Category: Viewership

  • Most watched teams of IPL 10

BENGALURU: The tenth edition of the T20 Indian Premier League that ended on 21 May 2017 (IPL 10 or IPL 2017) garnered much better viewership than its predecessor – IPL 2016 according to Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) data. Fifty nine of the sixty matches – 55competition (56 planned) matches, two qualifiers, 1 eliminator and one final match, were played by 8 teams over 43 days (44 planned) across 47 days with over 200 Indian and international cricketers. One match – match number 29 between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sun Risers Hyderabad on Tuesday, 24 April 2017 was not played because of incessant rain at the venue – The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium at Bangalore.

A larger proportion of rural viewers watched IPL 10 – 47 percent of total viewers as against 39 percent of total viewers in the case of IPL 9. The ratio of male to female viewers was almost unchanged as was the ratio of HSM markets to South markets. 41 percent of females made up the viewership of IPL10 as compared to 42 percent in IPL 9, and 73 percent of the total viewers were from the HSM market in IPL 10 as compared to 72 percent in the case of IPL 9.

Average viewership per match in IPL 2017 at 21.19 million impressions was 24 percent more than the average 17.11 million impressions that were recorded for IPL 9. On weekends, which included Saturday’s and Sunday’s along with two Mondays’ – (17 April 2017 and 1 May 2017 or May day) and two Friday’s –(14April 2017 and 28 April 2017) average Impressions for primetime matches or evening matches in IPL 10 increased 20.5 percent to 26.222 million as compared to 21.753 million for IPL 9. In all, 44 matches (43 played) were scheduled for evening primetime and 16 matches for afternoon during IPL 10’s extended weekends.

Afternoon matches saw viewership increase 26.54 percent in IPL 10 to an average of 12.713 million per afternoon match from an average of 10.046 million per afternoon match during IPL 9.

So which were the most watched teams of IPL 10?

For IPL 10, matches 1 to 56 were the competition matches – each team played 2 matches with each of the other seven contestants – the only exception being match number 29 mentioned above. Hence each team was supposed to play 14 competition matches. The last four matches of IPL 10 (technically it should be 3, with the fourth being the finals –match 60) have been considered as Knockouts matches in this report by the author. All the Knockouts matches were played only in the evening. Two (matches 57 and 59) of the 3 matches were qualifiers, with one eliminator match (match 58) and one final – match 60.

The qualifiers, the eliminator or Knockouts and the finals were sure to garner high viewership, and to bring the teams at par, only the matches before the Knockouts have been considered to determine which teams were the most watched team in IPL 10.

Data for the matches 1 to 56 (except the washout match 29) indicates average viewership of 23.764 million per evening or primetime match during IPL10 for 39 payed evening matches before the Knockouts.  Of the 56 planned matchesuntil the Knockouts, 16 were afternoon matches as mentioned above. Forty-two evening matches had higher ratings than the highest ratings garnered by an afternoon match.

    Evening matches before the Knockouts

Four teams had average viewership per match that were higher than the overall average viewership per match for all evening matches until the Knockouts. Please refer to the figure below.

Team Mumbai or Mumbai Indians (MI) topped the list with 24.950 million average impressions per match, followed very closely behind by team Bangalore or Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with 24.893 million average impressions per match. The two matches played by these two teams against each other were afternoon matches – one of which was the most viewed afternoon match.

Trailing not too far behind RCB was team Pune (Rising Pune Supergiant or RPS) with average match impressions of 24.672 million permatch. Team Kolkata or Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was also close at fourth place with average 24.673 million impressions per match until the Knockouts in IPL 10. Also, trailing at fifth place was team Hyderabad or Sun Rises Hyderabad (SRH) with average impressions of 23.558 million per match. Team Punjab or Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Team Gujarat (Gujarat Lions or GL) and Team Delhi (Delhi Daredevils or DD followed at sixth, seventh and eighth places respectively.

    public://11111111111_0.jpg

The average of the sum of average weekly impressions per match – 209.778 million divided by the eight weeks or part thereof that the IPL 10 matches were played, works out to 26.222 million impressions per match. However, a simple average based on the sum of all the 43 evening IPL matches (1,043.242 million) divided by the number of matches played (43) works out to 24.261 million impressions per evening match.

