    MUMBAI: Sharing his views on the theme ‘India: Delivering the Dream’, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel) managing director and CEO Punit Goenka delivered a keynote at the 19th Wharton India Economic Forum (WIFE) on 21 February.

     

    Held at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Goenka spoke about the changed business environment in India with initiatives by the new government and the current state of the media and entertainment industry in India.

     

    He also discussed Zeel’s journey over the past 20 years and the opportunities and challenges he foresees over the next few years.

     

    Speaking on the media and entertainment industry in India, Goenka said that widespread technological advances in the ecosystem and the digital experience driven mainly by aspects like digitization of cable industry, has brought a new mindset to make business – quicker, targeted, transparent and collaborative.

     

    He believed that this industry is the “sunrise sector” for the nation’s economy. Proving its resilience to the world, the Indian M&E sector is on the cusp of a strong phase of growth.

     

    “With most industry firsts to our credit, we as a global entertainment conglomerate have always been at the crest of innovation and leadership. We take immense pride in the fact that, unlike other global media companies which have travelled to India to set up their operations, Zee has travelled against the flow and has successfully set up its presence across 169 countries, entertaining over 730 million viewers across the globe,” Goenka said.

     

    The other keynote speakers were Reliance Industries’ Hital Meswani, Abbott India’s Rehan A. Khan, Microsoft’s Sanket Akerker and Bank of India’s V.R. Iyer.

    MUMBAI: Eros International has appointed Ajit Thakur as the CEO of its new motion pictures production division – Trinity Pictures.

     

    It may be recalled that in December 2014 Indiantelevision.com first broke the news about the former Life OK and Channel V general manager Thakur quitting the network and wanting to start his own label by joining Eros International.

     

    Thakur has joined the leadership team at Eros and will lead Trinity Pictures’ endeavor to invest in developing intellectual property in-house.

     

    Eros International group CEO Jyoti Deshpande said that while its acquisition and co-production model is all about scale, portfolio and market share, the Trinity label will be all about quality, success rate and building franchises with lasting value, which perfectly complements its overall content strategy. “We are excited about taking a big creative initiative with Trinity and warmly welcome Ajit to join the Eros family to drive this initiative with his wealth of experience and successful track record. We are fortunate to have David Maisel, the founder of Marvel Studios on the board of Eros International plc and are hopeful of recreating some of that franchise magic for Trinity,” Deshpande said.

     

    Commenting on his new role, Thakur said that it had been a dream to build a franchise based motion picture label and in Eros, he has found a perfect home to his dreams. “I am happy to be a part of the Eros family, India’s biggest film studio and hoping to create at Trinity something meaningful and of lasting value,” he said.

    MUMBAI: StyleHaul, the multi-platform marketing solution for global fashion and beauty brands and the largest women’s lifestyle network on YouTube, has appointed FremantleMedia Group former senior vice president – digital Olivier Delfosse as the chief operations officer. Delfosse will work alongside StyleHaul president and CEO Stephanie Horbaczewski in the Los Angeles HQ. Both FremantleMedia and StyleHaul are owned by RTL Group.

     

    During his role at FremantleMedia, Delfosse drove global digital initiatives and implemented innovative strategic partnerships with YouTube as well as Facebook and Twitter amongst others. These are particularly important areas of expertise for StyleHaul as the company seeks to expand onto new platforms, anchored by its bench of more than 5,000 digital influencers and one billion views per month on YouTube.

     

    As StyleHaul’s COO, Delfosse will lead the alignment and prioritization of company investments, ensure operational excellence across each business unit, and create the strategic roadmap for the company’s expansion into international markets, with Asia and Brazil as priorities. Delfosse will also lead the partnership between StyleHaul and the companies within the RTL Group digital portfolio. Last year StyleHaul and FremantleMedia’s US digital studio Tiny Riot! launched the successful original YouTube series The Crew, the first in an unprecedented deal for StyleHaul and FremantleMedia to develop 10 original content series over the next two years.

    Paritosh Painter joins Reliance Broadcast as network creative director

    MUMBAI: Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd (RBNL) has appointed actor, writer, director, television and theatre personality Paritosh Painter as its network creative director.

