    April Broadcast launches Choice HD

MUMBAI: Mumbai based, April Broadcast Pvt. Ltd., a privately owned company in the Technology and Media space, announced the launch of CHOICE HDTM, a new video Switcher/Mixer application, developed in-house, especially for the Indian Wedding Video editing market. Watch the video here: www.youtube.com/abChoiceHai

This was demonstrated at the All India Photographic Trade and Industry Association’s (AIPTIA) Consumer Electronics and Imaging Fair 2014. The event, popularly known as Photofair, is India’s largest expo for Photography and Videography products, and was held in Mumbai from 9-12 January.

“This segment has been growing steadily over the past few years and we noticed that wedding videographers did not have too many options when it came to producing these typical wedding videos. With CHOICE HDTM, we have, literally, given them the freedom of choice to unleash their creativity and make something really beautiful for the bridal couple.” said Sandeep N Ohri, Founder, April Broadcast Pvt. Ltd.

CHOICE HDTM leverages industry-standard video I/O cards to give the professional video editor a simple-to-use, yet powerful solution, that runs on Windows-based PCs.

CHOICE HDTM is extremely versatile and simultaneously switch/mix 4 digital HD/SD or analog video inputs, 2 recorded media inputs, 2 graphics and 2 tickers (both in different languages). In addition, CHOICE HDTM has a variety of special transition effects, handles audio I/O and allows simultaneous recording in HD and web-streaming of the output.

According to industry estimates, the Indian wedding market as a whole is around US$ 25 billion, (approx. Rs 1.5 lakh crores), and growing at 25 to 30 per cent a year. In India, no wedding is complete without the production of a wedding video to capture and preserve this all-important life event.

Today, Indian wedding videos are increasingly inspired by Bollywood (the largely popular Indian Hindi film industry) and bridal couples aspire to have their videos shot to the tune of the latest popular film songs! This involves complex editing of videos captured from various cameras and angles, application of special effects and finally, expert editing to synchronize this to the background. With HD TVs and Blu-ray DVD players becoming cheaper, all of this is now required in full HD resolution.

“In addition to handling existing legacy analog and digital SD video, CHOICE HDTM handles full HD digital video and is also upgradeable to handle 2K and 4K resolutions as well, making this a safe investment for videographers in this fast changing technology landscape.” said Salim Shaikh, co-founder, April Broadcast Pvt. Ltd.

CHOICE HDTM will ship to customers in February 2014 and is the third application developed by April Broadcast in less than 9 months, since its inception. Other solutions are an entry-level HDMI-based virtual studio solution for Education and a high-end virtual studio solution for television broadcast.

  • India’s Doordarshan selects Harris Broadcast for nationwide digital transition

India’s Doordarshan selects Harris Broadcast for nationwide digital transition

NEW DELHI: Harris Broadcast, a market share leader of content management and network infrastructure solutions serving the global broadcast, communication service provider, government and enterprise markets, today announced it has been selected by national broadcaster Doordarshan to deploy a new DVB-T2 transmission infrastructure across the country.

The government of India is pushing ahead with plans to complete the move from analogue to digital television transmission by 2017. As the leading public service broadcaster in India, Doordarshan has an obligation to cover the whole country and to reflect the diversity of Indian society, including content in the more than 40 languages. At the same time, it is promoting a boost in quality and viewer engagement by rolling out high definition channels, as well as delivering its multi-lingual content across multiple platforms including mobile devices in the future.

“This is not only a large-scale project for Doordarshan, but it is also one of the most high profile and important projects the broadcaster has undertaken,” said Joe Khodeir, senior vice president Asia at Harris Broadcast. “Our DVB-T2 solution maximises spectrum capacity, allowing Doordarshan to roll out multiple channels serving different communities as well as offer multiple HD channels. For a project of this scope and significance, Doordarshan looked for a partner with a strong local service commitment and presence along with best-in-class technologies that delivered the lowest lifecycle costs.  Our Maxiva™ ULX architecture provides the best power efficiency in the market, which was a critical consideration for Doordarshan when energy consumption is such a large part of the operating cost.”

The first of two transmission contracts awarded to Harris Broadcast adds HD channels to digital multiplexes in four major metropolitan areas. Each facility will be served with a new 6kW Harris Broadcast Maxiva ULX DVB-T2 transmitter. The second contract is for 19 Maxiva ULX transmitters, which will be used to roll out digital transmission to the regions of India. In the first instance, these will carry standard definition channels in their multiplexes, but the flexibility of the transmitter and infrastructure design allows for an easy upgrade to HD when the time comes.

