  • India’s nonprofit sector lags in AI adoption, says new survey

India’s nonprofit sector lags in AI adoption, says new survey

Mumbai: As Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolutionises industries worldwide, India’s nonprofit sector finds itself at an early stage of AI adoption, with nearly 30 per cent of nonprofits yet to implement the technology, according to the India AI Readiness Report. Released by GivingTuesday Data Commons, the report offers insights into how 251 nonprofits across India are navigating AI’s transformative potential.

The survey identifies two distinct groups—early adopters and late adopters—based on AI usage. Larger, urban nonprofits dominate the early adopter category, leveraging tools like generative AI and expressing a keen interest in expanding AI applications. In contrast, smaller, rural-focused organisations often lack technical resources, limiting their AI adoption primarily to basic tools.

“This research is a critical benchmark in the efforts to ensure that the social sector is not left behind as AI becomes increasingly relevant. The India AI Readiness Report was developed as a supplement to the global study, focusing exclusively on insights from 251 organisations across the country. We hope this report will help anchor your decision making in relationship to AI, whether you’re a nonprofit considering how you compare to others in the AI adoption scale, a technology platform looking to better understand current nonprofit needs, an educator looking to develop resources for nonprofits, or a funder considering how to best support the sector’s AI adoption. By spotlighting India’s progress, we hope to spark further conversation around how to collectively approach AI adoption in the social sector and guide Indian nonprofits, funders, and stakeholders in their decision-making and collaborations,” said GivingTuesday, CEO, Asha Curran.

The report highlights that systemic challenges—knowledge gaps and limited infrastructure—are significant barriers to equitable AI adoption. Addressing these requires collaboration among philanthropy, technology, and the nonprofit sectors.

“This report highlights the nuances in current AI adoption and knowledge, and understanding these differences is integral to achieving equitable and beneficial AI adoption in the social sector. Addressing the systemic challenges of knowledge and infrastructure gaps, which are not unique to this technology, requires cross-sector collaboration among philanthropy, technology, nonprofit, and researchers. Collectively, identification of strategic and tactical use cases to move us from “how do we use” to “what do we need” will support an ecosystem that centres mission needs in the design, development, and governance for equitable outcomes,” added GivingTuesday, chief data officer, Woodrow Rosenbaum.

    Key Findings:

. Early Adopters: Representing organisations with robust data-use policies, cloud-based systems, and technical expertise, 60-80 per cent are eager to explore advanced AI applications.

. Late Adopters: Often resource-constrained, only about 10 per cent of these organisations show interest in future AI uses, with 40 per cent unsure of potential applications.

. Regional Insights: Western India leads in AI demand but has the lowest percentage of nonprofits employing technical staff.

With content consumption on the rise through 2024, and projected to keep increasing in the coming years, the demand for tools and technology that aid production is also on the rise. A fast-growing sector within content creation is video production. At the crossroads is QuickLink, the provider of video production and contribution solutions.

In an email interaction with Indiantelevision, a representative of the company spoke about QuickLink’s tools, its presence across various regions, its successful collaborations and its future plans. Below is an excerpt from the interview:

It has been 21 years since QuickLink was founded. Can you share the important milestones?

Since QuickLink was founded in May 2003, it has achieved significant milestones. QuickLink initially developed an encoder for the BBC and ABC to enhance its coverage of the Iraq War. In April 2014, a pivotal partnership with Microsoft resulted in the QuickLink TX (Skype TX), a solution that enabled high-quality Skype callers to seamlessly integrate into broadcast workflows. By early 2017, we introduced QuickLink Studio (now StudioCall), enhancing the professional experience for remote guests joining productions from any desktop or mobile device.

Later, in August 2017, QuickLink TX technology was awarded an Emmy for Technology & Engineering, solidifying its impact on the broadcast industry. Skype TX, adopted by over 10,000 broadcasters worldwide, has facilitated millions of minutes of high-quality Skype calls. QuickLink received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation in April 2018. To support its growing North American presence, we opened our first US office in Hackensack, New Jersey, in December 2020. This year, we launched StudioPro, a highly accessible video production platform, followed by StudioEdge, the world’s first multi-platform remote guest solution, launched at IBC Show 2024.

