As of May 2024, India has solidified its position as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, boasting a valuation of $349.67 billion. With over 1.25 lakh startups and 110 unicorns, the country has emerged as a global leader in innovation, particularly in sectors such as fintech, healthcare, and technology.

According to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Indian startups are projected to contribute an additional $1 trillion to the nation’s economy by 2029-30. The CII further anticipates the emergence of 300 new unicorns between 2024 and 2035, underscoring the sector’s significant potential for growth and its role in shaping India’s economic future.

Initiatives like Startup India and Atmanirbhar Bharat have played a pivotal role in propelling India to the forefront of global innovation, creating jobs, driving economic growth, and earning international recognition.

Audiences can witness the event live on www.abpLive.com on 17 December from 11 AM.

  • Sony’s Ravi Ahuja, Gaurav Banerjee and the art of winning

Sony’s Ravi Ahuja, Gaurav Banerjee and the art of winning

MUMBAI: That Sony Pictures Networks (SPN) president & chief operating officer Ravi Ahuja would come a-visiting Mumbai  and the broadcast major’s Malad office was known to those in the trade because of a story that broke in the media. But what is not known to most is what transpired during the dapper executive’s whistle stop tour .

GB, Ravi Ahuja and Manu Wadhwa

One of the activities conducted was a town hall, in which he and the SPN  India managing director & CEO Guarav Banerjee  (GB)  sat down with SPN India  chief human resources officer Manu Wadhwa for a fireside chat. The topic of discussion: Sony’s content first approach and SPN India’s pivotal role in SPN’s global strategy.

The key message GB sent out was that SPNI is a content-focused company with a goal to create hits that resonate with its audience.

And Ahuja had only one major message to give out: “Exceed expectations, take on new challenges, and build your skills and network – that’s the path to leadership!”

With that kind of a mandate, the rest of the  GECs and sports channels had better watch out. For not only does GB have youth on his side, he also has a point to prove. Which he is known to do. Whilst, SPNI has been a profitable venture in India, it has lacked leadership in fiction.

The townhall meet during the fireside chat

Its non-fiction shows like Shark Tank India, KBC, Indian Idol have set new benchmarks with targeted audiences. But what has been missing is top rung family dramas, telenovellas, and thriller shows which have gathered viewers time and mindspace. Something the creative teams under GB have been working on silently and stealthily.

Expect some real action in this space, especially when leaders at rivals such as Colors and Star Plus are absorbed with the merger and Zee is just about gearing up with its new slate of productions.

  • NT Awards & Summit 2024 witness a great turnout

NT Awards & Summit 2024 witness a great turnout

MUMBAI: Some of the most illustrious  news TV industry professionals from rival channels  turned out at the Holiday Inn in Mayurvihar, Delhi on the evening of 14 December 2024 to attend Indiantelevision.com’s NT Awards 2024,  in its seventeenth edition.

The awards were preceded by the NT Summit which featured two panel discussions relating to how multiscreen viewing is  impacting journalists and editors and the second focused on technological challenges and solutions. The room was filled to capacity.

Moderated by Indiantelevision.com founder, chairman & editor in chief,  the panel had some wonderful insights being shared by  NDTV senior managing editor Vaishali Sood, Times Network senior executive editor  Madhavdas Gopalakrishnan, TV9 Bharatvarsh senior executive editor Nishant Chaturvedi, ABP News vice-president news & programming & senior anchor Chitra Tripathi, Collective Newsroom director of journalism and co-founder Mukesh Sharma and Zee News associate executive producer Anant Tyagi.

    First panel

The  panelists agreed that the arrival of multiscreen  viewing and the explosion in social media consumption has led to newsrooms being extra vigilant on how they source news leads from social media posts and how they ensure that the news they provide reaches out to different audience cohorts on different social media platforms and in formats that appeal to the viewers. This is especially in an era where trolling, fake news, lobbying and propaganda proliferation have become rampant  on social media.

The second session talked about integrated newsrooms, how artificial intelligence is going to impact news journalism standards both positively and negatively, and the new tools available to reporters on the field, to editors and anchors in the studio and to technicians and graphics producer to enhance the viewing experience for watchers at home. The panellists included India.com chief product & technology officer  Vivek Mishra, TV9 chief growth officer -broadcast & digital TV9 Network,  Times Network vice-president – technical & broadcast  operations Anil Mittal with the session being chaired by BCG partner Payal Mehta.

    2nd panel

TVU general manger Subodh Aggarwal  made a presentation about how news channels can Streamline media production with cloud based solutions.

The NT Awards was a moment of celebration for editors, producers, graphics and OAP teams reporters, anchors of prime time shows as the room filled to the capacity exploded with applause with the announcement of the nominees and winners names. The awards  recognised  good work in regional languages as well as in Hindi and in English.

“The news industry is going through an evolution thanks to the increasing consumption of news on digital  and streaming outlets,“ said Indian Television Dot Com director Mishaal Wanvari. “It has responded well to the challenges and has started developing different programming formats  catering to different targeted audiences. It has also started innovating by adopting technology which improves the viewer experience. We see a very bright future for the news TV industry.”

“The news TV industry has responded warmly to our initiative to recognise the best in class from the entries with the help of an outstanding jury from various walks of life,” said Indian Television Dot  Com chief business officer Soumitra Sahu. “Thanks to the enthusiasm of the news TV professionals and our partners, the NT Awards and Summit were a resounding success.”

Sony Sports to go regional with Hockey India League telecast deal

MUMBAI: The Hockey India League (HIL) has got an additional live telecast partner for the next three years  – the Sony Sports Network (SSN). The league has signed a contract with the broadcast network.  Mid-last week, DD had announced that it was coming on board for the whole tournament’s telecast.

What’s special about the SSN deal is that it will be airing the matches with Telugu and Tamil commentary as well as Hindi and English in a bid to broad base the appeal of the sport. The tournament can be viewed on Sony Sports Ten 1 (English), Sony Sports Ten 3 (Hindi), and Sony Sports Ten 4 (Tamil and Telugu) channels in both standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD). The league, featuring domestic and international players, is to take place in Ranchi and Rourkela for both  men and women and will be flagged off on 28 December.

Said Sony Pictures Networks India chief revenue officer & head sports business Rajesh Kaul : “Hockey has gained significant popularity in India with the Indian team’s success in consecutive Olympics contributing to the resurgence. At SSN, we have always been committed to serving Indian fans with a diverse sports portfolio. The inclusion of one of the world’s premier franchise-based hockey leagues will undoubtedly bring fans closer to the game. We see our partnership with it as a key step toward establishing ourselves as the home of hockey, just as we have done with other major sports in our portfolio.”

Highlighted  HIL governing committee chairperson Dilip Tirkey: “Sony Sports’ expansive coverage across multiple channels and languages will ensure that fans from all corners of the country can enjoy the league. This season is poised to be bigger, better, bolder, and we are confident that Sony’s unmatched telecast capabilities will help take the excitement of Indian hockey to new heights.”

Added HIL governing committee member Bhola Nath Singh: “Our focus has always been on promoting hockey to a wider audience, and this partnership with SSN allows us to do just that. With their multilingual telecast plan, we are making the sport accessible to a larger audience, bringing them closer to the game. We believe this season will set a new benchmark in terms of viewership and fan engagement.”
