GECs aim to retain viewership with 8 show launches in March

MUMBAI: March is all set to be a mega launch month for entertainment with eight big-budget shows debuting on six general entertainment channels (GECs)—Sony Entertainment Television (SET), Colors, Zee TV, Star Plus, &TV and Sab TV.

Zee TV has already launched DID Li’l Masters season 4 on 3 March. The upcoming launches that are hitting TV screens in March are Sony’s Shriman Shrimati Phir Se on 13 March at 7.30 pm, Zee TV’s Ishq Subhan Allah on 14 March at 10 pm, &TV’s new dance reality show on weekends High Fever Dance Ka Naya Tevar on 17 March from 8 pm, SET’s new late-night show Yeh Pyaar Nahi Toh Kya Hai on 19 March at 11 pm, Colors’ Bepanah on 19 March at 9 pm, Star Plus’ Kulfi Kumar Bajewala on 19 March at 8.30 pm and SET’s popular comedy Family Time with Kapil Sharma on 25 March from 8 pm onwards.

Though channels are experimenting with new time slots, March is proving to be an ideal month for shows to premiere as the Indian Premier League (IPL) begins on 7 April and will continue till 27 May.

The IPL has a massive roadblock for most Hindi GECs as the nail-biting cricket extravaganza used to routinely cannibalise GEC viewership, sometimes sealing the fate of primetime soaps forever. Now that Star India holds the rights from this year, channels are prepping new shows to capture viewers’ attention.

Looking back at the ten seasons of the IPL, GEC viewership has been subsumed by cricket. With the IPL luring eyeballs, the trend seems to be that audiences give the Hindi GECs a miss during the two months of the year.

In the tenth season, which commenced on 5 April 2017, within three days, SPN India’s Hindi movie channel Sony Max rose to the top of ratings in the Hindi movies genre list for week 15 of BARC 2017 with 14,29,479 (000s) impressions. Sony Max telecast the IPL matches till last year.

However, before the launch of the IPL, in week 13 of BARC India data, Sony Pal led the Hindi GEC (urban + rural) markets with 702,603 (000s) impressions. With a fall in viewership in week 14, however, Star Plus grabbed the first position in Hindi GEC (U+R) markets with 691,210 (000s) impressions and the viewership continued to fall in week 15 with Star Plus leading again but with 678,258 (000s) impressions.

Being grouped in the category of highest viewership is never easy. From creating new time slots to bringing in compelling content, it is always a struggle to retain and attract eyeballs. Therefore, it seems like a smart move on the part of the broadcasters to launch the shows before the IPL starts and get a good hold on viewership.

With the launch of the Shrimaan Shrimati Phir Se, Sony SAB is all set to create ripples in the entertainment genre with its fresh take on the 90s hit comedy series Shrimaan Shrimati by presenting it in a new avatar. The story of the show is based on the premise of ‘love the neighbour.’

Zee TV introduces viewers to the world of Kabeer and Zara who are grappling with the issue of triple talaq first-hand in its new fiction offering, Ishq Subhan Allah, even as the Parliament is debating the case.

& TV’s High Fever Dance Ka Naya Tevar is the new dance reality show offering on weekend time slots. The show will explore the strength of dancing pairs across age groups based on their relationships. The pair can be real-life family pairs such as husband-wife, mother-daughter, father-son or couples.

Partnering once again with Bindu & SJ Studios, SET is bringing a breezy yet absorbing world of romance in Yeh Pyaar Nahi Toh Kya Hai. It’s that shade of love, which is unspoken but palpable, unexpressed but perceptible of Siddhant Sinha (Namit Khanna) and Anushka Reddy (Palak Jain).

Bepanah, premiering on Colors, is a romantic thriller and drama TV series with Jennifer Winget and Harshad Chopra in lead roles. The show is produced by Cinevistaas Ltd.

Star Plus’ new show Kulfi Kumar Bajewala will showcase the journey of Kulfi, essayed by Aakriti Sharma. The new show is being produced by 4 Lions Films and Invictus T Mediaworks.

