  • The long-forgotten Stop Motion Animations and Non-Verbal Animations are back

The long-forgotten Stop Motion Animations and Non-Verbal Animations are back

MUMBAI: One Take Media Co. has always believed in creating a diverse content library. Right from Hollywood Movies to Animated Content, from regional content to international content. Covering almost 24 genres, how could have they left the Nonverbal and StopMotion content behind.

The world is extremely diverse. We have hundreds of languages spoken and cultures followed. People are entirely different from each other. But the one thing which remains common in all of us is EMOTIONS. We can be of nationality, culture or community but emotions are the one thing which unites us all. And that is exactly what Non-verbal contents are pitching for.

We all remember the classic and all the time favourite Tom and Jerry Cartoon Shows. There was no language used but only expressions and yet it touched millions of hearts around the globe. That is the power of Non-Verbal Communication.

The Beet Party is one such example in the nonverbal category. The Beet Partyis about the Five of the coolest Beetroots in town. They are chilling in the fridge when something new and unexpected arrives on their shelf. It is a series of 104 episodes of 2 minutes each.  It takes only seconds to bring a smile on someone’s face.

Apart from Non-Verbal Content, OTMC also has a wide library of Stop Motion Animations.

Stop Motion Animation is a technique used in animation to bring static objects to life on screen. This is done by moving the object in increments while filming a frame per increment. When all the frames are played in sequence it shows movement.Stop motion animation is almost as old as film itself. And not to be mistaken, Stop Motion is no less expensive than any Computer based animation. In fact it is more expensive than 3D CG.  It requires a lot of time, money, hard work and patience to finally craft out a piece of perfect art.

OTMC is proud to announce its fun filled Stop Motion Animation Series Pat and Mat.

Pat and Mat (Season 1 & 2) is about two friends facing self-made problems where they try to solve them by using anything impossible and possible and their solutions lead to more problems, at the end the "problem" is fixed and they finish off with their distinctive handshake.

  • “The indian animation industry has lost a true legend”: industry mourns the death of Arnab Chaudhuri

“The indian animation industry has lost a true legend”: industry mourns the death of Arnab Chaudhuri

Artist, director and industry veteran Arnab Chaudhuri passed away on 25 December in Kolkata. He was noted in the animation industry for his feature film with UTV in 2012 titled Arjun: The Warrior Prince.

As soon as the news came, the industry started mourning the death of a fellow colleague.

Says Punnaryug Artvision founder Ashish Kulkarni, “Arnab Choudhury was such a gentle man. The Indian animation industry has lost a true legend. What an animation direction in  “Arjun: The Warrior Prince” animated movie. We were just together at Kochi Design Week 10 days ago. We were on a panel  discussion which I had an opportunity to moderate. Just difficult to even imagine that 10 to 12 days ago he was perfectly fine and was  moving around with a camera taking pictures. We had lunch and breakfast together and discussed a lot of great initiatives for AVGC sector. He even jokingly asked me what is the full form of AVGC. Such a humble, highly respected and creative person, who brought pride to India in many ways by creating world class animation. I am finding it extremely difficult to even believe that Arnab is not with us anymore. May is soul rest in peace. He will always be remembered for his creativity, attitude and pleasant personality.”

With more than two decades of experience in the fields of television, animation and creative design, Chaudhuri had worked with major organisations like Turner, Walt Disney and Channel V.

“This is really shocking, I still can’t believe it. I knew Arnab so well – such a decent, gracious person, so hardworking and so passionate about animation. This truly is a great loss. He had many more wonderful films yet to make – most unfortunate that we will never see those. I will miss him.” said Paperboat Animation co-founder and chairman Soumitra Ranade.

Toonz Media CEO P. Jayakumar also reminisced on how he met Chaudhuri just a week back at Kochi Design Summit, where he was the keynote speaker, and how he was one of the well wishers of the studio and the industry. He also said that the Arjun director had collaborated with them on various projects and even gave numerous masterclasses to their artists. “This is a severe loss to the industry. It is very shocking” concludes Jayakumar.

