  • TV channels celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi

TV channels celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi

MUMBAI: It is the only festival where almost all the youth of the locality and nearby colonies come together and dance their heart out. This is the time when young minds can get a sneak peek into the life of the mischievous Bal Ganesha from their family members.

We are talking about Ganesh Chaturthi, the 11-day festival that celebrates the birth of Ganesha.

The Hindi general entertainment genre, over many years, has been a reflection of the type of content the audiences can relate to. Be it the saas-bahu sagas or shows on subjects pertaining to Indian society, the genre has portrayed the darker side of society on the one hand and also spread love and laughter on the other.

In the Hindi general entertainment space, Star Plus, Life OK and Sab are the only channels that will celebrate the joyous festival.

On Star Plus, the channel will showcase a special track in Nisha Aur Uske Cousins. The family follows the tradition of keeping Ganapati at their home and enjoying the festival.

On Life OK, the channel has created a special Ganesh Chaturthi episode in Mahadev, which will be aired on 29 August at 8pm and will run for an hour. It is coming up with a track of ‘Bhandasur’ who was an ansh of Ganesha.

On the other hand, Sab will have the celebration within three of its shows. In Badi Dooooor Se Aaye Hai, the Sunshine colony recently saw a squabble between its neighbours, but due to festive season the Ghotala family (alien family) decide on doing something which would get the residents together.

There is a competition with the neighbouring society on the best Ganapati. Sunshine colony attempts to make an eco-friendly Ganapati made out of sugar, to share some sweetness whereas Vasant and Varsha from the Ghotala family dress up like Vishnu and Parvati alongside the idol.

A show set in a Maharashtrian household, it marks a very important and auspicious festival for Chandrakant Chiplunkar Seedi Bambawala. Chiplunkar family along with the residents celebrate Ganpati in true Maharashtrian style with everyone dancing to Marathi songs, Marathi devotional bhajans/prayers and women dressed in Nauvari sarees, etc.

In Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai, the tenants of Bungalow no 6 decide to get a Ganapati at their house, so that everyone gets to celebrate the festival. Each tenant tries to pitch in with whatever way possible, sharing responsibilities.

On the other hand, music channels are also on the festive mode. 9X Jalwa has created a special package that will play only Ganapati songs as capsules, all through the 11 days.  The packaging includes songs like “Deva Shri Ganesha” (Agneepath, 2012), “Mourya Re” (Don, 2006), “Aarti” (Vaastav, 1999) and “Deva O Deva” (Ilaaka, 1989) etc.

  • Sony strengthens its fiction line-up

    Sony strengthens its fiction line-up

MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television seems to be strengthening its fiction line-up. The channel that believes in content being the king, keeps exploring with different storylines.  With not-so-strong fiction line-up, the Sony is all set to launch a new show which showcases the story of a man’s struggle to strike the perfect balance.

Come 1 September, the channel is will break the stereotype with Hum Hain Na. The Indian woman has always been the epitome of tradition and values in our society, but can the men be left far behind? Every mother has expectations from her son; every wife wants attention from her husband, every sister is possessive about her brother! But will the perfect man be able to live up to these expectations?

The new series dabbles with the subject that gets many women thinking – ‘kya ek perfect beta, ek perfect pati bhi ban sakta hai’?

Produced by DJ’s Creative Unit, Hum Hain Na is set in the beautiful town of Benaras and follows the life of a young and charming boy, Shivprasad Mishra aka Bunty (Kanwar Dhillon). An ideal brother, son and friend, he is the blue eyed boy of his family. His entire world revolves around the three women in his life – his amma, badi didi and chhoti.

In any given situation, he has quick fixes to brighten up the mood of each of his family members. But in a bid to keep everyone happy, Bunty’s own personal life is always in trouble. His life takes a turn when his elder sister makes him promise not to get married until she is married off. Being a true Benarasi, Bunty vows to never go back on his words but is stuck at the crossroads when he bumps into his dream girl, Saagarika (Pratyusha Banerjee), at a family wedding. Saagarika, raised single-handedly by her father who is unaware of a woman’s needs after her mother’s  death, sees a complete contrast in Bunty who is full of affection and is sensitive towards women. When these two opposites meet, what follows is a series of interesting and heart-warming events.

Sony chief creative director Ajay Bhalwankar believes that Indian television has always appreciated women’s contribution to a family, but this time it is celebrating a man’s role in bringing the family together.

