ICC releases news access regulations for Indian news broadcasters ahead of WC

MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released its news access regulations for broadcasters in India intending to report on the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and its warm-up matches which will be staged across 14 venues in Australia and New Zealand from 10 February to 29 March 2015.

The regulations are solely for bona fide news broadcasters registered under the category of News and Current Affairs channels according to Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s downlinking guidelines. The regulations have been based on and reflect the current law in India governing news access. The regulations will remain in full force and effect until 24 hours after the end of the last match of the event.

To ensure complete fulfillment of the news access regulations, the council will be appointing a media agency to monitor compliance with the regulations. In the event of any non-compliance it will take legal action against the non-compliant party; such action may include issuing proceedings and/or seeking injunctive relief.

Some of the guidelines state that a designated broadcaster may telecast a maximum total of five and half minutes of footage per news day during its news and other programmes. The broadcast of any footage may be repeated during a news day and any permitted repeat shall not count towards the maximum total allowed.

Use of live footage by a news broadcaster is not permitted at any time under any circumstances. There must be a minimum of at least thirty minutes delay following the broadcast of any live footage by the official/host broadcaster before any extract of such footage may be used by the broadcaster. However they are permitted to interrupt regular news programmes and/or other news programmes to broadcast footage using the caption ‘breaking news’ or such equivalent, only for a period not exceeding fifteen seconds and for no more than one exhibition of footage within thirty  minutes following the broadcast of such live footage by the official host to report the achievement of an important personal milestone by a player (for example, a hat-trick of wickets falling, 100 wickets being taken, or  1000 runs being scored) or other exceptional events that may occur during any match of the mega event.

No use of any footage is permitted in any circumstance for any commercial purposes. In the event that the official event or the logo of its appointed broadcast licensee in India (i.e., Star India) should be covered by the logo of the broadcaster. It must include a courtesy line extended at the bottom of, or elsewhere, on the screen.

  • Upcoming leagues have helped unleash potential for Sports Business: FICCI report

Upcoming leagues have helped unleash potential for Sports Business: FICCI report

MUMBAI: While a number of sports leagues have been launched in India recently, the sports industry is still in its infancy stage which can be exploited not only by commercially viable large leagues but also other businesses of sports like events, academies, elite and other coaching institutes, niche sports science backup services and so on according to FICCI’s recent report on the sports business titled – Business of Sports Aiming Higher Reaching Further. The main purpose according to the body for coming up with report was to look briefly at the sports industry and make some predictions in the upcoming decade.

According to FICCI president Sidharth Birla, the business of sports worldwide has not just been restricted to the playing of sports but it now encompasses a variety of firms covering a wide spectrum of domains.

“Although it is still in a nascent stage in India, its potential has truly been unleashed by the growing number of innovate start-ups in this field. The need of the hour is to increase individual’s interest and rope in private investments in the sports industry, which is almost immaterial” he added.

The paper was released by Sports secretary Ajit M Sharan of the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry who opined that the private sector would have to  participate and partner with the government and the apex chamber to promote sports in the country.

The report says that the Indian Sports Industry runs parallel with the growth of the country’s economy and 4.3 million people would be required in the Indian Sports Industry as workforce by 2025.

FICCI Sports committee chairman and Tata Metaliks MD Sanjeev Paul, speaking about the report, said, “FICCI has taken up the responsibilities to bridge the knowledge gap to aid the Sports Business development in India and to share the real time and up to date information about ongoing initiatives in sports.”

While elaborating on the ongoing Hero Indian Super League (ISL), the paper says the league will provide Indian football fans the opportunity to witness some of the world’s best on home soil, inject much needed energy into the domestic game, improve football infrastructure and raise the commercial value of the sport in the country.

For the ISL, each franchise has been bought for a period of ten years at a cost ranging from Rs 130 crore to Rs 160 crore. Although financials are confidential, the central pool of the ISL is expected to be in the $ 10million to $ 15 million per year range. To further boost and increase revenue franchises have the right to independently procure team sponsors, and the rights to merchandising.

The report also mentions about the investment by four different broadcasters in India for various different sports properties. It says that MSM’s Sony Six has currently invested $ 3.2 billion in broadcast rights for properties such as The Pepsi IPL, UEFA EURO 2016, qualifiers

for EURO-2016, European qualifier for 2018 FIFA World Cup, 2018 FIFA World Cup, TNA, Australian Open Tennis Championships, The NBA and The Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC).

