Guest column: CEO of the Year Rajiv Bakshi shares his learnings

MUMBAI: Over the past few years, young executives and management students have reached out asking for advice on how to plan a successful and rewarding career. I am no certified expert, and I am still striving, grasping and improving each day; but I think I should share some learnings from my career. Hopefully, they come in good use in your journey.

Starting off as a young management trainee in 1999 to being awarded the CEO of the Year has been a fulfilling ride, packed with opportunities, surprises, failures and joy. In the first of the series (this is me being blatantly hopeful), seven notes for early stage professionals:

    1.    Do the small things perfectly, and primed for the big day: We are all excited and eager to lead the top initiatives of the company, often not realising that we are not yet prepared for it. The best use of your time would be to execute your daily tasks, however small and insignificant, with perfection. It will build the right attitude and character, and will lead you to scale high performance benchmarks. When you take over the big project, you should be 110 per cent ready.

    2.    Relax, you are not so important: Too much time is spent worrying about the reaction, perception or consequence of actions. In doing so, authenticity is sacrificed and opportunities are passed over. Every action will lead to a reaction. Chill and give your honest best to every task. Be consistent with your approach. Don’t self-judge, enough people will be doing it for you.

    3.    Break the Rules: Rules are often expectation benchmarks basis the past experience. In a dramatic and disruptive environment, how far can you go if just you adhere to the done and dusted rules. Remember, break the rules, not the law or trust. Take bold risks.

    4.    Only thing finite is time, use it well! You will not be 25 again. Most of the events may never get repeated. There is no undo button in life. The 1 per cent achievers have used time well. Plan your year, month, week and day as well as you can.

    5.    Be proud to be different: Let that be the biggest risk you take! We are all distinct. Our life paths have been unique. Our circumstances are contrasted. However, our goals and aspirations are quite similar. To realise them, don’t try to merge with the crowd. It reminds of something I read many years back, “we all want to go to heaven, but none of us want to die.” If you want to stand out in a group, you will have to do better than wear neon yellow. Let the real you shine up in the room. Be authentic and be proud of it. The world is craving for diversity. You will be helping their cause.

    6.    Life is a continuous trade off: Be ready to sacrifice! I learnt this from my HBS professor Sunil Gupta. Trade off. It’s a core ingredient in defining corporate and brand strategy. Wanting it all is a sure route for stress and anxiety. I am not suggesting that you have to ignore the important tasks, people and goals, except that you will have to learn to prioritise. Train your mind to be able to make those tough decisions, be it in personal or professional lives, especially when they come in conflict. What is more critical for your overall well-being and aspirations is a personal choice. Make that choice, and stand firmly by it.

    7.    It’s the companion, and neither the journey nor the destination that you enjoy most: When you commence a long journey – colleagues, friends and family will be your biggest asset. Value them and their contribution. Surround yourself with a group of well-wishers, critics, coaches and role models. Riding alone is quite a boring affair. There is no joy is reaching a destination alone. Even scaling the Everest is a group expedition.

  • Five of the Best Netflix Tips in 2021

Five of the Best Netflix Tips in 2021

With 203 million subscribers around the globe and around 2 million in India alone, it’s fair to say that Netflix is one of the world’s most popular streaming services. If you’re one of their fans, you might be wondering how you can get more for your subscription fee.

To help you out, here at five of the best Netflix tips in 2021, for your viewing pleasure!

    1. Travel the world via Netflix

Have you heard that with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service, you can access Netflix content from other countries? Well, you definitely can! If you’re wondering how to use a Netflix VPN, it’s really simple:

    ●    Choose a high-quality, paid VPN service
    ●    Download the VPN app to your device
    ●    Open the VPN app and choose a server (pick the UK if you want to watch UK Netflix, or Canada if you’d like to watch Canadian Netflix and so on)
    ●    Open Netflix and discover a world of content

Because VPNs mask your true IP address, you can self-select where in the world your “location” is.

    2. Add IMDb ratings to Netflix

Quickly and easily see what rating the IMDb has given a movie or show on Netflix by adding the IMDb Ratings extension. With this browser add-on, the review site’s ratings for each piece of Netflix content appear on the Netflix platform, you don’t need to open a new page and search for reviews. There’s a version for the Chrome and Firefox browsers, too.

