DD Bharati explores music and monsoon with two new shows

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan is presenting its own ode to the monsoon – which is awaited by all to give a relief from the scorching heat – with two programmes which highlight the ragas and melodies based on classical music inspired by the rains.

DD Bharati will telecast Ghan Garaje featuring Pt. Kumar Gandharva and Shobha Gurtu, on 19 July at 09:00 pm. The show will also see a repeat on 20 July at 05:00 am and 01:00 pm. This will be followed by an archival presentation The exalted portals of Thumri on 20 July at 9.00 pm and the repeat telecast at 5.00 am and 1.00 pm on 21 July.

In Ghan Garaje, Gandharva and Gurtu will revoke Lord Indra (Rain God) with their music. In The exalted portals of Thumri, one can come closer to the three thumri queens —Naina Devi, Begum Akhtar and Girija Devi.

The three regale their audience with their thumri repertoire. It is a virtual treat for those who have never heard them before as Naina Devi sings thumri, Begum Akhtar dwells on joli and Girija Devi recites a dadra.

According to Doordarshan, there is a firm belief in Indians that music can change everything and it is the only art which remains pure irrespective of its form. Whether it is sung, played or heard, music never changes but influences those who are a part of its depth and untouched beauty.

DD Bharati has also attempted to question people’s knowledge of the beauty of ragas. For example, while a few still remember Raga Deepak or Raga Amruthavarshini, the next generation is generally unaware of Baiju Bawra, Meera, Urvashi and her powers.

The aim of DD Bharati is to revive these bits of knowledge that is slowly disappearing, through its programmes on Indian art and culture and take them to an international level.

Work begins on new Vijayawada DD Kendra for Andhra Pradesh

NEW DELHI: The Government yesterday confirmed that it had received a proposal to create an interim set-up at the regional kendra of Doordarshan in Vijayawada to cater to the cultural and economic identities of Andhra Pradesh following bifurcation of the state.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar informed Parliament yesterday that the proposal had been received from the DD Kendra at Hyderabad to start, on an interim basis, a two hour terrestrial transmission from 5 pm to 7 pm everyday including a 15 minute Telugu news bulletin.

The rest 22 hours will be relayed from DDK Hyderabad, since DDK Vijayawada is currently only a programme generating facility (PGF).

Earlier, DD sources had told indianlevision.com that the aim would be to ultimately turn the Vijayawada Kendra into a 24-hour Kendra because the Hyderabad Kendra would become a part of the new state Telangana.

Consequently, Doordarshan has started planning production and transmission facilities that are similar to its Kendra in Hyderabad.

Doordarshan has already taken an initiative to upgrade the existing facilities of Doordarshan Kendra at Vijayawada which presently has one 150 square metre studio and a teleport satellite uplinking facility.

Doordarshan director general Tripurari Sharan and additional director general VK Jain recently visited the Vijayawada Kendra and discussed widespread plan for its upgradation with engineering and programme officers. Sharan asked officers to fast-track its upgradation plan and complete it in a time bound manner, directing Jain to personally monitor the progress.

The DD Saptagiri channel running from Hyderabad will be renamed DD Telangana and the DD Saptagiri channel will be retained for residual state of Andhra Pradesh.

  • Govt yet to work out details of Krishi channel, says I&B Ministry

Govt yet to work out details of Krishi channel, says I&B Ministry

NEW DELHI: Even as details are being worked out by Prasar Bharati in consultation with the stakeholders for a Krishi (farmer) channel as outlined by the finance minister Arun Jaitley in his budget, no definite timeframe has been fixed for commencement of the channel.

Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry sources said this will depend on availability of resources and manpower after the details have been worked out.

Jaitley had announced in his budget speech on 10 July that a sum of Rs 100 crore would be allocated for this channel. However, the budget for the I&B Ministry shows an allocation of Rs 90 crore for this in the year 2014-15.

Meanwhile, the Krishi Darshan programmes of Doordarshan are being telecast under the ‘mass media support to agriculture extension’ funded by the Agriculture Ministry focussing on dissemination of modern agricultural techniques by involving experts from various fields like insurance, banking, credit for farmers, state government schemes on agriculture/ fisheries/veterinary science/water and soil conservation/social forestry etc.

In addition, a recently introduced programme Mera Gaon Connection telecast at prime time on DD National also introduces modern agricultural techniques to the viewers.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Sanjeev Kumar Balyan told Parliament that the “mass media support to agricultural extension and focused publicity campaigns has been strengthened to reach out to all farmers including small and marginal.”

The audio and video spots and success stories are being aired through All India Radio (AIR), Doordarshan and private channels operating at the national and regional level.

The other component of the mass media initiative is the use of 96 FM Transmitters of AIR to broadcast area specific agricultural programmes with 30 minutes radio transmission in the evening six days a week. Focused advertisement campaigns which cut across all the divisions of the ministry have been continuing since July 2010.

The campaigns are being launched through print as well as electronic media to create awareness about the assistance available under various schemes of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation.

  • New series on DD News to highlight ecological threats to river Ganga

New series on DD News to highlight ecological threats to river Ganga

NEW DELHI: ‘Taaki Bahti Rahe Ganga,’ a show that traces the course of the holy river Ganga from its source Gangotri to Gangasagar even as it conveys the message of keeping the waters clean and pure, has been launched by DD News.

The six-episode documentary which commenced telecast from 6 July, will be aired every Sunday at 9:30 pm with a repeat telecast on Monday at 3:30pm. It is documentation by three reporters who have made an effort to make it interactive.

They have interviewed and taken opinions of those who are living on the bank of the river in different parts of the country. The reporters have also taken views of scientists, environmentalists, religious leaders and policy makers and this helped them get to the root cause of issues like pollution, erosion, floods, unregulated urbanisation, mindless development and encroachment along Ganga.