Can you tell us about your solutions for broadcasters, VFX studios, and production houses?

For VFX studios and production houses: StudioEdge and StudioPro serve as valuable tools for VFX studios, enabling them to produce content with remote talent or guests while maintaining high video and audio standards. These platforms simplify complex production requirements, making it easy to control and monitor remote feeds seamlessly.

What are your key market areas? Do you look at India as a market?

We have a strong presence across multiple sectors. StudioEdge caters primarily to broadcast and production industries, providing organisations with the means to create content cost-effectively and integrate varied technologies into a cohesive, easy-to-use remote guest platform. StudioPro finds applications in corporate, educational, governmental, and other sectors, allowing users to produce professional-quality, branded content with ease.

India has emerged as a substantial market for us, particularly with strong interest from television broadcasting and production companies eager to enhance guest interviews, simplify platform unification and boost content quality. QuickLink’s solutions are well-positioned to meet these needs in India.

Can you share more about the recent collaboration with ITV Studios on Saturday Night Takeaway?

Our StudioEdge powered remote production elements for ITV Studios’ Saturday Night Takeaway, one of the UK’s popular shows. StudioEdge enabled seamless, high-quality remote guest appearances and feeds throughout the show, providing efficient management and integration. The success of this collaboration has led to further projects with ITV Studios, including future major television events worldwide.

How was IBC and NAB for you? What other events are you exploring?

IBC and NAB (New York and Las Vegas) were tremendously successful for us, with StudioPro and StudioEdge receiving outstanding feedback. With a significant increase in revenue from operations and soaring net profits, the company has demonstrated its strength amid evolving market dynamics. The figures, as unveiled in its unaudited financial results, reflect both an impressive year-on-year performance and a dynamic expansion across key business segments.

For the quarter, Netlink Solutions’ total income surged by 130 per cent, reaching Rs 869.31 lakhs, compared to Rs 218.54 lakhs for the same period in 2023. This impressive rise is attributable to robust revenue contributions from its magazine/info media and treasury segments, positioning the company favorably against industry counterparts.

The half-year results further underscore the company’s financial momentum. Total revenue for the six months climbed to Rs 1,117.51 lakhs, a 130 per cent increase from the prior year’s Rs 484.72 lakhs. This growth was primarily propelled by the magazine/info media segment, which recorded a substantial rise in revenue, reaching Rs 636.15 lakhs in Q2 compared to last year’s Rs 24.04 lakhs. Additionally, the treasury segment maintained strong performance with revenues of Rs 255.70 lakhs in Q2, up from Rs 216.79 lakhs in the same period last year.

The impressive revenue growth translated into a significant uptick in profitability. Net profit for the quarter surged to Rs 636.17 lakhs, a notable increase from Rs 172.41 lakhs in Q2 of the previous year. The half-year figures reflect a similar trend, with net profit reaching Rs 806.78 lakhs, up from Rs 379.77 lakhs in the same period of 2023. This growth in profitability was bolstered by strategic cost management and efficient resource allocation across segments, leading to an elevated earnings per share (EPS) of Rs 25.15 for Q2.

On the balance sheet front, Netlink Solutions saw its total assets grow to Rs 3,608.34 lakhs as of September 2024, marking a solid expansion from Rs 2,050.76 lakhs a year ago. The company’s treasury assets, a major component of its financial assets, were instrumental in driving this growth, underscoring the company’s strategic focus on asset appreciation and capital efficiency.

The magazine/info media segment emerged as a clear leader, contributing Rs 594.09 lakhs to profit before tax in Q2 2024, a leap from Rs 11.43 lakhs in Q2 2023. Meanwhile, the treasury segment delivered Rs 253.03 lakhs in Q2 2024, demonstrating its continued role as a reliable revenue driver. However, the exhibition management segment remains an area of concern, with a recorded loss of Rs 3.75 lakhs in both Q2 2024 and Q2 2023, indicating potential challenges within this sector.

Netlink Solutions’ strong financial results underscore its strategic adaptability and robust operational efficiency. With rising revenues and a disciplined approach to cost management, the company is well-positioned for sustained growth. The impressive gains across its magazine/info media and treasury segments signal a promising outlook, while challenges within the exhibition management segment may necessitate further strategic review.
