CBC Canada heads for Banijay International’s Comedy on the Edge

MUMBAI: Leading distributor Banijay International has sold the entertainment format Comedy on the Edge to Canada. The format, created by DR in Denmark, has been acquired by national broadcaster CBC for English speaking Canada.

The local version, which will consist of 13 x 30’ episodes, will be produced by Frantic Films and is set to launch in early 2015.

Comedy on the Edge, a show which aims to bring back a local community’s lost sense of humour, was originally created by and aired on Denmark’s public broadcaster DR. The successful Spanish adaptation was recently renewed for a second season on TV Catalonia, and multiple seasons of a local version have also aired on TV2 Norway.

Sebastian Burkhardt, Head of Sales at Banijay International, said, “Our friends at DR have created a format which perfectly blends comedy with factual entertainment. More than anything this format is about bringing people together and connecting viewers with even the most remote places in the country using shared humour.”

Each week in Comedy on the Edge, a comedian-host heads to a small town that find themselves on the decline due to industries closing, unemployment rising and people moving away. They’re often stigmatized in the media, but the comedian will demonstrate that they are also places with proud residents, where you’ll find quirky people and unusual practices. The comic will spend several days in the town, joining in local customs, discover unique trades, see secret beautiful sights and uncover the town’s creative outlets. At the end of the visit, in front of an audience of residents, the host will deliver a stand-up routine based on everything they have seen, to celebrate the locals’ sense of humour about themselves, and give viewers a new perspective.

Comedy on the Edge will return to Cannes next month along with a raft of new formats from Banijay International. The distributor’s slate of new launches includes Extraordinary Masters, the new high-octane studio entertainment format from Brainpool, the creator of Stars in Danger: The High Dive and Beat Your Host. In each thrilling episode, pairs of contestants duel it out in brand new disciplines never before seen on TV, from extreme physical events to feats of dexterity or super-human intelligence. The winner of each duel wins the national title, and then it’s up to the audience to choose their favourite Master of the day, who will be back to meet an international competitor and fight for the world title. The original German series drew nearly 4m viewers per episode.

Also launching at MIPTV is The 7 Weddings. This unique and ambitious documentary-style format follows 7 couples from the moment they make their wedding vows through the highs and lows of the first 7 years of their marriages. What really lies ahead for these couples, and what does it take to make a marriage work? Produced and shot like a feature film, the series picks up on the nuances from 7 very different couples. Can they beat the odds and make their marriage last in a society where the divorce rate is rising and relationships are under more pressure than ever before? The carefully crafted production consists of seven episodes per year, for seven years, one for each couple, up until the notorious “seven year itch”, often seen as the make-or-break point for marriages. This fascinating series provides voyeuristic access into the ongoing challenges, joys, obstacles and changes that lie at the heart of any marriage. Some will thrive, some will struggle, some may fail entirely, but each will offer a fascinating window into the modern world of love, and what it takes to truly make a relationship work.

Other titles to debut at MIPTV include youth-skewing “sciencetainment” format Tested on Humans, factual entertainment My Week Your Week, in which each partner in a relationship takes total control for one week to try to get things back on track, and trivia-meets-sightseeing game show Street Smart.

  • Narendra Modi gets chatty with ETV

Narendra Modi gets chatty with ETV

JAIPUR: BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, while for the first time giving a long interview to ETV, during the electioneering environment, has expressed that in the Indian politics this will be an election of hope. Because, the people have lost faith not only on Congress Party and its Prime Minister, but also on the system named government. That is why the first priority should be to get back the faith of the people.

The interview of Narendra Modi has been telecast on all ETV channels. It will be re-telecast at 8.30 pm during Central Hall Programme. Head of ETV News Network, Jagdish Chandra on this occasion said that during the Lok Sabha Elections, the channel has started a series of programmes for bringing national issues and opinions of national leaders on those issues to the common people. This series has started with the interview with Narendra Modi. Narendra Modi is believed to be very near to be the next Prime Minister. Nearly 240 channels’ applications are pending with Narendra Modi for getting his interview. But, to make reach his voice to 35 crore viewers, he chose first ETV.

For ETV’s programme “Central Hall”, Senior Journalist Harishankar Vyas took interview of  Narendra Modi. In reply to his question on “Congress Free India”, Modi said that it means Corruption free India, Dynasty free India, Free from Undemocratic methods, Free from misuse of constitutional agencies of India, Free from price rise and free from threat to India. Because, Congress has become a medium for all these. Hence Congress Free India call has been given. When, he is saying Congress free India, that means he is calling to free from the work culture that has been developed in India over sixty years by Congress. And also for the free from vote bank policy adopted by Congress.

On a question that previously some non-Congress governments also functioned similar to Congress during their tenure, Modi replied that except Atal Bihari Vajpayee, all others heading non-Congress governments, were having Congress Gotra (lineage). They had been groomed in Congress. Only due to personal differences or for any other political reasons they had been separated from Congress.