The Maxiva ULX is a liquid-cooled, solid-state transmitter built on a modular architecture for maximum flexibility in inputs, transmission standards and power outputs. By incorporating Harris Broadcast PowerSmart® technology, the Maxiva ULX uses the minimum energy for the radiated power, produces less heat and occupies the smallest footprint in the industry. Together, this provides simplified installation, easier maintenance and reduced total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the transmitter.

  • Canadians will double up on pay-TV

Canadians will double up on pay-TV

MUMBAI: More than 2.5 million Canadian households will have multiple TV subscriptions, paying for TV through a traditional distributor and at least one other OTT (over-the-top) TV service, up over 150% from 2012 levels. By the end of 2014, the number of households that will pay for a second basket of TV content will be more than 100 times greater than the number of households that have cut the cord in 2013, and cancelled their subscription TV, according to Deloitte’s 2014 Technology Media & Telecommunications (TMT) Predictions report.

For more than a decade, Deloitte’s TMT Predictions have provided advance insights into the implications of what’s to come in technology, media and telecommunications. Deloitte’s TMT Predictions are based on global research including in-depth interviews with clients, industry analysts, global industry leaders and more than 8,000 Deloitte member-firm TMT practitioners.

“As more and more content owners, aggregators and platforms such as cable, telecom and satellite providers make their content available online through subscription, the number of Canadian households with multiple subscriptions will rise,” said Duncan Stewart, Deloitte’s Director of Research for TMT. “So far, at least, the cord-stackers are running far ahead of the cord-cutters. Households will want the best quality and an abundance of content which will have an impact on bandwidth and put upward pressure on monthly download allowances.”

Organizations that offer apps, content and services will have a greater opportunity to win a share of the consumer’s wallet as Canadians double up, or even triple up, on TV subscriptions. With global combined sales of PCs, smartphones, tablets, TVs and computer gaming equipment plateauing in 2014, technology spending may shift from hardware to the software, content and services categories.

Seniors close the smartphone generation gap

Based on current data and projections, Deloitte predicts that market adoption for PCs, tablets, TVs, computer gaming equipment and smartphones may be saturated and global sales for the combined revenues of these top selling devices will level off, but the opportunity for smartphone adoption will be amongst seniors 65 years and older. Currently less than 30% of seniors own a smartphone in the developed world, and the number will rise 50% in 2014. Deloitte also predicts the smartphone generation gap will continue closing and will possibly be non-existent by 2018. But some things may not change: 30% of those over 65 who own a smartphone have never downloaded an app.

“The change in the physical form of the smartphone is key to why seniors will embrace the device more and more,” said Richard Lee, a TMT Consulting Partner. “Smartphone screen sizes have increased from smaller than 3.5-inches to at least 4-inches. The larger screen size provides improved functionality and experience for everyone, especially seniors.”

The appeal of larger screens will also mean growth in the adoption of phablets. Devices boasting screen sizes between 5.0 and 6.9-inches diagonally will represent a quarter of smartphone sales worldwide, but Canadian sales will likely be lower: 15-20% of smartphones, or just over a million phablets out of a 6 million annual smartphone market.

Reduced patient wait times and decreased education and training costs: Deloitte also predicts that technology will reduce patient wait times and decrease the cost of health care by shifting the focus from prevention to early intervention. There will be 75 million eVisits in 2014 in North America, potentially saving over $3 billion compared to in-person doctor visits, and will benefit patients and doctors both for receiving basic diagnoses, and reducing wait times as well as providing better care for remote communities through services like tele-stroke.

There is long-term potential for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to disrupt the education market as cash-strapped governments and students face costs associated with education, but not until key challenges are overcome. Enrollment in MOOCs in 2014 is expected to increase by 100%, but a surprising 93% or more of MOOC students fail to complete courses they registered for.

“MOOCs are an increasingly attractive method of learning and a suitable education and training model.” said Stewart. “There’s a lot of discussion about their potential for university and college education, but the more exciting near term market is MOOCs for enterprise education and on-the-job training.”

The 10 most important technology, media and telecommunications predictions for Canada:

       1)  Phablet are not a Phad – The lines will blur as phones and tablets converge. Phablets – part phone, part tablet – are smartphones with a screen size of 5.0-6.9 inches. They’re not doomed because of their size: global sales will be 100% higher than in 2013, with 25% of 2014 smartphone sales, or 300 million units, worth $125 billion.

