  • It’s raining new NextGen TV sets & receivers at CES 2025

It’s raining new NextGen TV sets & receivers at CES 2025

MUMBAI: There is a lot of excitement in the US about NextGen TV or TV broadcasts based on the ATSC 3.0 standard.  With 76 per cent of U.S. households now able to receive the signals,  America’s local TV broadcasters are hailing the introduction of new ATSC 3.0 receivers that will first be shown at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The affordable options will add to consumer choice, from high-end NextGen TV sets to affordable accessories that can transform Android and Fire TV devices already in consumer homes.

“We are very excited about the expanded offerings from accessory device manufacturers for NextGen TV. The new low-cost Atlanta  DTH (ADTH) USB receiver, powered by Tolka, is built for existing Android and Fire TV televisions and will, at a very affordable price, expand the reach of NextGen TV into homes who already have those sets. ADTH is also about to introduce a new model that works without an internet connection and will be doing a software update for deployed ADTH devices to give them the same functionality. In addition, Zinwell is adding pause functionality to their accessory device, with an add-on hard disc drive. In 2025, RCA is also coming to market with two new NextGen TV sets that will join TV options already available from Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Hisense, and TCL,” said Pearl TV managing director Anne Schelle. “We congratulate all of the manufacturers who are selling thousands of receivers each day to consumers looking for the best possible video and audio quality from local stations.”

Pearl TV is a business organisation of US broadcast companies with a shared interest in exploring forward-looking broadcasting opportunities, including innovative ways of promoting local broadcast TV content and developing digital media and wireless platforms for the broadcast industry. Pearl’s membership, comprising more than 820 TV stations, includes eight of the largest broadcast companies in America: Cox Media group, Graham Media group, Gray Television, Hearst Television, Nexstar Media group, Sinclair Broadcast group, the E.W. Scripps, and Tegna.

Broadcasters are loading up new services with new features for NextGen TV viewers, including interactive gaming options that will be launched by GameLoop.

GameLoop TV launches next week in Las Vegas on local NextGen TV channel 3.2 and will bring gaming directly to viewers with no additional hardware or subscriptions required. At the heart of GameLoop’s innovation is the channel’s exciting “play now” feature, which allows NextGen TV viewers to instantly play games showcased on the channel simply using their TV remote or mobile phone.

“We also salute TV broadcasters Gray and Sinclair, who are working to bring fun, interactive gaming to the living room through GameLoop – a service that utilises NextGen TV for web-based family fun that will work seamlessly with millions of installed NextGen TV sets. Easy interactivity is literally going to be a game-changer for viewers,” Schelle predicted.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) functionality is now live on more than 200 local NextGen TV services throughout the US , with more being added to enhance viewing of key sports games and other spectacles.  Broadcasters are promoting the advantages of NextGen TV this sports season on stations throughout the country and plan to continue these promotions as they continue to rollout HDR and Dolby Atmos services nationwide.

A holiday promotion effort in NextGen TV markets that began before December continues through early February, with broadcasters now indicating onscreen to viewers when local NextGen TV programming is available in HDR.

“We’re very excited to announce that broadcast stations throughout the country are adding HDR10+ capability in their NextGen TV broadcast services to accommodate a broad array of TV manufacturers. With other flavors of HDR that also may be present in the service, this allows every receiver to present the best picture possible, showing that local television just keeps getting better and better, which is exactly what we promised with the rollout of NextGen TV services,” Schelle said. In addition to providing better video quality through HDR, many markets are adding Dolby Atmos audio coding, which delivers immersive audio capability.

“HDR began for sports with the Kentucky Derby last spring. It really made the Olympic Games pop with brilliant video. We know that sports is a big driver for buying new TV sets as well as for enjoying broadcast services — your favorite games look even better in High Dynamic Range,” Schelle said.