Narendra Modi also said that he has a clear picture in mind on what will be his priorities after forming government. Administrative system has to be revived to uplift the poor. Modi asserted that he doesn’t consider himself as Hero. His commitment is for the poor, farmer, youth, women and jawans.

Narendra Modi during his 66 minutes interview openly discussed on National and International issues, safety and army related issues and also on economic reforms issues. In between, the interview, ETV News Network Head Jagdish Chandra presenting the reviews said that Modi wants to implement the Gujarat Model across the nation, which will be a big challenge before him. In addition to this, Modi tried to refute the allegations labeled against him by highlighting economic issues. Assuring to spread Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s ambitious project of inter linking rivers, Modi hinted of bringing a new turn in economic system. Modi during the discussion also hinted that RSS life vision can be seen in his work style.

Commenting on UPA government, Narendra Modi said that their policies are of vote bank policies. They run the government to win  the elections and we want to run the government to empower the people. For them, grabbing power is everything, and we want to empower the people. Vote bank based policies empty the government treasury and term these as economic reforms. There is a need to weed out huge obsolete laws. Even after the files complete 40 Dhams (holy places), it never completes the journey. Modi also expressed his views on development of agriculture, Shipping Industry and tourism. On replying to a question, Modi said that his think tank will be 125 crore public.

Narendra Modi, showed interest in Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Sashtri. Replying a question on Health issues, Modi said that Gandhiji had always talked about hygiene, but we couldn’t teach our children about those culture. We will present a Clean India on Gandhiji’s 150th anniversary. We should think on being healthier than suffer from diseases. We want to set up one medical colleges in each district. Modi cleverly avoided the reservation issue and said that he raised the number of seats in Engineering and Medical Colleges to such an extent that everyone can get opportunity to study. He gave priority to increase job opportunities for youths.

Narendra Modi, during his interaction with ETV, for the first time spoke about his personal life and interests. He said that he likes to listen music, especially instrumental music. He also likes to trek in mountains and Himalaya is his favorite place. He used to read lot of books in his village library during childhood. But, now he doesn’t get time to read. He also said that he never dreamed of being something, and never told young people to dream to become someone. But, yes, he dreams to do something and advises the young to dream of doing something. And he left home, left family, and left village, only to do something for Mother India. Not to be something.

  • FremantleMedia International deal sees ‘Cuckoo Fly’ to Germany

FremantleMedia International deal sees ‘Cuckoo Fly’ to Germany

MUMBAI: FremantleMedia International and the world’s second largest public broadcaster, ARD in Germany, have completed a ground-breaking distribution deal for the first two series of the hit comedy, Cuckoo. The deal marks the first time in more than a decade that an acquired series has made it into ARD’s access prime time schedule, which before now has entirely focused on local productions. ARD look to premiere the series this Autumn 2014.

The latest sale for Cuckoo follows on from a deal completed with HBO Central Europe that sees the series go to 16 territories within the region. The sitcom can now be seen in over 70 territories worldwide including Australia (Foxtel), New Zealand (BBC), Russia (Amedia and 2×2) and Africa (MTV).

Produced by Roughcut TV for BBC3, the first series of Cuckoo (6 x 30’) pits Hollywood stalwart Andy Samberg against British comedy giant Greg Davies. Ken (Greg Davies) and Lorna Thompson’s (Helen Baxendale) daughter Rachel (Tamla Kari) has returned from her gap year with a new husband, Cuckoo – a self-appointed spiritual ninja and every parent’s worst nightmare. Ken and Lorna have no choice but to welcome him into their family home. The first series of the critically acclaimed Cuckoo was the biggest comedy launch in the UK’s BBC3’s history and was also nominated for two British Comedy Awards.

Series two begins as Cuckoo and Rachel renew their wedding vows and Cuckoo has left the family home to continue researching his book. While on walkabout in the foothills of the Himalayas, he went missing… eventually presumed dead. It has been two years since his disappearance and life in the Thompson family house is only just getting back to normal. Rachel is rebuilding her life with her new boyfriend, a nice-but-dull lawyer, Ben. Despite appearances, Cuckoo’s absence is still felt.

This fragile equilibrium is well and truly shattered when a handsome and mysterious young stranger (Taylor Lautner) appears in Lichfield as he tries to track down his father. The new cuckoo in the nest looks set to wreak as much havoc to the Thompsons family life as his dearly departed father.

Maximilian Bolenius, Vice President Sales & Distribution, German speaking Europe, Central & Eastern Europe, FremantleMedia International said: “For a broadcaster of ARD’s calibre to take Cuckoo as one of their very few foreign acquisitions in a long time, speaks volumes for the universal appeal of this stand out series. Cuckoo truly attracts viewers across all generations unlike many other new comedies from recent years. The addition of Hollywood A-lister Taylor Lautner for series two only enhances the series’ global potential.”

Cuckoo is executive produced by Ash Atalla (The IT Crowd, The Office andTrollied), series two is set to premiere on the UK’s BBC3.  Visit FremantleMedia at MIPTV 2014 at Stand No. C11.A1 (Croisette 11, Aisle 1), 7 – 10 April.
