    Google ex-exec among Discovery’s new hires in digital biz

    MUMBAI: Discovery Communications has announced a series of senior executive hires and new roles as part of its transforming of international digital media business. 

    Francis Keeling, who is a digital music executive, is joining Discovery as the senior vice president (SVP), international digital.  Jay Trinidad, running Discovery Northern Asia, takes on the additional role of the managing director, digital ventures, and Eugene Huang has been appointed to the role of SVP, product and technology.  All three roles report directly to president international development and digital Michael Lang.

    Keeling, in his role as the SVP – international digital will be charged with creating new partnerships and business opportunities for Discovery to bring its content to consumers across every screen and service.  This includes an active role in Discovery’s OTT initiatives, including the recently announced digital video joint venture in Germany with market leader ProSieben.  Keeling will also help to develop and launch new digital products tailored to meet the demands of Discovery’s superfans across numerous content genres.  He will be based in London.

    Keeling was most recently the global head of licensing at Spotify where he defined and implemented a new licensing strategy for the world’s leading digital music service.  Prior to Spotify, Keeling spent ten years at Universal Music Group as the global head of digital, he managed the transition from physical music sales to new digital formats including digital downloads, streaming and subscriptions.

    Lang said, “Francis is an outstanding digital executive who helped transform the music industry when its business model was disrupted by technological change.  He also comes to us from Spotify, a company we respect tremendously, with a proven track record of serving digital consumer needs.  We’re all excited that Francis is bringing these experiences and strong digital and consumer insights to Discovery.”

    As managing director of Discovery’s new digital ventures group based in Los Angeles, Jay Trinidad will focus on expanding Discovery’s brands and entertainment business into digital growth areas globally.  Trinidad spent a decade at Google as one of their early hires, working across advertising, search, strategy, operations and products including Chrome, rising to head of consumer marketing for Asia Pacific.  Trinidad will report to Lang for his new digital role, while continuing to report to Arthur Bastings, president and managing director, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific with respect to his on-going Northern Asia responsibilities.

    Eugene Huang has joined Discovery as the new SVP product and technology where he will develop Discovery’s international products and services across multiple platforms. Huang comes to Discovery most recently from American Express, where he was VP strategy and planning, developing innovative payment systems and digital commerce opportunities.  Prior to Amex, Huang held several senior government roles, including White House Fellow (president George W. Bush’s administration) and chief technology officer, consumer financial protection bureau for the US department of treasury 

    (president Barack Obama’s administration).  He also served as secretary of technology for the state of Virginia (under governor Mark Warner).  Along with Keeling, he will be based in London.

    Lang said, “Eugene brings exceptional tech leadership to our business which will be incredibly valuable as we develop some significant OTT initiatives across Europe.  Lang continued, “In partnership with the digital, creative and local leaders across our global organization, this senior team will help drive the digital agenda as we accelerate the pace of investment and transformation for Discovery.  Being able to attract world-class digital executives like Francis, Jay and Eugene into our business says a lot about our ambition as well as the opportunity they see for Discovery’s content and brands across the world as digital product offerings.”

    Over the last year Discovery has accelerated its International digital activity significantly from its BAMTech Europe JV, double digit subscriber growth in its Eurosport Player streaming service, to the new OTT JV with ProSieben in Germany and the launch of Discovery and Eurosport channels with Amazon in the UK and most recently announced Eurosport on Amazon Germany.

    MUMBAI: CASBAA has announced that following five years’ service as the Association’s chief executive officer Christopher Slaughter is to step down, effective 31 December. Slaughter will continue as CEO through the remainder of the year while a search is carried out for his successor.

    “The Board deeply appreciates Chris’s stewardship of the Association over the past five years. He has spearheaded structural reform of the organisation, created new events, and delivered on CASBAA’s aim to represent, inform, and connect its membership. We are grateful for his service to the membership and the industry,” said CASBAA board chairman Joe Welch.

