Jim Henson Co puppets its way into European distribution deal

MUMBAI; The Jim Henson Co, currently celebrating seven decades of making children talk to felt, has appointed DeAPlaneta Entertainment to handle European distribution and licensing for several of its beloved children’s programmes.

The agreement, signed as the puppet powerhouse marks its 70th birthday, covers distribution rights for award-winning shows including Dinosaur Train, Pajanimals, and Dot. Perhaps most notably, the deal includes the 1980s classic Fraggle Rock – proof that even after 40 years, audiences still can’t resist small creatures who live in caves and sing about radishes.

DeAPlaneta Kids & Family content and media sales director Carlos Biern waxed lyrical about the partnership: “We are firmly committed to celebrating children’s content that encourages viewing as a shared experience. There is no better example than the output of The Jim Henson Co,” he said, presumably without having his hand operated from below.

The Jim Henson Co  chief operating officer & president Chris Lytton added: “Parents around the world know that our productions will be innovative, educational, and of course entertaining,” neglecting to mention how many of those parents still feel emotionally scarred by the Skeksis from The Dark Crystal.

DeAPlaneta Entertainment, a joint venture between Grupo Planeta and DeAgostini, has previously distributed acclaimed films including The Pianist, The King’s Speech, and 12 Years a Slave – all of which would have been markedly different had they featured Muppets.

The Jim Henson Co’s recent productions include the Oscar-winning Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio for Netflix and Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock for Apple TV+.

The company continues to operate from Los Angeles, New York and London, quietly refusing to acknowledge that most children today would rather watch a teenager unbox toys on YouTube than engage with a talking sock.

  • Pocket Entertainment introduces AI-powered Pocket Toons to transform comics

Pocket Entertainment introduces AI-powered Pocket Toons to transform comics

MUMBAI: The comic world just got a serious upgrade. Pocket Entertainment, the parent company of Pocket FM and Pocket Novel, has launched Pocket Toons-an AI-first comics platform that blends artificial intelligence with human creativity to supercharge storytelling. With its proprietary AI studio, Blaze!, the company is rewriting the rules of comic production-pumping out high-quality episodes 20 times faster and at just a third of the usual cost.

At the heart of Pocket Toons lies Blaze!, a cutting-edge AI studio designed to enhance, not replace, artistic vision. This powerhouse technology automates background rendering, scene composition, colouring, and quality control-freeing up artists to focus on what truly matters: storytelling and character development. The result? An unprecedented production speed of three episodes per day, compared to the industry standard of one per week. That’s not just fast-it’s warp speed for comic creation.

    Pocket Toons

Since its beta launch in January 2025, Pocket Toons has exploded onto the scene with over 30 comic titles, demonstrating a strong product-market fit. Readers are spending an average of 60 minutes a day on the platform, showing that AI-powered comics aren’t the future-they’re already here. To fuel this growth, Pocket Entertainment has pledged a $15 million investment in 2025, setting its sights on a bold $100 million ARR target by 2026.

Pocket Toons’ beta phase has already delivered eye-popping engagement stats:

. Users spend over 60 minutes daily on the platform.

.  Paying users clock in more than two hours per day.

. Total reading time has surpassed six million minutes.

. More than 100,000 downloads recorded in just two weeks.

Pocket Entertainment co-founder & CEO Rohan Nayak sees AI as a creative enabler, not a disruptor: “The fusion of AI and human storytelling marks the beginning of a new creative era. Every major shift in entertainment—cinema, animation, digital streaming-has been fuelled by technology. AI is the next frontier, amplifying human creativity without replacing artistic expression.”

    Pocket Toons

Pocket Toons SVP Shreyas Joshi echoed this sentiment, “The demand for high-quality, episodic content has never been higher. We are producing comics 20x faster at a third of the cost, making premium content more accessible than ever. Blaze! supercharges the creative workflow while keeping originality intact.”

Pocket Toons is deploying AI across multiple dimensions:

. Personalised content: AI curates and recommends comics tailored to individual preferences.

.  Diverse storytelling: AI unlocks new formats, including interactive and immersive genres.

. Global reach: AI-powered analytics drive localisation and cultural adaptation at breakneck speed.

The global comics industry, valued at $8.63 billion in 2023, is on track to reach $15.38 billion by 2033, with AI at the helm of this growth. As digital reading skyrockets, AI-powered platforms like Pocket Toons are redefining the way we create and consume comics-one hyper-efficient, visually stunning episode at a time.

  • ‘Iron Man’ writers return to superheroes with Graphic India’s ‘Shadow Tiger’

‘Iron Man’ writers return to superheroes with Graphic India’s ‘Shadow Tiger’

Mumbai: Graphic India, the leader in original Indian-themed character entertainment, announced today that acclaimed “Iron Man” and “Children of Men” scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, will script the live-action, English-language film adaptation of “Shadow Tiger,” based on the hit Graphic India comic book character created by Sharad Devarajan.

This marks the first return to the superhero genre for the Academy Award-nominated writers since the first “Iron Man” film for Marvel which established the foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to their acclaimed film work, Fergus and Ostby are also creators of the hit sci-fi series, “The Expanse,” and currently also writing and executive producing, the “God of War” series for Amazon.

Produced by Graphic India, Shadow Tiger is one of the most acclaimed comic books out of India in recent years. The superheroes’ digital short-form episodic releases combined with social media fan engagement contests have reached over 330 million views across digital platforms.

“We’ve always loved international stories that can speak to audiences across cultures and borders.  Shadow Tiger felt like an ideal opportunity to do that, by returning to the roots of the superhero genre, namely that superheroes were meant to inspire ordinary people to fight injustice,” screenwriters Fergus and Ostby said in a joint statement.

The Shadow Tiger comics tell the story of Rajan Shah, a brilliant young lawyer from humble beginnings, who sees his career destroyed when he challenges corruption in India’s legal system. His life takes an extraordinary turn when he inherits a billion-dollar empire and a mysterious power from the very man responsible for his parent’s death. Haunted by his complex past, he vows to protect the innocent and bring justice to those beyond the reach of the law. With each act of justice, Shadow Tiger teeters on the precipice of becoming the very darkness he swore to fight. It is one thing to die for a cause, but another to kill for it.

“In creating Shadow Tiger, my mission was to create a truly global superhero with uniquely Indian roots. Having Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby on board is a game-changer – their work on Iron Man laid the foundation for a cinematic universe that has generated over $30 billion and transformed global entertainment. They’re the perfect writers to take Shadow Tiger to the world, and I am honoured they have chosen this character to mark their return to superheroes,” added  Graphic India creator of Shadow Tiger and CEO Sharad Devarajan.

Devarajan previously co-created the “Indian Spider-Man”, Pavitr Prabhakar. That character was recently featured in the latest Spider-Man film, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” The film set a milestone in India becoming the highest-grossing animated theatrical film ever released in the country. Devarajan previously also worked with legendary creator Stan Lee to co-create, “Chakra The Invincible,” one of India’s most successful original superheroes.

Previously at Graphic India, Devarajan also co-created, wrote and produced the animated hit, “The Legend of Hanuman” which broke records as the most successful animated project in Indian history and reached #1 on the charts for Disney+Hotstar for each of the four seasons when released.

The live-action Shadow Tiger film is being independently developed and produced by Graphic India through its new live-action production division. Devarajan, Fergus and Ostby are producing along with Graphic’s SVP Live Action, Sarena Khan.

Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby are repped by CAA, Kaplan/Perrone, and Gochman Law Group.