Throughout the country, local stations not already broadcast on over-the-air ATSC 3.0 transmissions are gaining access to NextGen TV viewers through the innovative addition of more channels through broadcast internet protocol – or broadcast IP. These additional channels are available as NextGen TV channels and have added more choices for viewers in a range of markets, from public to commercial broadcasters who now have their programming available for NextGen TV viewers.

Consumers can easily find details of what NextGen TV services are available in their markets by visiting WatchNextGenTV.com, a resource maintained by Pearl that lists individual services by market and a full range of more than 90 NextGen TV receivers and antenna products certified to work seamlessly with the new services.

  • The Necessity of Project Management

    The Necessity of Project Management

Project In Controlled Environments or PRINCE2 is a method of project management that helps in dividing larger projects into smaller sizes to make the stages more controllable and easier to manage. One can learn this method of project management through a PRINCE2 foundation and practitioner course. PRINCE 2 is a necessary course for anyone wanting to venture into project management. Project management is a necessary step taken by companies to ensure efficiency and punctuality for a project. There are several reasons why project management is implemented by a company.

    ● Strategic alignment-

Whenever a project is given by a customer, they will have certain demands that need to be fulfilled by the team. If the team doesn’t know the strategy of the customer, it will be impossible to create a project that will satisfy them. But the team itself has its own method and strategies for developing a project. The alignment of these two strategies is very important- the team needs to work on the project according to the principles and guides of the organization while also fulfilling the needs of the customer. This alignment can be made only through proper project management.

    ● Direction-

When a project is being worked on, it is quite natural that issues will arise during the process. To solve these issues, the team often diverts from the main objectives unconsciously. If that occurs, the end result will be different from what the clients originally might’ve wanted but project management stops this from happening. Project management is the planning of a project into structures which is referred to in every step of the process. Even if problems arise and the team diverts, with project management they will realign with the initial plan, making the end result satisfactory. One can learn the proper way of setting up this direction with a PRINCE2 foundation and practitioner course.

    ● Clear Objectives-

Project management details the project objectives and goals through a brief project description. It also makes a concise plan for the project development process which is followed from beginning to end. Without project management, these key elements are missing. The development team doesn’t have clear objectives that need to be met but have an idea about what the finished product needs to be. This can result in a lack of focus and haphazard methods of going about the project that takes a lot longer and is inefficient.

With the clear objectives provided by project management, there is accountability and structure in the development which is very important for a team.

    ● Overseeing-

With project management comes a project manager who oversees the whole process of development and they should join a PRINCE2 foundation and practitioner course. The job of a project manager is to ensure the development team is adhering to the objectives and plans and guide the team when they go astray from the planned path. They also help solve issues and maintain accountability so that the project is completed on time and is according to the demands of the client.

  • PallyCon adds App Security to its digital arsenal

PallyCon adds App Security to its digital arsenal

New Delhi: PallyCon, a global leader in Multi DRM, forensic watermarking services, and anti-piracy technology on Monday launched its state-of-the-art app security service.

A simple plug-n-play solution, it is dedicated to helping content developers and publishers protect their content from manipulation and theft. The solution is conceptualized with no single line of code and offers robust security that’s affordable, said the company.

INKA Entworks Inc, CEO and founder, James Sungim Ahn said, “With the increasing popularity and rise in viewership of OTT apps, the chances of theft and leakages have increased multiple times. It takes a lot of effort and money to produce content, and illegal access and copying are causing significant revenue losses. Hence, data security should be considered mandatory, and all content creators should adopt a 360-degree security along with DRM service for OTT apps to protect their investment”.

The solution offers a real-time threat analytics dashboard for content creators to trace the source of piracy and hacking of streaming content in real-time. It works in tandem with a high-performing DRM video protection service to identify leakages right to the last user who leaks or consumes the content illegally, thus offering endless scalable security.

Discussing the potential of the service, INKA Entworks Inc, head of global business, Govindraj Basatwar said, “Cyber-attacks against OTT apps and content creators are on the rise. Without adequate security, apps can be easily hacked, which poses a threat to the privacy of data, revenue and puts the brand image at risk too. With this launch, we aim to create a fearless and thriving environment for all content creators and protect their data from potential threats,” he added.

