  • A unique quarterly program to spur Acer’s Retail Channel explosion

BANGALORE, February 2, 2006 ? Acer India, one of the world’s top four branded PC vendors, announced their latest quarterly Retail Mega Scheme, “Race 2 Glory”, aimed at rewarding their partners and encouraging them to expand their reach and product portfolio. The new retail scheme has been created to help the Acer retail channels avail maximum benefits from associating with brand Acer. Through this exclusive retail scheme, Acer plans to encourage and motivate its retail partners to reach bigger heights, as the company goes for an aggressive push through its retail channel.

The Acer “Race 2 Glory” is a scheme meant exclusively for the retail
channel and would be applicable for all purchases made between January 16, 2006 to April 15, 2006. It would comprise of 3 key sub-contests based on quantitative parameters and two special sub categories that will reward retailers on the qualitative aspects of retailing . The retail partners
comprising of Acer Malls (Exclusive brand shops) and Acer Points
(multibrand alignments) are divided into A, B, C and D category on the
basis of their geographical location. Each category of retailers based on
their geographical location and outlet type (Mall or Point) is then given
various types of targets like quarterly revenue targets, targets on product
    categories etc.

During the period of the scheme, partners are expected to maintain Acer’s
high standard of quality and operate within the market operating price
band. Special price and demo units are not included within the parameters
of this mega contest meant exclusively for this elite channel. To avail of
the benefits of the scheme partners are also required to follow certain
processes like filling in sell-out data in the Daily Sales Feedback System
on a daily basis as a way for Acer to track the product movement from the
retail counter which is an important method of gauging the pulse of the
    market.

Mr. S. Rajendran, GM Sales & Marketing, Mobile & Display Products Group, Acer India, said, ” The Acer “Race 2 Glory Road Ahead” is an exciting way to encourage our retail partners and involve them with Acer’s long term goal of reaching out to our customers. The main objective of this program is to recognize performance across product portfolios and reward partners who have gone all out during the quarter and invested the most into our business. Our presence in the retail space has grown to over 200 outlets comprising of Acer Malls and Acer Points across the country in 2005. Today our retail channel reaches out to over 80 cities and towns. We have drawn out detailed plans to aggressively ramp up the retail footprint this year and we will be sharing these plans very shortly. With the present retail program we hope to further encourage existing partners to take the next step forward along with Acer in our quest for another big year for the company.”

The Acer “Race 2 Glory Road Ahead” has four main contests:

‘The Big Apple’ , focuses purely on revenue achieved by retailers at the end of the quarter. Each category of partner for both Acer Malls and Acer Points will have a specific quarterly revenue target based on the total
addressable market in each of the geographical locations. There are two
levels of achievement for the partner to benefit from. In level one, upon
reaching 100% of the target revenue, the partner will win a full board
holiday package. In level 2, upon on achieving the 200%, 250% and 300% target revenue slabs, the partner will receive additional cash benefits. ‘Kaun Banega Product ? Pati’ rewards partners for achieving the monthly target in each product category. Based only on the sale of stock and sell models, there are 3 levels of achievement. 100%, 200% and 300% for Acer Malls and 100%, 150% and 200% for Acer Points. The products included in this category are Acer notebooks (All models except premium notebooks), Desktops (All desktops including Aspire and Acer Power series), TFTs (All models including 15″ TFTs) and Projectors (SVGA models). In the LCD monitors category the 100% slab can be reached by 100% achievement on any of the 3 TFT product categories (15″, 17″ and 19″). The 200% rewards slab can be achieved only on one single category of LCD monitors.

‘Digital Lifestyle Evangelist’ is targeted at the premium products category
including Notebooks (Ferrari, Tablet PC and Ultraportable), Desktops (E
500), TFTs (20″ and 24″) and Projectors (only XGA models PD300 series, PD500 series and PD700 series). This contest aims to help the retailer cater to the needs of the digital age customer. The partner can win the cash incentives by meeting the target required on the collective sales of
    the products mentioned.

‘The Quality of Output’ contest is designed to reward partners for their
excellence in the qualitative aspects of retailing. There are two awards
being given “The Best of the Best” and “Unique Marketing Initiative”. The
winner of both these categories will receive a special trophy and a cash
award of Rs 10,000. The results will be decided at the end of scheme
period, through a carefully assessed audit conducted by the Acer
headquarters and recommendations of quality, initiative and performance
    from regional managers.

The ‘Best of the Best ‘ determines the top Acer outlet in the country. The
winner will be chosen based on the variety of models on display in the Acer Malls and Acer Points across partner categories, the variety of
complementary product offerings for a walk in customer, and the display/
look and feel of the outlet. ‘ The Unique Marketing Initiative’ award
recognizes the partner’s innovative marketing strategies, out of the box
ideas and exciting demo initiatives, along with meaningful customer
    relationship management.