    “It has been a tremendous privilege to work so closely with some of the most inspiring leaders of Asia’s multi-channel TV industry, both on the Board and among CASBAA’s members. In addition, it has been an honour to serve alongside the passionate and dedicated staff in the Executive Office. My time at CASBAA has given me a unique perspective on what has been a transformational period in the industry,” said Slaughter. “I want to express my deep appreciation to the Board for this fantastic opportunity over the past five years.”

    Slaughter was appointed as the CEO of CASBAA in October 2012, and had previously served as Convention Director in 2004. Before joining CASBAA, Slaughter held leadership roles in global and regional production, research, and news organisations: APV, The Yankee Group, CNBC, & Asia Business News.

    MUMBAI: After a seven year term, Zee’s Hindi channels head of communication Usha Rachael Thomas has called it a day at the network. .

    A source close to the development informed Indiantelevision.com that Thomas put down her papers on 1 September.

    Thomas heads communication for Zee’s Hindi GEC, cinema, FTA and premium clusters including Zee TV, Zee Cinema SD & HD, &pictures SD and HD, Zee Classic, Zee Anmol Cinema, Zee Action, Zee Anmol and Zindagi.

    Usha joined Zee in 2010. Prior to Zee, she worked as a consultant at CMCG India Pvt ltd. Thomas also headed public relations for Star Plus, Star Pravah and Star Jalsha prior to that.

    Before taking the plunge into public relation, Usha was a journalist and worked with media organisations like HT cafe, DNA After Hrs and Indiantelevision.com.

    Thomas also initiated and executed #Zeeforall and made Zee first broadcaster to show content for the visually impaired and hearing viewers. The movie ‘Dangal’ was premiered with subtitles for those who cannot hear and audio description for those who cannot see on the Independence Day, 2017.

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN has announced the following changes in the leadership team portfolio.

    Saurabh Yagnik, will move into a newly created role of EVP – monetization strategy and consumer insights. In this role, Yagnik will lead the identification of organic and inorganic monetization opportunities in partnership with the revenue and channel heads, to increase SPN’s participation in the marketplace. He will also leverage consumer insights to identify and facilitate implementation of new business opportunities for the network. Yagnik moves into this new role from being SPN’s EVP and Business Head for the English cluster of channels, where he was heading AXN, Sony Pix, Sony Le Plex HD and Sony BBC Earth.

    Tushar Shah will take on the role of EVP – AXN, Sony PIX, Sony Le Plex HD, Sony BBC Earth and Sony Aath. Shah moves into this role from being SPN’s EVP & Business Head –Sony Aath.

    Both these roles will report into SPN CEO NP Singh.

    Yagnik has been with SPN for over four and a half years and Tushar has been with SPN for over eleven years. These moves are in line with SPN’s philosophy of providing exciting career opportunities to internal talent and the network’s focus on the future.

    Zee TV elevates Azmat Jagmag as marketing head

    MUMBAI: Zee TV has elevated its VP – marketing Azmat Jagmag, who has been a part of the company for a decade and half now, as the marketing head.

    Sources confirmed the news to Indiantelevision.com, and that the position was vacant since one-and-a-half years. Earlier, Sorbojeet Chatterjee was heading the marketing department as a senior VP.

    Jagmag started working with the Zee group in 2005 as a marketing executive where she was looking after the formulation of marketing plans for film premieres and building appointment viewership for slots such as Shanivaar Ki Raat Amitabh ke Saath (SKRAKS), The Showman Show and Bhakti KI Shakti.

    Later, she was promoted as the marketing manager to then as the AVP. In 2013, she was designated as the brand marketing head for Zee Anmol. Prior to this role, she was the VP – marketing for Zee and her profile included managing channel share, marketing planning, brand building, budget planning and optimisation.

    CNN International announces Nikhil Kumar as New Delhi bureau chief

    MUMBAI: CNN International has announced Nikhil Kumar as the New Delhi bureau chief. Based in the country’s capital, Kumar will be responsible for the strategic planning of the network’s multi-platform news coverage from India and the region.

