    Discovery to launch mobile, broadband channels in US

    MUMBAI: Today television content providers are looking to take advantage of new media platforms like the internet and mobile.

    Discovery in the US will launch Discovery Mobile for mobile video. It will also launch two new broadband channels, Discovery Channel Beyond and Travel Channel Beyond, for Internet users.

    Discovery Mobile will be a 24-hour mobile programming network featuring original content from Discovery’s core program genres. It will debut in the third quarter of 2006. The network’s content will consist of segments ranging in length from 30 seconds to four minutes, categorized into 20-minute blocks. Material will include made-for-mobile series, abbreviated versions of Discovery programs, never-before-seen footage, and user-generated content. The service is targeted to users 15-39.

    The two Internet channels will short-form programmes, as well as user-generated documentaries, over the Internet. TLC, Animal Planet and Discovery Health Channel will also launch on broadband in the coming months.

    MUMBAI: Fox has announced that it will make a film based on the television series The Simpsons. the film will be released on 27 July 2007.

    Starring in the animated film are series regulars Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Pamela Hayden, and Tress MacNeille. Guest starring in the movie are Erin Brockovich, Minnie Driver, and Albert Brooks.

    One of the film’s producers Matt Groening says, “We are very excited about the performances in this movie. Come next Oscars, we think it’s going to be Milhouse’s night”.

    Another producer Al Jean says, “I can absolutely guarantee that this film will far exceed the wildest expectations of every Simpsons fan. Start lining up at the theater now, preferably in costume.”

    MUMBAI: Spicy, pungent, sweet and sour! Discovery takes its viewers through a colourful glimpse into Indian culture, food and customs in Feast India every Saturday at 9 pm for the next two months.

    The English-born chef Barry Vera savours the delights of simple street food and the variety of regional cuisine as he immerses himself and viewers in the diverse cultural influences that make each region of India so distinct. Along the way, he enjoys a delectable meal at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi; where several thousand devotees are served daily.

    From the small town plantation town of Kumili in Kerala to the chaotic buzz of Mumbai – the home to Dubbawallahs, from the village wedding in Pushkar to the festivities of Diwali, Feast India captures the this diverse and intensely beautiful country.

    Discovery India brand dierctor Raja Balasubramanian said, “Feast India highlights the diverse Indian cuisines as Barry Vera takes viewers through a culinary journey across India. Apart from its gastronomy, the series also presents the fascinating and colourful cultures and festivals of India.”

    From g delicacies to age-old customs and festivities, viewers will watch the best India has to offer. Kochi, The Backwaters airs on 8 April at 9 pm. On the humid, lush coast, famous Chinese fishing nets operate just as they have for the last 600 years. In Kochi, the delicious street food and abundant fish vie for attention in the local markets. Cruising the palm-fringed backwaters and dining delicious Indian thalli, the episode gives viewers a taste of life in a south Indian island village.

    In Old Delhi on 15 April the Mughal architecture looms above the narrow lanes and delicious Muslim food is served in an atmosphere of friendly chaos. Unusual delicacies are offered in the aromatic labyrinth of one of the largest wholesale spice markets in Asia. Viewers also get a glimpse into the kitchens of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, where enough food is cooked to nourish tens of thousands of pilgrims each day.

    Jodphur – Salt Mines airs on 22 April The busy bazaars of Jodphur will hook viewers with Rajasthani tribal women haggling for bangles. In contrast, down the quiet back streets of the old city is a serene picture of blue houses.

    On Spice which airs on 29 April 2006 the Malabar Coast is home to the essential ingredients of every Indian meal- black pepper, cardamom, ginger and tea plantation. In the daily cardamom auctions, buyers and sellers converge in a spirited display of commerce.

    Mumbai takes centrestage on 6 May 2006. In Mumbai, the famed Dabbawallahs perform the daily ritual of getting thousands of home-cooked meals delivered to the right offices, landing them in the Guinness Book of Records. Viewers will also meet the city’s Dhobbis, who seem to wash the clothes of the entire city in a gigantic open laundry. Viewers end the journey with a feast of snack foods at Juhu’s nightly carnival on the sand.

    The episode on 13 May celebrates the frestival of Diwali which ends with a bang as fireworks light up the sky across the length and breadth of India. Huge quantities of sweets are consumed, tools and account books are prayed over, houses are decorated with colourful lanterns to guide passing gods and millions of gifts are exchanged in this explosion of divine fun.

    On Indian Offering on 20 May Vera explains how he has been inspired by the people and the food of India and provides an understanding of the spices that make up the myriad flavors he has enjoyed. Barry applies his imaginative touch to a selection of simple, tasty dishes that are deeply Indian at heart.

    Warner Bros. announces deals in Ireland, Bulgaria

    CANNES: Warner Bros., International Television Distribution has announced deals with Channel 6 in Ireland and Nova TV in Bulgaria.

    The new Irish network has taken a raft of drama and comedy series. Among the first-run series set to premiere on Channel 6 are The Closer, Related, Four Kings, and The New Adventures of Old Christine.

    Also, the channel has secured the free-TV rights to The Sopranos, The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Without a Trace.

