NBA targets 31 July as return of season

MUMBAI: NBA fans finally have reason to rejoice as NBA commissioner Adam Silver and the league office have intimated the board of governors about the new date, 31 July, for the season to return, according to Shams Charania of The Athletics.

During a meeting, Charania reports that the board of governors, and the league discussed four competition scenarios for resuming the season that includes 16 teams going directly to the playoffs, 20 teams participating in group/stage play or 22 teams competing to determine playoff seeding with a play-in tournament. This also includes holding a 72-game regular season with all 30 teams and a play-in tournament.

Recently, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Friday's Board of Governors meeting was not expected to arrive at a conclusion on a final play plan. On his official twitter account, he wrote, “As hard as owners and teams are pushing for proposals rooted in some level of self-interest, there's still a sense they'll give Silver the latitude to implement the plan that he lands on with the NBPA. Most expect that'll come inside the next week.”

    https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1266437666926661632

In fact, Hornets owner Michael Jordan advocated for players’ safety, Charania reports. According to Charania, given that the NBA is prioritizing health and safety first and foremost, a 30-team return is unlikely.

The league's plans also include holding a 24-team playoff in two hub cities with games to begin when things are back to normal.

  • Remote production and live sports

    Remote production and live sports

MUMBAI: As sporting events came to a standstill due to Covid2019, technology came to the rescue for broadcasters. Ensuring social distancing, channels have adapted to remote production swiftly. Though it's not a new trend, the pandemic has given it a boost.

In remote production, the PCR is located far from the actual location of the game, wherein a director, who is controlling it, decides which feed to take from the ones he is receiving from cameras positioned at the stadium. Besides stadium feed, the director also receives the commentators' feed who are being patched live from their home as well as the graphics team. The director assembles and mixes all the feed from different locations to get the final output.

Bodhitree Multimedia co-founder and director Mautik Tolia, who had a 12-year stint at Neo Sports Broadcast, says: "On a theoretical level, remote production is easy to happen, but on a practical level, it would face some challenges with respect to bandwidth and connectivity. To execute the whole thing seamlessly is quite tricky but will have to start making these experiments amid the ongoing crisis.”

He adds that it will cost 20-25 per cent of the traditional production of live sporting events.

Many international companies such as TVU Networks and Dalet Digital Media Systems are providing highly equipped, low-latency, long-term and good broadcast quality solutions.

TVU Networks VP – product management Matt McEwen says, “Even though sports are not back just yet, the production crews have already been using this technology to create live coverage from home with sports talk programmes. They are already becoming familiar with this technology and there is no doubt that this technology will continue to be used as live sports resume.”

In India, Star Sports and Sony Sports have indulged in remote production for non-live chat shows.

A source close to a leading sports broadcaster says, “Remote production for non-live chat shows is already going on. Our main concern right now is to keep viewers engaged and market whatever property we are able to create." However, he adds that the decision on remote production for live sports will only be taken when there is a clear idea from the various governments’ and sports federations' decision to open for the usual sporting calendar.

“Broadcasters are looking for an easy way to access the content; something which is accessible through the internet that even if the bandwidth is bad they should be able to work on it,” says Dalet Digital Media Systems regional sales manager Rahul Goyal.

McEwen explains that live remote production is already possible using commodity internet connections and cloud-based production tools.  This has not only significantly reduced the cost of production but has also made it more flexible with what can be achieved.

He further adds, “For instance, IP connectivity has made it possible to have live coverage from virtually anywhere…even someone’s home! Crews working on production don’t even need to be in the same location. Lower costs and increased flexibility should result in more event coverage which will please audiences.”

Echoing the same view, Goyal says, “Remote production had started before the Covid2019 crisis. When we talk about remote production, it’s mainly to use fresh video from different sources or acquiring various files from somewhere and working on editing and VPN platforms to get the final output.”

Well-versed in live sports production, Tolia explains that remote production works with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and has gained prominence in games like football. A technologically advanced camera tracks the ball and different players in the game. This is done when the computer is fed with the data of ball movement from the cameras placed at the stadium that sends the captured feed to PCR.

TVU Networks’ McEwen believes that eventually all sports events will benefit from it. In particular, niche sports and other events that were previously not covered live will benefited.

Marquee events such as Olympics 2020 and Euro Cup have either been cancelled or suspended by a year or indefinitely. Even if some sporting events take place across the globe, they are going to be closed doors. In-stadia fans create drama and fuel the enthusiasm of TV viewers and of course boost players’ morale.