     

    In his new role, Painter will be looking into all the overall creative conceptualization and creation of differentiated content at Reliance Broadcast TV and radio business – Big Magic & 92.7 BIGFM. He will report to RBNL CEO Tarun Katial.

     

    Katial said, “Paritosh and Big have been associated with each other for years since he has been a creative mastermind behind some of our iconic shows as Har Mushkil Ka Hal Akbar Birbal. I believe that Paritosh is one of the astute creative minds of today who has clear roadmap in evolving a character or a relationship with his unique story-telling.”

     

    “He is one of the best content developers of our industry today. Considering our long-term association and the fact that he has immense knowledge about several aspects of the media and the industry, we decided to consolidate his position in the network and rightfully use his expertise across our brands and properties,” Katial added.

    Having over 15 years of experience in the field of entertainment, Painter has directed over 23 plays in Hindi and English and has done 2500 shows across the globe. Besides this, he has scripted several Bollywood films like Dhamaal (2007), Paying Guest (2009) and All The Best: Fun Begins (2009). His repertoire also includes stand-up comedy, content development and producing shows on television.

    MUMBAI: It was in December 2014 when Indiantelevision.com broke the news of Star India EVP and Star Plus general manager Gaurav Banerjee getting an additional responsibility of its sister channel Life OK, after the position was left vacant when Life OK and Channel V head Ajit Thakur decided to move on to join Eros. 

     

    Now in a recent development, the network has roped in Star India business head – English cluster Kevin Vaz to head its youth general entertainment channel, Channel V.

     

    As per industry sources, Vaz has already taken charge of his new role about 10 days ago. 

     

    Channel V will be the tenth channel in Vaz’s kitty. 

     

    Vaz, who was Star India president ad sales became head (GM) of English channels (FX, Fox Crime, Star World, Star World HD, Star World Premiere HD, Star Movies, Star Movies Action) and Star Jalsha and Jalsha Movies in March 2013.

    MUMBAI: 2014 has been a year of wins for the universe of the young, MTV. To further establish itself in the space, the channel has roped in Shalini Sethi and Keegan Pinto as programming and creative heads respectively. 

     

    Sethi will be responsible for further building original content based on her understanding of media consumption habits of young people. Working closely with young producers and talent, she will strengthen existing franchises while parallelly building new properties. 

     

    Keegan, who has worked on the biggest brands in the country, will bring his edgy creative sense to drive the bite across all communication elements including brand messaging, show promotions and short format content for multi-screen consumption.

     

    Both will be reporting to MTV India EVP and business head Aditya Swamy. 

     

    Talking about the new additions to the team Swamy said that people are the biggest asset of his business and the channel continuously looks for talent that believe in the power of MTV and are also hungry to push the envelope and challenge the status quos. 

     

    “Shalini and Keegan have an infectious energy and are key drivers in taking MTV into its next phase in the India journey.  I am thrilled to have them as part of the part and I am excited about the madness that we will unleash together,” Swamy said. 

     

    Speaking on her new role, Sethi added, “Looking in from the outside, MTV is the benchmark for everything ‘cool’ when it comes to the youth. And now that I’m here, I can already feel the excitement that drives this brand. It is indeed a pleasure to be here at a time when the channel is adding some very interesting shows and also delving deeper into fiction. I’m looking forward to working with the great set of people that I’ve met here and hoping that I’ll be able to create some great content for an iconic brand like MTV.”

     

    Pinto said, “MTV is the first and last word on youth and the young at heart. It is a monument, a legacy, a bastion of pop-culture and music so much so that people tend to forget it’s an acronym and quote it as if it were a word. It is synonymous with innovation, passion and is known for reflecting the way the youth like to be and express themselves.”

     

    He further added, “To be working with people who have been instrumental in defining generations of young people and head the creative team is an extremely exciting idea for me. To add to a brand of this stature, a brand that I grew up with, a brand that enriched my imagination as a creative person, is a humbling honor.     Prior to joining MTV India, Sethi led programming at bindass. She began her career as a production assistant with Picture This Co and soon moved to AIM Television, a production house where she worked on TV shows such as Khubsurat and Indian Holiday. Moving from Delhi to Mumbai she worked on many projects such as Breakfast with Zee and Deepa Mehta’s movie Earth 1947. Post which she joined the Moving Picture Company.

