    MUMBAI: It’s lobbed the ball in the viewers’ court, with a cross court shot near the baseline.   Will Indian TV viewers manage to give an equally good return?

    Sony Sports Network will be telecasting the inaugural World Pickleball League (WPBL), set to debut on 24 January 2025. This franchise-based league aims to capitalise on the sport’s rapid growth in India, where more than 50,000 players are actively participating, and nearly 1,000 pickleball courts have emerged nationwide.

    Conceptualised by former tennis star Gaurav Natekar and ex-India No. 1 Arati Ponnappa Natekar, the WPBL promises thrilling “sportainment” with six teams—Dilli Dillwale, Pune United, Mumbai Pickle Power, Bengaluru Jawans, Chennai Super Champs, and Hyderabad Superstars—facing off in 18 high-stakes matches over ten days. The tournament will feature 48 elite international players from 14 countries, alongside India’s top talents, including Vrushali Thakare and Mayur Patil.

    Sony Pictures Networks India chief revenue officer & head of sports business Rajesh Kaul said: “The addition of the World Pickleball League affirms our efforts to provide diverse sporting content to our viewers.”

    MUMBAI: It’s driven right into a “pickular” partnership. Swedish car maker Volvo Car India has come on board the  World Pickleball League (WPBL) as official luxury mobility partner.  Unconfirmed estimates are that it has put in about Rs 50 lakh for the privilege.

    Founded by former top tennis players Gaurav Natekar and Arati Ponnappa Natekar, the WPBL aims to capture wide audiences through thrilling competitions and entertainment. The league will feature six teams competing in 48 matches over ten days, complemented by performances from renowned Indian artists.

    Natekar expressed pride in the partnership with Volvo, stating, “This collaboration underscores the league’s broad appeal and promise of high-octane action.”

    Volvo Card India MD Jyoti Malhotra added, “We are thrilled to support WPBL and believe it will significantly boost the sport’s popularity and engage discerning audiences who value luxury and performance.”

    The inaugural edition kicks off on 24 January, with tickets available on Swiggy Scenes and live coverage on FanCode. The  iconic Brabourne Stadium, will be playing host, marking the first time the historic venue will be holding  a non-cricket tournament, adding a new chapter to its illustrious legacy.

    The WPBL promises a unique blend of sports and entertainment, featuring performances from renowned artists including Dhvani Bhanushali, Suhani Shah, and the popular band The Yellow Diary. Fans can expect high-energy acts to complement the intense pickleball matches, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

    The opening day will feature thrilling matchups, including a much-anticipated Maharashtra derby where Mumbai Pickle Power faces Pune United, followed by a southern derby with Atlee’s Bengaluru Jawans taking on Samantha Prabhu’s Chennai Champs.

    The WPBL, promoted by Natekar Sports&  Gaming, is committed to growing the fandom for  pickleball in India through engaging events, community building, and grassroots initiatives in franchise cities. Season 3 is already showing massive potential, and we’re aiming to nurture this 3-year-old property into a HUGE success.”

    So, could ILT20 become cricket’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa? If Zee’s track record is anything to go by, the answer is yes.

    The tournament isn’t just about budding stars-it’s also stacked with cricketing royalty. Harbhajan Singh, with a whopping 711 international wickets, continues to bring his insights to the commentary box. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar-dubbed the “Rawalpindi Express”-is back as an ambassador, ready to electrify fans with his unmatched cricketing charisma.

    MUMBAI: The Tata Mumbai Marathon, a hallmark in the global running community, is set to celebrate its twentieth  edition this Sunday 19 January. First held in 2004, this World Athletics Gold Label Road Race has blossomed into a prestigious event, serving as a launchpad for numerous athletes’ careers.

    In its storied history, the marathon has played a crucial role in helping athletes qualify for prestigious international events, including the World Championships and Olympic Games. Notably, South African Hendrik Ramaala, the inaugural winner in 2004, went on to capture the New York Marathon later that year, underscoring the event’s significance.

    This year, the race will feature last year’s champions from Ethiopia, Lemi Berhanu and Aberash Minsewo, both vying to defend their titles. With Berhanu aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive win, he is poised to make history at the Tata Mumbai Marathon.

    “My preparation for the Mumbai Marathon has been excellent, especially after Beijing,” Berhanu stated in a recent press conference. “I have experience with this course and believe my focus and guidance from my coach will be key to my success.”

    Joining Berhanu in the men’s elite category is Bazezew Asmare, who recently overcame a minor injury. “I’m fully fit and prepared for Sunday. A good result will propel my career forward, and I am eager to represent Ethiopia on the world stage,” Asmare said. 