Expressing his heartfelt grief over the loss, Technicolor India head Biren Ghose mournfully shared: “I was extremely sorry to hear about the loss of the very talented Director Arnab Chaudhuri. He was a valued and amazingly talented member of the animation and film fraternity in India. Only the good die young. He took great pains to change the “local animation” paradigm having labored over a full-length animated feature at a time when there were hardly any local projects of that size and scale. The film is “Arjun”. This brilliant passion project set a new bar in our country. The manner in which he went about preparing and pre visualizing every aspect of the “look and feel” and “art direction” in this genre was pioneering.”

Speaking about how he felt at the screening of Chaudhari’s movie in Annecy, he added, “It was a very proud moment for me to attend the screening of this movie in Annecy – “The Mecca for animation competitions” and I recall that the global audience truly appreciated and applauded his work. I will never forget the pride we all felt as Indian compatriots at the standing applause the film received. I hope he will rest in peace and I know that he will set about working on his next story and delight all those even in the world beyond….one day we will all get to see that as well. In sorrow for his loss, in happiness that we knew him and in appreciation for his legacy in storytelling. A heartfelt salute.”

Even noted independent artists from the industry shared their thoughts, “I met him for the first time two weeks ago after hearing about him for decades …and we spent hours talking about art, stories and philosophy, and we spoke about our future projects and life goals with such excitement. Such a gem of an experience . He will be greatly missed.” said Vaanarsena Studios senapati Vivek Ram.

The loss of a veteran from the country’s animation industry will surely be felt throughout.

“A sad moment in Indian animation today. I met Arnab when he was heading Disney channel. His film Arjun was one of the first few animation films in India that actually didn’t target only kids. His efforts n the style of work will always be admired by coming generations for sure. Rest in peace”. shares Vaibhav More Films founder Vaibhav More.

Denying that being a latecomer is a shortcoming for them, Dutta said that she rather sees this as an opportunity. She noted, “The only challenge is that children already have so many characters entrenched in their minds, so we have to do something disruptive enough to disperse them from their minds and make a memorable IP. We see a lot of unconventional brands also coming to our channel.”

You have to keep on upgrading the hardware and software. You need to understand the pain of the employees. On top of all this, there is GST also now. But I’m happy that Chhota Bheem paved the way for domestic animation. Motu Patlu is a roaring success. We need more passion and more young blood coming with us. We need to reach out to the Indian diaspora. Being number one is something we never dreamt of. We need to reach the benchmark of Rs 100 crore and then Rs 100 million.”

Upon being asked about the challenges in licensing of the IPs due to the absence of L&M culture in Dream Theatre, George shared, “There wasn’t really a culture of L&M and India is a very diverse market. You can make a t-shirt for Rs 99 and high-quality ones for Rs 499. However, the biggest challenges remain to be piracy and counterfeiting.”

Speaking about his success with L&M, Shrinivas Chilakalapudi shared, “We have had success with licensing so you we have done Mighty Raju, Super Bheem, Mighty Little Bheem in Toddler’s Space.”

George added, “To the animation companies, my wish is that we need authentic characters. it's authentic when you do your own characters. Do what the Japanese do. Check which characters can be seamlessly integrated into the script. When it's seamlessly done, it easier for us. Otherwise we don't like to slap it onto the t-shirt.”

The final panel of the day discusses the topic of “Creating an Impact for Kids Audience”. Sitting on the panel were Grey India national planning director Arun Raman, Wavemaker managing partner Monaz Todywalla, and Omnicom Media AVP, PHD Media Asmita Pawar Reelkar. The panel was moderated by Sony Yay! VP marketing and OAP Sujoy RoyBardhan.

Arun Raman noted that segmentation within the kids’ genre creates a big problem for marketers. He insisted that kids’ content should be made more inclusive and relevant to audiences across categories including adults.

The knowledge-packed day culminated into the gala ANN Awards where top performers in the animation sector within the country were felicitated for their work.
