  • Nokia opens its first design studio in India

MUMBAI / BANGALORE: Nokia has chosen India as the location for the first in a series of satellite design studios it plans to establish in design hot spots around the world, signaling the increasing impact the country is having on the development of mobile phones.

Established via a two-year partnership with the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, it will give Nokia designers and India‘s talented young designers the opportunity to work together on new design ideas for India and the global markets. This was announced at a press conference today.

Nokia‘s chief designer Alastair Curtis said, “India is a dynamic and inspiring place for designers with its diverse mix of cultures, traditions and colour. The new satellite studio will help us further develop our understanding of this vibrant country and to work more closely with its extremely talented designers.

“Reflecting India‘s status as one of the hottest countries for design right now I expect our work here to influence not only our thinking on new design trends and ideas for India, but also for many other markets around the world ” added Curtis.

The satellite studio will explore a range of design trends and themes including detailed research into color and material trends in India, mobile use of the internet in India and its implications for design, and examining innovative new features and uses for mobiles.

Run by a team of Nokia designers working with students at the Srishti School and established designers across India, it will also be a key destination for Nokia‘s global team to visit to share ideas and be inspired.

Srishti founder and director Geetha Narayanan said, “Nokia‘s investment reflects the growing importance of India‘s designers and the wealth of new talent being developed here. This studio gives the talent of tomorrow the opportunity to work with experienced Nokia designers from around the world. This exposure to world class designers in one of the fastest growing product category in the world will be a huge opportunity for the students in India”.

MUMBAI: To help distribute all of its 26 channels in high-definition (HD) television resolution, US broadcaster HBO has ordered Grass Valley HD cameras, servers, and routers from Thomson.

The Grass Valley cameras will be used in HBO’s digital production studios in New York City, and the servers and routers will be installed in HBO’s main playout facility.

HBO senior VP, broadcast operations and engineering Charles Cataldo says, “For HBO, moving to the automated K2-based distribution systems from Thomson has resulted in the development of an electronic workflow that has increased efficiencies and allowed us to put safeguards in place to ensure the reliable distribution or our programs.

“We wouldn’t trust our playout operations to anything but Grass Valley server technology because we’ve grown comfortable with the mission-critical 24/7 performance they provide. Moving to the new K2 server systems is the next logical step in our evolution to high definition.”

Thomson’s Broadcast and Professional Solutions business unit senior VP Jeff Rosica says, “Thomson has a long-standing relationship with HBO that has been very fruitful for both companies. • Linden Lab’s ‘Second Life’ bans online gambling

MUMBAI: Linden Lab founder of the popular ‘Second Life‘ virtual community has decided to stop allowing online gambling with immediate effect. It has declared that it will not accept any responsibility for any monetary losses incurred as a result.

A press statement from Linden Lab said, “Because there are a variety of conflicting gambling regulations around the world, we have chosen to restrict gambling in Second Life. Because this is an evolving area of law, we may continue to adjust and clarify this policy as we receive feedback from the community and from legal authorities or as new regulations, industry practices and technology solutions come into effect.”

In April, Second Life invited the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to review its policy on online gambling and offer guidance. It would appear that feedback from the Government agency was negative as Linden‘s new terms of service also state that the company will comply with all subpoenas from US law enforcement agencies demanding information.

“Linden Lab will actively enforce this policy,” said Linden’s press statement.

“If we discover gambling activities that violate the policy, we will remove all related objects from the inworld environment, may suspend or terminate the accounts of residents involved without refund or payment and may report any relevant details, including user information, to authorities and financial institutions.”

Second Life is an internet-based virtual world that uses a downloadable client program to enable its users, called ‘residents’, to interact with each other through motional avatars. These ‘residents’ can explore, meet other ‘residents’, socialise, participate in individual and group activities and create and trade items such as virtual properties and services.

While Linden‘s rules have always prohibited ‘illegal’ activity, this latest move may not go down well with Second Life gamblers who wager with Linden dollars. It will also curtail revenue earned by Linden from those who own casino-style islands in the game and contribute to Linden through currency fees and land rental.

  • Wikia to launch search engine that rivals Google, Yahoo

MUMBAI: Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is all set to foray into the search engine space. He is currently putting together a community-developed web search service that would rival search engines such as Google or Yahoo.

At software developers‘ conference in Portland, Oregon, the chairman of the California based Wikia said that his commercial start-up, Wikia has acquired web crawler Grub that will enable Wikia‘s forthcoming search service to scour the Web to index relevant sites.

Wikia has raised $14 million in outside financing, including its latest round of $10 million from Amazon.com, according to a regulatory filing by the company.

“If we can get good quality search results, I think it will really change the balance of power from the search companies back to the publishers. I could be wrong about this, but it seems to be the likely outcome,” said Wales.

Wikia has earlier helped in the setting up of Wikipedia-style sites on a diverse range of topics.

Open search is part of Wikia‘s broader push to promote the spread of free content publishing on the web. Wikia‘s objective will be to make editorial judgements of modern web-search systems more explicit in nature, since search engine giants like Google keep secret key details of how their search systems work to prevent spamming and for competitive reasons.