    Also in the mix is Kenyan Philemon Rono, a three-time Mumbai winner, who expressed confidence in a comeback following a challenging previous season. “I’ve prepared meticulously for this race despite running a marathon just six weeks ago. Winning is my primary focus this Sunday to pave the way for representing Kenya in the World Championships,” Rono remarked.

    The elite women’s field features Minsewo, who is looking to build on her inaugural marathon victory from last year. “I feel much more prepared this time around and I’m eager to showcase my skills on this familiar course,” Minsewo shared confidently.

    Ethiopian runner Shitaye Eshete, who has transitioned from track events to road marathons, reflected on her journey: “Marathons provide more opportunities for success, but transitioning has been a learning experience that requires high mileage and consistent training,” she explained.
     
    Shuko Genemo, another contender, echoed similar sentiments about the importance of preparation. “I’ve trained rigorously and understand the Mumbai course well. I believe hard work will lead to success,” Genemo noted.

    The race, with a prize purse of $389,524, will reward the top three finishers in both the men’s and women’s categories, with prizes of $50,000, $25,000, and $15,000. Additional bonuses are available for athletes who break existing event records, which are currently held by Ethiopian runners Lemi Berhanu (2:07:32) and Anchialem Haymanot (2:24:15) since 2023.

    ICC releases invitation to tender for pathway events from 2025-2027

    MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has  released its invitation to tender (ITT) for various rights for ICC Pathway Events from 2025 up until the end of 2027.

    Following the successful conclusion of the production and distribution of ICC Pathway Events from 2021-2024, the ICC is now starting the process for the next cycle.

    The one combined package consists of 56 Pathway events comprising of 1246 matches across Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cups 2026 and 2028 and Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

    The bundled rights include broadcast rights, event sponsorship rights, data rights and the successful bidder will also have the obligation to produce all matches. The successful bidder will have exclusivity to show the events live in India while the matches will be beamed live on the ICC’s OTT platform, ICC.tv in the rest of the world.

    ICC chief commercial officer Anurag Dahiya said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for ICC Pathway Events. They play an important role in the development of cricket across our Emerging Members and provide context to ICC global flagship events. With the competitive and exciting cricket showcased in these events, the next three years present a fantastic opportunity to engage and strengthen relationships with fans across markets globally.”

    MUMBAI: It’s in crackling, explosive form. Betway SA20 has kicked off its third season with a record-breaking opening match viewership, surpassing previous records and solidifying its position as a major force in South African cricket.

    The opening match between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town drew a record 382,778 live unique viewers on SuperSport, a 129 per cent  increase from Season 2. This makes it the second-highest recorded live opening viewership number on SuperSport this summer, behind the T20 series between the Proteas and India.

    Additionally, the opening week saw record attendance numbers, with four sold-out matches and an 79 per cent attendance rate across six matches. The fans have enthusiastically embraced the cricket and entertainment experience, setting the stage for a successful tournament.

    League commissioner Graeme Smith attributed the success to the collective efforts of the franchises, SuperSport, and the fans, saying, “We’ve worked hard to establish the league as a property that appeals to viewers at home and those who come to the stadium. These numbers give us the confidence that we’re on the right track to building on a strong foundation. The league has come to be recognised as amongst the best in the world after the IPL. Most people did not give us a chance of succeeding.”

    Nielsen Sports SA managing director Tumelo Selikane added, “We’re thrilled with the response to the Betway SA20 league. The strong viewership numbers are a testament to the league’s growing popularity and the exceptional work of SuperSport and the League.”

    Betway SA20’s success has also attracted new sponsors, further solidifying its commercial value and appeal. As the tournament progresses, the league is poised for continued success, with strong viewership numbers and growing commercial appeal.

    MUMBAI: The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (Nascar)   announced on 16 January the upcoming launch of the Nascar Channel, a free ad-supported television (FAST) channel set to go live on  29 January in partnership with Tubi. This channel will provide fans with 24/7 access to Nascar  content at no subscription cost or registration.

    The Nascar channel will feature a diverse lineup of programming, including classic races, replays of the current season’s events, documentaries, original content from Nascar studios, and video podcasts.

    Key highlights of the launch include exclusive live coverage of the Nascar  Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on 7 February and the Cook Out Madhouse Classic from Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on 1 February. 

    The channel will also delve into its archives to showcase iconic races from the Daytona 500 and The Cook Out Clash, alongside delayed replays of the 2025 season’s races.
