    SPNI to broadcast the Supercopa De Espana on Sony Six & Sony Six HD

    MUMBAI: The sports cluster of the Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) will broadcast the Supercopa De Espana or the Spanish Cup, to be played between Barcelona and Sevilla. The Spanish Cup will be aired LIVE and exclusive on Sony SIX and Sony SIX HD, on the 15th and 18th of August, at 1:30 am and 2:30 am respectively. The Supercopa de España will be a two-legged football match-up to be played between the champions of2015–16 LaLiga, Barcelona, and the runners-up of the 2015–16 Copa del Rey, Sevilla.

    Some of the big names who will battle it out on the field to take their team to victory are Messi, Suarez and Pique from Barcelona and Reyes and Coke from Seville. This is the first time, Sevilla will be playing Barcelona after the latter defeated the former in a thrilling 2-0 win in extra time at the Copa Del Ray finals in May this year. The previous season has been a shaky one for Sevilla and the Supercopa De Espana will be their platform to avenge their defeat against the Spanish giants and come back with a bang this upcoming season.

    The first leg of The Spanish Super Cup will take place on August 15 at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in Seville, followed by the second leg on August 18 at the Camp Nou in Barcelona.

    MUMBAI: On 8 August, several trade publications were splashed with headlines stating that Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) was close to acquiring the Subhash Chandra-owned Zee Networks’ sports network Ten Sports. The news was also carried by Times of India’s tabloid Mirror. The Economic Times from the same group too published a similar report, with no confirmation from either of the parties involved. SPNI sources had told ET that they do not comment on speculation. But the price mentioned in the news item for the transaction was Rs 2,000 crore.

    A member of the senior strategy team at Sony spoke candidly when he told us: “There is nothing to comment. These all are false speculations there is no basis to these reports.”

    Ten Sports CEO Rajesh Seth did not mince any words when he spoke with us. Said he: “In the company, we keep talking and exploring various opportunities that are right for the organisation but the discussion does not mean that it will go in that direction The news is pure speculation.”

    A Run for Rio was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in which 20000 school going children took part.

    The ‘Wall of Best Wishes’ has been put up at India Gate lawns by the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry where common people can post their Best Wishes to the Rio participants Indian athletes. Twitter handle #Khelo India @ India Sports can be used to change the background of icon of twitter account with the spirit of Rio.

    An Olympic exhibition has opened to continue till 21 August 2016 at different locations of NDMC and MCD areas. In these locations, giant size screens have been put so that people in large group can watch Olympics games as they happen.

    The official song for India for the Rio Olympics ‘Born a Champion’ voiced and written by Fakira (Ahran Choudhary) has been launched at the Olympic Carnival by Sports Minister Vijay Goel here.

    Based on the story of an athlete, the RAP track captures the undying spirit of a sports man, the essence of the fight an athlete goes through in his life to prove his talent to others, but more importantly to himself.

    A tribute by Bollywood to the Indian athletes, the track is composed by Aditya Dev – who composed the music for Bajirao Mastani – and cinematography by Vishal Seth, who is a well known fashion photographer and cinematographer. Akshay Kumar lent his support for the making of the song and video and is a non-commercial initiative.

    The song climaxes with #wewantgold, all Indian rooting for, hoping for, dreaming for, and waiting for the gold medals that Indian sportsmen would be winning at the games for the country.

    Communications Minister Manoj Sinha has unveiled the Commemorative Postage Stamps on Rio Olympic Games and said the unique initiative will motivate the Rio-bound Indian athletes.

    Issuing stamps on games of wrestling, badminton, shooting and boxing, the Minister said the Department of Posts had always issued special stamps on important occasions to rekindle the spirit of patriotism and for advancement of National Interest.

    Goel said in a statement that this is the first time in the history of Olympics that on the request of the Government of and Indian Olympic Association that the International Olympic Committee has agreed to provide Indian cuisine in the Olympics Village Games Kitchen. The will help players feel at home and is expected to bring out better performance.

    A sum of Rs one crore has been transferred to Indian Embassy in Brazil for buying any additional items for the Indian contingent.

    Goel said his officers were available at Rio as well as in Delhi to attend to the problems of athletes. The Indian Embassy in Brazil is providing all necessary support.

    This has been the first Olympics in which the Government has made efforts to connect the Olympics with the common man and youth so that there is an environment and fervor of Olympic Games in the country which will push the sports among youth which is good for the country in the long run, he said.

    Unprecedented efforts have been undertaken in preparations of Rio Olympics by the Ministry by launching special schemes, such as Target Olympic Podium through which customized training with 34 Foreign Coaches and foreign exposure was provided to all athletes qualifying for Rio. In addition, daily allowance of the athletes has been doubled to 100$, extra physio-therapists masseurs have been sent to Rio.