The most watched match of IPL 10 was the final with 39.403 million average impressions on Sunday, 21 May 2017. The most watched match of the season before the Knockouts was Match no 2 between Mumbai and Pune on Thursday, 6 April 2017 at Pune that had 30.328 million average impressions. It was an evening match, right at the commencement of IPL 10.

    Afternoon matches

For the 16 afternoon matches, the simple average obtained by dividing the sum of impressions of all matches (206.733 million) by 16, works out to 12.921 million average impressions per match. Three teams scored higher viewership impressions for the afternoon sessions than the average viewership per match of all matches. Again, like in the case of evening matches, team Mumbai drew the most eyeballs with a simple average of 16.456 million impressions per match from 3 matches. The Bangalore team was next with an average of 14.228 million impressions per match from 4 afternoon matches. Team Gujarat was third with an average of 13.942 million impressions per match from 4 matches. Please refer to the figure below.

    public://22222222222222_0.jpg

The highest rated afternoon match was Match no 12 between Bangalore and Mumbai on 14 April 2017 with 18.130 million impressions. Both teams were the most watched teams of IPL 10. The match was played on a day that was a holiday in most parts of the country.

    End Points

Many factors could be responsible for higher viewership ratings – this could include viewer fascination for the team, more matches played by a team on a holiday/s or in the evening session/s as compared to the teams that attracted lower viewer eyeballs. Would evening matches between Mumbai and Bangalore have drawn more viewers? Both teams are composed of some of the most exciting cricketers in the world? Quite likely! It would only be a cliché to say that IPL has in general succeeded in all its seasons in affecting viewership during all of them.

It may be noted that the average impressions per match in the afternoon mentioned in the early part of this report is based on the average of average impressions of the weeks divided by the number of weeks –this was mentioned earlier as 12.713 million per afternoon match for IPL 10 and an average of 10.046 million per afternoon match during IPL 9. However to bring parity, in the chart above, and at the cost of repetition, the average impressions per match have been obtained by adding the impressions of all the afternoon matches divided by the number of afternoon matches.

  • LCN issue: Viacom18’s Sudhanshu Vats lauds TRAI, validates trust in BARC

MUMBAI: Industry observers were quite puzzled as to why India’s TV viewership monitoring agency – Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) – kept relatively mum during the entire multiple-LCN- placement-generating-unnatural-ratings fight between the English news channels and debutant the Arnab Goswami backed Republic TV. A couple of the English news channels went to court, hauled BARC, Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) and the newcomer before the judge, and even stripped their signals of the viewership monitoring audio watermark.

Each of them sent out a flurry of private messages to all and sundry, stating their point. BARC sent out only one official statement, during the entire spat.

    Was it shirking its responsibility?

“No,” stated BARC executives in private conversation. “Our job is to simply monitor television viewing and report honestly with what we have. No matter what each player does on the distribution front. The regulator has to take action.”

And the regulator TRAI did take action a few days ago by sending out a note warning distribution platforms against going the multiple LCN way for any channel, and ensuring that genre placement is adhered to.

The move has drawn plaudits from BARC chairman Sudhanshu Vats (he is also the vice-president of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation and Group CEO of Viacom 18).

“The recent note from TRAI on the LCN issue (titled ‘Listing of TV Channels on Electronic Programme Guide) is a welcome step in the right direction,” says Vats. “It provides all market players with much-needed clarity and clearly spells out the regulator’s view on the issue. Once again TRAI has taken the ‘consumer lens’ and ensured that she remains at the center of the discourse.”

The BARC chairman further says: “As the dust settles on the matter, three key truths have been proven. The first pertains to BARC and its methods to measure what India watches. In that context, it is safe to say that watermarking is a modern, robust technology that has held the industry in good stead. In record time, BARC has earned a fair share of its currency of trust and all its stakeholders are committed to its mission, including the IBF which backs it in entirety. To be frank, it was wrong to drag BARC into the issue in the first place. The second truth requires us to introspect as an industry.

It is unfortunate that some members have taken issue with the use of multiple LCNs when many have themselves set the precedent for it – either as a promotional or as a defensive tactic. While this should now abate given the recent direction from TRAI, moving forward, all market players must create consensus internally rather than squander away the valuable time of the courts.”

