  • Animal Planet brings new epic series ‘Africa’

Animal Planet brings new epic series ‘Africa’

MUMBAI: The award-winning documentary team behind the breakthrough natural history series Life returns with a revealing look at a seemingly familiar continent that is still holding many secrets. Four years in the making, ‘Africa’ premieres on Animal Planet on 7 January at 8 pm.  Airing every Wednesday, ‘Africa’ is an extraordinary series that brings to life the continent as never seen before, including never-before-filmed species, animal behaviors and secret, natural wonders of the world.

Travel to a secret location in southwest Africa to witness what could be the last great rhinoceros gathering on Earth, filmed with a newly developed camera system that is operated using the light of the stars and captures sound using microphones embedded around a watering hole. Track a teenage chimp in the Congo with a sweet tooth that drives her to perfect complicated honey-hunting techniques using four different tools. Meet some gutsy lizards who hunt for flies on the backs of sleeping lions in the Serengeti, a behavior never before captured on film. And see giraffes in a whole new way as two rival males in Namibia deliver sledgehammer-like blows on each other in a knockout fight for domination.

To capture on film these and other spectacular animal behaviors, the production team spent 1,598 days on location across 79 separate expeditions in 27 African countries. They utilized 21 different types of cameras to shoot more than 2,000 hours of footage. Of the 553 cameras deployed throughout the series, only eight were lost or damaged beyond repair.

The ‘Africa’ team’s extreme efforts are chronicled in the episode “Africa: the Making of..” Other episodes of the series uncover bizarre, brutal and newly discovered animal behaviors in the deserts of the Kalahari, the dense forests and snow-capped peaks of the Savannah, the dynamic Congo rainforest, the ever-changing climate of the Cape and the massive and parched Sahara desert. The greatest and most iconic wildlife continent is at a tipping point. The animals of the next generation will face very different challenges than the ones met by their ancestors – and the animals themselves must adapt to the new landscape and changing relationship with humans.

In the Savannah, the cameras track a giant but elusive bird known as the shoebill, and in the rainforest of the Congo, a chimp displays unusual honey-hunting skills.   In the episode, ‘AFRICA: the making of..’ cameras are turned on the crew as they hunt, capture, and react to memorable shots, including a gathering of elusive black rhino, the death of an elephant calf in the drought-stricken Amboseli National Park, and great whites feeding on a whale carcass according to size. Viewers will see a team that spent weeks in the forest searching for a teenage chimpanzee who uses four tools to steal honey, a duo that goes a little mad trying to calculate how fast silver ants move in the Sahara, and a cameraman who was left in complete darkness after a forest elephant chewed through a power cable and spent four hours trying to knock him loose from the tree in which he positioned himself overnight.

  • Discovery Channel to premiere ‘Eaten Alive?’ on 31 December

Discovery Channel to premiere ‘Eaten Alive?’ on 31 December

MUMBAI: On 31 December, Discovery Channel will present a never-seen-before deadly encounter – ‘Eaten Alive?’. The programme features snake researcher and conservationist Paul Rosolie, attempting to get eaten by the giant snake – alive. Paul has dedicated his career to study the Giant Green Anaconda, the largest and most powerful snake in the world and the top predator in the Amazon.  This challenge was created to get maximum attention for one of the most beautiful and threatened parts of the world, the Amazon Rainforest and its wildlife.

The two-hour special, ‘Eaten Alive?’ will premiere on Wednesday, 31 December at 8 pm on Discovery Channel.

Rosolie has specialised in the western Amazon for more than a decade and his efforts have helped bring awareness to the Peruvian Rainforest, the natural habitat of the Giant Green Anaconda.  This year, over a 60-day period, crews chronicled Rosolie’s expedition to the hidden realm deep within the Amazonian jungle. It is in this floating forest that Rosolie believes the largest anacondas in the world live and breed and one of the only locations to truly study these elusive and majestic snakes in the wild.  On his previous expedition to this secluded part of the Amazonian jungle, Rosolie was very close to capturing what he believed was the world’s largest anaconda, a 25 to 27-foot behemoth that slipped through his hands and nearly dragged him to the bottom of the floating forest.

“I’ve seen first-hand how the Amazon Rainforest is being destroyed.  It is so rampant that we may be the last generation with the opportunity to save it.  People need to wake up to what is going on,” said Paul Rosolie. “What better way is there to shock people than to put my life on the line with the largest snake on the planet, the Green Anaconda?”