    3. Download content for later

Did you know that you can download content to your device for a set period of time so that you can watch offline? It’s handy for commutes, long train rides, and those times when you’re in a no-WiFi zone.

Look for the download icon on content then push it to start your download. Access your offline content by heading to the My Downloads page on Netflix.

    4. Can’t decide? Try Shuffle Play

Ever find that you simply cannot decide what to watch? Try Netflix’s Shuffle Play feature. Instead of you actively choosing a title, the service will play something for you based on your watch history and liked titles. Of course, you may not like what Netflix chooses, but it’s always worth a shot if you’re stuck for inspiration!

    5. Remove non-paying watchers

We all know that one person who never pays for any streaming services, preferring to use other peoples’ passwords instead. If you’ve given your Netflix password to a few people and you suspect there are more than a couple of hangers-on, remove them from your account by heading to My Account then Sign out of all devices.

We hope these Netflix tips help enhance your streaming experience in 2021, happy viewing!

  • Stuck with Rs. 1 Crore Life Cover? You Need to Know This

Stuck with Rs. 1 Crore Life Cover? You Need to Know This

Life insurance has become a necessity in life, especially during the COVID19 pandemic. Keeping that in mind, people rush towards the nearest insurance company’s office or look for suitable types of insurance plans online. In any case, if there is one thing that almost every such individual witness, it is ‘a sum assured of Rs. 1 crore.’

You can easily find this number advertised through various mediums or highlighted in bold when you use online life insurance calculators. Indeed, Rs. 1 crore is a significant amount, and backing your family’s financial security with it can make a big difference in their lives. For instance, if you buy a pure term plan with a sum assured of Rs. 1 crore, the policy nominee will get this amount in case of your untimely demise. This could help the family members plan for their financial well-being without facing a burden. Similarly, you can get this amount back by choosing a term plan with a return of premium option.

At this point, many people ask a common question – ‘Is Rs. 1 crore the only option of sum assured we can select?’

This is not true. There are various options available at the time of buying life insurance. A mere glimpse of an online life insurance calculator can tell you what these options are.

The next important question that comes up – ‘How much sum assured should you choose?’

It is time for you to look at various factors before selecting a sum assured.

    1. Your Specific Needs

Everyone should indeed invest in a life cover. But this does not mean people need to choose the same sum assured under their life insurance policies.
Before making the selection of sum assured, you must consider your financial contribution towards the family income and well-being of your dependents. In case you are the only earning individual in the family, there would not be any other source that your loved ones can depend on except your total income.

A clear idea of these expenses along with existing debts, if any, can help you decide how much sum assured you should choose. Even using a life insurance calculator is to be considered the next step after need analysis.

    2. Your Total Income

Whether you are a salaried or running a business, you would agree that regular income equals the day-to-day expenses for most individuals. It is one reason why they need to think twice about making an additional investment or fulfilling a sudden, unexpected expense.

Buying a life insurance plan also means taking the responsibility to pay its premium on time to get its benefits. Your affordability to pay the premium for the chosen policy term does matter in selecting a sum assured.

Before you purchase any type of insurance, check if it will be easier for you to include the premium in your budget. Use an online life insurance calculator to know how the premium varies with sum assured. As said above, there is no such bound to select the sum assured of Rs. 1 crore only. Choose it only if it feels suitable for your needs.

    3. Your Current Life Stage

As you grow old, you will pass through different life stages, each of which requires you to plan for things differently. For instance, if you have recently started the career and other family members are not financially dependent on you, you look at life-planning from a different perspective. However, on getting married and have kids, you will get more responsibilities to handle over time. Accordingly, life goals will change, as well.

The selection of sum assured under a life insurance plan should also be based on the current life stage and goals you may have in mind. Think of it as a crucial part of investment planning in life. Plan for the amount you would need after a certain time and how a life insurance plan can help you achieve that. Use life insurance calculators to arrive at a premium-sum assured combination that is most suitable for you.

Benefits of Using Online Life Insurance Calculators

Next to considering the factors mentioned above, comes the crucial steps of getting a premium estimate online. There are several benefits that you can avail of by using life insurance calculators.