Star Sports India has currently invested $ 242 million for ICC Events, International Premier Tennis League, FIH Event, Summer Olympic Games, Formula one, FIFA Confederation Cup, FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (AFC), AFC Champion Leagues, La Liga, Premier League, Seria A, FA Cup, ISL, Wimbledon etc.

Taj Television’s Ten Sports will invest a little over $ 100 million (Rs 600 crore) in the Indian sporting-related entertainment market, according to sources. Some of its properties include US Open, The Commonwealth Games, Moto GP, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Federation Cup, German Cup, Major League Soccer and Golf, Chennai Open among others.

Nimbus Communications’ Neo Prime and Neo Sports has invested $ 2 million for International Cricket in Bangladesh, Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, Copa America, Rugby World Cup, Bundesliga, UEFA Women’s Championship and Davis Cup.

Highlighting the role played by the government, it says that the Government of India will be opening 70 sports academies in coming ten years in 18 sports disciplines. It is estimated that the Government of India will spend Rs 90 crore per academy. The allocation for the sports and youth affairs ministry for 2014-2015 saw a rise of Rs 561.24 crore, a 46.5 per cent hike from the last fiscal with the government.

In its concluding remarks the report notes that the future seems bright for Indian Sports as it is set to become one of the largest economies of the world by the year 2025 as per projections made by internationally consultants and IMF. Many investors and corporate companies around the world have stepped up in order to take advantage of the growth opportunities offered by Indian markets and many others are keeping a close eye on the subcontinent for investments in coming years.

SC names Srinivasan, Meiyyappan, Kundra and Sundra Raman in Mudgal report

MUMBAI: The Supreme Court of India disclosed the names of ICC chairman N Srinivasan, his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and former Indian Premier League CEO Sundar Raman among the 13 who were investigated by the court-appointed Mudgal committee to look into the corruption in the Indian Premier League (IPL) scam.

The Apex court has also asked that findings of the Mudgal committee report on non-cricketers be disclosed and that a copy of the report be provided to BCCI, Srinivasan and other non-players. Meanwhile BCCI, Srinivasan and other non-players who are named in the report have been asked to file their objections within four days of the receipt. The next hearing will be on 24 November.

Some media reports quoted the court saying, “Certain findings recorded by committee are understood to have indicted some individuals whose conduct has been investigated. We have seen the report and it did suggest some misdemeanour on part of certain individuals.”

Senior advocate Raju Ramachandran, appearing for the Mudgal committee, had submitted that the report does not name any player and they are referred as numbers whose key is kept in a separate report.

It is not clear whether Srinivasan who is seeking to contest the BCCI elections once again will be able to contest the same. The Board AGM, which was scheduled on 20 November has once again been deferred by four weeks and it is the first time in the boards history that it has been put off twice said a report.

  • Bombay HC dismissed conflict of interest petition against N Srinivasan

Bombay HC dismissed conflict of interest petition against N Srinivasan

MUMBAI: Narayanaswami Srinivasan can breathe for a while now. The Bombay High Court has dismissed a public international litigation (PIL) that had challenged the current International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman’s conflict of interest while running the affairs of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

In September, the Cricket Association of Bihar, which had filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court, seeked the appointment of an independent Governance Review Committee that would review the rules and regulations of the cricket body in India.

The PIL allegedly stated that the BCCI was being used as a platform to serve the personal interests of few people including that of Srinivasan, who has been stood down from his position till the Supreme Court adjudicated on the ongoing hearing on corruption in the Indian Premier League.

The PIL has been filed by Cricket Association of Bihar secretary Aditya Verma, who has stated that the rules and regulations of the BCCI have also been allegedly tampered with in such a way that the people could use for their own purposes and points out towards   the spot-fixing scandal in the IPL.  Meanwhile, on 10 November the Supreme Court of India raised a question if Srinivasan could be allowed to head the BCCI in case his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was found to be involved in IPL-6 betting and spot-fixing scandal.

  • We want to create a new category, Sportainment: Uday Sodhi

We want to create a new category, Sportainment: Uday Sodhi

The last couple of years have been good for sports in India. As more and more leagues are launched, the sports channels have a lot to offer to the viewers. And in a bid to capture viewer’s attention, many of them have launched portals.

One such is, LIV Sports from the Multi Screen Media (MSM) stable, which was launched just before the FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil commenced.  It has been a late entrant when compared to its competitors like Tensports.com and starsports.com, but has been able to make a mark in the digital space.

In September, the portal saw former HeadHonchos’s CEO Uday Sodhi taking charge as MSM executive vice president and head digital business to take the portal to the next level. With LIV Sports acquiring the mobile and internet broadcast rights of the UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifiers for India and the Champions Tennis League, the executive spoke to Indiantelevision.com’s Herman Gomes about the portal’s growth so far and his future plans for the site.

