  • Shahid, Kareena & Karisma on Koffee with Karan this Sunday, on Star One and Star World

MUMBAI: The caffeine on this show is addictive. Honest, candid, witty and stylish… you must have experienced all of this on ‘Koffee with Karan’ last week, this Sunday meet the frank, forthright and fabulous actress Kareena Kapoor and Bollywood’s favourite chocolate boy hero who makes her world go round… Shahid Kapur. Also, joining the sweet couple is the glamorous and gorgeous actress, Karisma Kapoor. Catch the Kapoors’ chat about their relationships, rumors and their career with Karan Johar, this Sunday, March 4th at 9 p.m. only on Star One and Star World.

Kareena, who was possibly the most irreverent guest on the show in the last season, promises to be even better this time round. From clarifying her problems with Shah Rukh, the Chopras and the Bachchans, she confesses on the show that she is the one who chased Shahid for two months! Kareena also admits that she is a hyper-hysterical girl friend and says, “Shahid is a very good looking guy and his smile can charm a lot of women… so I do get a little nervous.” Shahid talks about the initial insecurities in their relationship, the positive influence they have had on each from Kareena becoming a vegetarian to Shahid becoming more chilled out and relaxed. That’s not all, Karan also tests the couple’s compatibility quotient by quizzing them individually on how much they know about each other. Do they score a 10 on 10? Wait and watch!

But the real show stealer is the rapid fire round where Karan bombards a volley of questions to Shahid & Kareena. Who is the better dancer – Hrithik or Shahid, whom does Kareena chose? Shah Rukh, Hrithik or Aamir, the superstar Kareena loves? The one woman Shahid would cheat on Kareena for? Kareena in Chameli or Kareena in Omkara – which one was a better performance according to Shahid? If this was not enough, Karisma Kapoor is called on to decide the winner of the rapid fire round? Whom does Karisma choose, her brutally honest kid sister Bebo or Shahid? Lot of revelations… Lot of tongue-in-cheek moments… definitely a must watch!

    Excerpts from the interview:

Karan: Who are really your friends Bebo?

    Kareena: laughs … Oh god!!

Karan: Because the whole story goes that Kareena only befriends people who are not a threat to her …

Kareena: Oh my god! What is this .. Ahh ….. I don’t think so .. But the only actress I think I am closest to is Amrita Arora … She is my only genuine best friend whose an actress..

Karan: Three years Shahid, with Kareena ..How would you best define your relationship?

Shahid: It goes beyond words .. She is the centre of my life .. I can’t think of a day without her .. I am very thankful to God for having her in my life … I think I am very lucky …

Karan: Is she the hyper hysterical girlfriend .. Is she the where you are, what you are doing kind of girl friend …

Shahid: She has calmed a lot in the last three years .. but I think every woman has these insecurities .. and I think it takes the two people to understand and deal with each others’ areas of ups and downs .. but I think .. yes I am sure she has .. and so do I have these phases of insecurities which we all do .. I think she has come to trust me a lot ..it takes time for things to settle down ..

Karan: You take up for Shahid a lot .. is that true?

    Karisma: Yes I do ..

Karan: In what way .. what does he do .. that he needs taking up for?

Karisma: Well, I mean generally … when they are fighting with each other. I am always caught in the middle of it .. and if I really feel that Shahid is right then I really fire Bebo …

For all the fun, criticisms and disclosures, catch Karan’s interesting t?te-?-t?te with Shahid and Kareena on ‘Koffee with Karan’, this Sunday, March 4th at 9 p.m. on Star One and Star World

  • Catch Mallika Sherawat and Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Koffee with Karan on February 25th at 9 p.m

MUMBAI: Karan loves to serve his coffee ‘hot’… and the next episode promises to be ‘piping hot’! His first guest is saucy, sexy and sensational… She is the unofficial brand ambassador of the show, having been mentioned in practically each and every episode of the last season! This Sunday, meet the quote-a-minute, bold and brash, Mallika Sherawat.

Karan’s second guest is one of the finest filmmakers in Bollywood… a man behind many-a-masterpiece and Karan’s favorite director, meet Sanjay Leela Bhansali only on Koffee with Karan. Watch this unusual combination together for the first time, in an exciting and entertaining t?te-?-t?te, this Sunday, February 25th at 9 p.m. on Star One and Star World!