Hum Hain Na is a refreshing yet modern take on how Bunty balances the different women in his life seamlessly. Our protagonist, Bunty transitions from being a doting brother and a caring son to a sensitive boyfriend so impeccably that it seems as if he is almost unreal. His sensitivity and emotional nature might make one feel he is metrosexual, but in reality his heart belongs to the values of the place he belongs to,” adds Bhalwankar.

DJ’s Creative Unit producers Deeya and Tony Singh asserts: “Hum Hain Na is a story very close to reality. It’s about a boy who is a perfect son and a perfect brother, he wants a wife who will embrace his universe which consists of his family. And a girl who wants to be the universe of her man, she desires to have a perfect husband who is sensitive to her needs as a woman. And. Now the question is can a boy who is a perfect son and a perfect brother also be a perfect husband? Will this become a perfect love story?”

The new emotional love story will air four days a week at 9.30pm. It is going to have a tough competition with other popular shows like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus, Qubool Hai on Zee TV, Rangrasiya on Colors, Tumhari Pakhi on Life OK and Badi Door Se Aaye Hai on Sab.

Ganesh Chaturthi Quotes of Zee TV actors

ShilpaShirodkar as Kamla Tai from EkMutthiAasman

“I don’t really have a lot of memories from my childhood, as a kid I was too scared to actually go out and take the initiative to actively participate in the Visarjan. I still feel uneasy in crowds and to be very honest, any place with too many people dancing or playing with colour, scares me. So I used to sit and watch & enjoy all these shows on television. The year before last, I went for my first Visarjan at Juhu beach. So, we bring Ganpati home and we perform all the rituals. Especially during the aarti, you see a different energy in the house and that is why I feel very sad when we have to bid adieu to bappa. But it is all in the hope that next year will be even better and bigger and brighter. Three years ago I went to Lalbaugcha Raja for a special darshan at 3am in the morning. This year I wish to go and see him again because I absolutely adore him.”

    HimanshuSonias Shivaye from NeeliChhatriWaale:

“I am originally from Jaipur and back home, for Ganesh Chaturthi, men get mehendi on their hands and the day culminates with a small Ganesh Pooja. When I first came to Bombay, I saw Ganesh Visarjan happening on television. I was amazed to see so many people religiously celebrating this festival together. I have heard a lot about LalBaghka Raja and this time I am going to make sure that I take time out to visit the pandal”.

Usha Nadkarni as Savita Tai from PavitraRishta

“I used to live in Grant road during the initial years of my life. I have fond memories of SarvajanikGanesh Visarjanthat we all used to do together as a colony. It was so much fun when everyone used to sing, dance and play games like Phugdi, Jimma on the way to the Visarjan ground. After marriage, I stopped going to pandalsas I used to prefer being at my brother’s placeand spending some time with him rather than going out. Moreover, Ganpati is my favorite God and his blessings are with me always. I don’t feel the need to visit any pandal to be nearer to him”.

    HitenTejwani as Manav from PavitraRishta

“When we were kids it used to be a very exciting ritual to go visit Ganpati in different homes in our society. The main charm was, of course, that we got to eat sweets, especially Modak. For the celebrations there used to be a pandal with music, games and cultural performances. It was a lot of fun and I have many great memories of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Eventually we started taking responsibility of organizing these celebrations in our society. Everyone is in a very nice festive mood and I enjoy attending the rituals that take place.Visarjan, of course is a very important occasion and on our way we go dancing and take along food made in different households. And if at all it starts raining, then everyone goes into a different frenzy altogether. This year I’ll most probably be in Pune with my family for the occasion. Since the last three-four years we have been going to Lalbaugh and given a chance I would love to go again.”

Mohit Malik as Samrat from DoliArmanon Ki

Ganpati holds a very special place in my life and I have been celebrating it with my family for years. This time too, my parents will be coming to visit me. Visarjan is the liveliest time and I remember last year I went for the Visarjan with my friends & family and we all danced, sang and had a lot of fun. This year for the first time we are bringing Ganesh ji home for five days. Till now we’ve had  himover for one and a half days or three days, so I think it is going to be great. All the credit for that of course goes to my wife, she is the one who really wanted us to bring him home for five days this year. Also, if I get the time I would love visit Lalbaugcha Raja with my family.