    – You can select a specific sum assured and see how the premium varies as per the age parameter.

    – You can check the premium variation on changing the policy period, keeping both the sum assured and age same in their respective fields. In case the premium does not seem to fit into your budget, you can increase the policy tenure and spread it over an extended period.

    – You can assess the benefits of opting for limited pay or regular pay options while buying life insurance plans.

So, make sure you utilize online life insurance calculators to the fullest and get a life cover that strikes the right chords in various spheres of your life.

  • What’s the tax for online gambling?

What’s the tax for online gambling?

As the deadline for filing income tax returns in India looms closer, many people are rushing to file their ITRs this month. The Central government has extended the deadline to December 31, 2020, and all taxpayers—yes, even online gambling players—need to submit their forms by that date, or a hefty fine awaits them. This doesn't include players who gambles at off-shore casinos such as a 10Cric Casino.

Tax on online gambling wins in India—what’s the rule?

India’s tax rules covering gambling—both for land-based venues and online casinos—are still unclear. The outdated Public Gaming Act of 1867 sets up the foundation of gambling levy requirements and categories; however, there are several legislative acts that also serve as the basis of the Indian gambling taxation.

Section 115BB of the Income Tax Act of 1961, which regulates the income tax of India, specifies that any winnings from lotteries, crossword puzzles, race betting, card games such as Andar Bahar, Teen Patti and online rummy and other games, as well as gambling or betting of any form or nature is taxed at a flat rate of 30%.

This tax rule is applied to all online gambling winnings regardless of an individual’s total income, and no exemptions are made.

Reputable online gaming operators charge a 30% TDS (tax deducted at source), which means that players no longer have to worry about figuring out and paying the tax on their online gambling winnings. So a word of warning: if a platform promises “full amount” payment of online casino winnings, that means the gamer is tasked with the burden of declaring his or her winnings via the correct annual tax form.

What about GST for online gambling?

In 2017, central and state governments in India adopted the standardized goods and services tax (GST), which places a 28% tax rate for all entertainment events and services including casinos, racecourses as well as their related services.

In a new research report, ENV Media described GST as India’s equivalent of Value Added Tax (VAT). It explained, “In general, however, players should not think about this tax much, as it is the registered supplier of goods and services that will need to pay the GST… Yes, it does affect the money a player puts in (before) they win; and it does decrease their return in purely statistical terms. But it is an indirect tax which is already included in the final product they purchase when they play.”

Are there direct surcharges for gambling winnings?

In addition to the universal 30% tax on gambling income, there are a couple of surcharges and tax conditions depending on the income groups.

For instance, gambling winnings that exceed INR 50 lakh have a surcharge of 10% applicable to the normal tax rate—for a total of 33%. Meanwhile, gaming income exceeding INR 1 crore—such as in the case of lottery winnings—incurs a surcharge of 15% of the normal tax rate, bringing the total to 34.5%.
There’s also a 4% surcharge for “Health and Education Cess,” which is added to the due tax and does not depend on income.

Shamoly Khera’s Bedazzle helps people to master the art of self-confidence

New Delhi: Shamoly Khera a multi-faceted speaker, a TV presenter, producer, public speaker and speaking coach who has made her mark in the Indian media and TV industry. Khera is coming up with her latest book titled ‘Bedazzle’ where she answers several mind boggling questions that we come across in our daily lives but never really work towards them to find an answer.

Some of these questions include– ‘How one's childhood can have a deep impact on one's self-confidence?’, ‘What affects a person’s confidence adversely and why does that matter?’, ‘How do animals with lesser thinking capacity step out to hunt, deeply motivated, every single day, despite a previous failed attempt?’, ‘How a sportsperson performs repeatedly even after multiple failures?’, ‘Where does that confidence come from, despite of a past failure and what can we learn from this?’, and ‘Our environment can affect the way our confidence is built everyday?

Answers to these critical questions have the potential to change one’s life. However, most people are so busy in their daily lives that they do not really focus on them and continue the way they are going.

The book is published by Bloomsbury and is available in both Paperback and Kindle editions here. #BedazzleTheBook is also trending in the non-fiction pre-order lists.

