Sony Pix goes big on social media and promotions

MUMBAI: In the genre of English movies in India, nine players have been vying aggressively for a larger market share and online presence. One amongst these nine is Sony Pix. Read on about its efforts which include innovative micro properties on Facebook and giving out ‘money can’t buy merchandise.’

The channel has been following a three point strategy since 2012. Sony Pix and AXN EVP and business head Saurabh Yagnik explains, “We began by investing in quality content. We then wanted to build a stronger perception and thirdly we wanted to innovate to break the clutter.”

Firstly, the channel invested in content by tying up with MGM. It bought the Bond franchise for three years including Sky Fall. Along the way, Pix had a makeover in late 2013 changing its previous tagline ‘Hollywood is Here’ to its current one ‘Stay Amazed’. The identity was unveiled with the world premiere of Skyfall in October 2013.

It also premiered Men in Black 3 and The Amazing Spider Man. During the MIB3 premiere, Pix had launched an anti-alien day, where the channel said that eliminating various kinds of aliens from society was the need of the hour. Hash tags were displayed on the TV screen during the premiere, encouraging people to tweet. At that time, Yagnik had said that the initiative had trended through the day at number one and two in India and worldwide at number four. Similarly, with The Amazing Spiderman, Pix pitched the campaign around the amazing people in every person’s life, creating a web of amazing characters and stars.

Earlier, the channel had also created ‘Premiere PIXathon’ where four back to back movies were premiered on a single day. “We chose movies that had four big stars, or spoke about Hollywood’s four big stars and what makes them click with the audience, four big cricketers and their achievements, and with this, we used the message of the ‘power of four’ for our big Premiere Pixathon,” Yagnik had said at that time.

For 2014, the lineup includes Captain Phillips, The Hobbit: Desolation of the Smaug, The Amazing Spider Man 2 and Hercules.

Next, to build a stronger perception, the channel started ‘Pix Premiere Nights’ on Facebook to give viewers an opportunity to watch a movie a day before it is actually released in India. Winners are chosen on the basis of a contest. In all, 2,200 winners across 10 cities will be provided passes to watch a mega movie on 11 screens. To facilitate the winner’s attendance, a special helpdesk has been set up. So far the contest has been held for Robocop, Spiderman 2 and The Hobbit.  Next in line is The Expendables 3. As reported earlier by indiantelevision.com, one such initiative could cost the channel anywhere between Rs 2-3 crore.

Pix, which has more than two million followers on Facebook, according to Yagnik, decided to break from the clutter by creating micro properties on Facebook like: ‘Legendary Monday’ which has inspiring stories about celebrities; ‘Thoughtful Tuesday’ that is all about celebrity quotes; ‘Pixonomic Wednesday’ has box office collection facts while ‘Desi Thursday’ is a clash between Bollywood and Hollywood. ‘Superhero Friday’ includes all about action heroes while ‘Saturday Talks’ is about famous movie dialogues. The week culminates with ‘Gizmo Sunday’ which is all about gadgets.

The channel plans to announce breaking news about Hollywood through the re-launch of its animated character ‘Notty Pixy’ on Facebook. “She is a gossip reporter who provides Hollywood news first in India,” Yagnik says. He flips a well bound book to showcase a list of Hollywood stars, reporters, movies, events and websites that are the “sources” for ‘Notty Pixy’s’ news.

How has the three point strategy helped Pix?

Revealing TAM data, the channel says that during the first quarter (April 14 to June 14) Star Movies stood first with 19.80 per cent market share while Pix followed closely at the number two position with 19.30 per cent share. The difference was just 0.50 per cent. However, in the same quarter during the primetime slot, Sony Pix led the charts with a market share of 23.6 per cent with Star Movies a distant second having a market share of 17.90 per cent (TAM Market: All India 1 Mn+ TG CS 15+AB).

On Facebook, Pix has been leading the number one spot with 11.68 per cent engagement rate. Engagement includes likes, comments, shares and number of fans. In the second place is Movies Now with a 4.55 per cent engagement rate. Star Movies India and HBO India follow next with engagement rates of 3.35 per cent and 1.07 per cent respectively. Tonic Media is the digital agency that looks after these activities for Pix.

Sharing details about future plans of the channel, Yagnik says that the channel will provide its audience with ‘money can’t buy merchandise’. For example, viewers can win the blue t-shirt worn by Tom Hanks for the film Captain Phillips, which will be premiered on 27 July. Yagnik adds that the t-shirt comes with a certificate of authenticity. Soon thereafter, the blood stained shirt and tie worn by Jamie Foxx in the movie White House Down is up for grabs.

Yagnik revealed that Pix has been seeing revenue growth upwards of 25 per cent and is now available in HD on platforms like Dish TV, Hathway, Fastway and in Cable.

According to Maxus managing partner north and east region Navin Khemka “the channel is trying to use innovative ways to capture audiences. By giving out exclusive merchandises it will attract audiences who will participate in a genre that is fragmented. They key objective is to build loyalty for the channel and therefore is a good strategy.”

  • Bollywood’s three most dapper men spotted on Niranjan Iyengar’s ‘Look Who’s Talking’

Bollywood’s three most dapper men spotted on Niranjan Iyengar’s ‘Look Who’s Talking’

MUMBAI: Bollywood’s most eligible bachelors – Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor and Siddharth Malhotra were spotted on Niranjan Iyengar’s ALL ACCESS, ALL REVEALING talk show, Look Who’s Talking. Niranjan got them to open up and spill the beans on their love lives and a lot more! All three of them had quite interesting things to say. You can catch their interviews when the show makes its debut during the first week of August on Zee Café. Here’s a little glimpse of all the madness you can expect from Look Who’s Talking.