    The studio has announced a multigenre deal with Nova TV in Bulgaria, that gives the broadcaster the exclusive free TV rights to a range of current and library features, television series and miniseries, and animation. Key titles include The Matrix Reloaded, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, as well as Invasion, Nip/Tuck and Joey.

    Discovery commissions new travel series ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’

    CANNES: Discovery Networks International, has commissioned a new lifestyle series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It is based on the popular series of travel guides, for launch on Discovery Travel & Living in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

    The 5×30-minute series will reach 147 million homes outside the U.S. when it launches this fall. The series is executive produced by Helen Veale for Outline Productions and Robert Curran for Discovery Networks International.

    Discovery Networks International executive VP of creative development and brand management Rebecca Batties said, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith goes beyond the standard travel series format to focus on luxury, style and design trends in some of the most inviting locales in the world. The series embodies the true essence of the Discovery Travel & Living brand as it encourages viewers to explore their world, imagine possibilities and live life to the fullest.”

    In each episode of the series, the co-creators of the books-Andrew Grahame and Juliet Kinsman-will investigate rural spa retreats, funky boutique hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and other sites in locations around the world to determine which deserve a place in the latest Mr. and Mrs. Smith guide.

    NHK-Japan, Discovery-Canada tie up for HD programming

    MUMBAI: NHK-Japan and Discovery channel Canada team up to leverage their shared high-definition (HD) programming, production, and distribution.

    The agreement will see each broadcaster’s existing science magazine show – Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet and NHK’s Science Zero – mutually benefit from exchanging footage and segments.

    Discovery Channel Canada president and general manager Paul Lewis said: “As leaders in factual programming, Discovery Channel continues to make great strides in high-definition content and technology in Canada, and this alliance with NHK fits our strategy perfectly.

    “We have enjoyed a relationship with NHK in recent years and we’re excited to see this agreement solidify our relationship and take it to the next level as partners, enabling us to work together on projects that will continue to benefit Discovery, NHK and the audiences we serve.”

    Besides collaborating on content, NHK & Discovery will regularly discuss and explore opportunities to work together on other areas of mutual interest, including new technologies and distribution in all media platforms.

    NHK’s Multimedia Development Department director general Yoshinori Sekimoto said, “NHK and Discovery Channel Canada share a passion for science programming and HD broadcasting. Taking our already-successful relationship to a higher level opens the door to exciting possibilities in terms of co-production, broadcasting and media strategy.”

    BVITV signs deals with Dubai TV for ‘Disney Club’ branded block

    CANNES: Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) has announced the launch of a new Disney branded block in the Middle East, with the conclusion of an agreement with free-to-air satellite broadcaster Dubai TV.

    This was announced by BVITV EMEA senior vice president sales and portfolio development Philippe Maigret and Dubai Media Inc CEO Hussain Lootah.

    This will significantly increase the presence of Disney-produced animation on TV in the Middle East, which will now have a potential reach of approximately 60 million households.

    Dubai TV’s new Disney Club block will run five days a week, for half hour each day excluding Thursdays and Fridays where it will run for one hour. The block will also include Kim Possible and Lilo & Stitch: The Series in its line-up. Dubai TV’s viewers will also be able to enjoy JoJo’s Circus and The Legend of Tarzan.

    BVITV’s vice president sales, French-speaking Europe and Middle East Florent Gaignault concluded the agreement with Ali Jaber of Dubai TV.

    Fox Reality acquires shows from outside the US

    CANNES: Fox Reality channel has announced a slate of new acquisitions at MipTV, taking on programs from the BBC, Endemol, Sony Pictures Television International and Eyeworks Distribution.

    Fox Reality CEO and GM David Lyle said, “We like to be innovative and introduce some classics and some of the most irreverent and entertaining reality shows from outside the U.S. to domestic audiences for whom these shows are new experiences.”

    From the BBC, the channel has secured five seasons of Castaway, seasons one and two of Driving School and three episodes of The Bronx Crime & Justice. Driving School follows a number of would-be drivers as they prepare to take their driving tests. In Castaway, a number of Britons are stranded on the remote Scottish Island of Taransay in the Hebrides. The Bronx Crime & Justice offers a look into the New York legal system.

    Through Endemol, Fox Reality has secured the rights to the controversial dating show There’s Something About Miriam, and with SPTI, it has taken the broadcast rights to the British (three seasons) and Australian (one season) of Dragon’s Den.
    And from Eyeworks, the channel acquired the ten-episode adventure reality Going Straight.

    MUMBAI: E-City Films will release this year’s Oscar nominated Hollywood Blockbuster The New World in India on 7 April. Directed by Terence Malick and inspired by the legend of John Smith and Pocahontas, the movie explores the story of love, loss and discovery, both a celebration and an elegy of the America that was and the America that was yet to come.
    The film was nominated for this year’s Oscar Awards for Best Achievement in Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki).

    Speaking on the release of the film, E-City Films chief executive officer Atul Goel said, ” The Multiplex revolution has paved way for the English movie market in India, which can be pegged at Rs.1 billion approx. We are looking at a 30 per cent growth in this business. It is an excellent business arena to broach upon.”
