Sony Six to broadcast IPL auction live

MUMBAI: The Indian Premiere League (IPL) player auction will be held on 16 February in Bengaluru. As of now there is no clarity on the number of players as the deadline for franchises to submit the original list has been deferred to 4 February 2015.

India discard Yuvraj Singh, former England skipper Kevin Pietersen, wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, South African cricketer Hashim Amla are amongst marquee players to go under hammer this auction.

Unlike last year, when the auction was a two-day event containing all players barring those retained by the teams, this auction will be shorter but will still be significant for a few franchises. Having released big-name players, Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore are likely to be the big spenders this time.

As per reports, Daredevils has the maximum purse available this time with Rs 400,000,000. Royal Challengers has Rs 210,000,000 in its kitty, having released Yuvraj who was the most expensive player last year with a bid of Rs 140,000,000. Though Yuvraj finished as the team’s second highest run-scorer, Royal Challengers were just above Daredevils with five wins.

England all-rounder Ravi Bopara, Australia’s Twenty20 captain Finch, India seamer Zaheer Khan fall in the Rs 10,000,000 bracket. Vijay opted for a base price of Rs 5,000,000.

  • India to host World T20 2016; England gets World Cup 2019

India to host World T20 2016; England gets World Cup 2019

MUMBAI: Just days before the World Cup 2015 is slated to begin, ICC senior executives met to take important calls on the upcoming tournament. The meeting was chaired by ICC chairman N Srinivasan in presence of ICC chief executive Dave Richardson and other members of the Board.

Players behaviour and safety, playing conditions for 2015 edition of World Cup and schedule of ICC events from 2015 – 2019 were the major points of discussion in the meeting.

The ICC Board reiterated its support for the umpires clamping down on poor player behaviour, particularly leading into and during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

The Board considered issues around player safety following the tragic death of Australia batsman Phillip Hughes during a first-class match, and was briefed on the ICC-supported research project to improve the safety of cricket helmets, which has recently resulted in a new British Safety Standard being introduced.

It was noted that helmet manufacturers have now introduced a number of new helmet models that comply with the updated British Standard, and that an increasing number of international players have chosen to wear the helmet models that complies with this new safety standard.

Whereas on playing conditions, the ICC Board roped in the use of a Super Over in the event of a tie in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 final. This now replicates the arrangements for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final and other recent ICC events where a winner will be determined on the day of the final (weather permitting), and a Super Over was the most credible way to separate the two sides.

The ICC Board also approved a change to the application of ICC Code of Conduct offences relating to slow over-rates in ICC events so that captains do not carry any prior minor over-rate offence ‘strikes’ or over-rate suspensions from other series into an ICC event.

This approval means all captains will enter the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 with no over-rate ‘strikes’ against their names, and they will only be suspended from playing in an ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 match if over-rate offences are committed during the event.

Any over-rate ‘strikes’ incurred prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will be carried forward to the first bilateral series after the event.

The entire scheduling of ICC event till 2019 was discussed in the meeting and the major events were distributed among various countries.

Ten Sports to bring MotoGP to India; introduce new racing league

MUMBAI: The avenue for non-cricket sports properties like kabaddi, tennis, wrestling, and football, which saw a great start last year is set to grow bigger. The newest entrant is the niche sport Moto Grand Prix popularly known as Moto GP.

According to sources, Ten Sports has inked a five year deal with the sports property. Previously, Moto GP was a non exclusive property shared by three sports networks; Star India, Neo Sports and Ten Sports. But with the new deal coming in place and the two partners reaching a fine print, Ten Sports has gained an exclusive deal with Moto GP beginning from 1 February 2015.

If multiple sources are to be believed, there will also be a set of new programming and races wrapped around it including studio produced shows to propel the sport’s popularity in India. What’s more, the network is also looking to foray into introducing a new racing league in the country.

When contacted, Ten Sports officials denied the development.

On the other hand, the network is in a celebratory mood with the success of another property-World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). “The response has been fantastic as we have reached out to a mass audience via Facebook, Twitter Google Hangouts etc. When India was playing against Australia in Oz and we declaring we were going live with RAW, we were trending much above India playing with Australia on Twitter,” says Ten Sports CEO Rajesh Sethi. Ten Sports had decided to go live with flagship properties like RAW and specials like Royal Rumble during the early morning slot at 6:30 am.

“We thought we were not going to do well but received more than 900 emails with regards to it. I am happy the way our ad revenues are shaping too,” adds Sethi.

The network is also looking at the prospect of airing WWE in regional languages. Besides, with the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and the network having the rights of Pakistan cricket, it is busy promoting the mega event in the neighbouring country and will be announcing its plans soon.

The campaign reflects the sentiment among the young India cricket fans and perfectly captures their mood as the Men in Blue prepare to fend off 13 other teams and defend their title with the war cry – ‘Won’t Give It Back’. It’s the fans’ rallying call to support Team India in their quest to give it their all Down Under in Australia and New Zealand.

