    It is no surprise to see that cricket has traditionally been the most-watched sport on Indian television. Figures from the FICCI in 2018 showed that wrestling was close to matching it, but cricket is still the sport to beat. 

    For example, the 2016 Indian Premier League Final was watched by around 730 million people in the country. However, some recent developments suggest that baseball could challenge cricket’s superiority in the years to come.

    MLB Is Pushing for More Growth in India  

    Major League Baseball (MLB) is the organisation that runs professional baseball in the US. They are currently pushing hard to grow the sport in other countries around the planet. They already have offices in places such as Japan, Mexico, China, and the UK as they look to open up new markets.

    As part of this, they have opened their first Indian office, in New Delhi. MLB has high hopes that this nation of cricket-lovers will embrace baseball, mainly due to the similarities between the two sports.

    Their plans for expansion also include giving school kids in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore the chance to learn the sport. The MLB First Pitch grassroots programme will see top coaches run workshops in all of these cities. Eventually, 300 cities across the nation could receive visits from baseball coaches.

    Jim Small is the senior vice president of MLB’s international operations. He said that India has “huge potential for us”. Small said that they see the country as being important in the global growth of their brand. They will also be screening American baseball games live on Facebook for Indian fans.

    The Return of the Million Dollar Arm

    Another baseball initiative involves the return of the Million Dollar Arm contest. You may remember that J.B. Bernstein created this challenge, as he looked for future baseball stars. It was shown as a reality show on Zee Sports and eventually led to a major 2014 movie based on the success of Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel. 

    They became the first Indian men to sign up to pro contracts for a sports team in the US. Neither of them had ever thrown a baseball before entering the contest. Patel joined the Pittsburgh Pirates before returning to India to teach baseball. Singh eventually moved into wrestling and has joined the WWE.

    This contest returned in 2019, as the MLB stepped up their search for new baseball stars. It is hoped that young athletes with a talent for cricket might make the switch to the American sport. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether Million Dollar Arm will return to Indian TV screens in 2020.

    The New Indian Baseball Star

    Another reason that baseball could truly take off her is the success of Karan Patel. In 2019, he became the first player of Indian descent to get drafted into an MLB team. 

    Patel grew up playing cricket and baseball in the US.  He called switching between the two sports a “fun transition”, although it does take him some time to adjust each time that he moves from one to the other.

    His father Kuldeep Patel played for the US cricket team after emigrating there from India. Karan followed in his footsteps by playing for the USA Under-19 cricket team before winning a college scholarship based on his baseball skills.

    He was picked by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB draft. He now plans to “work as hard as possible” and try to make the team. If he does, then millions of Indians are sure to be keen to tune in and see how he gets on.

    My unforgettable trip to Nandi Hills and stay at Discovery Village resort

    Like most people working in Bangalore, especially in the IT sector, my team too was subjected to long work hours and pressing deadlines to complete our project on time. But what awaited us at the end of the month was a total surprise.  Our team leader had planned for an outbound team building tour. There are many resorts in Bangalorewhere we could’ve gone, but our team leader had organised a weekend at the very beautiful Nandi Hills for the entire team. 

    Early Saturday morning, we set off to Nandi Hills located around 65 kms from Bangalore. The mood was energetic and the weather was cool. Despite there being quite a few resorts near Bangalore, we had been booked at the Discovery Village Resort at the foot of Nandi Hills as our team leader had heard several good reviews of this place (and I can now understand why). We set out early and reached the resort by 9 am. The check-in time however was 11 am, but the resort personnel, were really very accommodating and kept our bags with them as we decided to go atop the hill for breakfast. 

    After a hearty breakfast at the only restaurant on the hill, we set out to try our luck at paragliding. Let me say this, if you are an adrenaline junky, you must try out paragliding at Nandi Hills. It is something that cannot be penned, it has to be experienced. As you glide like a bird with the wind in your face and soar over the lush green and picturesque valley, your adrenalin rush almost makes you forget the trainer that is strapped on with you. The only hitch was that your 20 minutes get over before you know it. 

    The next stop was checking out the very famous and very talked about point, the Tipus Drop. Located on the hilltop around 600 m above the ground level, it is rumoured that Tipu Sultan used to throw his prisoners to their death from this point. We went there primarily for the most stunning view the hill had to offer of the valley. After clicking photographs to our hearts content, we headed back to the resort. 

