Screenwriters Association unveils jury for lyrics category of SWA Awards 2020

MUMBAI: Screenwriters Association (SWA), the Indian guild of screenwriters and lyricists, today unveiled the final jury which has selected nominees and winners of the lyrics category of SWA Awards, 2020. The first ever SWA Awards to honour writers of Hindi feature films, TV shows, web series and lyrics will be held online on 27 September 2020.

The jury comprises of eminent lyricists such as Amit Khanna (Chalte Chalte, Des Pardes), Ila Arun (Mandi, Well Done Abba!), Kausar Munir (Ishaqzaade, Bajrangi Bhaijaan), Mayur Puri (Pyar Ke Side Effects, Any Body Can Dance) and Panchhi Jalonvi (Ra.One, Baaghi 3).

SWA president Robin Bhatt said, “Antaras and mukhdas of iconic songs have stayed in our hearts long after the curtains fell. It is time to honour and celebrate those incredible lyricists whose poetry gives language to the hidden feelings of the average person.”

SWA Awards 2020 will select two winners for the lyrics category: best lyricist for feature film and best lyricist for TV serial/original series. From 146 entries across Hindi feature films and TV serials/web series released in 2019, the three-member pre-jury shortlisted 15 contenders for each category. From among those 30, the final jury then selected five nominees for each category. These will be announced online on 10 September 2020.

SWA awards committee chairperson Sridhar Rangayan said, “Even as lyricists are currently fighting for their due credit on online platforms, we at SWA would like to acknowledge and celebrate their work. SWA is confident that the selections are perfect as the lyrics pre-jury and the lyrics final jury consists of very eminent lyricists.”

Applauding SWA Awards, lyricist, singer, producer and jury member Amit Khanna said, “These awards, judged by the writers' own peers, will in the years to come become the hallmark of excellence in filmed entertainment.”

Singer, lyricist and actor as well as jury member Ila Arun said, “The jury didn't see the song in isolation but valued it vis-a-vis the story of the film. The process was transparent and lengthy, and the final decision was unanimous.”

Lyricist and jury member Panchhi Jalonvi said, “It is a matter of pride for all of us that SWA, the most respected organisation in the Hindi film industry, which has been committed to the rights of screenwriters for the last sixty years, is now launching SWA Awards for and by the writers.”

Screenwriter, lyricist, filmmaker and jury member Mayur Puri said, "Respect of one's peers is the highest form of recognition an artist can have.”

Each jury member read the lyrics and heard the shortlisted songs individually, marking scores according to a pre-determined set of criteria, focusing on the merit of the craft, ignoring the song’s popularity or commercial success. Then, in the online jury meeting, they jointly deliberated on their choices to finally come up with the list of nominees and winners.

Summing up the experience, lyricist and jury member Kausar Munir said, “The first-ever SWA Awards are truly democratic because they are of, by and for the writers. I hope, in years to come, they become a binding and bonding platform for the screenwriters’ community.”

SWA is holding the first-ever SWA Awards on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee year in 2020. Since they are judged by knowledgeable screenwriters and lyricists, these awards promise to become the most coveted validation for writers in India, much like the awards of other prestigious international writers’ guilds and literary organisations. Originally scheduled to be held in Mumbai on 16 May  this year, the ceremony will now be held online to protect the health and safety of all participants and attendees during the ongoing Covid2019 pandemic, on September 27 at SWA’s social media handles:

Sony Entertainment Television set to launch KBC season 12

MUMBAI: 2020 as a year, has been etched in everyone’s minds, for all the wrong reasons. However, it’s for us to decide how to overcome these setbacks and march ahead. The will and determination to move forward come from within, and this year, the season 12 of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) gears up for the most celebrated comeback with the thought – Jo Bhi Ho, Setback Ka Jawaab Comeback Se Do.

Conceptualised and written by Nitesh Tiwari & Nikhil Mehrotra, the campaign of this season brings forth relatable examples, through humane stories, which inspire and encourage people to make a greater comeback in life.

With season 12 of KBC on the anvil, the iconic brand synonymous with the show – Amitabh Bachchan – is also gearing up to welcome and applaud contestants from across the country.

Sony Entertainment Television business planning and communication head Amit Raisinghani said, “KBC celebrates the achievements of people irrespective of how small or big the achievements are. The campaign this year has been driven by people’s determination to turn adverse circumstances in their favor and move ahead in life. It’s always a pleasure to work with Tiwari, who exactly knows the pulse of the situation, and creates impactful ad films for KBC. We hope like in the past, this campaign resonates strongly with our audience.”

