  • Witness the history and making of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the ‘Peanuts’ gang

Witness the history and making of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the ‘Peanuts’ gang

MUMBAI: Charles Monroe Schulz brightened the world for 50 years with his Peanuts comic strip.  With Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the rest of the lovable Peanuts Gang, Schulz explored the emotional territory of friendship, disappointment, faith, and tolerance. Loved by all comic fans – children and adults alike, the much-adored & iconic ‘Peanuts’ is set to make a grand entry in India. Viacom 18 announced its association with the classic, Peanuts Worldwide, to launch an exciting range of consumer products, all set to hit the stores soon. The wait is not too long as the gang kick starts its journey with an exhibition ‘Inside Peanuts: The Life and Art of Charles M. Schulz’ at the 4th Indian Comic Con, 2014 – starting with New Delhi on the 7th of February.

As the long running classic ‘Peanuts’ finally hits the comic convention, fans can expect to learn more about the comic series, its creator and the history of the legendary brand through a special showcase at the Comic Con 2014. ‘Peanuts’, that started off as a comic strip with iconic characters Charlie Brown, his sister Sally Brown, his friends Lucy, Linus, Franklin and Patty, his dog Snoopy and Snoopy’s sidekick Woodstock, have grown to become an institution in itself. Charles Schulz, creator of the comic series, developed the comic strips which went onto become a huge contribution to the cartoon and comic industry.

Corry Kanzenberg, Curator, Charles M. Schulz Museum & Research Center said, “We are thrilled to share the legacy of Peanuts at the 4th Annual Indian Comic Con, and hope visitors to the exhibition will enjoy learning about Charles M. Schulz, his creative process, and the stories behind Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts Gang. This is the first time that the Charles M. Schulz Museum has participated with Comic Con in India, and we feel honored to be part of the excitement.”

Speaking of the occasion, SaugatoBhowmik, Business Head, Consumer Products, Viacom 18 stated, “Peanuts is an iconic brand that has been loved globally since 5 decades. Viacom 18 is proud to bring the Peanuts gang to India in the form of consumer products. We are kick-starting the launch programme of the merchandize by introducing it through a visual extravangaza at the Comic Con, scheduled in the capital this weekend. I look forward to seeing the reactions of comic enthusiasts around Peanuts and assure consumers of an exciting range of consumer products around it really soon.”

The exhibition follows Schulz from his Minnesota roots to his life in California and tracks the development of the characters that make up the unique world of Peanuts.  Thirty Peanuts comic strips, Schulz quotes, and photographs illuminate the story behind the creation of this most popular and influential cartoon strip.  Comic strips by George Herriman (Krazy Kat), Milton Caniff (Terry and the Pirates), and Elzie C. Segar (Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye) shed light on how these prominent cartoonists influenced Schulz as a young artist and reveal the contrast of Schulz’s drawing style to the elaborately illustrated cartoons popular during the early 20th century.

Schulz officially retired in December 1999 and always intended that the strip would retire with him.  On February 12, 2000, at age 77, just hours before the final Peanuts strip appeared in Sunday newspapers, Charles Schulz died at his home in Santa Rosa, California.

To know more about the brand ‘Peanuts’, head straight to the 4th Annual Comic Con, 2014 in New Delhi. For all comic fans of ‘Peanuts’, the comic character will travel to each comic-con to be held in India this year in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai. So don’t miss out on catching up with your favourite comic characters throughout the year!!!

Inside Peanuts: The Life and Art of Charles M. Schulz is organized by the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California, U.S.A.

  • DC Design unveils two new cars at Auto Expo 2014

DC Design unveils two new cars at Auto Expo 2014

NEW DELHI: India’s premier automotive design and specialist car manufacturer DC Design is ready with two exciting new concepts to delight automobile enthusiasts at the 2014 Auto Expo. Keeping in line with the firm’s philosophy and also its previous track record for delivering drop dead gorgeously styled vehicles, the two new concept cars are production bound in 2016.

The DC Eleron and the DC Tia represent DC Design’s ability to conceive an idea for various niche segments and then design and develop a vehicle with unique attributes that go beyond mere style. While the Eleron is an open Targa-topped SUV with radical lines, the Tia is a nifty two-seater runabout for town use with outrageously crafted lines yet packing in a proven small driveline.

