Zee greenlights Rs 2,237 crore promoter fund infusion to beef up content and tech push

MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises has flipped the script on its growth journey, approving a Rs 2,237.44 crore promoter fund infusion via fully convertible warrants. The board on Sunday greenlit the preferential issuance of 16,95,03,400 warrants to promoter group entities at Rs 132 apiece — Rs 3.42 above the SEBI-regulated price of Rs 128.58 — as the company races ahead on its mission to become a content and technology powerhouse.

The move follows a double-header board session where investment bank J.P. Morgan briefed directors on strategic alternatives and market sentiment around the media giant’s stock. The consensus was loud and clear — Zee needed to power up its war chest to tap new opportunities, navigate headwinds, and double down on next-gen entertainment.

“The Board has deliberated upon the various alternatives discussed with J.P. Morgan and has conducted a thorough evaluation of the Company’s growth plans. The Board believes that the steps being implemented to enhance the promoter shareholding will ensure their added motivation to work in line with the enhanced business plan”, said Zee chairman R. Gopalan.

Promoters had first expressed their intent to hike stake on 1 May, when the stock was at Rs 106.35. Now, they’ve committed to the higher Rs 132 price, which will raise their holding to 18.39 per cent, pending shareholder approval.

“The promoters submitted their desire to enhance their shareholding to the Board on 1 May 2025 when the stock price was at Rs. 106.35, however, they are committed to the company and its business even at this higher price”, added Shubham Shree, on behalf of the promoter group.

Zee has been steadily bolstering its portfolio with action-oriented steps, including the incorporation of three wholly owned subsidiaries and a strategic investment in Bullet — a micro-drama app aimed at younger audiences. In May, it also uploaded a detailed investor presentation spotlighting its roadmap to blend compelling content with bleeding-edge tech.

The Board’s decision, it noted, would allow the company to buffer its balance sheet against shocks, while also fuelling innovation across its content ecosystem. With over 1.3 billion global viewers and a presence in 190+ countries, Zee has signalled that it’s not just adapting to the evolving M&E landscape — it’s gunning to lead it.

As India’s entertainment sector becomes more tech-infused and audience-savvy, Zee is positioning itself as both creator and disruptor, building experiences that are as scalable as they are sticky.

  • Balaji doubles down on digital as it reboots legacy storytelling for the OTT generation

Balaji doubles down on digital as it reboots legacy storytelling for the OTT generation

MUMBAI: Balaji Telefilms is throwing open the gates to a new era—one where saas, bahu and binge culture collide. The legacy studio, which helped script India’s television saga for over two decades, is rewriting the plot with a digital-first approach that spans OTT behemoths, Youtube Originals, and a mix of formats for India’s multi-screen audience.

Announced in May 2025, the company’s roadmap reveals a sharp shift toward platform-driven storytelling, tapping into newer demographics without leaving behind its loyal viewer base. Armed with genre-spanning originals and marquee talent, Balaji aims to straddle every screen—from phones in Patna to smart TVs in Pune.

“At Balaji, storytelling is in our DNA. For decades, we’ve created content that mirrors the aspirations, emotions, and realities of Indian audiences. Today, we’re embracing the digital era with the same passion, but through a renewed lens”, said GCRO Nitin Burman.

Burman added, “Balaji has always been at the forefront of innovation, and as we embark on this new phase of digital-first storytelling, our goal is to create content that resonates deeply, sparking emotional connections and cultural relevance”.

The proof lies in Balaji Digital’s slate. Early hits like Power of Paanch and Dus June Ki Raat on JioHotstar signalled intent. But it was Kull – The Legacy of the Raisingghs, featuring Nimrat Kaur and Ridhi Dogra, that cemented the studio’s OTT credibility. Balaji then made its Youtube Originals debut with The Great Indian Cricket Fan, a series celebrating cricket obsession with equal parts charm and chaos.

As for what’s next: the studio is cooking up more digital exclusives—both long and short-form—for OTT and Youtube, alongside a steady dose of television content (Bade Achhe Lagte Hain) and cinema (upcoming titles include Bhoot Bangla and VVAN – Force of the Forrest). With murmurs of a Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi comeback, Balaji isn’t just revisiting nostalgia—it’s remixing it for the scroll-happy generation.

From emotional depth to mass appeal, Balaji’s playbook is broadening while its roots stay firm. With this digital pivot, the studio is making one thing clear: it’s not chasing trends. It’s setting them.

  • Cyrus Broacha’s apology to Kapil Dev and the launch of ‘Bluntly Streaming’ podcast with Sumedha

Cyrus Broacha’s apology to Kapil Dev and the launch of ‘Bluntly Streaming’ podcast with Sumedha

Mumbai: Cyrus Broacha, the iconic talkative personality who has entertained audiences since the ’90s, was on top of his witty and sarcastic best in the debut episode of the brand-new podcast, “Bluntly Streaming.” Inside the cracking 21-minute of the episode hosted by Sumedha Malhotra, the original “Bakra Boy of India” offered an unexpected apology that set off a series of thumbs up for him on social media.

Broacha’s humor has always been known for its sharp wit and satirical edge. In the same spirit, his recent comparison of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, to an Indian politician left the twitter world rolling in laughter. This unusual pairing can only be Broacha’s brainchild 🙂 As candid as he can be, he also is compassionate and recounted how he once felt compelled to apologize to Kapil Dev, acknowledging that his words could be misinterpreted.

The incident belongs to a time when Cyrus’ Dad, the renowned lawyer Mr. Broacha, who he recently lost, had reprimanded him. He’d apparently warned Cyrus to stay away from insulting and demeaning a legend like Kapil Dev in any way whatsoever. The joke was supposed to be humorous and satirical, but Cyrus understood that it may have been misinterpreted by many people who saw it. “Mr. Kapil Dev’s contributions to cricket and his country are immense and they deserve nothing but respect from me and everyone else on this planet. I deeply regret any offence my comments may have caused.” He approached Kapil Dev.

The aftermath of the apology left fans and the media in suspense, appreciating his down to earth demeanour. Amidst all this, Broacha continued to do what he does best – making people laugh and scratch their heads. His most recent suggestion to shut down the internet for six months is just one of his many absurd propositions. And while some laughed, others seriously pondered its implications on modern life as a poignant point.

“Bluntly Streaming” is not digging out a controversy; it offers relief as a hilarious and insightful journey into the life and experiences of a true entertainment icon. In the debut episode, Broacha candidly discusses a range of topics, from his thoughts on Bigg Boss and how it wasn’t the bickerings but the foodie’s nightmare meals that made him lose weight

The conversation covers Broacha’s erstwhile weekly show, “The Week That Wasn’t,” that drew ire from politicians, his early days at MTV, his acting experiences, and humorous anecdotes from his career. He even touches upon topics like reality shows, Elon Musk’s influence on the world, and the addictive nature of smartphones. In summary, “Bluntly Streaming” promises to provide laughter and entertainment in every episode.

For those interested in a good dose of laughter and entertainment, “Bluntly Streaming” is a must-listen podcast. It’s hosted by Sumedha, who brings a fresh and candid perspective to the show with a new guest every time, pun at a time.