He further cautions that the industry should work together to ensure that its shared credibility should not be dented, especially by the players’ own actions. He further explained that the multiscreen future is going to bring up its own challenges and everyone needs to prepare for it.

“Total Audience Measurement’ (i.e. measurement of content consumption across devices including handheld, desktop, TV etc.) will become the norm. In such an environment, all content players will look at innovative ways to increase their reach and sampling while focusing on delivering winning content. This is the new normal that we all need to prepare for, ” says Vats. “I’ve always thought of our industry as a large family with members who often quarrel but eventually come together. This time will be no different.”

  • Republic TV curiosity factor wanes, NBA channels data absent in week 21

BENGALURU: Has the curiosity factor for Republic TV started dipping? The channel topped Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) ratings for the third week in a row since its inception, albeit with much lower ratings when compared to those obtained during its debut week. Republic TV’s victory can be termed a pyrrhic victory at the best. Conspicuous by its absence was data for the other major Indian English News channels from the weekly top 5 English News channels list for week 21 (Saturday, 20 May 2017 to Friday, 26 May 2017).

Republic TV could obtain just 1,014 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums for week 21. This was just about 48 percent of the Weekly Impressions that the channel had garnered in week19. It ratings in week 21 were even lower than the ratings obtained by the second placed Times Now which had weekly impressions of 1,148 (000s) Sums in week 19. In its first week of operations (BARC week 19), Republic TV had a viewership share of 52 percent and 2,117 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums, which fell to 49 percent in BARC week 20 with 1,703 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums. Week 21 data be termed irrelevant, considering that the data for the channels that Republic TV challenged, and channels that can offer stiff competition in the genre is absent.

It may be recalled that in a coordinated move, English News channels had pulled out of BARC on 18 May, only to return to the BARC fold from midnight of 26 May. English News channels backed by the News Broadcast Association had stripped their signals of BARC audio watermarks. The NBA had requested BARC not to publish Republic TV’s ratings, alleging that the channel had resorted to rampant multiple LCN placements on cable TV networks across the country, which the ratings agency had refused to comply with. In the absence of ratings data for channels such as Times Now, India Today Television, CNN News Today, etc., other channels found places in BARC’s top 5 channels list for the genre of week 21.

Following far behind Republic TV, at second place was BBC World News with just 190 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums. BBC World News reappeared in BARC’s top 5 channels for the English News genre after it had held fifth rank in week 18 with 128 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums. BBC World News has been present in the top 5 English News channels list for 17 of the first 21 weeks of 2017, though never at the second rank.

At third place was Wion with at 68 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums, followed by NewsX HD with just 1 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums. NDTV 24×7 came in at fifth place with ratings of just 0.21 Weekly Impressions (000s) Sums.

Amongst the losers of week 20, were the religious channels.. The genre dropped by 5.3 per cent in HSM with Sanskar leading the tally with 95.8 per cent OTS.

  • News channel controversy: BARC India fires riposte to NBA

MUMBAI: The muck is flying thick and fast in the English news channel genre. Yesterday, the English news channel members of the News Broadcasters Association decided to pull out of the Broadcast Audience Research Council’s (BARC) viewership monitoring by removing its watermark from their channels. This followed the BARC’s decision to release data for week 19 despite the NBA urging it not to do so as debutante the Arnab Goswami headed Republic TV had resorted to dual and multiple LCN placement of the channel to pump up its viewership.
The net result: Republic TV emerged as the leader in the genre beating back old time vets such as Times Now, India Today, NDTV 24×7, NewsX and CNN News 18.

A short while ago, BARC issued a clarification to indiantelevision.com stating that multiple LCN placement is rampant in the news television industry and nobody can call the kettle black. Said it in a statement:

“The fact is that this is a common distribution strategy among various TV channels, particularly News Broadcasters, to place their channels on multiple LCNs and across genres in the past, and they continue to do so even now.

Based on information collected from various monitoring agencies we have seen that multiple English news channels on different occasions have placed themselves on multiple LCNs viz across 64 distribution networks during rebranding/revamp, across 16 networks during budget coverage, across 12 networks during UP elections etc. It has become a usual practice.”

“We have a transparent policy on the matter of measuring channels, (which is available on our website http://bit.ly/2dllmIp). This policy has been consistently applied to all channels who subscribe to our measurement.