    AdityaRedij as Officer from Bandhan

“I have many fond memories of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. I’m from Kolhapur and there we used to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi on a large scale. I used to participate in the pandals of my society for which preparations used to start months in advance. From selecting the perfect idol of Ganeshji to deciding the colors and decorations, I used to play an integral part in making the whole event grand. These memories will always remain fresh in my mind. This year I’ll be having a pooja at home and if time permits I am looking forward to go visit Lalbaugcha Raja, which I haven’t had a chance to visit since I’ve been in Bombay. In Pune, when I was in college I remember going to the famous Dagdusheth HalwaiGanpati  on our bikes, parking 5-10kms away and then walking all the way. The kind of feeling that you get after visiting these pandals where you find spiritual presence is really amazing. This Ganesh Chaturthi is going to be very special because the kind of work I’ve been doing in Bandhan is somewhat on these lines and I feel that Ganesh ji’s blessings are always with me.”

  • Star Plus’ Satyamev Jayate to see a few changes, this season

Star Plus’ Satyamev Jayate to see a few changes, this season

MUMBAI: It was in 2012 when TV audiences woke up to Sunday morning slot once again. Star Plus with Satyamev Jayate at 11 am, tried to bring about a change in our society by bringing the ills gripping our society to the forefront.

The promos of the upcoming season have already gone live and each tells a story of a person who after watching a heart-wrenching episode has gone out to make a change in whatever manner he/she could. One of the promo tells a story of Nazia, who found a sexually-abused girl and went on to help her through Childline – a NGO working for kids. “Nazia is like one of us but through her one action she proved that it is we who can bring about a change,” says the host of the show Aamir Khan while highlighting that this time the focus on promos was not him but on heroes who made a difference. “It is all about possibilities.”

He highlights that the research team never went out to hunt for people like Nazia but while doing their study they met or were told about people who after watching SMJ went out of their way to help others.

In its third installment now, the show, which will go live on 21 September and consists of six episodes, will see a few new elements. The biggest change will be letting the common man talk to Khan. After the one and a half hour show, people can talk ‘live’ to Khan through social media – Facebook and Twitter -, phone or the show’s official website to share their issues on the topic discussed earlier.

“SMJ is about people and we want people to tell their views and issues so that together as a society we can bring about a change,” says Khan who will be travelling across various cities to connect with the people.

He believes that the show has changed him a lot. “I have become more patient and less judgmental,” he says while recalling that years ago when Star India CEO Uday Shankar had approached him for a game show he had made a correct decision by denying that and suggesting a show on social issues.

This time around, for the first time, other actors too will be seen on the show. “It is not for publicity. But only the actors who have done something for a particular issue or feel for it will be on the talk show,” clarifies Khan.

Believing that the change needs to be brought about from the grassroot level to revolutionise people’s mindset, Khan wants people, administrations and governments to make a note of the things. Stating the example of how after the female foeticide episode was aired, the sex ratio between girls and boys has risen, Khan says, “Earlier there were 890 girls per 1000 boys, but today it is 940 which is remarkable. A small step can make a huge difference.”

On a personal level, Khan wants four basic fundamental benefits given to each and every citizen of the country, namely, public health services, education, a quick and fair justice system and security through a strict law and order.

  • 500 episodes on, Star Plus’ ‘Veera’ claims story line maintained

500 episodes on, Star Plus’ ‘Veera’ claims story line maintained

MUMBAI: In an age when peers play a more important role than the family, Ek Veer Ki Ardaas…Veera, a show on Star Plus tells a different story. The show is about a pious relationship of a brother-sister duo.

While brothers and sisters are usually always fighting, the makers of Veera adapted a different route. It started off showcasing a beautiful bond between the duo featuring talented kids Bhavesh Balchandani and Harshita Ojha as the lead pair touching the hearts of audiences and getting them hooked to the show. For Star, this was a big risk as it was replacing a popular show Pratigya.

Moreover, the slot it was launched at- 10:30 pm, was one with intense competition from shows like Bade Achhe Lagte Hain on Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and Punar Vivaah on Zee TV.

Produced by Beyond Dreams Entertainment, the show was flagged off on 29 October 2012 and completed successful 500 episodes on 18 August 2014.

On the celebration mode, producer Yash Patnaik feels younger with every 100 episodes. “People say when you complete 500 episodes, it feels old. But we are getting younger with Veera. We have many stories to tell now,” he says.

Patnaik is happy the way Veera is panning out. Star Plus SVP marketing Nikhil Madhok and Patnaik believe that the USP of the show has been that it is character neutral. “We have many well defined characters that viewers can relate to. So we never run out of stories. Fortunately, for a show like this, it is not dependent on a central character,” says Patnaik. Apart from Veera and Ranveer, characters like Baldev, Ratan and Gunjan have an equally important role to play.