Tiwari said, “I am grateful for the trust that Sony puts in me each year for the KBC campaigns. This year is of course very different and challenging for all of us in every aspect. But it has been a year of learning and exploring avenues that probably weren’t thought of, paving the path for something meaningful. This leads us to the insight that there is a spark somewhere in each one of us that keeps us going, notwithstanding the obstacles, however big or small. The idea of this campaign is to reignite the spark and inspire people to move ahead in life.”

  • Television actors should also get royalties on reruns and repeat telecasts: Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’s Shailesh Lodha

Television actors should also get royalties on reruns and repeat telecasts: Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’s Shailesh Lodha

MUMBAI: Television industry has been one of the worst-hit sectors due to the pandemic followed by the subsequent lockdown. Now, when the shoots have finally resumed after a hiatus of four long months amid all SOPs and safety measures laid down by the government, many celebs are working with a sense of fear.

aAmpere Analysis projected that the pandemic had delayed at least 60 per cent of scripted television programming worldwide, including at least half of the programming originally scheduled to air in the second half of 2020. There had been a noticeable increase in non-scripted productions—including smaller-scale series capable of being produced remotely—that can be used to fill schedules until scripted programs resume production (noting that audiences may eventually become tired out by pandemic-themed programming).

Shailesh Lodha, an Indian actor, comedian, writer, and best known for playing the role of Taarak Mehta in India's longest-running sitcom serial Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, in an interaction with Governance Now MD Kailashnath Adhikari talks about challenges faced by the television industry, actors and much more.

According to him actors especially who also do brand endorsements, live shows and appearances are facing the brunt of pandemic.

LodhaShailesh shares, “I belong to show business, which has been severly impacted due to pandemic. There are no events or live shows. Thankfully television shooting started last month. So professionally speaking there were no activities during pandemic. I did quite a few online shows, but they don’t give you satisfaction. You don’t feel like you are performing.”

He mentions that it is difficult to predict when the normalcy will return but according to him situations are better than before. However, he believes that the turmoil caused by the pandemic has instilled the sense of fear among people. He said that while entering the set when someone sees cast and crew members in masks, PPE kits, and gloves it creates a fearful environment. He also thinks that India is doing considerably better, with recovery rate at 72 percent and death rate at 2 percent.

Kailash Adhikari raised a question to Lodha if production houses broadcasters are partially responsible for the issues faced by  artists, hair and makeup artists and technicians.

Lodha quipped that the challenges faced by the entertainment industry is no different from other sectors. It is just that the entertainment world is glamorous, and people are more attracted towards entertainment news, hence the media stays in the limelight. But he believes there are various issues and it is going to be in every section of the society and entertainment world is no different from that. He suggests operating business to create job opportunities and strengthen the economy.

As far as the industry’s responsibility towards daily wage earners is concerned Lodha said, “I think if we had taken our responsibility towards the lower section of the society more seriously, it would have been a much better situation.”

As the daily soaps went out of stock, broadcasters resorted to popular reruns of their shows. However, TV reruns might have attracted viewers but not advertisements. Despite viewership no shareholders have been benefited. But during the conversation with Adhikari, Lodha sparks a larger debate about royalties. He said, “Why artists are not benefited when reruns or repeat telecasts are happening. In most of the instances, we look at what is happening in the West, but I think it is high time when artists should also get the royalties of the show. There should be some provision’s under IPRs (Intellectual Property Rights).”

Actors who are part of endorsements, appearances and live shows are severely impacted with their earnings being hampered by the pandemic and lockdown.

Lodha who is a renowned poet and worked in SAB TV’s Waah Waah Kya Baat Hai and several other shows notes that for an artist it is important to have a live audience. Looking at the audience’s reaction gives a certain amount of happiness. But to the pandemic there are no live shows, you are not able to see audience reaction.

He adds, “As a writer and a performer I can say there is not much earning, and whatever is there it is biased earning. In a biased market there is earning but no satisfaction. People are arguing to reduce rates as things are happening virtually, but the artist remains the same. I think it will take one year to get back to normal.”

Finally, film and television shootings have started with a lot of restrictions and limitations. Speaking about the same Lodha highlights that it is the new normal. However, he points out that shooting is more about precautions and less about limitations. He thinks that technology will have to play a much bigger role.  Production houses are heavily dependent on chroma, special effects and VFX  to shoot crowd scenes.

Recently, a blanket ban was introduced in the industry where actors, technicians and crew members above the age of 65 years were not allowed on the film and television set. However, as per Bombay high court’s verdict the ban is now lifted. Lodha thinks at that time it was justified to impose a ban considering elderly citizens were at high risk.