With new security standards set by Hollywood studios, it becomes critical for OTT platforms to protect their apps in runtime. The solution supports Android, iOS, and other hybrid apps.

  • Mobile World Congress to go ahead in June as planned

Mobile World Congress to go ahead in June as planned

New Delhi: Spanish authorities have given the green signal to conduct this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) as per plans in Barcelona from 28 June to 01 July. The decision was made after the authorities reviewed the health and safety plans put forward by the organizers for the upcoming event.

Touted to be the biggest annual gathering in the telecom industry, MWC will be the first one of the first big technology conferences staged in Europe since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 edition of MWC was canceled due to the Covid scare, and this year, organizers have left no stones unturned by ensuring all safety measures to conduct the event.

During the pre-pandemic times, MWC typically attracted around one lakh attendees every year where telecom companies showed off their latest products and executives met to carry out various deals. This year, the event will be conducted both physically and virtually, but in-person attendance will not be as high when compared to previous years.

GSMA, the industry association that hosts the congress, revealed that 70 per cent of the roughly 600 speakers at the conference will be physically present at the event. However, several companies like Nokia, Samsung, Ericsson, and Cisco have pulled out from attending the event in person citing pandemic scare, some of them have expressed their interest in attending the event virtually.

“When we speak to the exhibitors, some are very hesitant, while some are saying we are not coming as we have a travel policy, and some are saying that we normally send 250 people, we are just going to send five. But, those five are the right people, it is the CEO, or the CTO, or the CFO,” said GSMA director general Mats Granryd, Reuters reports.

  • LG showcases next gen products at CES 2021

LG showcases next gen products at CES 2021

SEOUL: LG Electronics is showcasing its products and technologies under the theme of ‘Display, now the real world comes to you’ at CES 2021. The company is emphasising on the redefined role of displays in the contactless era as well as presenting various display solutions optimised for the lifestyle of customers during CES.

LG Display is presenting cutting-edge display products through 11 lifestyle theme zones organised to not only demonstrate the excellent picture quality of OLED displays but also to introduce how displays can provide solutions for upgraded and more convenient lives. By doing so, the company will highlight three values of displays, which are ‘Natural Reality’, ‘Lifestyle in Harmony’, and ‘Better for People’. Furthermore, the company stresses the role of a ‘display that cares about people’ by showing functions that are safer and designed to protect users’ health.

LG Display’s new 77-inch OLED display shows significant progress in picture quality through newly developed and highly efficient materials as well as the addition of a layer to the display, thereby improving its efficiency by around 20 per cent. Higher efficiency means that the display improves its brightness to realize more vivid images.

LG Display is planning to apply its advanced next-generation OLED technology to high-end TV models that will be launched this year and gradually expand its adoption. In addition, the company is set to strengthen its lineup by producing 83-inch and 42-inch OLED TV displays starting this year, adding to the existing 88-inch, 77-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch, and 48-inch OLED TV displays. It also plans to significantly expand its mid-range TV display lineup down to the 20-30-inch range, enhancing not only TV, but also gaming, mobility, and personal display options.

It will also introduce differentiated products such as film cinematic sound OLED (Film CSO), which is able to feature an even slimmer design and to generate sound directly from the screen without separate speakers.

While 200,000 displays were shipped during the first year of OLED TV production in 2013, the number of units shipped reached 4.5 million last year, and LG Display plans to expand that to between 7 and 8 million displays this year to solidify its competitive advantage in the next-generation TV market and accelerate the OLED trend.

“Through the evolution of OLED, LG Display will expand its differentiated competitiveness and market dominance in premium TV markets,” said LG Display executive VP and head of the TV business unit Chang-ho Oh.

The company will also demonstrate a variety of professional display products for monitors and laptops, ranging from 15.6-inch to 27-inch to 31.5-inch displays. These are premium IT products incorporating high-definition IPS LCD technology, which has been recognised as being comfortable for the viewer’s eyes.

