countries.

    MUMBAI: Rock group Green Day, Will Smith, Lindsay Lohan and Chris Rock were among those who captured Kids’ Choice Blimp Awards at Nickelodeon’s 19th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards

    US kids honoured their favourites at this year’s inimitable kudos/mess-slime fest hosted on April Fools’ Day by actor Jack Black at the University of Califronia.

    Smith was voted as Favorite Movie Actor for Hitch. This marked Smith’s fifth Blimp. Lindsay Lohan nabbed the award for Favourite Movie Actress for Herbie Fully Loaded. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire won for Favourite Movie.

    Chris Rock clinched the award for Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie for Madagascar. Nick’s own SpongeBob SquarePants absorbed honours for the fourth consecutive year as Favourite Cartoon. Drake & Josh won for Favoyrite TV show. Lance Armstrong scored a Blimp for Favourite Athlete.

    In music, Green Day picked up a pair for Music Group and for the song Wake Me Up When September Ends. Jesse McCartney and the winner of the first edition of American Idol Kelly Clarkson won for male and female singer

    A highlight of the show was a aerial skiing slime stunt. US Olympic Freestyle Aerial Skier Ryan St. Onge nailed a gravity-defying freestyle ski stunt off a snowy slope, plunging into a 10,000-gallon tank of Nickelodeon’s signature green slime.

    Skateboarding Slime Diver Tony Hawk hosted the stunt.To the crowd’s delight, slime flowed freely throughout the show, targetting kids in the mosh pit as well as celebrities. An elated Adam Sandler got down and messy. In a climatic moment of mess, slime showers splashed down on a surprised Robin Williams drenching him from head to toe. Then in a “gotcha” moment, the impish Williams took the reins and turned to spread the goo, turning Jack Black a gleeful green.