McEwen says, “As we transition to IP and commodity internet connectivity, it is much easier to expand coverage to areas where it may have previously been too expensive to provide coverage. For instance, it may be possible to add live coverage of fans during a game even if they are not at the event itself. Low-cost, highly efficient, and robust encoders now exist that make this possible. It is also possible that fans themselves could utilise smart phones to contribute to a production as the camera and encoding technology on these devices have become so good, especially when combined with suitable transmission technology.”

  • Star Sports launches new show ‘Cricket Connected: Chats’

Star Sports launches new show ‘Cricket Connected: Chats’

MUMBAI: Star Sports has introduced a brand-new show ‘Cricket Connected: Chats’ that will help fans catch-up with their favourite cricket stars during the week.

In an extension to the Cricket Connected brand, the new series will see flagbearers of the sport delve further into how they fruitfully utilise their time during the lockdown and offer advice to cricketers on how to be mentally focused during Covid2019 times. The show will air on Star Sports 1 and Star Sports 1 Hindi from 13 May onwards.

‘Cricket Connected: Chats’ will kick-start with the ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma’s special interview on 13 May followed by the ‘God of Cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar and Team India captain Virat Kohli each featuring exclusively on May 14 – 15 May respectively.

In the first episode of the series, Rohit Sharma talks about how he misses bowling. He said, “Since I injured my finger, I’m unable to grip the ball and I can’t bowl the way I used to. Wankhede’s pitch doesn’t give me a chance to bowl, so I stay away from it. In Tests, I try to bowl because that gives bowlers a break. To help the team, I mentally prepare myself to bowl 10 overs in a Test match.”

In the second episode, Tendulkar doles out golden advice on how players can still use the lockdown to prepare themselves. He said, “I would tell all of them to recharge their batteries. They need to have a little time off as well. When you are playing every alternate day, it’s not so easy to stay on top of the game all the time. It is good to move away from cricket for a while, recharge your batteries. I’m seeing different kinds of training that players are doing on social media.”

“In addition to that, as far as batting and bowling are concerned, there are physical drills and preparing yourself mentally that one needs to do. They also need to visualise how they can rectify what wrong they did in the past and how they can repeat the good they did. There have been many champions who didn’t have the best of everything, but they made the best of everything they had, so right now, we are in that situation," Tendulkar added.

  • SPSN launches ‘The Blue Revolution’ to re-run historic 1985 cricket matches

SPSN launches ‘The Blue Revolution’ to re-run historic 1985 cricket matches

MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) will showcase the best moments from the historical 1985 B&H World Championship of cricket tournament that had the Indian cricket team donning the blue jersey, in the series ‘The Blue Revolution’.

The 12-part series revisits India’s landmark victory in the 1985 B&H World Championship of Cricket, the first major tournament India won in coloured clothing and established its dominance in cricket across the globe. The series launches from 4 May at 8.30 pm and will be aired on SONY SIX and SONY SIX HD channels.

SPSN dives into the historical archives to revisit the victorious campaign of the 1985 B&H World Championship of Cricket in ‘The Blue Revolution’ and will showcase how India marked its dominance in cricket, ultimately giving rise to the term ‘Men in Blue’.

Sony Pictures Networks India chief revenue officer, distribution and head – sports business Rajesh Kaul says: “The Blue Revolution covers one of the most iconic moments in our sporting history and commemorates the era where India established its supremacy in the world of Cricket. At that time our World Cup winning team had seen a dip in form, however, they answered all their critics as champions do – by winning the 1985 B&H World Championship of Cricket.”

“The celebrations that ensued with Ravi Shastri and the team in the car as well as on the ground are iconic visuals of our rich cricketing heritage and we are bringing back these memorable games for the Indian cricket fan,” Kaul adds.

As a part of the build-up to the marquee episodes and matches, SPSN has organised a series of live interactive chat sessions with some of the Indian cricket legends and heroes of the unbeaten class of ’85 – Ravi Shastri, Roger Binny, Madan Lal and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan.

The sessions will be hosted by Rajdeep Sardesai and Joy Bhattacharya. TV Today Network consulting editor Rajdeep Sardesai says, “I remember getting up at 5 am in the morning to watch the Indian cricket team perform at the B&H World Championship of Cricket in 1985. Winning the World Cup in 1983 was unexpected but we really proved that we are the best team in the world in 1985.”

