  • Music in the Park: A success story of Public-Private Partnership

New Delhi 21st February, 2006:- NDMC is the first civic body in the country that started promoting art & culture in its area as part of its discretionary function provided under its Act. The objective behind organizing such programmes is to upgrade urban life, which is otherwise
deteriorating and also to bring art and culture out of the confines of museums and auditoria to the open where general public could participate in large. It believes the event – ‘Music in the Park – Evening Ragas’ is
    becoming synonymous with good music.

The initiative is a part of a public-private partnership said Smt.Sindhushree Khullar, Chairperson, NDMC in a joint Press Conference organized by NDMC, Star India Pvt. Ltd. and SPIC MACAY Foundation, here this evening.

All the three organizations announced the achievements of their public-private partnership for promoting Indian Classical Music known as ‘Music in the Park’. This series of musical concerts have enabled Delhiites to enjoy the best of Indian classical music in the natural lush green environs of Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri. This is a platform which has consistently attracted large number of music lovers.

Outlining NDMC’s role as a municipality with a difference,Smt. Khullar said that in fulfilling its mandate to bring culture to the people, NDMC has put its spectacular greens to best use by making them come alive with the sound of mind. Starting from early 1998 through the Morning Ragas series, NDMC brought all time greats like Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan up close and personal to the denizens of Delhi amidst the sylvan surroundings of Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri. There was hiatus but not for long. ‘Music in the Park – Evening Ragas’ was the new avtar. The series resumed in June, 2004 with a star studded galaxy of music maestros who brought divine music to soothe frayed nerves.

Addressing the media Shri Peter Mukerjea, CEO of STAR India Pvt. Ltd. said that the objective behind this initiative is to break the barriers that come between good classical music and genuine music lovers. Ticketed concerts or those that are held for special invitees pushes our rich cultural heritage to become a preserve of the elite. Our concerts that are held in a public park is an effort in bringing classical music within the easy reach of the common man. No tickets, no invites. Just walk in, take your seats and be enthralled by the performances of the maestros. We would invite more
corporates to join us in this effort to turn public parks into cultural hubs, he added.

Since the launch of this series jointly in September, 2004 Nehru Park has
witnessed mystic performances by Ustad Bismillah Khan, Smt. Shubha Mudgal, Pt. Rajan-Pt. Sajan Mishra, Dr. L. Subramanium, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Smt. Kishori Amonkar, Begum Parween Sultana, Pt. Vishva Mohan Bhatt, Smt. Girija Devi and Pt. Kishan Maharaj.

To mark the celebration of this series, a very special concert by Pandit
Shiv Kumar Sharma and Ustad Zakir Hussain is being organized on Sunday the 26th February, 2006 at 6.30 p.m. at Nehru Park. This concert is being dedicated to the memories of Tabla Maestro Ustad Shafat Ahmed Khan. Three more concerts are scheduled to follow before the conclusion of the third part of this series They are vocal recitals by Smt. Shubha Mudgal on 4th March, 2006, Pt. Rajan-Pt. Sajan Mishra on 11th March, 2006 and Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna on 18th March, 2006.

Dr. Kiran Seth, founder of SPIC MACAY said that Indian Classical Music is nothing but ‘Naad Yog’. Naad Yog encompasses some of the most beautiful things in our heritage – subtlety, inspiration, abstraction and respect for the mystical. These elements would slowly fill the lives of young people who would be the torch bearers towards the creation of a world full of harmony and peace. For the SPIC MACAY Foundation, the Music in the Park series is yet another milestone in their efforts to do their bit for the cause of protecting and promoting the Indian Classical Music and other performing arts, he added.

  • NDTV exclusive with LTTE chief negotiator Anton Balasingham

NDTV exclusive with LTTE chief negotiator Anton Balasingham

LTTE Accepts Responsibility For Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. Apologises and assures that LTTE wont act against the interests of Govt of India.