“I have always been intrigued by what makes a person more confident than the others – and often you will notice that confidence has a deeper correlation to success than talent. This book is an exploration of what one can do to achieve a level of eternal confidence, by being able to create a stream of constant infinite confidence within, through practical insights,” says Khera.

Hailing from the field of medicine and with a special interest in neuroscience, Khera believes in backing every remark with apt research. “I believe in factual evidence and I avoid making a point until and unless strongly supported by relevant studies. Finding the missing link between a confident and an under-confident person, Bedazzle aims to stimulate the reader in understanding his own psyche of success. Each person’s disposition is different, and we all get affected by failures and success differently,” adds Khera.

Bedazzle deconstructs the core aspects of subconscious motivation in all such scenarios and handpicks the triggers to understand confidence at a deeper level so that anyone can use it to their best advantage. The book reveals multiple action plans that can aid a person in developing and maintaining consistent confidence, awakening deep motivation in self and actualizing one’s full self-potential. Bedazzle unravels the perceptions of the human mind and how we can rewire our inner programming to reinforce positive perceptions.

Bedazzle reveals the art and science of confidence in today’s world. The book puts a spotlight on how the human mind has the power to self-actualize its truest potential through self-evaluation, self awareness and reach heights of achievement. As they say that those who are truly awakened to their inner powers can truly Bedazzle.

Khera penned the book during the lockdown. “This idea came to me sometime last year but it fully caught steam only in the months of lockdown. Lockdown has provided many writers and artists the perfect environment for brewing ideas and giving them shape –for only in such dedicated environments do novel ideas thrive!’

She goes on to mention that self belief is most important for a person’s confidence. “Because what you believe about yourself to be true, turns out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, so believe carefully – and when you do, believe fully!’

Khera has had an illustrious career and been the face of various television networks, such as Zee, TLC, Colors and MBC and has devised multiple shows that impacted across cultures and continents.

Currently, she is the director at her content distribution house, One Take Media Co. With an unflinching passion for the field of neuroscience and performance psychology, she has founded 'Speak to Inspire Academy' – where she has coached hundreds of leaders to become impactful speakers and discover their authentic story.

  • Guest column: The manifold benefits of reading

Guest column: The manifold benefits of reading

MUMBAI:“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” —Dr Seuss.

The above quote is so true. I always feel that there are so many books but very little time to read. Well, I am a voracious reader and read over 30books every year. But my heart always asks for more or, as I say, dilmaange more. I love reading non-fiction books mostly, but sometimes fiction entices me too, especially when it’s a recommendationfrom my elder daughter.

Books for me are not just a way of looking for solutions to problems we face, but also to discover various undefined issues we might be facing.

I am always intrigued by the way books come to your rescue when you need help. The Black Swan by Nassim Taleb is a great example. It teaches that the first step of fighting the unexpected is to accept it and not feel victimised.

A few months ago, I read Bridgital Nation: Solving Technology's People Problem by Roopa Purushothaman and N Chandrasekaran. It presents the hard-hitting reality of our nation and also provides pragmatic technology solutions to address it.

I have read countless books so far, and each one has taught me so much about things, people, places, life, etc. Here are some of the books that have made a pronounced impact on me and my life:

    –    The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale
    –    The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (I read this once every 3 years, and every time, it gives me a different perspective of life depending on the life stage I am in)
    –    The complete set of Yuval Harari’s Sapiens and the subsequent books (they give a good understanding of how societies were formed and what the future holds)
    –    Douglas Adams’s Hitchhiker’s Guide trilogy (reiterates the reality of uncertainties in life with a dose of humour)
    –    A book worth mentioning is The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz (Gives first-hand information on growing a company, finding the right talent and dealing with tough decisions on your journey)
    –    Antifragile by Nassim Taleb (set a strong resilience-building attitude and process, helped a lot at the time of shaping up the organisation)

Additionally, I also read Blinkist every day on diverse topics, even those that I wouldn’t read otherwise. That simply adds to my capability to be able to connect the dots across different topics.   Well, the list is too long, and my appetite for reading keeps getting bigger and bigger. I am aware many people might not have the time or inclination towards reading and hence, I ensure that I talk about my recent reads and learnings with my family, friends, colleagues, etc. They can always benefit from the new learnings I share with them. I also use Kindle to specifically highlight parts of the books that I like or find helpful and revisit these from time to time.
As I look back, I have realised that my reading has helped me learn valuable life lessons, find solutions to problems, strike up interesting conversations and has moulded me into a good story-teller. A good vocab, stronger analytical thinking, improved writing and tranquillity arean added bonus.