Both the cars were unveiled today by the award winning actress and style icon Kareena Kapoor Khan and Mr. Dilip Chhabria, Founder, DC Design. Speaking at the launch, Mr. Chhabria said, “I want the most desirable car in the world to bear a ‘Made in India’ tag. For Avanti which we launched two years ago we are looking at manufacturing 2000 units per annum starting third quarter of this year. For Eleron and Tia we are looking at 500 units and 1000 units per annum respectively by 2016. We have currently invested in the excess of INR 85 crores for the production of Avanti and INR 50 crores each for the production of Eleron and Tia so far and are looking at further investments in the coming future. We aren’t a global player; we will not build millions of cars a year, but I promise you, the few thousand that we will put out every year will be the sexiest cars on Indian roads.”

Making heads turn at the launch Kareena Kapoor Khan also added, “It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of such a remarkable launch. DC Design is clearly the most prominent and promising name in the Indian automotive design industry. Both Eleron and Tia are spectacular looking cars and are sure to create a buzz amongst Indian auto enthusiasts. I wish the team the very best for these car launches.”

The Eleron is DC Design’s high-end take for a top line SUV with a difference! The name has been phonetically conceived from the aeronautic term ‘aileron’ given that the nature of the car’s design takes in a supposedly duo-layered approach as regards its bodywork, the upper half seemingly floating on the lower base whichever way you tend to look at it.

From the deliciously overwhelming Eleron SUV, DC Design moves fast-forward to the mega-mini segment with its all-new two-seater runabout the DC Tia! It isn’t difficult to understand why such a car given its small footprint but with radical turnout given that the Indian car market’s fortune lies at the base of the pyramid and this is where an added premium positioning is ripe for the times. DC Tia again treads the space frame chassis route with carbon composite bodywork – a sure shot recipe for strength and structural integrity while keeping weight down to a bare minimum.

  • ISE Theatres a resounding success

    ISE Theatres a resounding success

AMSTERDAM: New for ISE 2014, the Residential Solutions Theatre and Commercial Solutions Theatre have proven to be a big draw for visitors. Covering a range of topics, including audio connectivity, collaborative technology and home automation, the free-to-attend sessions have been well received throughout the show.

Lighting design was a hot topic in the Residential Solutions Theatre with independent lighting designer Tad Trylski declaring: “There is a lighting design-shaped hole in current AV systems training.

“There is a lot of expertise in controlling the light, but the gap exists in the lighting design skills themselves and/or how to work with lighting designers,” he added, during ‘The Science of Lighting Designers’.

Trylski is currently working with CEDIA on potential courses, and advises that to best use light, and make huge efficiency gains: “The qualitative design must come first. Where and when do you want the light, and what do you want to use it for?”

The biggest mistake engineers make is to work to the plan (rather than a section), and simply place lots of downlighters lighting the floor. Instead, they should light the walls (giving more perceived light with fewer lights) and specific tasks.

He gave an example of a typical developers one-bedroom apartment, where using lots of 50W downlighters used 1,200W (with other lights adding more than 600W), whereas a using a lot of linear LEDs, floor mounted wall washers, and by putting lighting close to the task, cut the total energy use to just 632W. “It’s slightly more difficult to install, but the savings are phenomenal and it looks a lot better,” he told visitors.

Over in the Commercial Solutions Theatre, InfoComm sustainability officer Allen Weidman stated that Smart Buildings are a market waiting to happen. They will be a great opportunity for integrators “to add value and claim the space. It’s there for the taking” as no one else has made it their own, he added.

The biggest problem is the lack of standards or best practice for Smart Buildings Technology (SBT). “We don’t even have an accepted definition for SBT,” he said. “We really need open source in this area,” pointing to the Raspberry Pi-based Ninja Blocks project for home automation.

The market could be huge. China has just started replacing 76 million analogue electricity meters with smart meters, while the US already has 46 million smart meters (40% of households) installed, and it is calculated that SBT could save $20-25 billion in the US alone each year.

Google just spent $3.2 billion on Nest, which makes smart thermostats, smoke detectors and door openers, showing that “data will be the business driver,” he said. “Sensors are the key to the future for everything, to which smartphones will be connected.”

Sessions continue in the theatres today, opening at 11:00 with Keith Yates discussing ‘Using science to solve the low frequency problem in media rooms and home theatres’ in the Residential Solutions Theatre, and ‘DreamHack: the technology behind a major eSports tournament’ with Jonas Bengston of DreamHack in the Commercial Solutions Theatre.