    Mental Trainers have been provided to athletes for getting a winning attitude. An amount of Rs.160 crore has been spent on preparations of the athletes for the Rio Olympics making an average of more than Rs. one crore on each athlete who has qualified.

    Athletes had been sent to Rio well in advance of around average 15 days so that they can acclimatize and feel comfortable unlike earlier Olympics where they were going just 2 to 4 days before the beginning of the events, the Minister said.

    Meanwhile, Indian-origin South African filmmaker Anant Singh has been newly elected to the International Olympic Committee.

    Singh was elected at the 129th Session ahead of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 where the election of eight new IOC Members was announced.

    Singh had been hand-picked by Nelson Mandela to make a film on his life, ‘Mandela’.

    Speaking from Rio de Janeiro, Singh said, “It is a huge honour for me to be elected at the 129th IOC Session, as an individual member, to serve on the IOC. I look forward to making a meaningful contribution to furthering the spirit of Olympism and the ideals of the Olympic Movement, especially on the African continent. I am humbled to be in the company of my friend and mentor, Sam Ramsamy who was re-elected to the IOC at the same session.”

    Other newly elected members are Nita Ambani (India); Sari Essayah (Finland); Ivo Ferriani (Italy); Luis Moreno (Colombia); Auvita Rapilla (Papua New Guinea); and Tricia Smith (Canada) and Karl Stoss (Austria).

    Star India bags India-Windies US T-20 series rights

    MUMBAI: Cricket fans and more specially T-20 fans can rejoice. They can watch the T-20 series to be played between India and the West Indies on 27-28 August 2016 in Florida in the US on Star India’s sports channels. The games are to be played following India’s ongoing Test series against West Indies.

    The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) yesterday awarded the broadcast rights to Star India which agreed to pay Rs 34.2 crore for the two international matches. BCCI took the decision following a tender, bidding and evaluation process. The reserve price for each match, according to media reports had been kept at Rs 11 crore.

    Said BCCI president Anurag Thakur in a BCCI press release: “I am pleased to announce that Star India will be the official broadcaster. It will ensure the BCCI is able to guarantee maximum exposure and further increase the visibility of this new initiative.”

    Added BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke:”Star India has been an excellent partner for the BCCI. They have a deep understanding of the game of cricket, and what it means to the nation. We are pleased to extend our association with them. This agreement also reflects our strategy to develop new markets and fan following.”

    MUMBAI: Cricket fans and more specially T-20 fans can rejoice. They can watch the T-20 series to be played between India and the West Indies on 27-28 August 2016 in Florida in the US on Star India’s sports channels.     NEW DELHI: In its highest ever contingent, India is sending a total of 119 sportspersons who have qualified for participation in Rio Olympics 2016 to be held from 5 to 21 August 2016.

    A total of 57 sportspersons qualified for participation in Beijing Olympics 2008 and 81 sportspersons qualified for participation in London Olympics 2012.

    Minister Vijay Goel told Parliament today that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has informed that sponsors already committed are Reliance Jio and Edelweiss Financial Services as the Principal Sponsors, Amul, Tata Salt and Herbalife as Associate Sponsor, Li Ning and SBJ as apparel sponsors.

    Preparation for Olympic Games is an ongoing process. Training and competitive exposure to sportspersons preparing for international sports events including Olympic Games are provided under the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs) and National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).

    (Two sportspersons – sprinter Dharambir Singh and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt – are being sponsored for the Rio Olympics by the Steel Authority of India Ltd. Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh conferred the SAIL logo and felicitated the atheletes recently. Minister of State for Steel Vishnu Deo Sai, Secretary Steel Ms. Aruna Sundararajan and SAIL Chairman P K Singh and senior officers of the Ministry were also present on the occasion.)

    The Youth Affairs & Sports Ministry does not maintain data about the sponsorship given by private sector and public sector companies directly to the sportspersons and sports bodies for preparation and training of the sportspersons for their participation in international event including Rio Olympics 2016.

    The Ministry has formulated a programme “Target Olympic Podium Scheme” (TOP Scheme) within the overall ambit of the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) with the objective of identifying and supporting potential medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

    An Elite Athletes Identification Committee has been set up with Ms. Anju Bobby George, renowned athlete as its chairperson, Pullella Gopichand and Ms. M C Mary Kom as members among others to evaluate and select potential medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games for support under the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme. Identified medal prospects are being provided financial assistance for their customized training at Institutes having world class facilities and other necessary support under Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme.

    Further, in order to enhance the number of participants in the next Tokyo Olympics, the Government has set up a Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) in Sports Authority of India.