Here are some of the books that are on my reading list right now:

    –    Early Indians: The Story of Our Ancestors and Where We Came From by Tony Joseph
    –    Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration by Amy Wallace and Edwin Catmull
    –    Poor Economics by Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo
    –    A Human Algorithm: How Artificial Intelligence Is Redefining Who We Are by Flynn Coleman
    –    Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity by Jamie Metzl

  • 10 Most Stylish Beards From Movies

10 Most Stylish Beards From Movies

In the latest years, people tend to take as a lifestyle example actors from different movies they like. Maybe a woman wants to dress like her favourite actress, or a man wants to drive the same car as his favourite race driver from movies.

In this article, we’re gonna show you 15 most stylish beards from movies. Beards are on trend this year, aren’t they? And actor’s stylists seem to have lots of talent exposed in the latest movies.

It’s not a secret that beards have become the main accessory men wear nowadays. There are so many beard styles around, that they can simply choose the perfect one for them, adapted to the face shape, color and length.

From goatee to van dyke or long beards, all of those styles are unique, yet special. But when you think about growing a beard, you don’t have to think just about the style: it’s the patience to let it grow and the ability to maintain it in a clear shape.

Let’s see how talented were the actor’s groomers and what beard styles they adopted in your favourite movies. Enjoy!

    1. Tony Stark’s Goatee

Tony Stark’s Goatee beard style he adopted for the Iron Man movie has become iconic. As a powerful undercover hero in the movie, Tony Stark reveals his identity, as Iron Man, the superhero who wants to protect the world.

The goatee style provides a solid facial-hair option for both men who struggle to grow a full beard and those with rounder or less sculpted faces. It simply adds definition and balance to your face shape.

    2. Lou Ferrigno’s beard

Lou Ferrigno, the character from Hercules, had probably one of the most powerful, masculine beard styles we’ve ever seen. Being a combination between long beard and goatee, it perfectly fit Lou’s face and gave him the aggressive allure that he needed to perfectly play his role.

    3.  The Godfather’s moustache

Mr. Corleone’s moustache is probably one of the most famous ones in the world. For sure, you need some sophisticated barber tools to achieve that moustache. So symbolically, Vito Corleone’s moustache from “The Godfather” marked the transition from a small-time crook to a big-time player in the dangerous affairs field. That moustache is one of a billion brilliant details in one of the greatest films ever made. If you haven’t seen The Godfather yet and you feel like needing to see some adventure, it’s time to turn on the TV.

    4. Bradley Cooper’s beard

This is by far my favorite movie character in the latest years. So emotional and complex, Jack, the character played by Bradley cooper, has impressed the world with how natural everything came in the movie. A messy man like him couldn’t wear a different beard style than a messy one. Probably that messy, long beard is the one that built the perfect portrait of a real artist who can steal a singer’s heart so easily, isn’t it?

    5. Lucifer’s short beard

Tom Ellis, the “devil” who gave up to hell in order to move to Los Angeles where he managed to open his own business, wears in the series a short beard style, giving him a very serious, businessy look.

    6.  Zac Efron’s beard

In “Down to Earth”, Zac Efron journeys to different countries with wellness expert Darin Olien in search of healthy ways to live. Despite the “baby boy look” everybody met Zac in the Disney’s representations, Zac Efron comes back in this series with a mature, masculine look. Is it because of its fresh trimmed beard? Maybe, but for sure it is also because Zac really grew up…

    7.    Vin Diesel’s beard

Who could ever imagine Vin Diesel with some kind of hair? But it is true! In “The last witch hunter”, Vin Diesel grew a full beard that made him unrecognizable. For a story split between reality and fiction, it was obvious that something as unusual as seeing him with facial hair had to happen… 🙂

    8.    Jason Statham’s beard

Jason is a classic: bald, with his stubble beard, he has a universal style, no matter the movie he’s playing in. In the 2006 movie, “Crank”, the hitman named Chev Chelios works for a crime syndicate led by "Carlito". Chelios (Jason Statham) is contracted by Carlito to kill mafia boss Don Kim and apparently he did, but after that, the adventure begins.