June 27, 2006, New Delhi…In an exclusive interview to NDTV correspondent Noopur Tiwari in an undisclosed location in Europe, Anton Balasingham, Chief Negotiator and idealogue of Sri Lanka’s LTTE, has for the first time, accepted responsibility for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and apologised.

“As far as that event is concerned, I would say it is a great tragedy, a monumental historical tragedy for which we deeply regret and we call upon the Govt of India and people of India to be magnanimous to put the past behind and to approach the ethnic question in a different perspective”, said Anton Balasingham.

On being asked by NDTV correspondent, whether LTTE’s unhappiness over the accord between the two states led to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, Anton Balasingham said, “No. It happened later on. What has happened is, since we rejected the Sri Lankan accord there were a lot of events that took place creating a gulf between the LTTE and the Govt of India and the Indians later sent an IPKF – Indian Peace Keeping Force to disarm the LTTE and eventually broke out into an open confrontation. We fought a guerrilla war against the Indian army for 2 years and finally the Sri Lankans. We had a negotiation with Sri Lanka and secured the withdrawal of the Indian troops in the 90’s and of course finally it was followed by the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. As far as that event is concerned, I would say it is a great tragedy, a monumental historical tragedy for which we deeply regret and we call upon the Govt of India and people of India to be magnanimous to put the past behind and to approach the ethnic question in a different perspective.”

Watch the whole interview at 7.30 pm today on a special Episode of Southern Edition (for states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala) and at 8.00 pm today on India 60 Minutes on NDTV 24X7.

Excerpts of the exclusive interview with Anton Balasingham:

“India helped the Liberation Tigers at a particular historical time to train and arm our fighters, to protect our people from state oppression but the intention was not to create a separate state as such but to help the Tamils to protect themselves and there was a period of Indian intervention from 1983 upto 1987 during which the Sri Lankan Indian accord was written and it was during that time India wanted to find a political solution to the conflict. It is a very complicated history…”

Further Anton Balasingham explains the finer nuances of why the LTTE was not shy of the accord. “We were not very happy with the political solution proposed by India because it did not satisfy the political aspirations of our people. If India has offered a federal solution as she has in her own country then we would have definitely responded positively but the provincial administration suggested by India was totally inadequate to meet the demands of the Tamil people so that’s why we did not support the accord.”

On asked by NDTV correspondent, if the LTTE can give any sort of assurance to India that this kind of a thing wont happen again, Mr Balasingham said, “We have made pledges to the Govt of India that under no circumstances we will act against the interest of the Govt of India and that ever since the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, India played a detached role. What we feel is India should actively involve in the peace process. “

  • Imran Khan on ‘India Questions’ on NDTV

Imran Khan on ‘India Questions’ on NDTV

MUMBAI:Watch Imran Khan on ‘India Questions’, only on NDTV 24X7 on Friday, 17 November, at 9:30 pm.

New Delhi,14 November, 2006 — Watch the charismatic Imran Khan, one of the greatest cricketing all-rounder of all time, in an exclusive interview with Dr Prannoy Roy on NDTV’s highly acclaimed ‘India Questions’ on Friday, 17 November, at 9.30 pm and repeat on Sunday, 19 November at 11 am.

Imran Khan talks about his cricketing career, his best players, his take on the Indian cricket team, the current scenario of international cricket and a lot more…

Imran Khan feels Rahul Dravid would make a good captain of a combined team of players from India and Pakistan. He opts for Rahul Dravid over Inzamam-Ul-Haq as the captain of the hypothetical team, saying that Dravid is a more aggressive player with good leadership qualities. Imran Khan says, “Well I would say Dravid would be the captain, not being diplomatic… he is more of an aggressive captain, he is a bold captain, he leads from the front, Inzamam though I would say is a greater player, but as a captain he is too laid back.”