The quarterly retail scheme is Acer’s initiative to embolden its retail
partners to grow their own business through the various opportunities
provided by Acer. Thus, expanding Acer’s reach to their customers across the country and providing a key engine for growth for the company.

Critically acclaimed British rockers Franz Ferdinand on CNN’s ‘Talk Asia’

    Indian Standard Times
    Saturday, March 4 at 0930am, 2000hrs and 2230hrs
    Sunday, March 5 at 0600am, 1700hrs and 2030hrs
    Monday, March 6 at 0900am

Franz Ferdinand’s lead singer Alex Kapranos and bass guitarist Bob Hardy join TALK ASIA’s Lorraine Hahn this weekend. The four-piece-band first got together in 2002 and have since produced two critically acclaimed albums, enjoyed chart success on several continents and won a number of prestigious awards including the Mercury Music Prize and MTV Video Award in 2004 and Best British Group at The BRITs in 2005.

The group hopes that their unique name, taken from the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand whose assassination precipitated the First World War, will inspire musicians to be a catalyst for change. A combination of art, communication and social responsibilities lies at the heart of their music: “the best music does make a difference to your life as well. And it’s often in a personal way, and it’s often more of a social thing than a political thing.” Being both performers and fans, Franz Ferdinand also appreciate the artistic qualities of other British bands. To them, the term “competition” is rather “an old-fashion attitude”.

Keeping true to their Indy roots, Franz Ferdinand have remained active in the music scene of Glasgow and enjoy creating tunes that people can dance to. “There’s no point in trying to create music that has a commercial appeal, it just doesn’t work. I’ve known bands that have tried to chase after the current trend, or whatever is particularly fashionable…and it always comes across as being insincere and slightly distasteful” explains Kapranos. To survive in the current music industry, “you’ve got to keep writing goods songs” and that’s what they hope to do with their upcoming third album.

  • BES Expo 2006 concludes; good response from participants

New Delhi February 12, 2006: BES Expo 2006, the 12th International Conference & Exhibition on Terrestrial and Satellite Broadcasting, organized by the Broadcast Engineering Society (India) at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi, concluded today. The Expo witnessed overwhelming response from delegates, exhibitors, and visitors. This year’s edition of BES Expo registered over 6,000 visitors, which represents a 20 percent growth as compared to the last year. More than 1,000 delegates from India and abroad participated in the exhibition and conference, representing a growth of 25 percent as compared to the last year. A total of 65 companies representing 300 broadcast equipment manufacturers and solution providers from 25 countries across the globe exhibited at BES Expo this year.

The Conference Proceedings for the concluding day were spread over three sessions. The highlight of the first session was Future Satellite Technologies. Mr. A Bhaskarnarayana, Director SCP, ISRO, chaired the session. The speakers included Mr. D Venugopal of ASTS; Mr. Sanjay Jasola of IGNOU; Dr. PC Jain of STMicroelectronics; and Mr. ND Acharya of Infinium.

Elaborating on the techniques for overcoming blockage and multi-path effects for satellite communications and broadcasting in mobile environment, Mr. D Venugopal said, “Recently, there has been a lot of interest in providing satellite broadcast services to cars fitted with omni directional antennae.
As these services are one-way services without return acknowledgement, special techniques need to be used to overcome multi-path fading and short signal blockage due to foliage and buildings.’’

The focus of the second session was Digital Radio: Present & Future. The merits of various digital radio broadcast standards vis-?-vis their counterparts have been dwelled upon in this session, presided over by Mr.

Philip Laven, Director (TD), EBU, Geneva. The speakers in this session included Mr. Nick Banks of Radioscape, UK; Mr. Roger Johansson of Factum, Sweden; Mr. Jeff Astle of World DAB, UK; and Mr. Lindsay Cornell of BBC Research, UK. Commenting on the critical factors for planning digital radio rollout by broadcasters, Mr. Jeff Astle said, “The main consumer benefit of DAB is much more choice, as also better sound quality, reception improvements, and ease of use of digital receivers.”

The last session of Conference Proceedings for BES Expo 2006 broached on Content Protection and Broadcast Rights. It was chaired by Mr. KS Sarma, CEO, Prasar Bharati. The major concerns before the broadcast industry remains maintaining integrity of the broadcast content once it is broadcast.

The speakers including Mr. Andy Nobbs of Teletrax, UK; Mr. Philip Laven of EBU, Geneva; Mr. Paul Cheesbrough of BBC, UK; and Mr. R Vardarajan of Silicon Image, USA; provided an insight into the use of Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems to prevent users from copying or redistributing protected content.