       2)  Wearables: the eyes have it – Global sales for all categories of wearable computers in 2014 will exceed $3 billion. Some wearable devices will be better positioned for success than others, with smart glasses likely to sell 4 million units at a price point of about $500, for a $2 billion market.

       3) Doubling up on pay TV – By the end of 2014, as many as 50 million homes worldwide will pay for TV through a traditional distributor and have at least one other OTT (over-the-top) TV service.

       4) Narrowing the gap: seniors embrace the smartphone – In 2014, the fastest growing demographic for smartphone adoption globally will be individuals who are 65 and older, with 50% increases year-over-year, and resulting in more than 40% of seniors owning a smartphone.

5)eVisits – In 2014, the global health market will be driven by eVisits, which are an alternative to face-to-face appointments that offer cost savings to public and private health systems, opportunities for improved patient experiences and access to care; as well as reduced wait times. 100 million eVisits in 2014, with 75 million in North America, saving as much as $3 billion.

6)MOOCs (short term/long term) – Enrollment in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) will be up 100% compared to 2012 to over 10 million courses, but they will not disrupt the tertiary education market in 2014, with fewer than 5% completing their courses. But the enterprise market looks like it will be an early adopter, both in Canada and globally.

7)Death of the voice call – but only for some – The proliferation of smartphones, data plans and full-featured messaging apps is expected to create a category of voice seldoms. In 2014, the 20% of Canadian cellular customers who log the fewest minutes of voice calls will spend less than two minutes per day talking on their phones. Instead, many are letting their fingers do the talking through various text messaging applications.

8)Those who like TV like it a lot – By the end of 2014, the 20% of English-speaking Canadians who watch the fewest minutes of traditional TV will watch just over 30 minutes per day, down from nearly 60 minutes in 2004. At the same time, the one fifth of English Canadians who watch the most traditional TV are predicted to watch even more: 8.2 hours per day, about the same as in 2004, but up 10% from 2009 levels. This decline amongst the first group and the increase amongst the group who watch the most TV will have virtually no effect on the average English Canadian TV viewing of 3.8 hours per day. Demographic commonalities are found in TV viewing behaviours by age, language and ethnicity and even by income and education, which means that advertisers will have the opportunity to better target the audience they want to reach.

9)The Converged Living Room: a plateau approaches – Global combined sales of smartphones, tablets, PCs, TV sets and gaming consoles have enjoyed remarkable growth since 2003, almost 12% per year, but Deloitte predicts a plateau in growth is imminent. Sales will grow at a slowing rate with a ceiling of about $800 billion a year.

      10)  TV sports rights: extra premium – The global value of premium sports video rights will increase by 14% in 2014, compared to growth of 5% from 2009-2013. This surge will be led by North American sports leagues, including the recent Canadian NHL announcement, and European soccer.

Deloitte’s TMT predictions will be showcased in a 12-stop Canadian road show with events starting on January 14. Sign up to attend an event here. Visit to learn more about Deloitte’s TMT Predictions 2014.

  • The Mahindra Blues Festival is Back!!

The Mahindra Blues Festival is Back!!

MUMBAI: Mumbai’s winter thrill closes on a high note this year, a Blues note to be precise. The Mahindra Blues Festival returns to grip live-music-loving audiences once again, with highly acclaimed musicians from around the globe. Amped up with an all-star ensemble of international and Indian Blues artists for 2014, the fourth edition of Asia’s largest Blues festival promises to be a high-energy dose of Blues magic staged at the iconic Mehboob Studios in Mumbai’s seaside suburb of Bandra.

The Festival’s star-studded line-up includes Grammy Award-winning Bluesman Jimmie Vaughan, the Grammy Award-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band with special guest Doyle Bramhall II, Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, Zac Harmon and India’s own beloved Blues bands, Soulmate and Blackstratblues.

Mahindra Blues Festival fans are sure to love Austin, Texas-based Jimmie Vaughan, a four-time Grammy Award winner. The older brother of the legendary Bluesman Stevie Vaughan, Jimmie has made his mark in the Blues world, winning the 2001 Grammy Award in the Traditional Blues Album category for his album, “Do You Get the Blues?” Jimmie is no stranger to the stage, performing often at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in the USA, which has seen the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and other legends.