Talking about the recent doping controversy that had hollowed the careers of Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, at least for the time being, Imran Khan says that the timing of the doping tests was bad. When asked whether he thinks it was a conspiracy against these two players, Imran Khan disagrees. “No I don’t think (so), I just think the timing of the test was strange. The day before a vital match suddenly you find that two of your key players are not available. The test results should have come before the team’s selection. Poor Younis Khan… before the first match he was left with minus two fast bowlers and actually without a strike bowler. So I don’t think it was a conspiracy, it was bad timing, whether these guys are guilty or not, we will find out after the enquiry when they had a chance to present (their) case.”

On Indian cricketing standards, Imran Khan is upbeat, “Fielding standards have improved, and running in between wickets has improved. The batsman are playing more strokes than they were playing before because of one-day cricket but the level of fast bowling has gone down. I will only judge a cricketer by his performance in a test match because test cricket is the test of a cricketer. One–day cricket is the sort of cricket you can get away with.”

When asked whether he would have coached Kapil Dev if such a situation arose, Imran Khan has no reservations. “He is a shy boy, he didn’t ask, otherwise I would have.”

Asked who he thought should be the future captain of the Pakistani cricket team, Imran Khan is clear: “Well I think Younis Khan is the natural captain because he has the character, he is selfless. He oozes this selflessness in the field… and then of course he has the other characteristics that a captain must have and that’s guts and courage….”

  • Disney and GroupM present ‘Disney’s KidSense’

Disney and GroupM present ‘Disney’s KidSense’

A strategic initiative to bring insights into the world of kids

Mumbai, June 13, 2006: Disney, the world’s number one media brand and GroupM, the world’s leading full service media investment management company have joined hands to launch ‘Disney’s KidSense’ in India.

KidSense is a strategic effort by Disney and GroupM to explore the world of kids and share insights with the media and marketing fraternity. This initiative includes annual research and periodic forums for deliberations and creating opportunities to understand the largest kids market in the world – India. This announcement was jointly made today, by Rajat Jain, Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company (India) and Ashutosh Srivastava, CEO, GroupM, South Asia.

Disney’s KidSense will be the knowledge powerhouse for all stakeholders in the kids segment in the country. Using strategic insights gathered from research, opinions from childhood experts, media professionals, international learning and experience of the two giants, KidSense aims to fill the information need gap in the industry. As part of this initiative, KidSense today released its first two-part Research Study, which will provide a window into kids’ minds, interests, their behaviour, and influence on family purchase decisions.

Rajat Jain, Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company (India) said “Kids have increasingly emerged as savvy, sensitive and an extremely important consumer segment today. As global leaders in this genre, it is our responsibility to understand kids and provide a knowledge-house for all the stakeholders. We believe that Disney’s KidSense would act as a credible reference-point for the industry, our business partners and help grow the business in this industry as a whole.”

“This initiative with GroupM is an important step towards addressing the missing links into the external and internal realities of this genre. The four to fourteen age group is definitely one planet with multiple worlds. You can no longer treat them all as a homogenous group. The kids market in India is in a growth phase and marketers are interested in learning about this segment more than ever before. With Disney’s KidSense, we are beginning to equip ourselves to provide answers to most queries on kids”, he added.

Ashutosh Srivastava, CEO, GroupM, South Asia said, “The association of GroupM with Disney is all about unlocking value in this growing market segment of young consumers. An important learning for all is that kids like to be spoken to in their own environment – their schools, their play areas, their homes and their shows. Disney’s KidSense shows new realities of influence from this genre on purchase decisions in categories ranging from confectionery to cars and insurance companies. The latest mantra for marketers should be – talk the kids language to enter their homes. With this association, we have created a solid information base to address planners’ needs for the genre.”

The two parts of this elaborate research (quantitative and qualitative) were conducted and collated early this year by leading research firms – Indica Research Practices and Consulting and Third Eye across twelve markets in India. Over 4000 kids across the country were studied over a three month period to delve into their tastes, behaviour and influences on purchase decisions on 15 product categories ranging for confectioneries, commodities, FMCG, white goods, and services.