“The Blue Revolution series is a must-watch for all for its historical and nostalgic value. I am really looking forward to reliving those moments with some of the heroes of the team who were a part of this landmark endeavour on the official Facebook page of Sony Sports,” says Sardesai.

The World Championship of Cricket was a ‘mini’ World Cup played between seven teams: India, Australia, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Before touching down in Australia in 1985, the Indian team had lost three series on the bounce and were one of the least favourites to win the tournament, even after the heroic 1983 World Cup finals win over West Indies.

Led by the astute Sunil Gavaskar, the Indian team donned the Blue Jersey for the first time and went on to beat all teams in the series and eventually winning the finals against arch-rivals Pakistan. Since then, only one colour has been associated with the Indian cricket team and this built the foundation for the ‘The Blue Revolution’.

  • Sony Sports’ digital miniseries to keep sports fans entertained

Sony Sports’ digital miniseries to keep sports fans entertained

MUMBAI: In the absence of live sporting events across the globe due to the Covid2019 pandemic, the Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) has come up with a new digital miniseries: ‘Sony Ten presents The Medal of Glory’, aimed at engaging sporting communities across the social media landscape.

“We felt this was the perfect time to bring Indians closer to India’s Olympic champions and get to know our athletes up close and personal through this show,” says Sony Pictures Sports Network head – marketing & on-air promotions Neville Bastawalla.

Bastawalla further says: “Given the environment, we needed to innovate within the guidelines and take into consideration that everyone is in lockdown in the safety of their homes.”

Sony Ten presents The Medal of Glory’ is hosted by Raman Bhanot – a well-renowned sports anchor, and presenter – who has also presented the previous five editions of the Olympics.

The Sony Sports programming team, along with Raman Bhanot, worked together to bring the miniseries to avid sports fans. “The mini-series comprises fifteen episodes of fifteen minutes each; Bhanot has already shot almost all the episodes on video call chats with these Olympians,” SPSN marketing head explains.

Bastawalla adds: “The sports enthusiast will see these medal winners talking about their road to glory, iconic moments from their sporting journey, candid discussions around the life amid lockdown and other light-hearted anecdotes during their conversation with Bhanot.”

The digital miniseries features iconic medal-winning athletes of India like Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar, Leander Paes, Karnam Malleshwari and Sakshi Malik, to name a few. And, in the later episodes, it will feature Yogeshwar Dutt, Vijay Kumar, Mahabali Satpal and Vijender Singh as well.

Besides this digital miniseries, the sports broadcaster has already launched Sony Ten Pit Stop and Sony Ten India Stay Fit wherein they have had footballers like Gaizka Mendieta, David James, Australian Cricketer David Warner, Indian woman cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues, UFC fighters like Holly Holm and NBA stars like Trae Young, Jamal Murray, and Kemba Walker just to name a few.

In an attempt to explore multiple other opportunities and concepts, Sony Sports has also rolled out a show called WWE Live Dhamaal, which has live chats with WWE Superstars wherein it has featured WWE champion Drew McIntyre.

“A large part of SPSN marketing efforts for this miniseries is directed on digital and social media by using major social media platforms in a big way; however, it will also be promoted on-air across the network channels,” says Bastawalla. “We plan to launch three episodes each week across five weeks. They will be available for the Sony Sports community across key platforms.”

Though the primary focus of coming up with this miniseries is to engage our sporting communities; “A few brands have expressed their interest in the series and we are evaluating these prospects,” adds the SPSN marketing head without revealing the names of interested brands.

It’s over a month now since the sporting events across the globe have been suspended, cancelled or postponed to future dates amid the rising cases of the pandemic around the world. Sony Sports is the official broadcaster of the majority of international sporting events including two marquee events – Olympics 2020 and Euro Cup 2020 – which were scheduled to happen later this year but now have been suspended for a year to curb the spread of the Covid2019.

On similar lines, Star Sports has also launched a non-live talk show purely based on cricket called Cricket Connected, wherein they bring current and former cricket stars across countries to talks about the gentlemen’s game and the future of people involved with it.

The sports broadcasters are trying to find an alternative to keep their viewers engaged and occupied with some or the other content in the absence of non-live sporting events. Moreover, they have also started re-running the historical archived matches of various sports on their sports channels.
