Indonesian TV station stops WWE after mishap

MUMBAI: An Indonesian television station Lativi TV has stopped airing several wrestling programmes amid allegations that a nine-year-old boy may have been killed by children imitating the moves of their wrestling heroes.

Media reports state that the station pulled SmackDown and all other World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) programmes following weeks of pressure from parents and educators who said the shows encouraged violent behaviour in children. In India WWE action airs on Ten Sports.

Reza Fadillah died on 16 November in the Indonesia’s West Java city of Bandung -several weeks after three of his friends threw him to the ground and pinned him ‘SmackDown-style’.

His father, Herman Suratman, said that the boy’s X-rays showed internal chest wounds.

WWE has issued a statement saying that The chief of the Detective Bureau charged with investigating the highly suspicious nature of the child’s death specifically has stated in the media that there is no reason to believe the death of this child had anything to do with watching wrestling.

WWE says that it first learned on Thanksgiving Day of sketchy and incomplete information that a father of a child in Indonesia was attempting to blame WWE’s SmackDown program for the death of his child. Now it says that the chief of the Detective Bureau charged with investigating the highly suspicious nature of the child’s death specifically stated in the media that the accusations of the family could not be taken at face value and that there is no reason to believe the death of this child had anything to do with watching wrestling.

Indonesian Broadcasting Commission member Ade Armando was quoted in reports saying, “We have SmackDown posters, shirts, cards, and other things. It has become some kind of specific culture with its own community. If there is no television show, we assume those other things will lose audience. So our conclusion is stopping the show altogether. We will not tolerate its showing anytime.”

Suratman said, “Let my son be the last victim. This is a lesson, not only for Lativi and the government, but also for us parents to pay more attention to our children. In this era of multimedia, bad influences can easily reach our boys and girls.”

WWE meanwhile notes that unfortunately, this is not the first time that false allegations of this type have been used to deflect attention away from those directly responsible for the death of a child. It has urged caution in making such unsubstantiated, and now repudiated, statements, especially in light of the ongoing police investigation into the actual and true circumstances of this child’s death while in the custody of others.

The police noted an autopsy was forbidden by the child’s family for religious reasons. As a resultthe police have indicated in the mediathat because there is no permission to conduct the autopsy, they are currently asking for the child’s medical records from the hospital.

Although the death of any child is a tragedy, WWE says that it is confident that the investigative conclusions will be that the death of this child had nothing to do with WWE programming.

News Corp forms Fox Television Studios India; Deepak Segal is head

MUMBAI: Star India looks to be aiming to move a significant part of its production activities, particularly relating to format shows and advertiser funded programming (AFP), in house.

For that purpose, News Corp’s Fox Entertainment Group has set up a wholly owned subsidiary Fox Television Studios India Pvt Ltd (FTSI) and put Star India executive vice-president content and communication Deepak Segal in charge of leading it. Segal, who is currently “on deputation” to FTSI from Star, will officially move to the new company once it is fully operational. Segal summed up the broad logic of the move by News Corp as “backward integration”.

FTSI is setting up relevant infrastructure for creating channel, pre-production, production and post-production facilities for content and storage of content.

The format shows produced by FTSI will have a mix of product developed in India as well as those licensed from abroad and adapted for telecast in India, Segal reveals.

According to Segal, while FTSI’s focus is on formats and AFPs, his team is working on a narrative show as well. Queried as to when any of these shows were expected to go on air, Segal said it would only be in the next fiscal. A point of note is that Star’s financial year is from 1 July to 30 June.

As regards the executive structure within Star following Segal’s departure, it will more or less follow the changes incorporated in July 2005 when new portfolios were created for Shailja Kejriwal as senior creative director – Star network and Harsh Rohatgi as GM – Star network.

While Kejriwal oversees programming and on-air promotions, Rohatgi is responsible for broadcast operations, network planning and presentation.

About the only change in terms of functionality would be that Channel [V] head honcho Amar Deb, who used to report to Segal, now reports directly in to Star Entertainment India CEO Sameer Nair.

Meeting secretly with a small group of students who name themselves “Dumbledore’s Army,” Harry teaches them how to defend themselves against the Dark Arts, preparing the courageous young wizards for the extraordinary battle that lies ahead.

  • Ratings: Star Movies maintains edge over HBO; Discovery gains ground

Ratings: Star Movies maintains edge over HBO; Discovery gains ground

MUMBAI: The English entertainment scene has been undergoing a few changes. Until recently HBO was off the air waves in Mumbai for several weeks. Arch rival Star Movies continues to be off air.