Most searched recipe trends during lockdown include a mix of baking and culinary delights : Foodfood

MUMBAI: Food trends in India during Covid2019 lockdown threw up some very interesting results, a detailed report by Foodfood, India’s favorite food and lifestyle channel. With India locked down for two months, there was a rise of people experimenting with their passions and interests and among them cooking took first place. This was many times a necessity and many other times an indulgence.

According to social media and google search analysis done by Foodfood, most searched recipe trends included a mix of baking and culinary delights that the country was cooking during the lockdown period of April and May. The top most searches were Cake, Dalgona Coffee, Samosa, Jalebi, Dhokla, Chicken momos, Panipuri among others. While 'Dalgona coffee recipe at home' spiked 5,000 per cent, searches for 'chicken momo recipe' grew 4,350 per cent and searches for "mango icecream recipe" saw 3,250 per cent rise on google search.

Chef Sanjeev Kapoor said, “It has been our attempt with our shows and our channel (Foodfood) to help people discover their passion for cooking and this lockdown been proven that – Har dil mein chef rahta hain. During my innumerable live on social media during lockdown, I have interacted with people who have become overnight stars with their cooking recipes on the internet and are discovering their cooking talent.”

What’s interesting is the rise in search has been mainly driven by metro cities including Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkotta, Hyderabad and Chennai accounting for more than 25 per cent share. States that lead the search include Maharashtra, West Bengal and Karnataka. The first weeks of lockdown saw an increase in buying of staples and spices including rava and maida which were flying off the shelves as people were experimenting with delicious treats rather their normal fare.

Devendra Chawla, CEO, Nature’s Basket & Spencer had said “As people get adjusted to restricted living as the new normal and lack of options to eat out, consumers are increasingly taking on the chef role, a trend which will continue post lockdown too”

Some of the other trends during lockdown were:

    Baking

Everyone with an oven was baking and who didn’t have an oven were baking in pressure cooker. Whether it was cakes, cookies or even breads, people were trying one thing after the other.

    Banana Bread

With bread supply disrupted, people started making bread at home and Google saw a surge in search of banana bread recipes. Many variations of like banana cake, banana muffins and banoffee pies also made it to list but Banana Bread ruled the roost!

    Quarantine Snacking

“Quarantine snacks” became the top trending snack search as more and more people stayed inside and experimented with their pantries. In an interview with Bloomberg Quint, Future Group President Food & FMCG Kamaldeep Singh had said, “The definition of basic necessity has changed in a couple of weeks from basic foods to snacking and munching items.” Infact recipes like Samosa, Chinese Bhel, Khaman Dhokla has seen a 300% increase on the searches on websites of Sanjeev Kapoor and Foodfood.

    Street Food

With Street food a strict NO and all options gone, renowned chefs and food bloggers took to Instagram to share their versions of some of the best chaat preparations at home. Aloo Chaat! What’s more, Google insights reported that recipe searches on Youtube increased by 20% for street food recipes! And, the top most-searched recipe was Pani Puri recipe with an increase of 107% search rate. Other recipes that have been widely searched in street food include Baked Potato Chips, Paneer Shawarma Mexican Paneer Fajita (Source Foodfood website).

    Comfort Food- One-Pot Meals

Khichdi and biryanis have been our comfort food for as long as we remember, and also double up as a gourmet dining experience when we want it to be. Making it quick and easy or a time consuming fare, these recipes can be as easy or as tedious as we want them to be. Keywords like easy, quick & tasty have been associated with rice recipes and searches have delivered pulao, fried rice etc. Google insights has reported with restrictions in availability of ingredients people are looking for alternative ingredient options to savour their favourite dishes without missing out on taste. A 200% growth in searches with the word, “without” has been recorded in the Food & beverages category.

    Handmade Pizzas

With kids at home and no pizzas to order, home-made pizzas has been one of the most successful attempts families are making with kids involved. Many chefs have given out recipes and videos and to make easy pizzas at home starting from the dough with variations including sour dough combinations. Live on Social media showcasing handmade pizzas have garnered huge views and been very popular across the board. This pandemic has taught us many things and most of self-reliance to a lot of men and women about cooking who weren’t cooking before. Now nobody is afraid to step into the kitchen and learn how to make things from recipe videos. Women were cooking and experimenting way before this pandemic have learnt to share their art and passion.

MUMBAI: Leading India and Singapore-based animation studio Cosmos-Maya is making its first foray into animated feature films, partnering with Spanish independent Apolo Films to co-produce Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, an adaptation of the classic tale of ‘The Three Musketeers’.