The remarkable Grammy Award-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band will highlight at the festival this year. Band leaders, and husband and wife, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi gave up their solo bands to form the ten-member Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010. Though Derek and Susan recorded their debut album only in 2011, they have taken the Blues world by storm, winning for Best Blues Album at the Grammy Awards 2012 and successfully touring around the world. A busy bunch, they also released their second album, “Made Up Mind,” just this summer. This band is probably one of the hottest current acts to tour the country, a big ‘watchout’ for the Mahindra Blues Festival fan base. At Mahindra Blues Festival, Tedeschi Trucks band will be joined by special guest Doyle Bramhall II, another talented musician from a Blues family, as the son of the late Doyle Bramhall. A multi-talented performer and producer, Doyle Bramhall II recently co-produced and toured the world with Eric Clapton in 2013, and produced American singer Sheryl Crow’s 2010 album, “100 Miles from Memphis.”

Blues lovers also cannot miss Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials band. A Chicago native and a veteran of the Chicago Blues, Lil’ Ed will serve up a dose of the songs of his native city, painting the diversity of the Blues genre today. Adding to this picture will be Mississippi-born and bred Zac Harmon, a multidisciplinary giant who has written and produced songs for reggae group Black Uhuru and Rhythm and Blues singer Alexander O’Neal. This Mississippi musician gives a taste of his home state’s Blues style in a famous CD recording of his performance at Los Angeles’ Babe and Ricky’s Inn Blues club. A former member of the Board of Directors of the prestigious Blues Foundation, Zac Harmon’s soulful, passionate Blues will pulsate throughout the Mahindra Blues Festival.

A Blues Festival is incomplete without our very own Blues darlings. In comes Meghalaya-based band, Soulmate, perhaps India’s most prominent Blues-rock band. Composed primarily of the singers and guitarists Rudy Wallang and Tipriti Kharbangar, this talented band formed in 2003 has toured music festivals and played concerts around the world, including at the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the International Jazzmandu Festival in Kathmandu. They also opened for famed guitarist Carlos Santana at the Formula One Rocks in Delhi. This year Soulmate adds a touch of ‘new’ into their mix, adding to a line-up of traditional and folk musicians. They will also launch their new album here at the festival. This is going to be very interesting indeed.

Mahindra Blues Festival’s second Indian talent is Blues band, Blackstratblues, the solo Blues project of Mumbai-born Warren Mendonsa. Warren, arguably one of the finest guitarists in the country, has released two solo albums, “Nights in Shining Karma” in 2007 and “The New Album” in 2009, and comes prepared to wow the crowds with the soul-stirring sounds of his finely tuned axe.

Jay Shah, Head – Cultural Outreach, Mahindra Group said “The response Mumbai has given to the Mahindra Blues Festival is indeed heartening. Each year, the iconic spaces at the Mehboob Studios reverberate with the Blues and provide an immersive experience to the participant. The festival offers equal access both to a diverse audience as well as blues bands from India and abroad. The impact of this festival is felt far and wide – as far as the Mississippi Delta in the United States where our tractor customers feel proud of their cultural heritage being appreciated and celebrated in a land far away”.

In 2013, the sold-out Mahindra Blues Festival treated over 3500 fans to international musicians like Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Popa Chubby, the Dana Fuchs band, and Indian Blues group, Big Bang Blues. Since its start in 2011, the Mahindra Blues Festival has almost single-handedly promoted the Blues as a music genre to Indian audiences. Since then, the Blues has grown tremendously in popularity, sparking up many Blues Bands and smaller concerts and festivals. A leader in its category, the festival prides itself in being not just a series of concerts but one of the city’s ‘prestige’ experiences, comparable to events that happen in Europe and America. With Blues performances on multiple stages, a very evolved and discerning audience from around India and the world, and perhaps the most delicious American Southern food outside of Mississippi, the Mahindra Blues Festival is a great way to enjoy the last days of winter.

Now in its fourth year, the Blues Festival has gained a loyal following as diverse as the Blues genre, bringing Indian, International, young and mature fans together for a weekend of Blues music, good food, and a few surprises. Thanks to the MBF, the Blues has found a new audience in India, one that is growing every year.

Tickets go on sale in Janurary 2014, Daily (Rs.2000) Season (Rs. 3000), Student (Rs.800 per day) all standing, Premium Enclosure Rs. 11.000/- includes seating and beverage.

The concert is promoted and produced by Oranjuice Entertainment, a professional music and concert management company.

Gear up for a weekend of electrifying Blues!
