  • Mumbai’s local trains, women commuters and Zee TV’s Bas Itna Sa Khwaab

Mumbai’s local trains, women commuters and Zee TV’s Bas Itna Sa Khwaab

MUMBAI:  Zee TV’s  7 pm show Bas Itna sa Khwab has women navigating the challenging tug of war between duty calls at work and home as its central premise.  What   better way can there be to bring out this central theme than branding trains which commuters (in this case, women) hop on to daily to get to their workplaces.

Which is what the Zee TV marketing team has done. In a first of its kind tactic for Hindi general entertainment channels, multiple Mumbai local AC trains and the Delhi metro have been plastered with the  show’s key visuals, turning them into moving billboards.  The branded trains beautifully captured the essence of Bas Itna Sa Khwaab, which celebrates women who strike a fine balance between their work and family responsibilities.

To top that, the show’s protagonist  Rajashree Thakur who plays the role of Avani Trivedi, stepped from reel to rail and took this message into the heart of Mumbai—aboard the city’s bustling local trains. Rajashree’s journey on the train became the heart of the campaign. She connected with fellow commuters, heard their inspiring stories, drew parallels between her own life and her character of Avani and brought joy to the crowd with a lively game of antakshari. Her presence transformed an everyday commute into a celebration of the unsung multitasking heroes of Mumbai.

(You can watch the reel about the marketing initiative here:)

A post shared by Zee TV (@zeetv)

“ Branding Mumbai’s AC locals and having our show’s protagonist, Avani,  travel with daily commuters is a heartfelt initiative to bridge reel and real,” said Zee TV chief channel officer  Mangesh Kulkarni. “Through this unique experience, we wanted our Avani to meet the countless Avanis of the city—women whose strength lies in juggling myriad responsibilities and striking a balance between home and work, often without the acknowledgment they truly deserve. It’s a celebration of their resilience, and a reminder that the story of ‘Bas Itna Sa Khwaab’ is, in many ways, their own story too.”

“Meeting women on the train who live similar lives was incredibly humbling,” expressed  Rajashree Thakur.  “Their stories of juggling long commutes, demanding jobs, and family responsibilities turned out to be truly inspiring. I hope my portrayal encourages women to dream big while finding their balance in life.”

The marketing initiative helped build an emotional connect with women commuters. Now let’s wait and watch how much the buzz generated around it will help its ratings climb.

  • Indian imports of British TV series rise 17 per cent to £23 million: Pact report

Indian imports of British TV series rise 17 per cent to £23 million: Pact report

MUMBAI: Just like the British love the curry that Indians dish out in the UK, it seems Indians can’t get enough of the TV shows that British producers offer.  And this is proved by the fact that exports of British TV shows rose 17  per cent from £ 19 million  in 2022-2023 to £23 in million, pushing India  up from the thirteenth to the twelfth spot in 2023-2024.

Exports by country and revenues by UK

A dekko at the Producers Alliance for Cinema & Television  (Pact) Annual British TV Exports report for 2023-2024 (which was released on 29 November)  throws up these numbers.

    Total TV exports from Britain

The report also gave a bit of a bearish trend for British TV exports all over the world as they fell two per cent in 2023-24 to £1,818 million from £1,853 million in the previous year. However, Pact, said the consolation is that 2023-24 figure is 27 per cent higher than the crash in sales British TV production industry experienced in 2020-21 in the thick of the  pandemic.

    Total EXports by country

Also, the report said that the good news is that despite the challenges in the US market over the past 24 months, Uncle Sam continues to be the largest destination for UK TV exports, accounting for almost one third of all sales, and it remains the region of primary focus for British distributors. TV show shipments to the US grew by 13 per cent year on year to a new high of £593 million. Together with Canada, which de-grew seven per cent to £89 million, north America accounts for 41 per cent of all British exports.

    Total exports by country

Other countries in the top 10 that experienced growth included The Netherlands (a 25 per cent increase to £35 million) and South Africa (a 20 per cent increase to £27 million). Germany and The Nordics both saw eight per cent increases, recording Britain’s highest ever total export revenues (£118 million and £104 million respectively).

