    R-Day, pre-Budget prep, Delhi election help news channels gain viewership

    MUMBAI: The 71st Republic Day, Budget 2020 preparation and Delhi election campaigns have kept news channels across genres busy, Broadcasting Audience Research Council India portrays in its week 4 data between 25 January and 31 January.

    The TV Today Group’s Aaj Tak has topped the Hindi news segment with 133942 weekly impressions, of which the channel received 54244 weekly impressions in rural and 79699 weekly impressions in urban.

    Gaining at least 106097 weekly impressions, Zee News bagged the second spot in the Hindi news genre in the week 4 report of BARC. The channel achieved 41453 weekly impressions in the rural segment and 64644 in urban.

    Network 18’s News18 India was ranked third with 100395 weekly impressions, followed by India TV at fourth position and Republic Bharat at fifth, both channels received 91481 and 90594 impressions respectively.

    In English genre, Republic TV clinched the top position with 749 weekly impressions, followed by DD India which garnered 713 weekly impressions in Week 4 of BARC. DD India had exclusive rights to telecast the Republic day event, which perhaps helped the channel to gain more eyeballs.

    Times Now being settled at the third position has garnered 515 weekly impressions in Week 4 of BARC. Whereas, India Today Television at fourth position and CNN News18 at fifth spot with 368 and 237 weekly impressions respectively.

    As the budget preparation being the major focus, the business news channel CNBC TV18 of Network18 has gained 275 weekly impressions, followed by Times group’s ET NOW with 123 weekly impressions.

    MUMBAI: Music genre has become the top gainer in week 4 2020 of Chrome Data Analytics and Media data. The genre grew by 0.46 per cent. In this genre, Sony Mix channel gained the highest OTS with 92.5 per cent in HSM excluding <1 lakh market.

    OTS is the actual census-based percentage connectivity of a channel spread across 81 million homes, as reported by Chrome DM, across analogue cable, digital cable, and DTH.

    This week, Hindi movies gained second position and grew by 0.30 per cent in HSM excluding <1 lakh market. In this genre, B4U Kadak channel gained the highest OTS with 92.4 per cent. English news genre stood in the third position by gaining 0.08 per cent in  six metros market. RajyaSabha TV secured the highest OTS with 100 per cent.

    MUMBAI: In the regional space, new channel Zee Biskope has entered the Bhojpuri market in the leading position. In Gujarati space Colors Gujarati Cinema grabbed the first position. In Bangla space Star Jalsha moved to first position from second. No changes were observed in Marathi space, Tamil space and Telegu space.

    In Bangla space, Star Jalsa, Zee Bangla, Jalsa Movies, Colors Bangla, Sun Bangla were the top five channels BARC ratings week 3.

    MUMBAI:  In week 3 of BARC India ratings, Colors continued to lead the list in the urban space and in pay platform also. Star Plus continued to hold its place in second position. This week in urban market Sony Entertainment Television slipped to fifth position from fourth. Zee TV moved to fourth position from fifth.

    English News viewership decline continues in week 3 of 2020

    BENGALURU: Viewership of English News channels continued a downward spiral in in week 3 of 2020 (Saturday, 18 January 2020 to Friday, 24 January 2020, week under review). Analysis of Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) data of 44 weeks between week 13 of 2019 and week 3 of 2020 reveals that the four week combined average viewership of the top 5 English News channels declined 23 percent for week 53 of 2019 and week 3 of 2020  (4 week period under review) to 1.724 million weekly impressions as compared to the average combined viewership of the 44 week period of 2.235 million weekly impressions. Viewership during the period under review declined 15.1 percent from 2.032 million weekly impressions calculated for the immediate trailing 4 week period (week 49 to week 52 of 2019).

    The last few weeks have been reasonably eventful. Among the newsworthy happenings include the fact that the fall out of the Citizenship Amendment Act is still unfolding, not only in India but in other geographies as well. Further, assembly elections for the state of Delhi have been announced, the lawyers of the condemned Nirbhaya rapists managed to delay their executions to the first of February. Please refer to the figure below for the four week average of combined ratings of top 5 English News channels between weeks 13 of 2019 and 3 of 2020.

    It must be noted that BARC had stopped publishing data in the public domain between weeks 6 and 12 of 2019 to allow for ratings to stabilize after the implementation of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) New Tariff Order (NTO), hence data between weeks 13 of 2019 and 3 of 2020 has been considered in this paper. Though the combined ratings of the top 5 English News channels in week 3 of 2020 were slightly higher than those of the immediate trailing week (week 2 of 2020), they were 24 percent lower than the 44 week average.

    The figure below shows that combined ratings of the top 5 English News channels between week 13 of 2019 and week 3 of 2020.

    Ranks 1, 2  and were held by the same channels in week 3 of 2020 as in the previous week – Republic TV, Times Now and India Today TV retained places 1, 2 and 3 respectively. DD India pushed its way to fourth rank from fifth rank in week 3 of 2020,  while CNN News18 dropped to fifth place from fourth. Please refer to the figure below: 

    Two channels lost viewership in week 3 of 2020 – CNN News18 and Republic TV as compared to the previous week, while the other 3 made slight gains. Arnab Goswami’sfirst placed Republic TV saw viewership decline by 5 percent to 0.568 million weekly impressions from 0.598 million. At rank two, Times Now saw viewership climb 11 percent to 0.472 million weekly impressions from 0.425 million weekly impressions. Third ranked India Today Television saw  viewership increase 4.3 percent to 0.265 million weekly impressions in week 3 of 2020 from 0.254 million weekly impressions in week 2. At rank 4, DD India saw viewership rise 7.3 percent to 0.207 million weekly impressions in week 3 of 2020 from 0.193 million weekly impressions in the previous week. CNN News18 saw ratings decline 12.3 percent to 0.186 million weekly impressions  in week 3 of 2020 from 0.212 million weekly impressions in week 2.

