Indiantelevision.com introduces ‘Best Sound’ category in the 13th Indian Telly Awards

MUMBAI: Indian Television Dot Com and Dolby Laboratories have announced ‘Best Sound’ category in the upcoming 13th Indian Telly Awards. With the onset of digitisation of television services, high quality sound has increasingly become an important aspect of television content. Recognising this important industry change, Indiantelevision.com’s much acclaimed Indian Telly Awards has announced the inclusion of the ‘Show with the Best Sound’ category in its 13th edition. The sound category is being instituted in collaboration with Dolby Laboratories, a pioneer in audio technology.

“Indian consumers have become more discerning today,” said Indian Telly Awards founder and creator Anil Wanvari, who is also the member of International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (International Emmy Awards).

“While watching a show at home, these consumers want a similar sound experience to what they get in a cinema hall. And this has become more important with over three million HD TV subscribers in India. With an aim to meet this need of discerning viewers, broadcasters have started investing to make shows sound much better. This trend is bound to increase with the spread and increase in the number of HD channels, digitisation, DTH and digital cable TV. We at the Indian Telly Awards are extremely delighted to introduce the sound category and are grateful to Dolby for collaborating with us on the initiative,” he added.

A jury consisting of top names in the sound industry will take into consideration the entire gamut of the sound production process—location recording, sound design, mixing, rerecording, editing—to give the award to the one TV show with the best sound design and mixing. The jury will include Academy Award winning sound mixer Resul Pookutty; National Film Award winning sound designer Bishwadeep Chatterjee; Dolby Content Services Engineer Bhaskar Pal and Anil Wanvari.

“It gives me immense pleasure to know that sound is being recognised as an award category in the Indian Telly Awards,” said Bishwadeep Chatterjee. “This would not only give a huge morale boost to the sound technicians but sensitise the producers, directors, actors and the public by and large to a relatively much lesser known yet very important aspect of television. Thanks to the initiative by Dolby, we can look forward to great sound quality, which will hopefully enable the producers to keep a substantial budget and time for the sound department.”

Resul Pookutty commented, “Being a sound designer, I am very glad that the Indian Telly Awards and Dolby together are giving sound the due recognition which it very well deserves. I truly believe that this initiative will help raise awareness about the importance of good sound in television, which in turn will make audiences more interested in newer TV shows. I hope to see more such initiatives and importance being given to sound in Indian television shows going forward.”

Dolby Laboratories India country manager Pankaj Kedia said, “We are very excited about this announcement, as this award will give the due recognition to sound in the broadcast industry. Dolby has participated and contributed in the transformation of sound in the Indian cinema and television industry. It gives us great pleasure that the role sound plays in storytelling and engaging the audiences is being given the due importance and recognition.”

The Indian Telly award for the category of ‘Show with the Best Sound’ will be announced at the gala event on 9 September 2014, at Mumbai’s Film City.

  • ‘Bigg Boss’ gets Snapdeal as its new presenting partner

‘Bigg Boss’ gets Snapdeal as its new presenting partner

MUMBAI: Controversies and criticism is nothing new to the show, on the contrary it survives on it.

Bigg Boss, which will soon air its eighth season, has been a hit since its inception and managed to pull enough viewers every time, thanks to the fights and love affairs between contestants.

The reality show, a premium property from the Colors bouquet, is coming back with a new appeal. The two teasers of the programme have already hit the television screens with the first one aired on Independence Day.

Clearing all the speculations and rumours of Salman Khan opting out of the show, the popularly known bhai has returned as the host for the fifth time. Produced by Endemol, the first 30 second teaser of the series has Khan putting on the uniform of a pilot walking and giving viewers a salute. Soon an aircraft is shown on the screen that flies across the blue sky.

The second teaser, which hit the screen on 21 August, showcases Khan in an office wearing a pilot’s uniform once again but this time he is busy making paper planes. He flies one of his paper planes which, thanks to the computer graphics, goes on to become an original plane as it flies off into the sky.

The highlight of these teasers is that this time around the eye logo of Bigg Boss is different.  It has a futuristic look unlike the previous versions, which were more like a human eye, to match with the theme of the house. The pupil is a turbofan of an aircraft while the borders of the eye have a shiny metallic skin.

Apart from this, another different thing about the show is the presenting sponsor. After five-long years, the channel has got on-board Snapdeal as its new presenting sponsor instead of Vodafone India. It has also roped in Oppo Electronics as the powered by sponsor. According to a media planner, the title sponsorship is pretty high and would be around Rs 20 crore. . “If you look at the e-commerce space, there is a war going on television and a lot of funding is coming in. E-commerce brands are also willing to pay a premium which the normal brands might not be willing to pay.”

Media planners believe that the show is an established property and enjoys a huge fan following and the market knows it will get the ratings. “I don’t think one can say that it will be either a hit or a fail. The benchmarks are pretty much set and people who actually like the show keep watching it. Colors comes up with a new theme every season just to keep the interest levels in the show alive,” says Maxus managing partner north and east region Navin Khemka.

  • Q1-2015: Loss due to commissioning delay, own project delivery recognition for DQ Entertainment

Q1-2015: Loss due to commissioning delay, own project delivery recognition for DQ Entertainment

BENGALURU: The Tapas Chakravarti led DQ Entertainment (International) Limited (DQEIL) reported consolidated loss of Rs 12.06 crore in the quarter ended 30 June, 2014 (Q1-2015, current quarter) as compared to a profit of Rs 6.63 crore (21.8 per cent of consolidated net income from operations or Total Income from Operations) in the corresponding quarter of last year (Q1-2014) and against a profit of Rs 14.66 crore (14.4 per cent of TIO) in the immediate trailing quarter Q4-2014).

The company says that it is facing a financial strain on account of high receivables, but at the operational level it is cash positive. DQEIL claims that the current total contract value for the service/co-production projects signed and in discussions is about USD 63 million to be executed over the next 18 months. Also, the total contract value for the licensing and distribution deals signed is USD 10 million for FY-2015.

    Note: 100,00,000 = 100 Lakhs = 10 million = 1 crore

The company explains that due to seasonality of its business, the first and third quarter results are generally lower than the results of the second and fourth quarters.  It attributes the decline in production revenues to two reasons – (1) DQEIL had completed and delivered a number of projects by March 2014, and final deliveries were done in April 2014. Commissioning of new projects did not get completed by April 2014, as has been the global trend. However, DQEIL assures that the commissioning of new projects has commenced and invoicing of the same will be done only on completion of milestones. (2) Out of DQEIL’s current on-going projects, four are in-house IP, for which distribution revenue would be recognised on milestone delivery basis.