The Smart Home Zone will feature a bed with a 55-inch transparent OLED named Smart Bed, which you can use to check weather information or watch movies. At the push of a button, the Smart Bed’s 55-inch Transparent OLED display rises from its frame to show information or TV contents in various screen ratios without compromising its clear image quality. The Smart Bed display’s movable frame can easily be taken to various locations in a house to serve the diverse needs of users.

The Game Zone will present the best gaming environment, providing the ultimate sense of realism with visual immersion and vivid sound through LG Display’s 48-inch bendable cinematic sound OLED (CSO) gaming TV, which is being unveiled for the first time in the world. It can be turned into a flat screen while watching TV or used as a curved screen while gaming for an extreme immersive viewing experience. With the company’s CSO technology, this OLED display vibrates and makes its own sound without the use of speakers.

Moreover, LG Display is proposing a new display concept needed for consumers in the contactless era caused by Covid2019. The Restaurant Zone will recreate a sushi bar environment, in which a 55-inch transparent OLED and a 23.1-inch in-touch display are installed in the space between customers and chefs, allowing menu checking and ordering to be easily done via these displays.

In the case of the Metro Zone, it will give passengers the chance to check route maps or weather and regional information on a 55-inch Transparent OLED display installed on a subway train’s windows, while they will still be able to enjoy the view outside with high transparency.

The Retail Zone will also introduce 29-inch and 23.1-inch in-touch products, making it convenient to order and pay in a contactless environment at various consumer stores.

  • Synamedia partners with Akamai to speed up pirate takedowns

Synamedia partners with Akamai to speed up pirate takedowns

KOLKATA: Independent video software provider Synamedia has integrated its security and watermarking solutions with Akamai to protect customers’ streaming OTT content.

Synamedia’s solutions now detect and disrupt pirate streams in real time over the Akamai Intelligent Edge Platform and redirect viewers to legitimate services. The integration of Synamedia’s Streaming Piracy Disruption (SPD) managed service with Akamai’s platform gives rights holders and content owners an added layer of anti-piracy enforcement and revenue protection.

The digital and OTT streaming industry has expressed concerns over the epidemic of piracy, which has only grown more widespread and resilient over the past year as demand for content shot up with people cooped up in their homes and production and cinema halls shut down. The collaboration between Synamedia and Akamai is aimed at dealing a decisive blow to pirates who engage in broadcast content theft.

Taking advantage of Synamedia’s intelligence-first security approach, Synamedia EverGuard  counter-piracy operations center predicts which client devices will be used by pirates to leak content and determines the effectiveness of different actions, including quarantining agents and prosecution, to cause maximum pain. SPD uses resilient watermark injection and verification technologies as well as smart agents embedded in the headend and client devices to deliver the industry’s most comprehensive end-to-end solution.

“When illegal streams are disrupted, particularly during live sports, viewers tend to give up on pirated streams and switch to legal services. Akamai’s platform is used by many of our pay-TV and OTT customers and this integration will strengthen their ability to combat piracy at speed and scale,” Security Synamedia senior vice president Yael Fainaro said.

Akamai media product management Amit Kasturia explained the network’s scalable and secure edge watermarking integrations are intended to help customers identify pirates’ attempts to capture content and minimise illegal distribution. “The seamless integration of Synamedia’s intelligence-led security solutions with our platform can offer customers a quicker way of shutting down illegal streams, which is critical for the success of streaming rights for live sports,” he added.

Synamedia is now a member of Akamai’s Media Technology Partner program. The program is designed to foster interoperability, and referral agreements between Akamai and best-of-breed third-party solutions providers to give customers a range of options in selecting workflow components that work seamlessly with Akamai solutions deployed on its platform.

Synamedia has 30+ years’ experience in video security solutions, and developed the longest unhacked solution on the market. Since its inception, Synamedia’s operational security team has brought many criminals to the attention of law enforcement officials. Synamedia protects approximately $70 billion in operator revenues every year.