    MUMBAI: Star India has announced the launch of Star Gold 2, its latest offering in the Hindi movie channel category. In an industry-first move, the network is introducing movie theatre’s “multiplex strategy” to the small screen, enabling it to showcase the myriad premieres of the newly acquired Bollywood movies on both Star Gold and Star Gold 2.

    Star Gold has acquired 25 recently released blockbusters and upcoming Bollywood movies of 2020, further strengthening its library of over 1500 titles including Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Baaghi 3, ’83, Angrezi Medium, Panga, War, Chhapaak, Bala, Housefull 4, Mardaani 2, among others. Starting 1 February , viewers will be able to enjoy hits starring leading Bollywood talent – Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar, Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan, Sara Ali Khan, Kartik Aaryan and more on both channels.

    “Consumers are at the front and center of everything we do. Having acquired the latest top quality Bollywood content of 2020, it made perfect business sense to launch a second screen to be able to showcase the best of Hindi cinema to our viewers,” said Star India Hindi Movies Business executive vice president and GM  Hemal Jhaveri.

    Over the years, Star Gold has been amongst the leading destinations for the latest Bollywood Blockbusters, consistently delivering the biggest movie line-up on Indian television. With the launch of the new channel, the brand will continue to showcase the latest hits now across two screens — Star Gold and Star Gold 2.

    Star Gold 2 will be available for viewers from 1 February, 2020, across leading DTH and cable platforms. A multi-touchpoint marketing campaign will go live to support the launch of the channel.

    Sports genre becomes top gainer in Chrome DM week 3

    MUMBAI: Sports genre has become the top gainer in week 3, 2020 of Chrome Data Analytics and Media data. The genre grew by 8.48 per cent. In this genre, DD Sports channel gained the highest OTS with 98.4 per cent in all India 1 lakh+ market.

    OTS is the actual census-based percentage connectivity of a channel spread across 86 million homes, as reported by Chrome DM, across analogue cable, digital cable, and DTH.

    This week, religious gained second position and grew by 0.89 per cent in HSM excluding <1 lakh market. In this genre, Sanskar channel gained the highest OTS with 99.5 per cent. Hindi news genre stood in the third position by gaining 0.87 per cent in HSM excluding <1 lakh market. APB News secured the highest OTS with 99.9 per cent.

    English GEC genre stood in the fourth position in six metros market and grew by 0.82 per cent. Comedy Central channel gained the highest OTS with 43.2 per cent. English news genre stood at the fifth position in  six metros market and grew by 0.75 per cent. Loksabha TV  secured the highest OTS with 100.0 per cent.

    Sun TV regains most watched channel across genres top spot

    BENGALURU: The Sun TV Network’s flagship Tamil GEC Sun TV was ranked first in Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly list of Top 10 Channels Across Genres on All Platforms in week 2 of 2020 (Saturday, 11 January 2020 to Friday, 17January 2020, week or period under consideration). This was the first time in 2020 and the first time since week 36 of 2019 that the channel regained what was its regular top spot during earlier periods before the implementation of Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) New Tariff Order (NTO).

    Five Hindi GECs’, two Telugu GECs, and one channel each from the Kannada, Kids and Tamil genres made up BARCs’ weekly list of Top Channels Across Genres on All Platforms in week 2 of 2020. From the network’s perspective there were three channels from Star India, two channels each fromViacom18/Network18 and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) and one channel each from Enterr 10 Television, Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) and the Sun Tv Network. Nine of the channels were pay TV and one channel, ranked second – Dangal, was free to air (FTA).

    Dangal, which was ranked first since week 37 of 2019 and even earlier, dropped a place to second rank during the week under review.

    Top 10 Pay Channels Across Genres in week 2 of 2020

    As has become a norm, the top two pay channels in week 2 of 2020 were not Hindi GECs, they were a Tamil GEC and a Telugu GEC at ranks one and two respectively. Star India’s flagship Telugu GEC Star Maa replaced its network sibling Hindi GEC Star Plus at rank 2 in BARC’s weekly list of Top 10 Pay Channels Across Genres in week 2 of 2020. 

    Five Hindi GECs’, two Telugu channels and one channel each from the Kannada, Kids and Tamil genres were present in BARC’s weekly list of Top 10 Pay Channels Across Genres in week 2 of 2020. There were three channels from Star India, two channels each from SPN, Viacom18 and Zeel and one channel from the Sun Tv Network in the top 10 list during the period under consideration.

    Top 10 Free to Air Channels Across Genres in week 2 of 2020

    Three channels from the Hindi Movies genre, two channels each from the Bhojpuri and Hindi GEC genres and one channel each from the Marathi, Music and Sports genres made BARC’s weekly list of Top 10 Free to Air Channels Across Genres in week 2 of 2020.  The nail biting India-Australia T20 cricket series has helped increase viewership of DD Sports, bringinr it into the fold of top 10 FTA channels across genres list during the past few weeks. Four of the channels were  from Enterr 10 Television network, three channels from Zeel, two channels from B4U and channel from pubcaster network Doordarshan in BARC’s weekly list of Top 10 Free to Air Channels Across Genres in week 2 of 2020.     MUMBAI: In week 2 of BARC India ratings, Colors continues to lead the list again in the urban space on pay platform. In the rural space and free platform, there are some minor changes in the pecking order of the list. 

    In the urban market Star Plus slipped down to the second position in week 2. Colors, Star Plus, SONY SAB, Sony Entertainment Television, Zee TV, Dangal, STAR Bharat, &TV, STAR Utsav and Big Magic are the top ten channels.