India has seen phenomenal growth of news channels and FM radio channels, and there still remains potential for further growth. Display of technologies encompassing news automation, satellite broadcasting, and radio broadcasting will help the Indian broadcasters in adopting one that suits them the most. For the first time ever in India, BES Expo 2006 provided a platform for Live Demos on Mobile Broadcasting and Digital Multimedia Broadcasting. The ball has been set rolling for the next year’s edition – BES Expo 2007, which will highlight the theme “Multifaceted Broadcasting”.

Issued for favor of publications, broadcast and telecast.

  • Paheli becomes the top rated premiere of 2006 on Hindi movie channels

Paheli becomes the top rated premiere of 2006 on Hindi movie channels

Mumbai, … Star Gold has begun the year with a Bang. Paheli which premiered on the channel on 29th January, has become the Highest Rated Premiere of 2006, with a TVR of 2.6 (CS4+, HSM). What’s more, this makes it the third biggest premiere in the last six months, right behind Swades (TVR of 3 on premiere) and Hulchul (TVR of 2.7 on premiere), which were also on Star Gold. During the airing of Paheli, Star Gold reached out to 6.9 million viewers and had a commanding channel share of 58% in the category, dwarfing, Zee Cinema with 25% and Max at 17%

With Paheli, it has been proved once again movies get bigger on Star Gold. Swades and Paheli which were considered commercial disappointments on their theatrical release rated much higher than movies like Waqt (TVR of 1.5 on premiere) and Lucky (1.6 TVR on premiere) which were considerable box office successes. Even more interestingly, Hum Tum the smash theatrical hit, rated lower (2.5) on its premiere on SET than Swades, Hulchul & Paheli did on their premiere on Star Gold.

In the last six months, Star Gold has clearly walked away with the laurels. Six Star Gold premieres: Swades, Hulchul, Viruddh, Khullam Khula Pyar Karenge, Black and Paheli, made it to the list of top ten movie premieres in the Hindi movie genre with the top three going to Star Gold. Not only this, Star Gold has been uniquely successful in attracting the cream of the audiences with 6 of the top 10 movies among SEC A viewers being aired on Star Gold – with Swades and Paheli delivering whopping 4.5 and 3.8 TVR’s respectively in this SEC. And if that were not enough, Star Gold also delivered the most top rated premieres in the last one year with eight out of top fifteen premieres in the Hindi Movie Genre airing on the channel.

Ever since the revamp in July 2005, the channel has consistently kept its promise to the viewers of getting them closer to Bollywood than anyone else. Not just the premieres of the big movies but properties like Jabardast Janamdin and Uncut Premiere have got viewers up close and personal with the world of Hindi movies. Not to mention the annual Sabsey Favourite Kaun, the nation’s only barometer to recognize the absolute popularity of stars; and exclusive tie-ups with the most acclaimed hits, from Black at the start of the year, to Bluffmaster at the end, and many more in between

Said, Puneet Johar, Sr. Vice President Marketing & Communication, “ The ratings for Paheli prove once again that movies get bigger on Star Gold. Premieres of fresh titles, backed by promotional blitz have delivered rich rewards for us, and for the brands on Star Gold. With the Pure Gold Triple Premiere of the blockbuster Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya coming up this month, we are confident that Star Gold will continue the winning trend”

And with Schwarzkopf Palette Sabsey Favourite Kaun to hit the airwaves soon, there is no doubt that Star Gold will continue to delight audiences throughout the year in 2006

Star News exposé on Indian Ambassador to UAE

Indian Ambassador to UAE hosts Republic Day event to throw a party for his newly wed daughter; misuses the National Emblem too

April 7, 2006: The Indian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Chandra Mohan Bhandari used government funds and the occasion of the 56th Anniversary of the Republic Day of India (deferred to March 02, due to the demise of the Sheikh) to introduce his newly married daughter Aparita and son-in-law Rajesh Duggal to the Abu Dhabi elite.

Star News found out that not only was the official invitation card with the national emblem used for a personal party but the Government of India footed the bill for the reception Dinner held at the Embassy residence, Plot No 10, Sector W-59/02 Diplomatic Area, Abu Dhabi.

This is being seen as a major breach of protocol. As per protocol the ambassador cannot use the solemn occasion of the Republic Day reception, where he hosts international dignitaries on behalf of the President of India, for a personal reception.

The Card issued by the Embassy clearly states: “On the occasion of the 56th Anniversary of the Republic Day of India and to meet my daughters: Aparita with her husband Rajesh Duggal and Samahita, the Ambassador of the Republic of India H.E. Mr. Chandra Mohan Bhandari cordially invites _______ at a deferred Dinner Reception.”‘
