This Diwali, India TV introduces comedy show Fakir-e-Azam

New Delhi: This festive season India TV is introducing its Diwali Dhamaaka – ‘Fakir-e-Azam”, a comedy show that is sure to give you relief from all the tension around. Set in the Pakistani PM’s office Fakir-E-Azam is a political satire that focuses on the day to day struggles of the current prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, that faces in the his office.

The show follows Imran Khan, as he goes about his daily routine, calling heads of various countries trying to get his agenda across, but no one seems to take him seriously, instead, they make fun of him, threaten him and humiliate him, the situation reaches a point where he gets frustrated and ends up making fun of himself.

Khan is often seen mumbling to himself that no one listens to him, as most people he calls keep the phone down without listening to what he has to say. Besides trying to connect with heads of other countries Khan is seen struggling with the problems within his own ranks and often trying to solve issues caused by their actions.

Besides all this the most important thing that Khan wants to talk about is India and how he feels threatened by Modi’s regime as they take immediate action as compared to the previous regime who did nothing. The other thing that features in Imran Khan’s conversation, which also gives the show its title ‘Fakir-e-Aazam’, is the fact that Pakistan’s economy is in shambles, it is literally a bankrupt state and that is why Khan is asking everyone for money especially China, by painting a sorry picture of Pakistan.

The show Fakir-e-Azam tries to be as current to the situation in Pakistan, but also touches topics that have been a permanent fixture of the countries landscape, terrorism and Kashmir. Renowned voiceover and character artist Vishwas Kapoor creates some hilarious moments to this show as he plays the Pakistani PM Imran Khan.

  • myNK brings British comedy series ‘Witless’, the story of Leanne and Rhona and the murder that brings them together

myNK brings British comedy series ‘Witless’, the story of Leanne and Rhona and the murder that brings them together

MUMBAI: Imagine living life undercover where your every movement in tracked and fear is your only constant companion in a grotty Swindon flat in England. And what happens when you put Leanne and Rhona under that roof, the odd-couple who weren’t meant to be together? For a situation as grave as this, it is macabrely funny to say the least, with dramatic twists and turns and roars of laughter.

Watch ‘Witless’ to understand how the lives of two ‘poles apart’ room-mates Leanne (Kerry Howard) and Rhona (Zoë Boyle) change when they’ve recently been ripped off their original selves, given new identities and left to fend for themselves in a grubby house as part of ‘witness protection’ programme because they witnessed a gangland shooting. And if that’s not all, the gang has assigned two teenagers to tail the girls, leaving them in more trouble than they ever thought.

Premiering on myNK, India’s world entertainment VoD platform, ‘Witless’, since its release in The UK,  has been considered one of the funniest British sitcoms of recent times because of its extremely smart concept and sharp writing. The series is written by Joe Tucker and Lloyd Woolf and stars Zoë Boyle and BAFTA Best Comedy Actress nominee Kerry Howard. The makers wanted to combine the comedy talents of the actresses with Joe and Lloyd and the concept of ‘Witless’ felt like the perfect project to do that.

‘Witless’ joins in the new wave in comedy series with women in leading roles, achieving stupendous success, namely- ‘Fleabag’, ‘Chewing Gum’, ‘The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel’ and ‘Jane the Virgin’. These are not your regular run-of-the-mill stories where girls discuss boy problems or bad hair days, these are comedy adventures that have women in lead roles. Zoë Boyle and Kerry Howard are two of those women.

It’s often difficult to see two opposites try to co-exist. But it is also endearing when despite the odds, they make it work. Sometimes it’s the wonderful weirdness of a relationship that keeps them invested, just like Leanne and Rhona. Watch ‘Witless’ and see how the hapless women thrown into disarray make it work amidst a life and death situation, in a manner that’s only laughable.

  • Another comic roast raises a storm

Another comic roast raises a storm

MUMBAI: Comic Roasts can backfire. Ask the AIB guys. And now you can ask the cast of Comedy Nights Bachao. In an episode that is yet to be telecast, the cast of the Krushna Abhishek-Bharati Singh-led show on Colors resorted to some leg-pulling of an actress during a film promotion on it. The leg-pulling was around the tanned actress’ skin colour. And, it got her goose. So much so, that it has become an issue with women’s organisations getting behind the actress and the channel and the artistes having to issue an apology.

‘Parched’ actress Tannishtha Chatterjee was the butt of the skin tone joke during a show to be aired on Colors. “She had no clue about ‘Comedy Nights Bachao’, says the show’s host Krushna Abhishek who has now apologised for the ‘racist’ comments. Both, Krushna and Colors have since apologised to Tannishtha after she expressed disappointment with how her skin tone was made fun of on “Comedy Nights Bachao.” Comedian Krushna defended the programme that he co-hosts, after Tannishtha rued its “blatant and regressive racist” ways of finding humour in her “dark skin tone”.

Issues with colorism and race are not new in India. The degradation of dark color and the privileges of whiteness in a post-colonial era is endless. And, jokes on a popular show only help to reinforce the stereotype that dark skin is a subject of ridicule.

Krushna was not present on the sets of the show when Tannishtha was “roasted” on the show. She was accompanied there by her ‘Parched’ team members — director Leena Yadav and actress Radhika Apte. Soon after shooting for the show,Tannishtha took to social media to criticise the format for its racist attack.

The creative professionals on the Colors shows believed that calling someone ‘kaali kalooti’ or asking if eating jamuns (blackberries) as a kid is the reason why she is dark-skinned is amusing.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has slammed the comedy show for allegedly making fun of the skin tone of the actress, and said it is exploring avenues to initiate action on the “unfortunate episode”.

