  • Tandon out of LS TV, reportedly 5th exit in last few months

Tandon out of LS TV, reportedly 5th exit in last few months

MUMBAI: The executive director (programmes) of Lok Sabha Television, Sudhir Tandon, has been removed from the post. He is reportedly the fifth person in the last few months to leave or ‘be asked to leave’ the yet-to-find-its-feet channel, which was launched last year.

Tandon, who retired from the post of deputy director general and station director of the Delhi Kendra of Doordarshan last August after a career spanning 35 years, had been with Lok Sabha TV from the time it was conceived in November 2005 and steered its launch in mid-2006.
Vartika Nanda, executive producer of the channel, has been asked by Bhaskar Ghose, chief executive, Lok Sabha TV, to hold charge until further orders.

While no reasons have been given for his removal, it is learnt that Tandon had been asked some months earlier to ‘show performance’.

Tandon tells Indiantelevision.com that he did not know what the reasons for his removal were, and that he had never been told anything. Said Tandon: “Maybe they (the top mandarins at Prasar Bharati) felt that Mr Ghosh and I are two different personalities who did not gel.”

Tandon said: “Mine is the fifth case over the past six months in which someone has been asked to go, or conditions created in which s/he could not work, so they left.”

Asked about being told to show performance, Tandon’s reaction was: “What performance should I show? The Lok Sabha TV is what it is today because of me.” Besides, he says he had never been asked to give any appraisal in writing about his performance.

Tandon added: “Do remember that it was on the basis of my design and programming that Lok Sabha TV has so much of variety, and that Speaker Somnath Chatterjee himself had said that he is proud of this unique channel, in terms of Parliament coverage.”

Ghosh, when contacted, said: “At that time what he was doing was not really what the channel needed.” Asked whether this was the case right from the beginning, since Tandon had been there since inception, Ghosh said he would not discuss these issues.

Asked whether the manner of removal was in keeping with government rules, Ghosh refused to comment. When pressed on the matter, Ghosh firmly said: “I am not going to comment on this.”

Meanwhile, the channel has succeeded in attracting commercial sponsorships from a few advertisers commencing from the winter session in November.

The channel was formally launched with the monsoon session of the Lok Sabha in mid-July, though it had a trial run in May in the extended budget session which had discussed the office of profit controversy.

In a recent meet on Legislature and the Media, Chatterjee had mooted a recommendation that the meetings of the 24 Ministry-linked Standing Committees be thrown open to the media. At present, these are not open to the media, but the reports are laid in the tables of both Houses of Parliament. It is understood that he has proposed that these be thrown open initially to LS TV.

Though there were initial plans to bring both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha under its ambit, the plan was abandoned after the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, rejected the idea after consulting members of the upper house.

Thus, while LS TV functions as a 24-hour satellite channel, the Rajya Sabha is covered in a 20-km radius through a low power transmitter by Doordarshan during the session periods only.

The LS TV is one of the few channels in the world owned by the Parliament of the country. While the British Broadcast Corporation manages the Parliament Channel in the United Kingdom, similar channels in the United States and in Canada are managed by organisations of cable operators.

  • Mobile Vas services could touch Rs 45.6 billion in 2007: study

Mobile Vas services could touch Rs 45.6 billion in 2007: study

MUMBAI: The mobile value added services (Mobile Vas or MVas) industry could be worth nearly Rs 45.6 billion by the end of 2007, from its current size of Rs 28.5 billion.

These findings are a part of the Mobile Value Added Services Report, jointly prepared by the Internet And Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International.

A break up of the total market size of Rs 28.5 billion reveals that P2P (person to person) SMS or text messaging, continues to dominate the industry with Rs 11.4 billion, followed by ringtones, including caller ring back tones (CRBT) at Rs 10.26 billion; Person to Application (P2A) and Application to Person (A2P) at Rs 4.28 billion; games and data at Rs 1.71 billion and others (MMS etc) at Rs 860 million.

The P2P SMS revenue is accrued completely to the telecom operators. The remaining MVas revenues are distributed among content owners, developers and the telecom operators on a revenue sharing basis.