Comedy king Kapil Sharma is back in a new avatar with Family Time with Kapil Sharma from March 25 onwards. The show will premiere immediately after the Super Dancer Chapter 2 finale, which is on March 24. The new promo of the show was launched on 10 March.

SET has also announced the comeback of ace superstar Salman Khan with his show Dus ka Dum. Speculation, however, is that the show will launch only after the IPL. For now, there seems to be no new show in the pipeline for the upcoming two months.

With interesting shows lined up this month, Hindi GECs are attempting to get viewers to switch their loyalties from the IPL to shows. Since the IPL is on a new platform this time, Star Sports, it would be interesting to see the ratings pan out.

Star Bharat announces the launch of Chandrashekar

MUMBAI: Star Bharat announces the launch of its marquee show Chandrashekar a finite fiction series that narrates the story of firebrand freedom fighter Chandrashekar Azad in about 110 episodes. Set to launch on March 12th at 10 pm the series will capture each incident which marks the change from an ordinary young boy to the maverick revolutionary who decided to stand up for what he believed in. The show echoes the channel’s brand proposition ‘Bhula De Darr Kuch Alag Kar’ and inspires its viewers to overcome their fears.

Produced by Anirudh Pathak of Mahadev, Siya ke Ram, and Mahakumbh fame, the show set in pre-Independence India, charts Chandrashekar Tiwari’s transition from a young carefree 8-year-old to Chandrashekar Azad, whose mere mention made the British government break out in cold sweat. This show projects Chandrashekar as a multi-faceted personality, driven by the core philosophy that to fear is to die many times over. Inspired by his life, writer’s galaxy production has recreated his formative years based on events documented about this great hero.

Star Bharat Spokesperson said, “We believe in content that inspires change. Like our other clutter breaking shows, Chandrashekar too breaks the mould of a typical freedom struggle saga. Instead, it focuses on the minutiae of his life, the little details, the many twists and turns in his life that made him what he was – a towering revolutionary who knew no fear. Chandrashekar is a seamless fit with Star Bharat’s brand philosophy of ‘Bhula de Darr, Kuch Alag Kar’. We hope our show inspires our audience to work through their fears, overcome obstacles to meet their goals just like Chandrashekar did.”

Accomplished writer-producer Anirudh Pathak added, “Chandrashekar, even while it narrates the journey of one of India’s greatest revolutionaries, is also an inspiration. It shows that if our focus is right then come what may we will achieve what we set out to. Not many people know that Chandrashekar belonged to a remote village and by his sheer grit, determination, and courage came to be regarded as the commander in chief of the revolutionary army. This is also the story of a mother-son relationship, a journey of mother to motherland story where the mother is the source of Chandrasekhar’s courage and bravery. Chandrashekar resonates powerfully with Star Bharat’s brand philosophy of “Bhula de Dar, Kuch Alag Kar.”

Chandrashekhar will feature Ayaan Zuabir Rahmani as young Chandu, Sneha Wagh as Chandu’s inspirational mother Jagrani Devi and  Satyajeet Sharma as Sitaram Tiwari, Chandu’s father.

  • ‘Savdhaan India’ axed overnight by Star Bharat

‘Savdhaan India’ axed overnight by Star Bharat

MUMBAI: Another shocking news from the television world is coming from the desk of TellyChakkar. According to our sources, popular crime show Savdhaan Indiais getting axed from Star Bharat.

A little birdie informs us that the GEC has given the final verdict to the producers today. The show is produced by eight different production houses. The GEC has asked the producers to stop shooting for the series.

Apparently, the reason behind the sudden shutdown is the criticism that the show is receiving due to poor execution of crime in the storyline. The decision was informed overnight, which led to a sudden uproar among the production houses. “The entire production unit, including the technicians and actors are jobless all of a sudden,” a source claimed.

Star Bharat has surprisingly been doing very well on the rating charts. Therefore, the channel is wasting no time to eliminate shows that are not doing well. Just within few months of its revamp, the GEC has already pulled off two shows–Aayushmann Bhava and Jai Kanhaiya Lal.