KidSense also includes the perspective of caregivers to draw insights on the developmental, social and behavioral reality of Indian kids. For the first time in India, this study provides a detailed analysis of kids between the ages of 4-14 with segmentation that brings out a clear distinction between the 3 main groups – 4 to 5, 6 to 9 and 10 to 14. It offers a full section on kid-power, which covers 15 non traditional product categories and answers a broad spectrum of advertiser’s queries.

Minister embroiled in job scam CNN-IBN Exposes The Fake Job Scam in Ambala

New Delhi, August 18, 2006: Minister of State for Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja is embroiled in an ironical controversy. A special investigation by CNN-IBN has found fake job scamsters in Haryana may have used her. CNN-IBN team has documentary evidence and has met victims who paid up to Rs. 2 lakh each for jobs they claim that Selja Kumari urged them into taking up.

Involved in the scam are a local scamster P.S. Sandhu and D.K. Bansal, the Congress MLA from Ambala Cantonment, which incidentally is Selja Kumari’s Lok Sabha constituency. They set up a fake Public Sector Undertaking called Agrofed and duped hundreds of youth across seven states. The duo are under the scanner for setting up a fake Public Sector Undertaking called Agrofed and duping hundreds of youth across seven states.

“I feel very sad that such a thing has happened. Lot of innocent people have been taken for a ride … that I should have may even be indirectly have recommended them. It was wrong on my part.,” said Kumari Selja, Minister of Urban Employment

Sandhu’s political connections with the Congress Party leadership in Haryana ensured that nobody doubted his fake employment letters. In 2003, he was jailed for posing as a Director of the Sports Authority of Haryana and issuing fake appointment letters to job seekers. Today, Sandhu is back in prison, accused of floating a bogus public sector unit – Agro-Fed.

    CNN – IBN IMPACT

Trilochan Singh, an Independent MP has raised the issue of the scam in The Rajya Sabha based on the CNN-IBN Investigation. In Ambala, shops have shut down and traders are protesting against MLA D.K Bansal and The Congress Party.

  • JANMAT ABHIYAAN – A Signature Campaign for better roads in Mumbai

JANMAT, the channel that has changed the way citizens engage with their leaders and make them accountable for their actions is now ready to take on bigger issues. It is launching the JANMAT ABHIYAAN – a movement that involves the citizens of Mumbai to connect with their conscience and join in the fight for justice.

JANMAT has taken upon itself not to stop at only promoting news and views but instead go beyond the obvious. The channel is stepping BEYOND NEWS, to occupy a space that takes the active support of the citizens to change the way governance is handled in India.

The issue at hand for the first salvo is the MMRDA and its inability to manage the roads and public infrastructure in Mumbai. Recently on the channel when MMRDA work at various hot spots was under the scanner, it was found that corruption, sub-standard work, mishandling of funds and laxity in meeting targets was rampant within the organization. In fact, when a Janmat camera team approached a public road repair area to shoot for their story, an engineer forbade the camera team to shoot. Their attitude was that roads were in fact “their own property”.

The plan therefore is to mobilize the people of the city to launch a large signature campaign that will enable the channel to make each citizen a participant in the march for justice. Instead of just reporting news, Janmat and it’s nationwide team of citizens will be plaintiffs in the search for integrity in public servants and public bodies that use public money for their projects.

In the first leg of the Abhiyaan, five mobile groups will travel the length and breadth of the city and collect signatures from citizens. In the second leg, this ongoing campaign will continue and form the basis of a memorandum that will be presented to the Chief Minister.

Launched in November with a vision to empower every Indian, ‘Janmat’ provides an opportunity for a pro-active working for a resolution of issues. India’s first 24-hour views channel, Janmat, makes the audience the hero.

JANMAT ABHIYAAN the voice of the people, alongwith the support of celebrities and leaders will eventually function as an Electronic NGO.
Be a part of the movement. Stand up for your rights!
