  • Star India celebrates World Television Day

Star India celebrates World Television Day

MUMBAI: For those of a certain generation, the television has always been there in the corner of the front room, entertaining us, educating us, shaping our mindset and attitude. Believed to have been invented by an assortment of individuals in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the credit for the TV unit is generally given to John Locke Baird. Just like the internet this side of the millennium, the television, in its age, revolutionised the world. The first World Television Forum was staged by the United Nations in the mid ’90s, and that is when the humble TV set was honoured with a day of its own. Ever since, 21 November is celebrated as World Television Day.

TV has proved to be an indispensable medium that has played a crucial role over the past decades, as well as during this prolonged pandemic. It provided a crutch to the Indian psyche and kept more than a billion people united, engrossed, and informed with content across genres in multiple languages.

To celebrate this medium, Star India Network has come up with a campaign to commemorate World Television Day and to convey heartfelt gratitude to its distribution associates for their relentless efforts.

The network has conceptualised in-house campaign that brings together some of the most loved characters from the Star India Network for the occasion. Star & Disney India TV distribution, India and international president Gurjeev Singh Kapoor said,  "Our Cable & DTH affiliates form the backbone of the television viewing value chain and through this initiative, we are expressing our gratitude towards the continuous support they have extended to the Star India network over the years."

Kapoor highlighted that the campaign will be aired across Star network – GEC, movies, sports, and regional channels. It will be broadcast in multiple languages – Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, and Marathi. Further, it will also be amplified digitally through social media.

The campaign will air across the network starting 20 November from 9 pm, till 21 November, in Hindi + six regional languages leveraging Star India Network’s talent. These include Neil Bhatt from Gum Hai Kisi Ke Pyaar Mein, Suhasini from Devatha, Harshad Atkari & Samriddhi Kelkar from Phulala Sugandh Maaticha, Sonamoni Saha from Mohor, Naleef Gea from Mounaragam, Chitra from Pandian Stores, and Dharma from Inthi Nimma Asha.

  • TV segment ad revenue decline to be in range of 20-25% at end of FY21, report estimates

TV segment ad revenue decline to be in range of 20-25% at end of FY21, report estimates

KOLKATA: The broadcasters have had rockier than the usual first half of the year due to ongoing crisis as the advertising spends fell drastically. While the market is slowly recovering, ad decline could be in the range of 20-25 per cent at the end of FY21. The report published by Elara Capital also predicts that Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) and TV Today Network (TV Today) will outperform other broadcasters in terms of ad revenue.

Zeel’s growth will be driven by Zee Anmol moving back towards FTA and strong gains in the south based regional genre, as per the report. It further adds that TV Today will have an advantage of the shift in the news genre due to sharp viewership gains compared to other genres, which has tapered off post the unlock. However, it still remains high compared to pre-Covid levels. Aaj Tak being the leader in the news genre in the first half of FY21, the traction for ad spends in the festive season is expected to remain healthy along with some benefits during Bihar elections, thanks to strong market share for election poll viewership.

It re-emphasises that the re-conversion of channels like Zee Anmol, STAR Utsav from paid to FTA will continue to benefit the listed broadcasters like Zeel positively as they have been gaining significant market share within the GEC genre attracting ad revenues. Hence, the report predicts the ad revenues from these channels to move back to pre-NTO levels, which had plummeted after their conversion to paid channels post NTO 1.0 implementation.

Genre-wise, Hindi and regional GEC will outperform TV ad spends, while other genres like English, music, infotainment etc. will underperform given the continued weakness witnessed in the English entertainment genre and struggle of music, infotainment in attracting ad spends.

The report says that the pricing of GEC genre has seen a sharp recovery and down by merely 25-30 per cent narrowing the gap from 60-65 per cent in April-May. However further recovery for pricing in the GEC genre is expected only after the Indian Premier League (IPL) i.e. November onwards, as the latter has extracted a huge chunk of ad budgets. It also says that the festive uptick coupled with the resumption in GEC ad spends post the IPL season to bode well for the broadcasters, during the first half of the third quarter leading to 15 per cent growth year-on-year.

Nonetheless, the report mentions that broadcasters would not be able to close the quarter with the festive gains due to some drop towards December. Hence, they will end overall Q3 at a 7-8 per cent growth excluding IPL. During the fourth quarter, broadcasters are expected to report a growth of 10-12 per cent given the low base of FY20 impacted by Covid2019. Based on these expectations, FY21E ad decline translates to average 17- 19 per cent (ex-IPL).

Zee TV launches first-ever music league, Indian Pro Music League

MUMBAI: With the ongoing festive season, Zee TV has been packing one exciting surprise after another for its audiences by way of three new fiction shows in October and another exciting supernatural fantasy thriller Brahmarakshas on its way in November. Things are only going to get bigger and better in the coming year as the channel is all set to revolutionise the face and sound of music on television in early 2021. In what will be a clutter-breaking format innovation on reality TV, Zee TV in collaboration with Fathom Pictures will present audiences with the world’s first ever music league, the ‘Indian Pro Music League’ (IPML).

While the world of sports has seen several league competitions, be it in India or abroad, this first-of-its-kind music league will have six teams owned by the likes of Shraddha Kapoor along with her father and brother – Shakti Kapoor and Siddhant Kapoor, Govinda along with wife Sunita, Rajkummar Rao, and Riteish Deshmukh along with wife Genelia D’Souza Deshmukh, representing different regions of India, battling it out against each other in a musical championship.

Each of these teams will have celebrated playback singers, one male and one female vocalist as their captain. Additionally, every team will also have reality stars and to add to this pool of talent, six fresh voices from various regions of the country, one for each team, will get a chance to be a part of this league! To be hosted by two top anchors, the Indian Pro Music League will be launched in early 2021. Akin to the format of a sports league, the show will have five innings comprising the league matches and a super match where audience votes and umpire points will decide the outcome of the league and declare one of the teams as the league champions.

About the format breakthrough, Zee TV business head Aparna Bhosle said, “At Zee TV, we constantly endeavour to provide audiences with new, unique and cutting-edge content that gives them a sense of novelty alongside engaging entertainment for the entire family. Over the years, we've seen how league formats have become immensely popular amongst sports viewers and as a country where Cricket is nothing short of a religion, audiences at large, have embraced and internalised this exciting format. With the Indian Pro Music League, the idea is to infuse the space of music reality television with the same energy and competitive spirit that is typical of a sports league. The quotient of excitement and anticipation is enhanced by top Bollywood stars and sports celebrities owning the six teams that will compete in the championship. While we have the top playback singers of the country as our team captains and rising reality stars on board to ensure the highest bar of excellence in the music the show will produce, we're on a quest to find some new talented singers from across the country through an intensive scouting initiative as Zee TV has always believed in leveraging the strength of its reality formats to give the common man an opportunity of chasing his dreams.”

Zee Studios will be the creative and production house on the show.