We couldn’t get through the channel spokesperson. While a source placed in the channel refuted the news, our credible sources confirm the development.

Accordingly, the shooting has stopped and only the episodes that have been shot will air. Now, it is uncertain whether the channel will rerun the old episodes or completely pull off the show.

The crime series is primarily hosted by Sushant Singh and has been hosted by guests such as Mohnish Behl, Pooja Gaur, Saurabh Raj Jain, Shivani Tomar, Hiten Tejwani, Divya Dutta and Siddharth Shukla.

Savdhaan India has been the longest-running Indian television series in terms of episode count. So, with the plug pulled out, a legacy comes to an end.

Sony SAB launches Saat Phero Ki Hera Pherie

MUMBAI: ‘Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus’ is not just a famous book title but has become a catchphrase which truly illustrates the behavioral differences between men and women. The two genders can be poles apart in the way they think or emote. Sony SAB’s new show Saat Phero Ki Hera Pherie addresses this exact phenomenon, the show will showcase the various hilarious situations that arise in the daily lives of married couples due to gender roles and differences. Launching on Tuesday, 27 February 2018, Monday to Friday at 21 30 hours only on Sony SAB.

Set in suburban Mumbai, the plot revolves around the lives of two neighbours – the Tandons’ and the Desais’. Bhupi Tandon, a man in his fifties, has his own travel agency. He strongly believes that the ‘Man’ is the boss of the house and so loves to dominate over his wife. While he is also a jovial and kind-hearted person who loves his wife, he takes advantage of being the patriarchal head of the family. Making a comeback in the role of Bhupi is veteran actor, Shekhar Suman. His wife, Neetu, is a woman seeped in traditional Indian values. A loving mother and a caring wife, she follows all religious rituals and spends most of her day in the kitchen dishing out delicious fares for her family. The role of Neetu is being played by the talented Swati Shah.

Their neighbors are a young married couple – Parimal and Rupal Desai. Parimal, played by Amit Mistry, is a complete opposite of Bhupi, a henpecked and a wife-fearing man! Parimal is a manager at a broking firm and is always entangled in transactions of the stock exchange. Enacted by Ami Trivedi, Rupal comes from a rich upbringing and is constantly buying material comforts to upgrade her lifestyle much to the dismay of her husband, who is always submerged under the EMI burden. Rupal believes in living life queen size and is constantly changing her mind and her business ideas. In short, their marriage is a ‘workshop’, where he ‘works’ and she ‘shops’!

Adding to camaraderie is 25-year-old Goldie Sharma, who is a hopeless romantic. Played by Kevin Dave, he is single and always ready to mingle. He finds his dream girl in every girl he sees. Goldie also takes advantage of his neighbours’ generosity and depends on them for his daily meals, often borrowing money from them. He calls himself a freelancer, but the truth is that he gets kicked out of any job he gets into, due to his laziness. Being indecisive, he is not exactly a mature, stable guy that girls generally look for and eventually ends up getting dumped by them.

Channel SAB, Sr. EVP & Head, Neeraj Vyas said, “True to SAB’s brand promise of ‘Haste Raho India’, our new offering, Saat Phero Ki Hera Pherie, presents a humorous take on how life partners face and manage gender roles and inter-relationship differences. The content is very refreshing and contemporary. The show features a fabulous ensemble of fine actors with some amazing comic timing. We are certain that Saat Phero Ki Hera Pherie will appeal to all our viewers.”

  • Crime reality shows maybe doing more harm than good

Crime reality shows maybe doing more harm than good

MUMBAI: The darker genres of storytelling such as thriller, crime and horror have hooked viewers for years. Though at times gory, viewers gulp down crime stories if they are crafted with an element of fun. But a rise in criminals imitating scenes from shows has led people to blame both Bollywood and TV shows, not for showing, but for inspiring real-life crimes in India.

There is a very thin line between spreading awareness and sensationalism when it comes to this genre. Though the concept may be appreciated, the negative impact is hardly taken into consideration.