In the case of MVas (except P2P SMS) the revenue sharing arrangement is heavily in favour of telecom operators. This model is significantly different from more developed markets such as China where typically the operators are entitled to 20-30 per cent only. In the case of enterprise solution services, the revenue share arrangement between operator and short code owner is typically 70 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.

IAMAI president Dr Subho Ray says, “This is the first attempt at a market estimate for the industry and we are hopeful that government and industry will now look at the MVas industry with the attention that is due to it.”

He adds that for the market to grow and come out with innovative solutions three issues must be set right at the outset: revenue sharing and schedule of payments which is currently heavily in favour of telecom operators; stable and long term enabling policies by the government; and intra industry issues such as intellectual property rights.

  • Iraq orders closure of TV station office

Iraq orders closure of TV station office

MUMBAI: The Iraqi government has ordered the closure of the Baghdad office of a Dubai-based television station.

That is because the newscaster wore black mourning clothes while reporting on the hanging of Saddham Hussein.

A spokesman for the interior ministry was quoted in media reports saying that the Al-Sharqiya station, owned by a former chief of radio and television for Hussein, had incited violence and hatred in its coverage and had ignored warnings to stop.

Brigadier Abdul-Karim Khalaf, the spokesman, said that the order was issued after an allegedly false report by the news channel about the abduction of three Sunni Arab female students from a university.
Reports add that the order also followed criticism of the tone of Al-Sharqiya’s coverage of Saturday’s execution, which struck some as sympathetic to the ousted dictator.

In contrast to state-run television reports that described Saddam as a ‘tyrant’ and ‘criminal,’ a newscaster on Al-Sharqiya – which means ‘`The Eastern One’ – referred to him as ‘president’.

  • CNN-IBN celebrates the few who made a difference

CNN-IBN celebrates the few who made a difference

MUMBAI: As part of 60 years of Indian Independence celebrations, CNN-IBN is instituting an annual award CNN-IBN Indian of the Year. This will recognise the Indians whose contribution to the country in 2006 has strengthened the social foundation and helped build brand India in the process. The objective is to create the highest, non-governmental, civilian award conferred on an individual. Additionally, it will provide both a national and international platform to recognise, showcase and revere Indian achievements across different walks of life.

The awards will salute the best and the most dynamic Indian icons across six main categories: Politics, business, entertainment, sports, public service and NRI. Votes from the public and the electoral college, both holding equal weightage, will then decide the most superlative candidate to be the Indian of the Year!

CNN-IBN and IBN 7 editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai said, “We at CNN-IBN feel that many Indians and their accomplishments often go unnoticed and so we took it upon ourselves to create an award that would do just the contrary. The CNN-IBN Indian of the Year award will not only recognise, but also felicitate such achievers. The sheer credibility of the channel as well as the involvement of great personalities in the thorough selection process will lend immense authority to this title.”

CNN-IBN and IBN 7 national sales head Sanjay Dua says, “CNN-IBN Indian of the Year is a property that I am confident brands will find this platform very attractive and lucrative. They will find a sense of pride in being associated with such a prestigious title as it represents Indian achievements across various disciplines, and takes it to an international level”.

The Judiciary council in concurrence with the TV 18 Editorial Group will undertake the preliminary step of generating a list of prospective nominees for each category. The Council is an elite club of five Padma awardees: Padma Shri Geet Sethi, six times World’s Billards Champion; Padma Vibhushan Soli Sorabjee, former Attorney General of India; Padma Bhushan Nandan Nilekani, CEO of Infosys Technologies; Padma Bhushan Deepak Parekh, Chairman of HDFC and Padma Shri Kiran Bedi, a Magsaysay award recipient.

Electing winners for each group will be a three-tier process involving the Judiciary Council, the Electoral College and the citizens of India. The Electoral College, composed of 250 eminent citizens, each recognised in their respective fields, will vote for their chosen aspirant(s). The process of Vox Populi will be conducted simultaneously, through two means: ibnlive.com – for online casting of the citizen’s franchise and 2622 – voting through people’s mobile phones. Both, the Electoral College and the Indian public will be assigned 50 per cent of the vote weightage in determining winners from within every category.

The Indian of the Year besides being bestowed with this exalted title will also receive a trophy provided by Swarovski CCB at an event held in Delhi on 6 February.