    Excerpts…

What is the growth LIV Sports has seen since its launch and in which markets?

The success has been phenomenal. With LIV Sports we are aiming to create a new category of Sportainment or Sports Entertainment. The objective is to empower the sports fan with deep statistics on video as well as engage with the fence sitters.

We registered a record number of downloads and live match views between 13 June and 13 July 2014.  It attracted over 20 million page views in July. Viewers spent on an average of 28 minute watching the live streaming of the matches across online, mobile and the tablet LIV Sports application.

Of the total traction observed on LIV Sports, the maximum percentage of unique views came from the six metros (53 per cent) with Mumbai and Delhi in the lead (13 per cent each), followed by Bengaluru (10 per cent). 83 per cent of the total viewers in the country were within the age bracket of 18-34 years. The World Cup also attracted 25 per cent female viewers; engagements like the Predictor, ‘Mohit Bana Messi – Jerseyfy Me’ and ‘Pehchaan Kaun’ helped achieve this number. We also registered phenomenal numbers in terms of social presence. The Blogger outreach programme enabled a reach of over 2.85 million.

    Technical problems were witnessed initially…

Initially, we did face some technical glitches because of the overwhelming number of active users on our site. But we upgraded our technical capabilities and erased out the issues.

Which are the different audiences the portal seeks to target through its sports entertainment content?

In an attempt to redefine the way sporting content is presented and consumed, LIV Sports has blended sports with a right dose of entertainment. LIV Sports viewers gets the best of both worlds, high quality interactive sports content, comprehensive informative data and analytics as well as fun and entertaining content – keeping every cross section of consumers actively participating with addictive engagements modules.

“My time, my content and my device” is where today’s audience is heading. Consumers want to engage, interact and consume content at their terms, at their convenience and in their method. They want personalised and contextualised experiences with each click. Their attention span is ever-shrinking and secondly, keeping them engaged with the right packaging is thus imperative. And that’s why our focus is on the mobile platform, to create a customised viewing experience and allow them to stay updated with their favourite sports.

It’s been over two months since you took charge. What is on your priority list for the website?

Over the next few months, viewers will be able to catch up with the widest range of sporting content, including football, NBA, UFC, tennis and cricket on LIV Sports. The digital destination offers live and exclusive video content along with a complete coverage of the latest sporting content present, across devices. Our key focus is on mobile platforms to provide both content on live streaming and video on demand for catch-up content. With superior handsets and improved connectivity, we’re witnessing huge growth on mobile and see it as a continuing trend.

What is the revenue model of the same?

We saw significant downloads of the app on both iOS and Android during the FIFA World Cup 2014. Revenue model is subscription and advertising. We worked with partners across categories for FIFA World Cup 2014 and we’re in constant discussion with potential advertisers for upcoming sporting properties.

Do you see e-commerce platforms advertising online on sports websites?

Certainly. E-commerce is a key category and we’ve already worked with brands in this space. LivSports.in offers brands the opportunity to create targeted campaigns for a defined audience.

How do you view the growth of sports platforms in the coming years?

Digital, video, online and mobile is fairly new in sports broadcasting. With the increase in the bandwidth and increase in internet penetration, video consumption overall is going up. With live sports, a publisher/broadcaster needs to have very good infrastructure in place in order to have a large number of users watching the live streaming of the match together, in high quality. We are getting there slowly.

Video inventory in sports is hard to find, since legally licensed rights are expensive and it requires the marketing bandwidth to reach out to the target user group. Football has the second largest viewership after cricket. Interest in the sport is growing, with investment in local leagues as well.

In terms of data points, as per the recent Mobile Sports Report released by Adobe, watching sports online or on mobile devices is the primary driver of the continued worldwide growth in digital video consumption. Some of the key findings have been that sports video streams increased 640 per cent, year on year, compared to an overall growth of 440 per cent for all types of content. Secondly, sports events accounted for 37 per cent of all streams, compared to 32 per cent for news programs and 28 per cent for TV shows. And finally, one quarter of all sports digital viewing now happens on mobile devices, a 73 per cent year-over-year increase. And though tablets lead all forms of non-TV devices for video viewing, streams on smartphones and gaming consoles are also growing rapidly.

We need to be where the consumer is i.e., be it mobile, TV, online or a tablet at the same time.

Which are the other sports properties you look at tapping in the future?

We are looking at expanding with a mix of sports including NBA, UFC, TNA and more.