Karan Johar being his usual self as was quite upbeat, witty and humorous throughout his interview with Niranjan. Karan revealed his worries and fears. Quite a refreshing change from him prodding other celebs into answering his questions, don’t you think? He said that nothing frightens him anymore, not even death. However, growing old or dying alone scares him the most. Karan also went on to say that he has tried everything, to find his special someone but he cannot put himself out there like a prostitute. Trust Mr. Johar to find humor even in such situations in his own life!

Arjun Kapoor aka Fubu was his charming, naughty self on the show. Interestingly, a 140 kilo weighing Arjun’s inspiration to become fit was the idea of getting laid! More than the looks, Arjun is looking for someone who can keep him engaged in great conversations. Some prerequisites Arjun’s ideal woman must have – she has to be intellectual, have a great sense of humour, should play hard to get and most importantly, should be fond of kissing! Ladies, are you listening?

We all know Sidharth Malhotra as the hottie with the chiseled wash-board abs, but we hear that wasn’t the case while he was growing up. He opened up about his one true love in life – his love for food! Did you see that coming? Neither did we! Apparently, the Ek Villian star had a french-fry obsession as a child, that left him slightly on the chubby side. He recalls having them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We don’t know what made him lose all that weight, but we sure can thank god he did!

  • ‘The Leftovers’ to premiere exclusively on HBO Defined

‘The Leftovers’ to premiere exclusively on HBO Defined

MUMBAI: After the huge success of Game of Thrones Season 4, HBO is all set to treat Indian audiences to one of the most anticipated drama series titled THE LEFTOVERS. When 2% of the world’s population abruptly disappears without explanation, the world struggles to come to terms with what happened. With so many questions left unanswered, three years later, THE LEFTOVERS is the story of the people who didn’t make the cut. Premiering within a week of the US premiere, the new HBO Original Series THE LEFTOVERS debuts with its ten-episode first season on Sunday, July 6 at 7:45 pm, exclusively on HBO Defined, 100% ad-free, followed by other episodes on subsequent Sundays at 8:00 p.m.

This new HBO mysterious drama series has been created by Damon Lindel of (Emmy® winner for “Lost”) and acclaimed novelist Tom Perrotta (Academy Award® nominee for “Little Children”; “Election”).  The series premiere is directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), who also serves as executive producer of the series.

Based on Perrotta’s bestselling novel of the same name, THE LEFTOVERS is an original look at The Rapture…or was it The Rapture at all? Set in a small New York suburb, the intimate family drama focuses on the residents of the fictional town of Mapleton, whose preconceptions are shattered in the wake of a global event dubbed “The Sudden Departure.” Three years after the fateful day when 140 million people disappeared without a trace, the series focuses on the ways ordinary people react to inexplicable events that can unite or divide families and communities, examining how their untold grief and the strain of an unprecedented calamity can turn faith into cynicism, paranoia, madness or cult-like fanaticism.

At the heart of THE LEFTOVERS is the Garvey family. Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), the town’s beleaguered chief of police and father of two, is trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy when the notion no longer applies. While Kevin and his rebellious daughter, Jill (Margaret Qualley), try to go back to the way things used to be, Kevin’s son, Tom (Chris Zylka), sees the event as a wakeup call to take action. At the same time, Kevin is faced with the conflict between the townspeople of Mapleton and the Guilty Remnant, a mysterious cult-like group that seems to offer an escape for traumatized residents.

In addition to Theroux (“Mulholland Drive”; HBO’s “John Adams” and “Six Feet Under”), series regulars include: Amy Brenneman (“Private Practice”) as Laurie, a mother with a successful career who felt all she could do was surrender after the Departure; Christopher Eccleston (“28 Days Later”) as Reverend Matt Jamison, who thinks he knows exactly what the Departure was and wasn’t, and is committed to renewing the town’s faith; Liv Tyler (“The Lord of the Rings”) as Meg, who has serious doubts about her impending wedding; Chris Zylka (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) as Tom Garvey; Margaret Qualley as Jill Garvey; Carrie Coon (“Gone Girl”) as Nora Durst, who lost her entire family in the Departure; Emily Meade (HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”) as Aimee, Jill’s friend and the big sister she never had; Amanda Warren (“The Adjustment Bureau”) as Mayor Lucy Warburton; Ann Dowd (HBO’s “True Detective”) as Patti, a Guilty Remnant leader; Michael Gaston (“The Mentalist”) as Dean, a stranger who could be Kevin’s greatest ally, or a force to be reckoned with; Max and Charlie Carver (“Teen Wolf”) as Adam and Scott Frost, twins who forge a friendship with Jill and Aimee; and Annie Q (“The Rewrite”) as Christine, a follower of Holy Wayne and object of Tom’s interest.

The executive producers of THE LEFTOVERS are Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta along with Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey while Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger are co-executive producers of the show, with Lindelof serves as showrunner. The series is produced for HBO by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Premiering within a week of its US premiere, the first season of THE LEFTOVERS airs in India on Sunday, July 6 at 7:45pm on HBO Defined. HBO Defined presents a 100% Ad-Free experience for viewing back to back episodes of THE LEFTOVERS – season 1 in HD quality and Dolby surround sound. Be prepared to get hooked to this highly anticipated drama series!