     

    With more than a decade of experience, Pinto’s previous stints were with Lowe Lintas, Bates 141, Rediffusion Young & Rubicam, O&M and Colenso BBDO Auckland, New Zealand. His work has won him accolades in both the international and national circuits including the prestigious D&AD, One Show, Adfest, Cannes Lions, Abbys and Effies.

    MUMBAI: After a stint spanning two decades, Barkha Dutt is now stepping down from her post as NDTV group editor to set up her own multimedia content company and policy group.

     

    Dutt will continue as consulting editor for the news network and will continue as host of her two on-going shows namely The Buck Stops Here (daily) and We The People (weekly).

     

    In an email to its employees, a copy of which is with Indiantelevision.com, New Delhi Television founders Prannoy and Radhika Roy wrote, “She (Barkha) will also be available as always for analysis and inputs on big news events and stories. While her TV relationship with NDTV remains unchanged, in her new role she will be setting up her own multimedia content company and policy group. We have literally seen Barkha grow from a child to an adult professional and look forward to our close bonds only strengthening further as she embarks on this new venture.”

     

    Having made her name reporting the war in Kargil, Dutt became one of NDTV’s most prominent faces as it went from a content provider for Doordarshan in its early days to being a media conglomerate that it is today.

     

    Dutt was 23 years old when she joined NDTV as a young reporter cum producer. Having won several awards in her 20 year stint with the channel, Dutt has worn several hats like: journalist, anchor and editor.

    MUMBAI: Zee Khana Khazana, the 24-hour food channel, has appointed Srikant Malladi as head of programming.

     

    Formerly with Colosceum Media as non-fiction head, Malladi played a pivotal to make MasterChef India one of the most popular shows in the Indian TV industry.

     

    Zee Khana Khazana business head Amit Nair believes that the channel has been growing at an incredible momentum and it is time to take it to the next level. “We are honored to appoint Srikant Malladi as the head of programming for our channel. Srikant comes with a lot of valuable experience across the entertainment and media platform and we are happy to have him on-board. We are confident that he will help us take the brand to greater heights,” he said.

     

    Malladi comes with over 14 years of diverse media experience – web journalism, films (Bollywood and Hollywood) and television. In the last eight years he has focused and specialised in large format, prime time, non – fiction shows for a variety of Indian broadcasters.

     

    Malladi joined Miditech India in 2006 as associate creative director (non-fiction) for shows like Lead India (Star One), K for Kishore (Sony) and Acting Ki Funshala (Sab TV). Post that he joined Colosceum Media in 2007 as supervising producer and moved up the ladder to become head of development and eventually got appointed as the head of entertainment (non-fiction). In his seven year stint at Coloseum Media, he was part of  several mainstream non fictional shows like Covershot 2: Mission North East, Roadies X1, Jaanbaaz, MasterChef Junior, MasterChef India and MasterChef Season 4.

    Zindagi appoints Star Plus’ Bharti Sharma as programming head

    MUMBAI: It was in June 2014, when Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) launched a channel nationally, christened Zindagi, for progressive mindset and people who do not have a language barrier. With the best of content from across the border, the network had appointed a separate team for the channel.

     

    The first change in the team happened with the exit of the network’s marketing head for national channels Akash Chawla quitting and moving to Essel Vision Productions as business head. The team is further set for a change.

     

    Now it is learnt from a highly placed source that Vanita Jain, who wears the hat of the programming head, has already resigned from the post and relinquished her position last week. The channel has roped in former Star Plus associate creative producer Bharti Sharma in place of Jain.

     

    Sources tell Indiantelevision.com that Sharma has already joined Zindagi on 9 February, 2015 and will report to the channel’s business head Priyanka Datta.

     

    Sharma was part of the programming fiction team at Star and used to report to Star Plus’ fiction programming head Danish Khan. She was involved creatively in projects like Mahabharat. Her last day at Star was on 6 February, 2015.