Sanjay and Mallika hit it off instantaneously, as they meet for the first time on the sets of Koffee with Karan. Mallika talks about how glad she is to be on the show, after being discussed at length, last season! She opens her heart out on the show, discussing several topics varying from her sensational quotes, which make headlines and the various characters she’s enacted… from the sexy and sensuous role in Murder to the girl-next-door in Pyaar Ke Side Effects.

She admits on the show that she suffers from a major superiority complex! Sanjay talks about how Mallika has proved him right; as he had predicted that she is the most promising newcomer, when he was on the show last season. He talks about his upcoming film Sanwariyan, his love-hate relationship with Aishwarya Rai and the fact that he is envious of his fellow-directors, to the extent of avoiding their films. Watch him give precious advice to Mallika on how to tackle rumours and how to deal with her superiority complex!

And as always, the eagerly awaited rapid fire round results in some very interesting revelations. So which actors would Mallika like in her harem of hunks and how would she like to be pampered by them? Which older man would she like to seduce? Who does she think has the sexiest butt in Bollywood? Who does Sanjay think is the most over-rated actor and director in Bollywood? Who would he choose between Madhuri, Aishwarya and Rani? Who takes the hamper home? Sanjay or Mallika? Karan definitely has a tough time deciding the winner of the most desired possession on his show – the coffee hamper!

    Excerpts from the interview:

Karan: Welcome to Koffee with Karan!!!

    Mallika: Thanks!

Karan: So you are finally on the show. Everyone used to ask me when are you getting Mallika Sherawat on the show?

Mallika: I’ve provided enough entertainment for Koffee with Karan. I’ve been made fun of… been ridiculed!

Karan: No! No! That’s not what used to happen!

Mallika: Of course! That was it! You think I don’t know!

    Karan: (Laughs)

Mallika: No harm! I’m sitting here and as Robert De Niro said, “You didn’t knock me down! I’m still standing!”

Karan: You were always the option when we asked the men, who was the sexiest woman they thought.. The answer was always you! You think you were a safe option for them?

Mallika: I think I am a woman who dared!

    Karan: Oh really?

Mallika: Yes! Probably that’s why the answer… but I take it as a compliment.. as a big compliment…

Karan: What else can she ask for and when people say things about her and about her being honest and controversial… What do you have to say about that?

Sanjay: I think… I just said… She is what she is. She doesn’t pretend herself as someone else. She speaks her mind out and to her I want to say “Kuch to log kahenge… logo ka kaam hai kehna. You just do what you are doing.. be what you are and keep working!”

Mallika: Very encouraging Sanjay! Thank you so much! You know I must say something. Everyone told me that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is this intense Guru Dutt kind of director. ..don’t joke with him too much. Be very serious and Karan Johar is extremely sensitive… don’t offend him.. Keep your mouth shut!

Karan: You can offend us! We won’t mind too much!
Sanjay: We’re used to not feeling like you! And it really doesn’t make a difference!

Karan: Aren’t you seeking love in your life?

Mallika: I want to seek love! Lots of love!

Karan: Love from a man, darling! Not from the masses.

Mallika: Am talking about love from a man, yes!

Karan: There’s never a lonely moment, you want to share?

Mallika: There are lots of lonely moments. I am alone. I live alone in the city. Family is not here. It gets excruciating being lonely. But I have to learn to deal with it. I genuinely haven’t met a man who doesn’t believe that women are superior to men. The day I meet a man…

Sanjay: But Mallika… Why should a woman be superior to a man?

    Karan: Exactly!

Mallika: I somehow have a clinical disorder!

Sanjay: I don’t think you should suffer anymore from it because its important to know that men are women are equal! Men should not say that women are inferior and women should not think so either..

Mallika: Are both of you’ll ganging up on me?

    Sanjay: No!

Mallika: Yes! You are ganging up on me!

So, make sure you book your couch space for this Sunday as Karan catches up with the sizzling Mallika Sherawat and the master-director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, on Koffee with Karan this Sunday, February 25th on Koffee with Karan, on Star One and Star World, at 9 p.m.

  • A fistful of digital ‘fury’

    A fistful of digital ‘fury’

NEW DELHI: When digital technology meets martial arts, it can produce some really scary moments.

Hear Mickey Stern and John Brenkus, executive producers for Fight Science, part of NatGeo’s upcoming series on the arts, Fists of Fury. They saw a samurai sword slice completely through a ballistics-gel torso.

