  • Cartoon Network goes ‘mobile’ in Hong Kong













    MUMBAI: In an effort to develop its presence in the digital landscape, Turner Broadcasting System has teamed up with Hong Kong-based mobile operator CSL to launch a 24-hour mobile TV channel in Hong Kong. The content will be available on CSL‘s 1O1O and one2free brands.


    CSL chief marketing officer Aenil Premji says, “Hong Kong has the highest penetration of mobile phones in Asia and it only makes sense for us to lead the way in providing mobile TV services here.”





    The mobile channel will be commercial-free and feature popular titles including Kids Next Door, Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Camp Lazlo, Dexter‘s Laboratory and Foster‘s Home for Imaginary Friends.


    “The partnership will allow viewers to be able to experience Cartoon Network‘s content at their convenience. The channel will be offered through CSL‘s ‘studio-on-demand‘ service,” adds Turner International APac vice president (wireless

  • CN to host ‘Toon Cricket’ in Hyderabad & Mumbai













    NEW DELHI: Kids entertainment channel Cartoon Network has announced that its cricket match, ‘Toon cricket – the battle for the Omnitrix’ will be played on 15 February in Hyderabad. The event will be held in Mumbai on 22 February.





    Says Turner International India deputy general manager and vice president– entertainment South Asia Monica Tata, “Instituted in 1999, Toon Cricket has successfully managed to create a combination of cartoons and cricket, a winning formula for Indian kids and adults. Now, the new ‘Toon cricket -the battle for the Omnitrix’ is ready once again to be the ultimate sporting extravaganza for kids.”


    The two teams that will be playing toon cricket this year are Bentastic and Maximojo. The match will have some of the network‘s popular cartoons like superhero Ben Tennyson from Ben 10, the evil Mojo Jojo, and the Powerpuff Girls among others.


    The match will also have an inaugural ceremony with a sound and laser show and a live-performance by the pop band ‘Aasma‘.


    Meanwhile, the channel will allow kids with the opportunity to play the toon cricket game on their mobiles thereby giving them a chance to win invitations to the match.

  • John Hardie to lead Jetix as CEO













    MUMBAI: Disney Channel‘s John Hardie, who until now was executive VP and managing director of Disney channels Europe, Middle East and Africa, has now been tapped to head Jetix Europe as the chief executive officer.


    Hardie will replace Paul Taylor with immediate effect and will continue to retain his present post as executive VP and managing director.





    Jetix Europe chairman-supervisory board Andy Bird said, ” Taylor has done a good job in his four years tenure and we wish him the best for his future.”


    It is pertinent to note that the change comes after Disney’s announcement in December that it intends to up its stake in Jetix Europe from 75 per cent to 100 per cent.

  • Dentsu acquires US toy brand Chub City













    MUMBAI: Global marketing and communications organisation Dentsu has entered into an agreement to acquire US toy brand Chub City.


    This is a line of street-savvy figural characters and vehicles originally created and currently marketed by Jada Toys. The announcement was made by Dentsu director, media services/tv division Yoshio Takada and Dentsu subsidiary DCI Los Angeles (DCI-LA) senior VP Yuma Sakata.





    Chub City will be developed for an animated television series by Dentsu in conjunction with DCI-LA. Mitsuharu Inoue will serve as creative director. Inoue is the producer of the hit animated series, Bakugan Battle Brawlers, a Japanese animated series airing on Cartoon Network which is based upon a toy line.


    Also planned for Chub City is an extensive new licensing program. Dentsu will own the intellectual property and will manage ongoing interests in the brand with DCI-LA.


    Takada said, “This acquisition is an ideal fit for our strategy with DCI- LA, which is to create animation for a global market by working with intellectual properties and development partners in North America while designing characters and animating through studios in Japan.”


    Sakata added, “The established character personalities and car customization aspects of Chub City have set-up a great story, and we are very excited to have someone of Mr. Inoue‘s caliber joining the team at the outset, to conceptualize an ongoing TV series while also growing the toy opportunities in an organic way.”


    The Chub City crew of characters and their distinctive chubbed vehicles can now be found in 12 global retailers reaching 11,000 locations worldwide. In two years, the brand generated over $20 million in retail sales.