When it comes to crime reality television, Sony airs Crime Patrol Dial 100, Crime Patrol Satark and Crime Patrol Dastak running at various time slots. Star Bharat is also deep into the genre with three related shows – Savdhaan India – India Fights Back, Savdhaan India – Darr kar nahi datt kar and Savdhaan India – Kisse Anokhe.

Recent cases of a brother killing his own sister and mother, or a boyfriend killing his girlfriend, are manifestations of fast-changing and deteriorating mental streaks in which these crimes have lost value. Their conscience isn’t disturbed by their act because they are used to it and the psyche is immune to others’ pain.

The positive side isn’t to be ignored. They bring to light various common crimes occurring across the country and enable their audience to be wary of similar happenings. Moreover, they help reaffirm people’s belief in the police system and encourage them to report crimes. Another major learning for viewers is to be cautious while employing domestic help and being alert to their surroundings.

According to Psychologist Dr Sanjoy Mukerji if a person wants to be happy, peaceful and positive in life, they have to focus more on the positive things then the negative things. “Crime reality shows bring an addiction and negativity to the people,” he says adding that they also have a positive impact by reinforcing belief in the police.

Counselling psychologist Rashi Laskari says that while show makers have the right intentions, the content ends up having a negative impact on some people. “Sensitive individuals, more so children or the elderly, are unable to see this reality as occasional, and start perceiving the world to be a bad place in general, which takes away their trust from their surroundings, making them experience intense negative emotions.”

Laskari adds, “We often see cases where individuals have developed a fear of moving around safely, as they imagine themselves in the role of the victim. This is also seen with children and teenagers, when they watch abusive behaviour on television, they absorb it as real, and either pick negative traits or become very scared and show changes in their behaviour.”

Psychiatrist Dr Rajiv Anand says that people look for excitement from their own and others’ lives. “So, whenever they hear any story concerning crime in other peoples’ lives, their antennae are alert. Human minds get swallowed into sensationalism. It begins simply as a kick but then it becomes a habit and they get dependent on the supply.”

When the mind is repeatedly bombarded with same crime stories, viewers live with them, visualise them, dream oft hem and form an obsession. This leads to a desire to experiment.

Laskari, while sharing her experiences, says that she has seen a case where grandparents would watch Saavdhaan India on a regular basis, and would believe the dramatic representation to be true. She says, “As a result of it, they would talk to the grandchild every day about the ‘bad’ that happens in the world, and instil a fear in the child’s mind about bad people and the harm they can cause. As a result, the child became fearful of everything- such as playing with friends, going to the washroom alone, answering the doorbell and many more things.”

These shows also instil fear in people. Dr Mukerji says he has seen people complaining of anxiety due to the shows. He added, “Women say that their husbands are scared to leave them alone at home.”

Shows tend to desensitise people to crime. Therefore, sometimes, even if a murder takes place in front of their eyes, people will take photographs rather than take preventative action. Viral videos of crimes are spreading and breaking down the wall between the real and virtual.

In the year 2016, the average per episode viewership of Crime Patrol was 1.6 million impressions, Crime Patrol Dastak was 1.3 million impressions, Crime Patrol Dial 100 was 1.8 million impressions and Crime Patrol Satark was 1.7 million impressions per episode, from 6 pm to 12 am. However, Savdhaan India garnered 2.5 million average impressions per episode during the peak hours.

In the year 2017, the average per episode viewership of Savdhaan India was 2.8 million impressions, Savdhaan India- India Fights Back was 0.8 million impressions per episode, Savdhaan India- Kisse Anokhe was 2.0 million impressions per episode, Crime Patrol Dial 100 was 1.8 million impressions per episode and Crime Patrol Satark was 1.8 million impressions per episode between 6 pm to 12 am.

As the ratings show, the popularity of crime shows is far from dwindling. They hold steady and broadcasters are creating sub genres within the crime genre. Despite the warnings that television shows advising people to only consider them as dramatic representations, people absorb them as real events. Whether entertainment or a mirror to reality, crime shows are here to stay for now.