They tell indiantelevision.com in an exclusive interaction: “Watching the sword slice through the ballistics-gel torso, and knowing what it could do to a human body was the most scary moment for us. Examining the data of killer moves that had never been made on a human being, and realising what was possible… there is a frightening level of performance that some of these guys can go to.”

But ‘examining the data of killer moves?’ What would that mean in terms of making a series on martial arts? Well, if Nasa technology can be used for making a TV serial, anything could be possible, they say.

This is a series on martial arts in which NatGeo offers its viewers a riveting journey into the extraordinary world of martial arts.

“A one-stop shop for all martial arts fans”, an announcement from the channel says that “Fists of Fury gives viewers an insight into what is martial art myth and what is not, an insight into what it takes to be a martial arts champion, a countdown of the best killing weapons, revealing the reality behind the deadly martial arts using scientific breakthroughs and gripping footage.”

The series will be telecast from 12 February at 10 pm. Talking about the Nasa technology used to make the series, Stern and Brenkus told indiantelevision.com: “A company called Tekscan created in-shoe pressure sensors for Nasa space suits – sheets of plastic embedded with thousands of receptors.

“These provided constant real-time feedback to the computer – a perfect topographical map over the surface of the foot, where we watched the centre of gravity and the base of support, and the exact amount of pressure being exerted over any part of the surface area.

“Glen Levy, demonstrating a ninja technique of climbing plum poles (ever-ascending poles that become more pliant as they get higher), turned in a jaw-dropping reading. He told us that when he is doing balance techniques, he visualises his centre of gravity all the way down to his ankles, and that he uses all 10 toes as antennae.

“On the read-outs, you can see his toes working like the fingers of a piano player. He was incredibly precise and incredibly quick and minute in his adjustments. He really did move like a cat. The scientists from Tekscan were looking at it and saying, “This is not a normal human reading.”

It was a technologically back-breaking series to make. In all, 32 motion picture cameras were used. So how did it all add up to go into the creation of the series?

The producers explained: “Ultimately, we took the data captured by the martial artists – wearing tight suits studded with reflectors, and duplicating moves they had already made for the live-action cameras earlier in the day – and imposed it on a 3-D model in three layers: one for bones, one for muscles and one for nerves.

“The angles of motion, the velocity and acceleration of particular motion, the length of an arc through the air… all are things that are measured from the data points that are driving animation.

“A third layer that we applied, which is very seldom done, is body scanning. So when you take perfect data, real high-end CGI, and scans of the person’s actual body, you’ve got as accurate a model of that person’s movement as you could possibly create using current technology.”

The producers also said that they used crash dummy tests. But why? They say they wanted a government-certified system which could be held up as one not something that is experimental science.

“We wanted to know with 100 per cent certainty what force these fighters were capable of generating. The experts in the crash testing industry know more about real-life impacts on the human body than anyone else in the world.

“This isn’t “theoretical science” – this is about real trauma to real bodies, and we wanted to capture that. We insisted on a government-certified dummy so that there was nothing experimental about our findings.”

In more than one ways thus is a unique series, brining together hitherto unconnected people and technologis. As they put it: “It’s the first time we’ve brought together the crash test industry, the sports biomechanics industry and the Hollywood animation industry in one place. We pooled their best technology and applied it to a single subject – martial arts performance. These are people from industries who have never looked at the martial arts field before. It was entirely new for them.”

But is this a comprehensive and all-encapsulating series on the diverse arena of martial arts? Stern says: “There are actually scores or even hundreds of martial arts – we tried to have diversity in geographical and cultural origins. We chose the biggest categories, the archetypal styles – particularly ones that involved grappling, punching, kicking… some hard linear styles and some curving nonlinear styles. We also said let’s make sure we represent the “granddaddies,” so to speak – you’ve got to have kung fu, you’ve got to have tae kwan do, you’ve got to have jiu jitsu.”

  • Animal Planet looks at Bamboo Flowers

Animal Planet looks at Bamboo Flowers

MUMBAI: Animal Planet will air the show When The Bamboo Flowers. Normally a vital and versatile plant for villagers in northeast India, bamboo sets off cycles of famine and plague once every 48 years – a rare, yet ruinous occurrence for the local human population.