    As we entered the resort for the second time in the day, we were greeted with a very warm welcome from friendly staff. Surprisingly, they had even put our luggage in our respective tents (bonus points there for the resort). Oh yes, did I forget to mention, part of the surprise was that this was a camping trip. Fresh unpolluted air and the morning exercise we had got had built up our appetites and we were ready to sit down to a traditional meal prepared by the chefs of the resort. The food was good and there were sufficient variety in vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare. With no limits on the servings, each member of the team went for second and third helpings.

    The tents were spacious and well set up with an amazing hill view and a typical Indian village ambience for a real off grid experience. The camp ground at Discovery Village, Nandi Hills also welcome families with pets too. After settling in, we were far from tired so the Discovery Village staff had organised several team building games for us. Getting our hands dirty and fighting for the prize like kids was way too much fun. 

    After the evening tea, we set off once again to go on top of the hill to catch the sunset, which was spectacular. It got dark pretty soon after that, so we quickly headed back to the resort. After a brief recess and rest, we headed for dinner which was set up at the campfire site. Bonding under the stars, warming our hearts and stomachs around the campfire, and chatting till the fire almost died out was a unique experience.

    We hit the sack by 11 pm, as we had planned an early morning trek to see the sunrise on top of the hill. We set out at sharp 5 for the trek, which was very enjoyable and watching bikers and cyclists passing us by waving profusely motivated us to walk faster. We were in time to welcome the sun, though because of the mist it felt like the sun was playing hide and seek between the clouds. Shortly, we began our trek back to the resort where a piping hot breakfast was awaiting us. 

    We checked out at noon and stopped for lunch on the way. It was a hectic trip, but as I returned home, I felt rejuvenated instead of feeling tired. This was owing to this very unforgettable trip to Nandi Hills and stay at Discovery Village resort.

    The International Cricket Council (ICC) proposes that the duration of Test matches be changed to four days instead of five. According to the ICC, this was to reduce the numerous pressure points in the global cricket calendar.

    If the changes were to take place, it would become mandatory to the World Test Championship starting 2023. The ICC committee is considering that the changes be considered in 2020 in which a lot of cricketers have opposed to.

    With four-day Tests, the fifth day will obviously be removed when in fact, it is the most exciting day of a Test match. Also, on cases wherein a day must be washed out due to unpredictable circumstances, the game could still push through within four days. However, if the Test matches are to be shortened in four days and something occurs, the remaining 3 days would not be enough to obtain a proper result.  

    The issue has filled the cricket world of different statements of opposition against the said matter.

    Francois ‘Faf’ du Plessis, captain of South African team:
    ‘I am a fan of Test cricket going five days. The great draws of the game always go to five days’. Du Plessis also said that the result of the game that they had just played would not be the same if in case it was played in just four days.

    This statement of du Plessis went against the stand of Cricket South Africa which firmly said that its ‘official policy to support four-day Test match cricket’. This was because of the fact that South Africa had played a four-day Test match against Zimbabwe way back December 2017.

    Virat Kohli, captain of India National Cricket team:
    Kohli says that he is not a fan of the proposal and that the five-day format and that the Test format should not be altered. The captain of the Men in Blue also slammed the ICC by saying that the intent is not right because sooner or later, they will be speaking of shortening the Test matches to three days and so on until Test matches completely disappear.

    Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricket legend:
    Tendulkar, dubbed as the God of Cricket, also disagrees with the changing of Test format. Based on his statement, taking away the fifth day in a Test match for spin bowlers is like taking out the first day for fast bowlers.

    Rohit Sharma, player of India National Cricket team:
    Sharma backed up their captain’s statement by saying that if a game lasts for four days, then it is a first-class match and not a Test match.

    Ben Stokes, vice-captain of England Test team:
    Stokes says that he prefers keeping the longer format of the game. ‘It's the best format of the game and it makes cricket and games like these just unforgettable’, says Stokes, referring to the five-day cricket format.

    Joe Root, captain of the England Test team:
    After England’s win over South Africa, Root gives out his stand on the issue by saying ‘What a great win that was. A great five days of cricket. You wouldn't see it if it was a four-day game, would you? It's a great advert for five-day Test matches’.

    Glen McGrath, former Australia fast bowler:
    ‘I'm very much a traditionalist. I like the game the way it is. To me, five days is very special and I'd hate to see it get any shorter. The introduction of pink Tests, day-night Tests is a great way to continue keeping our game fresh and moving forward. In respects to changing how many days its played, I'm actually against it. I like the way it is’.

    Nathan Lyon, Australia fast offspinner:
    Lyon also thinks that the idea is ridiculous and that he seriously hopes that the ICC is not considering it to happen. He said that he believes that four-day Tests are most likely to have more draws because the fifth day in a Test is what makes the game crucial.