“We are clear about our position – we measure viewership of channels basis their unique Watermark ID, irrespective of the platform the channel is available on or the number of instances within the platform. For channels having same watermark on more than one LCN, viewership gets aggregated and reported as a single channel and not multiple channels. BARC India neither monitors channel placements across the various DTH platforms/cable head-ends in the country, nor does it have the mandate to do so.

“In the past, we have measured multiple LCN instances of channels as per our policy, and reported them as one channel and the same principle has been applied to our data released yesterday. BARC India is not the regulatory body for resolving issues concerning multiplicity of LCNs for a channel.

“Ideally these issues should be sorted among broadcasters themselves rather than dragging BARC India into these.

BARC India will continue to measure what India watches.”

  • “Dual LCNs is not the best thing to do” — Chrome Data CEO Pankaj Krishna

The dual and multiple LCNs issue has sparked off a furore with English news television channels after Republic TV announced eye-popping numbers in week one of its launch.  The media has been buffeted with leaked complaints to the regulator by news channels against one another and the viewership monitoring agency – the Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC India).

Chrome Data  Analytics & Media has been monitoring cable TV and DTH networks with its own household panels. And, its founder & CEO Pankaj Krishna has been on the frontlines where the action is. We got in touch with him to get his views on the English news channel fracas and what it all means.

    Excerpts from the interview:

    Q. What’s your take on Republic TV’s distribution?

As per the Chrome data released on 15 May, Republic had already managed the highest OTS at 65 per cent as per Chrome track 2.0, in Week 19 (6 May – 12 May), All India Urban Market, in the English News genre.

Further, if you were to factor in the impact of distribution on the BARC Reach/Coverage – as per our predictive DPi (a Chrome proprietary tool which gives the direct impact of distribution on channel trials) taking into account Chrome Data released on Monday, that is, 15   May, 2017, Republic TV was well headed to take on the number one slot across India on the ratings panel.

In fact in the current week 20, with a Dual LCN count 43 headends, translating to dual OTS viewer, OTS of 68.2 per cent (Part data captured Chrome OTS Data till Thursday, 18 May, 7 PM), Republic TV is well on its way to making trade headlines for week 20 as well (Saturday 13 to Friday 19 May).

According to you, does dual LCN help channels increase their viewership?

Yes, it does. The objective of dual LCN could be to monetise the simplest law of probability on the ratings. For example, if you were to visit a supermarket, higher visibility of a product leads to impulse buying. Similarly, the channel with higher availability increases the chances of higher visibility, which eventually escalates viewership.

    Source: Chrome SES, Week 20 (13 May-19 May 2017)

    So, is it ethical?

Whether it is ethical or unethical is a call that should be taken by the regulators. It is beyond our purview. Looking at the larger picture, I probably would say it is not the best thing to do because if one channel opts for dual/multiple LCNs, others are compelled to follow it to safeguard their numbers, consequently causing a spiralling effect on the carriage fees. We track 1277 channels as on 18  May, 2017 (available for downlink in India), however, in linear TV, the operators can carry only 106 channels on analogue, and approximately 300 on digital – resulting in a gap in supply and demand. Dual LCNs add to this gap by further blocking LCNs.

What else is Republic doing to escalate viewership?

There are primarily two ways of impacting channel trials – consumer pull led by content affinity, and broadcaster push led by distribution initiatives. Republic TV had made it in both. So yes, dual LCNS do have a direct positive impact on the viewership. Consumer pull clubbed with strategic distribution planning has a huge impact on the overall performance of a channel.

There are several other factors that boost ratings of a channel, such as the content, on-air-presentation and many more. As per Chrome OAP track (anchor delivery, graphical interaction with expert panel members, treatment to live coverage, type of stories, screen-packaging etc.), Republic TV has outscored its competition average.

To a great extent, it happens across the industry including all the genres. Whether a broadcaster does it, or it happens on-ground by a cable operator to fill the blank LCNs is beyond our audits.

However, owing to bandwidth constraints, the former seems to be more likely. A number of TV channels across India are seen available on dual LCNs to reach out to more audience. Dual/multiple LCNs are mostly seen during blockbuster events (such as budgets for the business news genre) and during new launches as a part of the channel’s marketing exercise.