Elsewhere in the top 10 countries, France (-21 per cent), Italy (-23 per cent) and Spain (-15 per cent)  all saw significant decreases, with France falling out of the top five for the first time. China and Japan saw a drastic drop of 25 per cent in purchases of British content to £17 million and £8 million respectively. Mexico, however, had the highest increase of 118 per cent to £15 million.

    International co-productions fell

An  alarming trend according to Pact is that  revenues from co-productions fell by 28 per cent to £120 million; TV and format sales too dropped eight per cent and seven per cent respectively. This is likely due to a reduction in activity (especially premium drama) by some of the large US media companies that have partnered with companies in previous years.

Finished programmes fell by eight per cent (to £1,019 million) but still remained the largest contributor by some way. International Productions grew significantly by 29 per cent, to £325 million, increasing its share of total TV exports from 14 per cent to 18 per cent.

Scripted drama continued to dominate the genre share of exports, but fell to 43 per cent from 49 per cent in the previous year, whereas entertainment saw the biggest increase of six per cent to 27 per cent.

  • Six US media firms account for 51 per cent of global content spends: Ampere Analysis

Six US media firms account for 51 per cent of global content spends: Ampere Analysis

MUMBAI: The big media and entertainment boys are at it, despite all round murmurings that the content production business is seeing a massive slowdown. At least, that’s what new intelligence from Ampere Analysis has revealed.

The research firm stated that while recent market challenges have impacted the TV and film production landscape, spending across the top six global content providers – Disney, Comcast, Google, Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix, and Paramount Global – has grown since the pandemic. Combined spending across these groups will reach a new high of $126  billion in 2024 and account for 51 per cent of the total content spend landscape, up from 47 per cent in 2020. Original content spend remains the leading spend type across these providers, accounting for over $56 billion in investment and 45 per cent of their total spending since 2022.
Despite announced cutbacks among its linear and theatrical brands, Disney remains the largest contributor to the media landscape at 14 per cent of global investment in TV and film content in 2024. This has been supported by the full acquisition of Hulu at the beginning of 2024, adding an additional $9 billion in to Disney’s spend total.

Netflix is the top investor in global streaming content. It has averaged a total of $14.5 billion in annual investment in original and acquired programmes since the pandemic. Further growth is expected in 2025 through the acquisition of sports tights for NFL matches and WWE entertainment.

In total, $40 billion of the $126 billion is currently spent on these six operators’ subscription streaming services (including Disney+, Peacock, and Paramount+). This highlights the growing importance of these platforms as audiences move away from linear television in favour of the convenience and expansive catalogues available via streaming.

Google’s contribution to the content market comes via YouTube, and investment in programming through its revenue-sharing arrangements with content creators. While a different entity to other TV and film groups, YouTube continues to build its global presence through partnership deals with major content owners, making it the third largest contributor to the content landscape.

Despite production shutdowns caused by the US writers’ and actors’ strikes, streamers have continued to support the production landscape by pivoting towards more global strategies. International (non-US originating) programming accounts for 40 per cent of Paramount+’s and 52 per cent of Netflix’s spend in 2024. Such content is typically cheaper to produce, and effective in motivating new and niche audiences to subscribe to a platform, supporting revenues.

“Ongoing investment by major studios and streaming platforms into new programming will be key to keeping audiences engaged and entertained. We can expect the content landscape to see low-level growth in 2024 as production schedules recover from disruptions caused by the pandemic and the writers’ and actors’ union strikes. Looking forward however, overall growth in spend is set to plateau as companies look to refocus their output. This will include limiting commissioning volumes and prioritising strategic investments and profitability to counter the current challenges of the media market,” said Ampere Analysis investment analyst Peter Ingram, in his recent analysis made public today.