After sitting through two segments of the show, the National Award-winning actress walked out of the shoot when jokes like ‘kaali kalooti, baingan looti’ didn’t stop. In the post, Tannishtha wrote, “…in a country where we still sell Fair and Lovely/Handsome and show adverts where people don’t get jobs because of their complexion, where every matrimonial advert demands a fair bride or groom and the colour bias is so strong, in a society which has a deep-seated problem with dark skin, which also has deep roots in our caste system, in a country where dark skin is marginalised — making fun of it is not a roast. Even considering that dark skin is a joke comes from that very deep prejudice”.

An apologetic Krushna later reacted: “If she (Tannishtha) feels offended by something, I apologise from our side. We never want to hurt anyone deliberately. “Comedy Nights Bachao” is of a roast format. Roast doesn’t mean that we say just anything to anyone… I had asked Tannishtha, if she has seen the show, she said she doesn’t watch TV as such. So, she has no clue about the show. So, I took another example and asked her if she had seen AIB Roast? And she hadn’t seen that either. I told her that since it’s a roast, there will be some leg-pulling, but we don’t insult. Had we been insulting, the show won’t have come so far.”

The actress has said that she had some idea of a roast through “Saturday Night Live” show, and that with “Comedy Nights Bachao”, she was anticipating to be ‘roasted’ as her perception was that a roast is “a celebratory humour at someone’s expense” and “a mock counter to a toast”.

Pointing out that the only thing they could roast about a dark-skinned actress was “of course her dark skin”, she said in a Facebook post: “This was an entirely novel understanding of roast that equates itself with bullying. And to my utmost horror, I soon realised that the only quality they found worth roasting about in me was my skin tone. It began with, ‘Aap ko jamun bahut pasand hoga zaroor…?’”

Krushna said there are actors who take roasts sportingly. “When Varun Dhawan came for ‘Dilwale’, Varun himself came up to me and said that he is very excited and looking forward to the roast. Even Shah Rukh Khan chose to come to our show for ‘Fan’. “I don’t know what hurt Tannishtha, because I wasn’t performing then. But I apologise if it has hurt her, though it wasn’t a deliberate attempt,” he added.

A PTI report quoted NCW chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam as saying it was “deplorable” and “pathetic” that the TV show “stooped to such a low level to garner TRPs”.

“This was wrong on so many levels, in gender construct and social construct and it sets a very bad precedent. It is in bad taste and condemnable. In the name of freedom of expression, one should not and cannot allow perpetuation of social prejudice,” Kumaramangalam told PTI, adding NCW has taken cognisance of the incident and is “consulting lawyers” to determine a “course of action.”

The NCW proposes to issue a letter to the apex authority on monitoring of the broadcast media content to bring to their notice the episode, according to the wire news service report.

This is not the first time comedians and TV shows have come under scrutiny for content that has been described as objectionable by some.

Meanwhile, a media report from Karnataka said that a High Court judge made some critical comments on film, TV and print media content.

Justice Gowda, who has given time to the Central government till 4 October 2016 to respond to a petition, was reported as observing on a case regarding a film content, “In the midst of news, some objectionable contents are introduced on television. Even newspapers carry advertisements about jewellery and lingerie, which are sometimes indecent.”

  • ‘Gangs of Haseepur’ to replace ‘Bh se Bhade’

‘Gangs of Haseepur’ to replace ‘Bh se Bhade’

MUMBAI: There was a time in the 80s and 90s that comedy shows like ‘Hum Paanch’, ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’ and ‘Zabaan Sambhal Ke’ ruled the small screen. More recently, the likes of ‘Khichdi’, ‘Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai’ and ‘Office Office’ captured the audience’s imagination.

Speaking of channels, Zee TV had stopped dabbling in comedy for nearly a decade till it launched ‘Bh se Bhade’ not too long ago. While the show bombed at the television box office, Zee didn’t lose hope and is back with another comedy show titled ‘Gangs of Haseepur’, slated to replace ‘Bh se Bhade’. With the nation in the grip of elections, ‘Gangs of Haseepur’ will reflect what’s happening around us in a funny, humorous way.

“Things that can make you cry will now make you laugh!” is how Zee TV programming head Namit Sharma sums up the new show. “So be it onions being expensive, our faith in our political system, corruption or mehengaai, these are the pain points in our lives, but let’s laugh at them. Since we cannot do anything about it, why not just laugh at it.”

Produced by Essel Vision Productions, the show will be hosted by Ragini Khanna. Contestants like Bharti Singh, Suresh Menon, Raju Srivastav and Krushna Abhishek will perform. Actress Tanishaa Mukerji, who shot to fame with ‘Bigg Boss season seven’, along with Mandira Bedi will judge the laugh-a-thon.

Nitin Keni of Essel Vision Productions says the concept is very different from other comedy shows running on television today. “It will talk about social issues, and comedians will pick an issue which the country is facing and make fun of it. It has been just 15 days since we finalized the concept of the show.” Currently in the scripting stage, shooting for the show will start from April 14.

Sharma says they wanted to time the show with the polling phase so as to reflect what is happening in the country. “Our endeavour is to make a good comedy show that reflects all the issues of society currently and that can poke fun at the everyday life of our country. On our channel, there was a lack of it, and there was a desire to do a comedy show. More importantly, there was a desire to reflect the mood of the country,” he says. “We do understand that men watch more GEC television over weekends. So, we are catering to the entire family.”

Won’t ‘Gangs of Haseepur’ get lost in the sea of comedy shows that have debuted on television of late? “Today, one wants to see clean comedy shows, no doubt it works as a stress buster at the end of the hard day, but good and differentiated content will be recognized,” says a media planner on condition of anonymity.