    The Chub City brand was first created by Jada Toys to appeal to an aspirational demographic – kids who are inspired by music, art, and the car culture, but who are not yet ready to drive. The highly stylized and slightly edgy characters spend their time tricking out their dream cars, skateboarding, playing basketball, creating art and rapping in Chub City.


    The toys launched in 2005. Jada Toys president May Li says, “Our Chub City line has become a favorite for boys around the world. Our radio- controlled vehicles continue to be the top-seller in its category at retail, so there is clearly a demand for more from Chub City. Dentsu and DCI-LA, with its extensive development, production and distribution capabilities, will be able to take the property to the next level, and will be the best new home for this property.”

  • Nick unveils nominations for Kids’ Choice Awards













    MUMBAI: Kids entertainment channel Nickelodeon has unveiled the nomination list for the 22nd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA) across 18 categories. The awards will be telecast live on 28 March at 9.30 pm.


    Making the grade again with kids, five-time Kids’ Choice winners Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler and Will Smith have all nabbed nominations for favorite movie actor – Carrey for Yes Man, Sandler for Bedtime Stories and Smith for Hancock. Carrey is also up for favorite voice from an animated movie (Horton in Horton Hears a Who).


    Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jennifer Aniston has got her seventh KCA nomination with Marley & Me while current Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway has bagged her first for Get Smart.


    Former KCA hosts Jack Black and Ben Stiller are back with nominations in favorite voice from an animated movie category for Po in Kung Fu Panda and Alex in Madagascar:Escape 2 Africa respectively and their flicks are duking it out with the likes of Bolt and Wall-e.





    Meanwhile, The Dark Knight and Iron Man are fighting it out with Bedtime Stories and High School Musical 3: Senior Year for favorite movie.


    Miley Cyrus, who took home two awards last year, has not only picked up a pair of nominations for favorite female singer and favorite voice in an animated movie (Penny in Bolt), but her Hannah Montana has also grabbed one nomination for favorite TV show.


    Miranda Cosgrove has clinched a nomination for favorite TV actress while Nat Wolff and Jason Lee have received nominations for favorite TV actor. Last year’s favorite reality show, American Idol, has got yet anothet nomination while five-time favorite cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants has absorbed nominations one more time to square off again against former Blimp winning animated family The Simpsons.


    Last year’s favorite musical group The Jonas Brothers is contenders in the category once more competing against Linkin Park and KCA newcomers Pussycat Dolls and Daughtry. Beyonce, who grabbed a pair of KCAs in 2007 (favorite female singer and song) has got dual nominations (Single Ladies). Chris Brown, who seized a KCA prize last year, is up again for favorite male singer.

  • CBeebies gets ‘In The Night Garden’ back













    MUMBAI: CBeebies has announced that 20 new episodes of the children‘s television show In The Night Garden are coming to it and the BBC HD channel.


    Starting today, a new episode will transmit daily at 6 pm from Monday-Friday for 20 episodes, making four weeks of Night Garden fun as part of CBeebies‘ The Bedtime Hour, as well as a simulcast on BBC HD.





    The show is best described as a modern televisual interpretation of a nursery rhyme picture book with loveable characters inhabiting a magical place that exists between waking and sleeping in a child‘s imagination.


    Filmed in a real woodland setting, the show is specially created for the under-fours, exploring the dreaming time between waking and sleeping.


    Reached by following a magical little blue star, the Night Garden is a warm and affectionate world which is home to a comical and diverse community of toys, living happily together.


    The series is narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi.


    The show launched two years ago and has won the Best Pre-School Live Action Children‘s Bafta Award for two consecutive years, in 2007 and 2008. In The Night Garden has also gone global with more than 29 countries from Australia to Poland and Canada to Holland now screening the show.


    These new 20 episodes will take the series total to 100, ensuring the show will live on CBeebies for many years to come.


    CBeebies controller Michael Carrington says, “In The Night Garden is our top rating show and it has taken its place in the heart of our schedule and the hearts of our viewers. Wherever I go, parents talk about the show with fondness and enthusiasm, so I‘m delighted that we have 20 new episodes to share with our young viewers and their families.”

  • Excel brings ‘Sleeping Beauty’ on home video













    MUMBAI: Excel Home Videos is set to release the 50th anniversary edition of Walt Disney’s classic fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, on DVD and VCD.