    “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Nikhil Kumar as we reaffirm our deep commitment to India,” said CNN International SVP and managing editor Ellana Lee. “Nikhil brings with him a deep understanding of this dynamic and diverse region and his expertise will be invaluable in this critical leadership role as we continue to strengthen our editorial operations in the country,” Lee said.

    Kumar was most recently the South Asia bureau chief for Time magazine based in New Delhi. Before moving to India in early 2015 he was a senior editor based in New York, editing and managing Time’s international editions, as well as foreign coverage in Time’s U.S. edition. Before joining Time, Kumar was New York correspondent for both The Independent newspaper and the London Evening Standard.

    Kumar has reported on several key regional and global political, economic and social stories including the devastating Nepal earthquake in 2015, the global financial crisis, the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis and the Boston marathon bombings. He has also interviewed leaders from the region including the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, Afghanistan’s president Ashraf Ghani, Sri Lanka’s president Maithripala Sirisena and Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

    Kumar graduated with honors in philosophy from University College London. He starts his new position with CNN International in September.

    MUMBAI: Red FM has appointed Viacom18’s Ranjit Phatak as the national programming head.

    Phatak, who was leading the creative and strategic vision of MTV programming at Viacom, will now lead the programming for Red FM network based out of Mumbai. Phatak comes with an experience of more than 16 years in the programming industry. He has been the programming lead for some of the top shows like MTV Love School, MTV Bakra, Roadies season 7, Emotional Atyachaar, Big Switch among others.

    Commenting on this switch, Phatak said, “For me, this also acts as a platform of change, moving from a TV background to radio where I feel there is a huge potential for this media. As for contributing to Red FM’s programming, I plan to stick to the basics of Bajaate Raho and build from that.”

    With the new hire in the leadership team, Red FM COO Nisha Narayanan says, “Ranjit has had an illustrious career in the television industry.     MUMBAI: Adlabs Entertainment’s Kapil Bagla has resigned from his post as the whole-time director and CEO with the effect from 1 September.

    Bagla shall now be focusing on reducing the debt of the company by monetizing the non-core assets such as the hotel and the surplus land through Walkwater Properties Private Limited (WPPL) (the wholly owned subsidiary of the company) as a director of WPPL.

    The company informed the BSE that Bagla will be continuing on the board as a non executive director (against his previous designation as whole time director) of the company with effect from 1 September.

    The company has also appointed Dhimant Bakshi as chief revenue officer and Ashutosh Kale as chief operating officer and executive director of the company as joint chief executive officers and key managerial personnel w.e.f. 1 September, 2017 to spearhead the executive functions.

    Bakshi has over two decades of experience in the retail industry. He has also been awarded among Top 50 Most Talented Retail Professionals of India by Asia Retail Congress. He has been heading the sales, marketing, F&B and retail business of the company. Dhimant Bakshi has been associated with the company for the last five years. As the joint CEO of the company he shall be responsible for driving the revenues of the company to the next level, apart from regular executive functions.

    Kale has over two decades of experience in the safety and security largely serving the Indian Army. He has served as an instructor in the Indian Military Academy and as an Anti-Terrorism Expert. He was handpicked to lead a contingent of 1700 Indian troops in the United Nations wherein he was responsible for leading strategic, diplomatic, cultural, PR and humanitarian initiatives in the Horn Of Africa. Kale has also been associated with the company for the last five years. As the joint CEO of the company, he shall be responsible for the operations of the parks of the company and enhancing customer experience, apart from regular executive functions.

    Soniya Kulkarni, in addition to her creative head position has been tasked with the job of business development. In her newly minted role of Creative and business head, productions, India, she will lead the charge in winning new business while continuing to oversee the productions and creative teams.

    Deepali Handa has been promoted to Commercial Head, Productions, India. She continues to oversee BBC Worldwide India’s non-fiction production and production accounts as well as operational performance.

    Soniya and Deepali will continue to report to Myleeta Aga, SVP and GM, South & South East Asia.