For rats, however, it’s a feast for the ages – a colossal feeding that has beset the region for centuries leaving thousands of ravenous rats and widespread human deprivation in its wake. The show airs on 12 November at 9 pm and on 15 November at 8 pm

The show brings Animal Planet viewers to Mizoram, a rugged hill state in northeast India. It has been 48 years since the bamboo last flowered and villagers are anxiously preparing for the impending invasion. The strange phenomenon of the flowering of the bamboo is unique to northeast India, which is home to vast plantations of the tree-like plant.

After the massive cyclical flowering, the bamboo plants produce large amounts of seeds – a good food source for rats, which quadruple their reproduction rate while feeding. The explosion of the rat population results in quick exhaustion of the seeds, leading thousands of rodents to turn to standing crops of the agricultural villages. The result is a widespread famine and, more often than not, plague.

Back in 1958, famine led to nearly two decades of insurgency in the region and tens of thousands of people perished. Now, in 2006, the bamboo is flowering again and Animal Planet visits the villagers as they prepare for inevitable catastrophe, hoping this time that the outcome is different.

  • NGC deduces the science of Hollywood

NGC deduces the science of Hollywood

MUMBAI: What is fact and what is fiction? In Hollywood it is often difficult to tell the diference.

Now the National Geographic Channel (NGC) is set to unveil the realism behind stunts and special effects in Hollywood films with a new show Science of Hollywood. Can what is shown on the silver screen actually happen in real life?

The show kicks off on 27 November at 9 pm.
Appropriately enough the first episode looks at car chases. How realistic were the car chases in flicks such as The Bourne Identity, Bullit and The French Connection? Can the vehicles in the films really burn rubber and do hairpin turns?

In the episode Disasters At Sea the show examines whether the oceanic disasters depicted in the big gorssing film of al time Titanic, The Perfect Storm and The Poseidon Adventure true to life or was there a tidal wave of Hollywood fiction at play?

Fans of 007 should check out Spy Gadgets. From Bond to Bourne, the world of espionage has fascinated cinemagoers for decades. But how many of the gadgets are actually used in real life?

CGI and interviews with top scientists and filmmakers combine to separate fact and fiction within Hollywood’s most famous depictions of scientific phenomena and historical fact.Bond’s Aston Martin and Knight Rider’s KITT were high-tech for their time, but Minority Report gave us a very different look at the future of cars. Was the director of that film Steven Spielberg realistic about his vision of the future?

Next month the channel takes a look inside special events with what it calls Inside Series. This kicks of on 18 December 2006 at 10 pm. Speaking to indiantelevision.com on this NGC VP marketing Rajesh Sheshadri says, “This takes viewers inside special events and the logistics that go into making them possible. The first episode is called Inside – Rolling Stones In Rio.

” This is is one of the biggest concerts in history with an iconic band. 1.5 million people attended the free concert. Viewers will see what takes place behind the scenes to transform salt and sand into a high-tech light and sound extravaganza. 200 tons of equipment were used to build a seven story stage, and keep over a million screaming fans safe.”

The show will also go inside the Fifa Club Championship Toyota Cup. For clubs around the globe the crowning of the Fifa Club World Champions is the ultimate event. Teams from six continents battle for the title in the great soccer cathedrals of Japan. 1,500 media will be accredited and over 45,000 fans will cram into each stadium.

The show goes behind the scenes to see what it takes to put on such an international spectacle. A spidercam will give soccer viewers at home a new perspective on the game. Viewers will follow the story of a team of referees as they encounter their moment of truth, the announcement of the selected referees for the final match.

Another episode is called Inside – Hong Kong’s Big Bang. Seven million revelers take to the streets of Hong Kong to join one of the biggest parties in the world.

How do you throw the party of the century? At the close of each lunar year, the streets of Hong Kong fill with tourists hungry to be entertained by some of the best party-planners in the world. But this is no ordinary year.. Over a half million tourists are expected to join the seven million Hong Kong residents to celebrate the Year of the Dog. Entertainers come from all over the world, 1,000 boats crowd Victoria Harbor and hundreds of highly-trained police officers will oversee the masses to make sure the celebration goes off without a hitch.

Viewers will find out what goes on in the control rooms, on the floating powder kegs, and beyond the stage doors of Hong Kong’s most anticipated day. As tourists, organisers, and partygoers converge upon Hong Kong, Inside captures the technology and toil of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