    The bonus features in the package include: ‘never-before-seen expanded version of the film’, ‘never-before-seen alternate opening’, along with ‘all-new games and activities’.





    Sleeping Beauty has George Brun‘s orchestral score, which was nominated for an Academy Award, blended with famous themes from 1890 Sleeping Beauty ballet by Tchaikovsky.


    The fairy tale is the 16th animated feature from the Walt Disney Studios, adapted from the story with the same name by Charles Perrault.

  • Breakthrough begins work on new ‘Dudley’ series













    MUMBAI: Breakthrough Films & Television has commenced operations on the development of a new children‘s series starring Dudley the Dragon.


    Based on the company‘s children show The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon, the new animation will be crafted into a CGI series and will see Oscar nominated actor Graham return to the venture.

    Joan Lambur said, “We’re very excited about giving the lovable Dudley and his friends a large-scale makeover and introducing the series to a new generation of kids’ audiences.”




    Produced in 1993 by Breakthrough in association with TV Ontario, the original series was a combination of live action and puppetry featuring Dudley defined to be an affable, green and eight foot dragon that interacted with children through songs and stories.


    The original series has been licensed in over 180 territories including PBS in the US and Aboriginal Peoples Television Network in Canada. It has also won various awards including two Gemini Awards for Best Children‘s Programme/Series.

  • Nickelodeon launches its first iPhone applications













    MUMBAI : Nickelodeon has launched its first series of iPhone and iTouch applications in the Apple that features content based on television series SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and iCarly.


    Nickelodeon signaled its entry onto the iPhone with a mini-application, The SpongeBob Tickler.


    “The iPhone offers a unique extension for Nickelodeon‘s properties in the streaming mobile application and gaming world. We are implementing the latest designs and technologies to maximise the iPhone‘s touch-based platform, and creating a one-of-a-kind experience to coincide with each of our hit shows,” said Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group – digital media EVP Steve Youngwood.





    According to the channel, while a Dora the Explorer iPhone application will challenge kids to match shapes, count numbers and practice the alphabet in touch-and-shake oriented game play, based on a research-driven design, iCarly on the iPhone, published by Oasys, will be Nickelodeon‘s first live action iPhone application based on the tween property.


    SpongeBob SquarePants: SpongeBob‘s Wacky Walk is a game platform that will allow users to tap, swipe, tilt and shake scenery to get obstacles out of SpongeBob‘s way. The application will be launched in April.


    To be launched in June, Sara‘s Super Spa, an application based on the Shockwave.com web game, will combine time-management with touch based mini-games.


    SpongeBob SquarePants Diner Dash, published by Nickelodeon and PlayFirst, will create a portable SpongeBob-themed version of the popular casual game, Diner Dash, set in the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket and other under-the-sea locations. The application will launch in July.

  • Cartoon Network and Pogo unveil Feb lineup













    NEW DELHI : Kids entertainment channels Cartoon Network and Pogo have introduced new programmes as well a line up of new movies in February.


    So while Cartoon Network premiers its new series Ultimate Muscle from 19 February from Monday to Friday at 4 pm, Pogo will air its new comic live-action show I’m Old Enough on every Sunday at 11:00 am.


    Says Turner International India director-Programming South Asia Krishna Desai, “Cartoon Network and Pogo have yet again out performed in the past year. Clocking an average of 1.7 TVR, all of the top 100 children’s show transmissions belonged to Cartoon Network and Pogo in 2008. Cartoon Network continues to entertain kids’ through February by bringing in new season of Ultimate Muscle and Pogo introduces a new show I’m Old Enough and an engaging movie line-up.”





    Pogo will also telecast Make way for Noddy Marathon every Friday at 8:00 am as a tribute to Noddy. Additionally, Pogo has lined-up new movies including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Ice Age, The Polar Express, Barbie As Rapunzel, Barbie Of Swan Lake, Barbie And The Diamond Castle and Dancing Princess.


    Cartoon Network will also show new episodes of Ben 10: Alien Force from Monday to Wednesday at 6 pm.


    Moreover, the channel will telecast Harry Potter movies every Sunday at 12 pm and 7 pm.