    9. Dwayne Johnson’s beard

In “Skyscraper”, also a well known bald actor, Dwayne, appeared with a modern look: bald, but wearing a beard. It became a trend in the latest years, but for sure the FBI agent appeared as being just too busy to cut off his beard.

    10.    Leonardo Dicaprio's beard

In “Once upon a time in Hollywood”, Leonardo Di Caprio had probably the most funny beard he ever wore. A messy stubble with a long moustache, probably Leonardo had fun himself seeing that cowboy look on his face. For sure, the stylist reinvented the 2019’s Hollywood style with that look.

On Forex, you are free to set your own goals and use your favourite strategies. Every trader has their own road map to success. But where to get started?

There is no shortage of information online, so you can just Google the subject. However, not all sources are equally trustworthy. Follow our guide to master Forex and turn it into a lucrative career. Trading can be a hobby or a full-time job. It offers maximised flexibility.

     1.    Find Reliable Brokerage

Brokers are the middlemen between traders and the global market. You cannot connect to the foreign exchange directly: without an account, trading software is useless. Therefore, it is important to choose a firm that will meet your expectations (at the very least). Account registration is always free.

Brokers share educational content on their official websites. They have support centres which are ready to assist you 24/7. Clients may also be provided with links to recommended sources of trading wisdom. So, how should you choose a broker in India?

Residents may pick a local or international provider based on their needs. Always look for licensed operators which are authorised by respectable authorities. These could include the FCA in the United Kingdom, the FCSA in South Africa, the CySEC in Cyprus, etc. They are industry watchdogs which monitor the quality of services. Compliant organisations like ForexTime adhere to such norms as protection of clients' investment, negative balance protection, etc.

    2.    Find Suitable Software

You cannot learn to trade Forex without a trading terminal. Every broker recommends particular software. These systems may function as desktop platforms, mobile apps, or web-based systems. The latter work without downloads: they may be opened in any popular browser.

The most popular examples like MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 have all three versions. Users may easily switch devices during their trading day, as data is shared via clouds. The earlier version is geared towards currency pairs, while the fifth edition is best for diverse portfolio management.  When you are only learning the basics, a sophisticated interface may only confuse you.

    3.    Learn Theory and Practice

If you rely on theory alone, you are bound to fail in the live market. Start with a demo account (aka practice account). It is a priceless opportunity to hone skills before venturing into the real currency exchange.

Remember that you will work in a gigantic market. In fact, it is the largest in the world.
Every single day, close to $6 trillion is exchanged between its participants: institutions and individuals. Until the 1990s, Forex welcomed only large-scale players like hedge funds, major banks, and businesses. Today, it is classified as over-the-counter, which means that everything is done online.

So, the purpose of the demo mode is practical learning. You can test-drive your system without risk. Get familiar with the controls and explore analytical tools. You need to know how to initiate, manage and finalise a trade, what parameters must be set, etc. Any theoretical insight must be applied to virtual positions first.

    Opening a Demo Account

To register a demo, fill in a simple form on your brokerage site. Typically, it includes only basic contact details like full name, email address, country of residence, and phone number. Submit it and check your inbox: usually, credentials are generated and emailed almost immediately. You can enter them on the terminal straight away.

    Other Sources

Since the 1990s, countless books and articles have detailed popular Forex strategies. Today, you can also find podcasts, video tutorials, and webinars on the subject. YouTube has dozens of channels created by expert traders. For example, check out Warrior Trading.

    Choosing a Style

Try common styles in the practice mode to see which one suits you. Some strategies require more time than others. For instance, swing trades can last for days or even weeks. Meanwhile, scalpers dip in and out of the market several times per day. For day traders, Forex is a full-time job.

Switch to a live account when you are confident in your knowledge. Do not rush it: the longer you practise — the better your actual results. Remember that real trading always feels different, as you manage your own money.