The channel has made this documentary series to activate the people on the banks where it flows into taking care of river waters which give them so much.

DD News DG S M Khan said, “This is not a generic show which only talks about the matter-of-the-fact problems but deals with pulsating problems pertaining to specific regions. For example, in Uttarakhand, the focus is on the factors affecting the flow of the river while pollution and health issues dominate the discussion in Uttar Pradesh and the main concern in Bihar and Bengal is over pollution and erosion.”

Doordarshan News is giving high priority to creating awareness about the problems concerning the holy river of the country and is generating participation of people to address the problems.

  • Doordarshan brings back ‘Ek the Rusty’

Doordarshan brings back ‘Ek the Rusty’

NEW DELHI: The young lad known for his winsome ways, Rusty, has grown up. When he was introduced to viewers through Doordarshan, he was less than 10 years old, but is now in his early 30s.

The age has not reduced his charm, because he remains popular in the hills of Mussoorie.

This character by renowned author Ruskin Bond who himself lives in the Mussoorie hills, was introduced to Indian audiences in the series ‘Ek tha Rusty’. This series now begins its third season with a curtain-raiser on 10 July. The show will be telecast every week on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7.00 pm.

Doordarshan director general Tripurari Sharan said that for the first time, this series was being telecast on a revenue-sharing basis with its producer-director Shubhadarshini Singh.

He informed that this meant that the producer will now be involved with the series from the day it begins telecast, unlike in a commissioned serial where the producer’s work ends the moment a programme is handed over to the channel. Apart from this, DD is now getting into another model where it asks some producers of getting ad-funded series, which according to Sharan was different from sponsored series.

He said that DD had gone on a marketing binge in recent months and the results had begun to show even in TAM, which was essentially confined to the metros and the larger cities.

Asked why DD was still reluctant to advertise on TV channels outside Doordarshan, Sharan said the costs were very high. However, he said marketing was already being done through hoardings, promos on other DD channels and All India Radio, in newspapers, and on websites.

DD was also very active on social media and the Facebook page had more than a million followers.  In addition, the channel was active on Twitter and on YouTube as well.

Referring to ‘Ek tha Rusty’, he said the series had its own Facebook page.  Shubhadarshini informed that the series had already been mentioned on private news channels as news items.

“Although the series is on a revenue-sharing basis, I have been given full freedom and there is no executive producer from DD on the programme,” said Shubhadarshini.

Furthermore, she added ‘Ek tha Rusty’ was not just a series for children as in the past but for family audiences.  Admittedly, the storyline was male-dominated, she said. “I feed on the nostalgia in Ruskin Bond’s stories and I could never change his ideas and visions…in fact the author has helped us bring out the best in music, songs and  all the nuances which I think makes this series so special.”

The new series has the touch of Ruskin Bond’s well-known inimitable style, trademark humour and profound simplicity.

In a message, Ruskin Bond said, “As a boy, reading was my religion. It helped me to discover my soul. Later, writing helped me to record its journey.”

This series is conceptualised around: the sensational new novel ‘Maharani’ by Ruskin Bond and a very touching story of Rusty and his inner turmoil when he makes friends with an Anglo Indian who is in hiding because he has leprosy… this is in flashback of Rusty as a teenager.

  • DD National’s ‘Rangoli’ still a favourite

DD National’s ‘Rangoli’ still a favourite

NEW DELHI: Rangoli, Doordarshan’s slightly more modern version of the popular song-based Chitrahaar, has become the programme with the highest TVM – four – during the 8.00 am to 9.00 am slot on Sunday.

Most general entertainment channels fail to capitalise on this early morning hour.

DD sources told indiantelevision.com that the main reason was that the choice of songs for this specific programme is made with utmost care and based on the feedback of viewers. The songs included in the programme are mostly old melodious songs, which attracts those who love songs of an earlier era. This makes the channel number one during this time band.

The rating is based on the TAM chart for the week 26 (22 June to 28 June’ 2014) when DD National attracted gross viewership of 4 TVM which was the highest amongst all GECs.

Earlier, DD National had claimed that it was the number one channel amongst all GEC’s in terms of time spent by viewers and the TAM data for week 26 indicates that it topped with 92 minutes TSV as compared to 90 minutes as recorded for Sony.

  • DD National tops in ‘time spent in viewing’ numbers

DD National tops in ‘time spent in viewing’ numbers

NEW DELHI: DD National is the number one channel among all GEC’s in terms of time spent by viewers and the TAM data for week 26 from 22-28 July 2014 indicates that it topped with 92 minutes TSV as compared to 90 minutes as recorded for Sony.

The higher numbers indicate that after switching to the channel, viewers have preferred to continuously watch the channel rather than frequently switching to other channels.

DD National is also reported to be ranked three in terms of overall average viewership in early morning time band of 6 am to 8 am. The viewership of DD National channel is rising rapidly during mid prime time band from 12 pm to 3 pm as it has slotted six new family based fresh serials during this band and renamed this band as DD Dopahar.

However, an analysis done by Doordarshan itself indicates that the viewership of the channel can be higher if multi-system operators fully comply with the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act 1995 as many are still not complying with the ‘Must Carry’ clause and the carriage of the national channel is still badly affected in analogue cable networks.

Thus, DD National channel is regaining its lost ground as it has also seen rapid growth in overall viewership numbers in prime time and morning prime time of Sunday.

Its environment based programme Earth Matters directed by the renowned Mike Pandey is becoming popular among all sections of society, indicating that the channel is liked by viewers for wholesome entertainment and information based programmes and for lot of fresh programming dished out to viewers unlike other channels who are most dependent on repeat programmes and are run on six to eight hours cycle.