Commenting on the creative execution for the campaign, Lowe Lintas + Partners’ national creative director Arun Iyer said, “We wanted to capture the aggressive attitude of the new Indian cricket team. They are team that gives it back. And given the fact that we are defending champions we felt won’t give it back was an interesting way to capture this attitude.”

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will be broadcast on Star Sports network. India kicks off its title defense on 15 February, when they face-off against arch-rivals Pakistan. The tournament will be broadcast in six languages (Hindi, English, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali). • Hope to see India and Australia in the finals but New Zealand could be the dark horse: Michael Kasprowicz

Hope to see India and Australia in the finals but New Zealand could be the dark horse: Michael Kasprowicz

As a right arm fast bowler, effective outfielder and a lower order batsman, Michael Scott Kasprowicz has had quite a successful career as a cricketer. His strong performances for Queensland earned him a Test debut against the West Indies in November 1996. He later on went to become a specialist of the reverse swing. Currently, Kasprowicz is a director at the Board of Cricket Australia. Ahead of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, the pacer talks about India and Australia’s team form and also picks his two teams for this year’s biggest sporting event.

    Excerpts…

With a disappointing performance from the Indian pace attack at the test series, what is the key to adapt to the Australian condition?

The length is the most important thing. When you’ve got extra bounce, length’s not important. And we have always told Australian bowlers that we want the ball to hit the top of the stump, which is the ideal length. On some grounds it’s going to be a bit fuller, while on others it’s going to be shorter.

What are your thoughts on the role of spinners and wrist spinners in particular on Australian grounds?

Definitely their role helps. It slows the game up as well.  So with the ball coming in nicely in proper conditions, you will find that the spins have a huge impact in limited overs cricket. So that’s going to be very interesting I think. Certainly with the teams from different parts of the world who are going to be there, only one of them is going to win in the end. I don’t think it’s going to be about spinners necessarily but it’s going to be about the best batsman and the most number of runs taken.

A lot of the teams don’t have wrist spinners. Do you think they have missed the bus?

It’s interesting, isn’t it?  In a group of 15 people you have to fit a lot of players in a particular team. We are very happy with the Australian side. There were plenty of players that were missed out. I suppose with leg spin it would be interesting but you know the wickets don’t turn certainly; not like a sub cotton wicket but you get bounce. I know since Shane Warne used to always love the particular bowling called the gabba, which is one of the bounciest wickets in Australia.

Looking purely at India’s batting strength, how do you see India’s chances at the World Cup?  Do you see them repeating the performance of 2011?

I think with some players who are in the squad , coming out of a fantastic test series in form is crucial. And I think being the current World Champions the confidence level is there anyway.  20-20 cricket formats introduced that confidence and changed the way batsman play today. Nothing is impossible now. Chasing those big hurdles is an easy task for India’s team.

You have played with Sachin Tendulkar. Do you see Virat Kohli too coming up?
Yes he is very talented. It was great to see him play at the series in Australia and really to watch the way he did it. He is such an amazing talent.  Most of all, I love watching him adapt his skills to suit the Australian conditions. But with a little bit extra bounce, it took him a little bit of time to get used to it.

But was it wise of him to take on the Australian bowlers off the field as with the verbal duel with Mitchell Johnson?

I will point something out. You often compete the hardest against the people you know. With T20, IPL and other international formats, the players know each other well now. Towards the end of the series a good bit of laughter ensured, which was great to watch.

Steven Smith performed well as a test captain. There are talks of him taking over maybe at the World Cup. So in case Michael Clarke does not get back on track with his fitness, do you wish to see Smith taking over?

I think Australia has taken a very good form and a good balance at this WC. I can probably imagine they will stay with what they’ve got. George Bailey, for example, has been a fantastic player and certainly given a role, he will turn it around. I know he is a good leader, which Smith showed at the Test as well. But I feel it’s great to have two strong potential leaders in a team.

But who would be your choice?

I am quite sure the Australian cricket selectors will choose the right person.

Do you think there is too much pressure by players on the fitness of Michael Clarke at this stage?

I think you have to give him a chance. He is a great player. I think it is very important to give him every opportunity and I think at the World Cup, experience is necessary, which is what Clarke brings with him.

In the test series we saw both the teams scoring approximately more than four runs per over. What do you foresee the score range at the WC?

I think with Twenty20 cricket, batsmen are not afraid of chasing anything down. We’ve seen something like 300 or 400 runs even chased down. I think those 100’s during the last ten over is pretty easy now. So over 300 runs is where I see it now maybe.

What are your guesses on who will who be the finalists?

It’s going to be very hard to predict the big two. I am hoping its Australia and India of course. But World Cups are always interesting as there is always a dark horse. There is always a side that will come out of nowhere and I think that’s going to be New Zealand.