Tam data SEC A,B 15+ has thrown up some interesting findings. The period is 1 September – 1 November 2006.

At an all India level Tam data shows that Star Movies has seven of the top nine English films. Creature features and martial arts films not surprisingly continue to do well. King Kong and The Way Of The Dragon on Star Movies got TVRs of 0.34 and 0.31. Enter The Dragon on HBO got a TVR of 0.31.

Data also shows that the blackout in Mumbai benefitted Pix and Zee Studio. When you just look at the six Metros Pix has two films in the top 10. At number three it has Bicentennial Man which got a TVR of 0.38. Men In Black rated 0.3. This shows two things. Firstly Mumbai is a very important market for English films. Secondly it lays some credence to Pix’s philosophy that if one has films with good stories no matter when they were made viewers will watch them. Interestingly none of the films in the top 10 whether one looks at the Metros or all India are premieres. Zee Studio also figures in the top 10 at the metro level. It got a TVR of 0.29 for Shaolin Temple.

If you look at primetime shares 8-11 pm for all the English channels – movies, general entertainment, infotainment one sees that Star Movies and HBO’s shares have gone down partly due to the Mumbai blackout. Star Movies for the period last year had a share of 23. Now it has a share of 17 for all India and 16 for the six Metros. HBO’s share has gone down from 18 per cent to 13 per cent at an all India level. For six Metros there has been a fall from 17 per cent to 11 per cent.

Pix though it launched recently is neck and neck with Zee Studio. Zee Studio it must be pointed out has doubled its share from three last year to six per cent. Pix does better than Zee Studio when one looks at the Metros. It has a share of eight. At an all India level it has a share of four per cent.

The biggest gainer by far is Discovery. At the all India level it has a share of 18 per cent versus 14 per cent for the same period last year. This is the most for any channel. At a Metro level it has a share of 16 per cent versus 10 per cent last year. Discovery’s gain would appear to be arch rival National Geographic Channel’s (NGC) loss. Last year for the period NGC’s share was 14 per cent for the six Metros. This time it is eight per cent. Discovery Travel and Living’s (DTL) share has also gone down from seven per cent to five per cent. At the all India level the shares of NGC and DTL are flat at 13 per cent and four per cent respectively. Animal Planet’s share has also stayed the same at eight per cent for the Metros and 10 per cent for all India.

The History Channel had undergone a repositioning. It is now an entertainment channel with the tagline Live The Story. It shows films, miniseries etc. However its share has only grown marginally from four per cent at an all India level to five per cent. In the Metros its share is flat at three per cent. Its share is comparable to Star World with whom it is now looking to compete for both ad revenues and viewership. Star World has a share of three per cent all India and five per cent in the metros.

Zee Cafe has shown some improvement. Its share grew from one per cent last year to three per cent this year for the Metros and two per cent at an all India level. The English general entertainment channels all have some work to do to catch up with AXN. The action oriented broadcaster has held steady with shares of nine and 10 per cent at an all India and the six Metro level respectively. No doubt initiatives like the ongoing Amazing Race Asia help viewers to keep going back.

  • News Corp cancels OJ Simpson book, TV special

News Corp cancels OJ Simpson book, TV special

MUMBAI: As a result of pressure from different quarters US media conglomerate News Corporation Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch has announced that the company has cancelled publication of the book If I Did It as well as the special which was to air on Fox.

This was to have featured O.J. Simpson. In 1995 Simpson was acquitted of the murders of his wife and another man in 1995. The cancelled project was to have had him talk about how he would have done the murders.

Murdoch said, “I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project. We are sorry for any pain this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown-Simpson.”

Besides the victims’ families opposition came from viewers, station affiliates, advertisers, booksellers and even executives within the company. Reports state that over a dozen of Fox’s roughly 200 affiliates across the US had rejected the show and News Corp had received indications that more were likely to follow.

Simpson was acquitted of murder charges in 1995, but a civil court found him liable for their deaths in 1997 and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages.

He says, “This is about creating a new kind of entertainment experience that couldnt exist in a non-interactive medium. We will be trying new things and taking risks in the process of developing great Internet comedy.”

This Just In is an extension of HBO’s commitment to comedy and recognition that many of the most interesting things happening in comedy today are originating on the Internet. Content from the site may also be used across multiple platforms including HBO, HBO multiplex channels, HBO On Demand and HBO Mobile.