  • Zee TV to premiere new fiction show ‘Vasudha’ on 16 September

Zee TV to premiere new fiction show ‘Vasudha’ on 16 September

Mumbai: Through its audience feedback mechanism, ‘Hamara Parivar,’ Zee TV is reshaping its programming to align with the evolving preferences of today’s viewers. From this feedback comes ‘Vasudha,’ a unique concept on Indian television. The story explores the dynamics between two women from contrasting worlds, whose encounter sparks a clash of ideologies, temperaments, and socioeconomic backgrounds, offering a distinctive narrative. Produced by Arvind Babbal Productions, Vasudha is all set to premiere on 16 September and will air Monday to Friday at 10:30 pm on Zee TV.

Nausheen Ali Sardar plays Chandrika Singh Chauhan, a woman both respected and feared. A self-made leader in Udaipur, Chandrika runs her business with a strict set of rules. Committed to justice, she stands for what is right and expects strict discipline and integrity from those around her, viewing them as keys to success. She prioritizes order over emotions, commanding respect as a formidable leader.

In contrast, Priya Thakur takes on her first lead role as Vasudha, a carefree young woman unfamiliar with urban life’s rigid structures. With a trusting nature, Vasudha’s efforts to impress Chandrika often lead to conflict, creating a dynamic interaction between their opposing personalities.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma takes on the lead role of Devansh Singh Chauhan, the ideal son of the Chauhan family and an embodiment of the best qualities of his parents – his father’s empathy and his mother’s discipline. He deeply respects his mother and believes in giving people a second chance. The story explores how two women, seemingly fire and ice, with precious little in common come together and impact each other’s lives in unimaginable ways.

Zee TV chief channel officer Mangesh Kulkarni said, “Earlier this year, we embarked on an initiative of actively listening to our viewers via Hamara Parivar, a direct line to their preferences. This has enabled us to craft stories that resonate with their evolving desires and expectations. One such show is Vasudha—an exciting new addition to our slate that complements our existing lineup with a fresh perspective. Vasudha explores the dynamic interplay between two women from contrasting worlds—one steeped in disciplined tradition, the other embodying carefree optimism. Through this heartwarming narrative of joy and determination, we are confident that Vasudha will offer a refreshing and engaging dimension to our programming. Our collaboration with the visionary Arvind Babbal ensures this story will captivate our audience, as it seamlessly integrates into the rich diversity of content Zee TV proudly offers.”

Producer Arvind Babbal said, “After presenting audiences with heart-warming narratives like Kyun Rishton Mein Katti Batti and Mithai on Zee TV, we’re excited to collaborate once again with the channel on bringing viewers Vasudha, an engaging narrative of two women from very different worlds and how they profoundly impact each other’s lives. We’ve assembled a talented cast and crew, ensuring a rich tapestry of cultural nuances. We recently completed an extensive outdoor shoot in Udaipur, immersing ourselves in the local atmosphere and we hope audiences connect with Vasudha’s journey and embrace her with love. I’m thrilled to have Nausheen, Priya, and Abhishek bring these characters to life.”

Nausheen Ali Sardar said, “When I was approached for the show, I found the concept very different from what one generally comes across on TV and I couldn’t refuse a role that offers tremendous scope for an actor to showcase their range. My character of Chandrika Singh Chauhan is truly unlike any character I’ve portrayed before. She is the epitome of strength, a self-made woman, the ultimate boss lady. I hope my fans enjoy seeing me in this new avatar!”

Priya Thakur said, “Vasudha holds a special place in my heart as it is my first lead role. Vasudha’s innocence and optimism are endearing, making viewers root for her. Her attempts to impress Chandrika often lead to humorous situations, but she remains a devoted admirer, hoping she will win her over some day. I hope audiences will embrace her as much as I have.”

Abhishek Sharma said, “Playing Devansh, a beautifully written character, truly helps me showcase my acting abilities like never before.  The overwhelming love and support that I have got after the first promo truly makes all the hard work and struggle over the years worth it. The excitement for the show is palpable, and we can’t wait to see the audience’s reaction.”
