  • Govt. puts its weight behind AIFF to host FIFA U-17 World Cup

Govt. puts its weight behind AIFF to host FIFA U-17 World Cup

MUMBAI: FICCI’s ‘Goal 2015’, the third International Convention on Football Business, kicked off with All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Kushal Das, describing three monumental events — the strengthening of the I-League, launch of the Indian Super League and planning under way for India to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup – as “game changers” for Indian football.

Ministry of Youth Affairs sports director Vivek Narain said, “On its part, the Government of India pledged full support to supplement the efforts of AIFF in hosting the World Cup for which it has earmarked Rs 95 crore.”

Narain said that the Government was looking for more active participation from the private sector for beefing up the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), using the vehicle of CSR.

NSDF has been established for mobilising resources from non-government resources, including private/public sector and non-resident Indians for the promotion of sports and games in the country. The funds available under NSDF are mainly used towards supplementing government assistance to the elite sportspersons who are medal prospects at major international events, for meeting their specific coaching/training requirements by way of provision of scientific support and training within the country and abroad, purchase of equipment, participation in international competitions etc. The objectives of the fund also include construction of sports infrastructure, taking up research projects and development studies and promotion of international cooperation.

FICCI Sports Committee chairman Sanjiv Paul said that Indian football is ushering in a new dawn. The Indian Super League seemed to inject fresh energy into the system and the country is witnessing unearthing of talent like never before. FICCI, he said, salutes this new found fervour for sport in general and football in particular amongst fans whose passion is driving these to new heights.

He said that the corporate sector has shown a lot of confidence by investing incrementally year-on-year. The efforts are visible at the state and district level that has helped increase the number of participants and supporters of the sport within regions.

“As per our estimates, more than 20 lakh players play the game across the country. Thus lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs present in this room to reach out and connect,” he pointed out.

Head of Public Affairs, Premier League Tim Vine said, “There was huge potential for football to grow in India and his organisation was keen to assist in every aspect of the game. The Premier League was conducting a series of workshops on football across India on topics such as governance, youth development, stadium management and media relations, etc. It was crucial that the game develops from grassroots upwards.”

FICCI secretary general A Didar Singh added, “The export of sports goods from India is valued at Rs 1100 crore and the country is today counted among one of the largest football manufacturers and exporters in the world. It could well become the largest exporter with greater effort provided that there is a conducive environment available. ‘Invest India’ for attracting FDI and ‘Make in India’ for making India a global manufacturing hub provide ample opportunities for catapulting the sports goods industry, especially the football business, to another orbit.”

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president-in-exile N Srinivasan led India Cements’ board has approved the transfer of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a wholly-owned subsidiary Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited. A decision to this effect was taken at a board meeting of the company, held on 11 February.

“Pursuant to the decision of Board of Directors of India Cements, the company transferred the IPL franchise rights to its wholly-owned subsidiary Chennai Super Kings Cricketd,” Srinivasan told reporters after the meeting.

He also added, “The Board considered a proposal for reorganisation of Chennai Super Kings Cricket under which ownership of the franchise will be issued to the shareholders of India Cements, subject to necessary approvals.”

Srinivasan, was barred by the Supreme Court from contesting any polls of the board till he gave up ownership of the IPL team. Though he confirmed transfer of stakes, he did not specify who would be at the helm of Chennai Super Kings Cricket.

“This is the first step in slowly getting into a fully cement focussed company,” he asserted, declining to comment on how the new subsidiary would be capitalised.

Last month, a Supreme Court bench of Justice T S Thakur and Justice F M I Khalifulla had assailed the amendment in BCCI rules permitting cricket administrators like Srinivasan to have commercial interest by owing teams in IPL and Champions League and said it was bad on grounds of conflict of interest.

  • Star Sports’ new World Cup TVC takes pot shots at Pakistan’s consistent loss to India

Star Sports’ new World Cup TVC takes pot shots at Pakistan’s consistent loss to India

MUMBAI: While the world is gearing up for the soon to begin ICC Cricket World Cup, fans in India and Pakistan are an excited lot too as India clashes with its arch rivals on 15 February during their opening match. To add to the excitement, official broadcast network – Star Sports – has launched a TVC as part of its overall campaign titled #WontGiveItBack.

The 60 second TVC shows a young Pakistan cricket fan sporting the team colours waiting to celebrate the victory over India in the World Cup since 1992. The wait has been so long that he now has a son, who also repeats his father’s routine to no avail as India eventually defeats them. The comic element of the film revolves around the fans’ routine of getting the crackers out for celebration in every edition of the World Cup when India plays Pakistan, in anticipation of their win but only to shelf them back again in disappointment.

The communication brief for the TVC stated that India versus Pakistan in the World Cup is the biggest game on the cricket calendar. It also happens to be the first game for both the teams as they kick off their respective WC campaigns. Secondly, the brief was to ignite a sense of pride and passion amongst Indian cricket fans.

The statistical insight was based on the fact that India holds the bragging rights to this game. India and Pakistan have played each other in the World Cup five times and India has come out victorious each time.

The TVC is produced by Bubblewrap Films, directed by Suresh Triveni and produced by Ketaki Guhagarkar. The Star Sports team comprised Rohit Khanna, Venkataraman Mandalam, Juju Basu, Mustafa Rangwala, Vikas Dubey, Prathamesh Sapte, Atulya Parashar, Ajeet Mestry and Dayanand Bhoite.

The TVC so far has garnered 2,50,050+ views on YouTube. The highly anticipated match will be telecast live on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 3, Star Sports HD 1, Star Sports HD 3 and starsports.com. The coverage of the match will begin from 7:30 am.

  • Pro Kabaddi League season 2 pushed to July

Pro Kabaddi League season 2 pushed to July

MUMBAI: The Pro Kabaddi League was a surprise package last year wherein the sport managed to grab eyeballs on television and heavy presence of audience at the stadiums too.

While the first edition of the league was held from 26 July to 31 August 2014, League promoter Anand Mahindra had said on the day of the finale, “We are very happy with the response for the League and Kabaddi and so will be back as early as March 2015.”

However, now official sources have confirmed to Indiantelevision.com that the second edition of the League will not be kicked off in March but during the same window period as last year, i.e July to August 2015.

The reason for the shift in schedule is being attributed to the evident clash with this year’s biggest sporting spectacle, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

Official broadcaster of the World Cup, Star Sports is also the broadcast partner for the Pro Kabaddi League. With Star Sports having its hands completely tied up with the Cricket World Cup, the League’s second season will now only kick off in the July to August 2015 period.

Pro Kabaddi League was conceptualised by Mahindra and commentator Charu Sharma through their venture Mashal Sports. Sharma, known for his knowledge of the game, will also be seen playing the role of a cricket commentator during this edition of the World Cup.

The last maiden season of the league was won by Abhishek Bachchan owned Jaipur Pink Panthers, which defeated Ronnie Screwvala owned U Mumba. Sources also confirmed that the second edition will not see any additional franchises taking part.