Madhok believes that in the first year, the main premise of a brother and sister who were not related by blood caught the fancy of a lot of older audiences. “They could relate to the emotion of the mother who had to deal with one child who is biologically hers and another one who is not. It had very mature emotions,” he says adding that the writer Purnendu Shekhar took it to a complete different level.

In the next phase, the makers and the channel decided to target the young audiences. It introduced a time leap of about 15 years with the characters grown up and a message of progressiveness.

“The aim was to convert the character with a large town mentality with the way Veera would dress and behave. This became her strong attribute. Similarly Ranveer became a musician, an unusual profession as far as Hindi GEC protagonists are concerned,” says Madhok.

Going forward, he reveals that viewers will get to witness the journey of Ranveer becoming a proper musician and will also see composition of original songs on the show itself.

Patnaik states that they haven’t deviated from the story at all. All the stages have been executed as planned. Just about 30 per cent of the plot has been told till now.

Industry sources reveal that the production cost ranges anywhere between Rs 6-8 lakh per episode. Madhok says Veera’s advertisers give a significant premium as compared to other shows. Media planners peg a 10 sec slot in the range of Rs 80,000 – Rs 1 lakh. Post the time leap, youth focused categories like telecom, apps and technology companies have come on-board as advertisers. But in the bargain, it did not lose traditional clients like FMCG products.

In week 33 of TAM TV ratings, Veera got dislodged from its leadership position with 4,991 TVTs. On the other side, it faces tough competition with Yudh on Sony Entertainment Television with 708 TVTs in the week 33 of TAM TV ratings, Uttaran on Colors with 2,436 TVTs, Savdhaan India: India Fights Back on Life OK with 2,721 TVTs, Doli Armaano Ki topped the slot with 5,378 TVTs and Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai on Sab with 1,025 TVTs.

  • Zee Entertainment Enterprises to be a Nifty 50 stock soon

Zee Entertainment Enterprises to be a Nifty 50 stock soon

MUMBAI: The Subhash Chandra-owned Zee Entertainment Enteprises Ltd (Zeel) is getting blue blooded once again. The Zeel stock is all set to get included in the 50-share CNX Nifty index, come 19 September 2014. It will be stepping into the spot left vacant by the eviction of the Diageo-controlled United Spirits Ltd (USL).  The latter enjoyed just a six month stay in the CNX Nifty 50 as it had been placed in it in April 2014.

India Index Services & Products Ltd, a NSE-Crisil joint venture that maintains the Nifty index, on 20 August, after market hours released a statement stating the same.

Zeel  jumped to a high of Rs 300 during the early trade on 21 August. It opened 1.7 per cent higher than the previous close of Rs 293, while the stock of USL  was trading under pressure, following news of its being dumped from the Nifty. The stock opened 3 per cent lower at Rs 2,390 and ended 2.1 per cent lower than the close on 20 August 2014.

This is not Zeel’s debut on the CNX Nifty 50 Index. It had an earlier stint which ended in March 2009 when  Axis Bank replaced it.  Another notable point is that while USL  has fallen more than 20 per cent since its inclusion in the Nifty 50 in April 2014, Zeel has risen around 35 per cent in the past one year.

NSE also announced other inclusions and exclusions in the index; Aurobindo Pharma and Motherson Sumi Systems will be included in CNX Nifty 100 replacing Mphasis and Zeel.

There have been changes in the CNX Nifty 200 as well. Companies such as CARE, Castrol India, Muthoot Finance, Edelweiss Financial Services, Kaveri Seeds, Marico among others will replace the likes of Adani Power, CRISIL, Bhushan Steel and Vijaya Bank etc.

A total of 15 companies in the CNX 500 index, two from the FMCG and LIX 15 indices and one each from the CNX Consumption and NI15 indices have been replaced. All the changes will be effective from 19 September 2014.

The CNX Nifty 50 index is reviewed every six months and a six week notice is given to the market before any changes are made to the index set.  As per the guidelines, only 10 per cent of the Nifty stocks (five stocks) can be reshuffled in a calendar year. Two stocks (USL and Tech Mahindra) were already included in the Nifty 50 in April 2014.

In 2010 and 2012, four stocks from the Nifty were replaced while in 2011, two stocks and 2013, three stocks were substituted.

Zeel also has been included in the recently launched CNX Media Index on the NSE and carried the maximum weight of 45.45 per cent in the index that comprises 15 media and entertainment stocks. The methodology for selection of the stock was based on free float market capitalisation.