Since Rosolie’s goal was to persevere through the constriction and potential ingestion deep into the belly of the beast, he relied on a custom-built suit he designed for his protection.  Constructed by Rosolie and his team of engineers working alongside herpetologists, the suit was built to ensure the snake’s safety just as much as it was to protect Rosolie’s life.  The highest measured force of an anaconda constriction has been documented at 90psi, which would be the equivalent of having a large school bus on one’s chest.  Since anacondas rely on their massive size and power to subdue their prey,  Rosolie risked life and limb in the hopes of measuring the constriction force of a massive anaconda, to gain more insight on its hunting and feeding behaviors, and ultimately, to gain a greater understanding of the inner workings of these majestic creatures.

Both Paul Rosolie and the Giant Green Anaconda are healthy and alive.

Tune in to watch Paul’s daring attempt to enter the belly of the beast, and his terrifying encounter with the massive snake.

  • Bangladesh gets archival footage from AIR, DD on Liberation War

Bangladesh gets archival footage from AIR, DD on Liberation War

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh President has received the recordings of transmissions made by All India Radio and Doordarshan during the Liberation War of 1971 from President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He recalled that valiant Mukti Bahini soldiers fought hand in hand with Indian troops for Bangladesh’s liberation. He expressed hope that these recordings will remind people of Bangladesh of those momentous times.

Akashvani, especially the Kolkata station, played a critical role in upholding the cause of Bangladesh even before the rest of the world woke up. Unfortunately, most of the broadcast schedule and other interesting programmes were not kept in permanent format as archives because of several constraints. But Akashvani has been able to retrieve several tapes of that period and has already broadcast them for the last many years, to remind both India and Bangladesh of their shared legacy.

At the request of Bangladesh Betar and the special interest of Mukherjee, a renewed effort was made by Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar, AIR DG F Sheryaar, and DDG, Akashvani Kolkata to salvage more materials from wherever possible so that whatever is possible is put out in the public domain before both the nations.

Two CDs have thus been produced in the last one month containing recordings from the Akashvani Archives of 1971 and early 1972. They represent the contribution made by Akashvani to the momentous developments of 1971, that led to the War in December, the Vijay Divas and the subsequent commemorations.

The first CD entitled “Liberation of Bangladesh 1971” contains the public speeches from Akashvani Delhi of the then Prime Minister of India and the Lok Sabha statements, interviews and speeches of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the surrender of Pakistani forces on the 16 December, the public address of Rahman in January 1972 and other programmes, that are mainly in Bengali.

The second CD entitled “Struggle of a Nation” is based on the recordings of Akashvani Kolkata, contains documentations of important happenings and events from March to December 1971 and the speeches of the then Prime Ministers of India and new nation of Bangladesh and live commentaries thereof.  It also has the ‘Samvad Bichitra’ newsreel programme that played a pivotal role during the Liberation Movement.

  • Jagran Solutions executes launch of Life OK’s ‘Mahakumbh’ in Varanasi

Jagran Solutions executes launch of Life OK’s ‘Mahakumbh’ in Varanasi

MUMBAI: Jagran Solutions, India’s leading brand activation agency that provides marketing services & experiential marketing solutions launched Life Ok’s newest show Mahakumbh’ in the holy city of Varanasi amid press & local people of the city.

Having executed a large number of shows for leading entertainment channels, Jagran Solutions bagged this account on the merit of executing events of such stature numerous times.

Serial Mahadev has been successfully running on Life OK for almost three years. For its replacement, the channel was looking for something related to “mythology” genre itself. That’s how ‘Mahakumbh’ came into existence. Keeping huge expectations out of the show that features Gautam Rode as Rudra, Life Ok wanted to launch the show in Varanasi as the city makes a perfect fit for launching such a show.

Jagran Solutions took the onus of creating & executing the event & press conference at two different venues in the city. Press Conference was held at Hotel Clark while the event took place at the bank of holy Ganges. In the evening the entire star cast of the Mahakumbh visited the ‘Dashashwamedh Ghat’: main ghat in Varanasi on the banks of Ganges River. A ‘riverside set up’ structured with Mahakumbh branding on backdrop and panels complimented the look of the ghat which witnessed an hour long Ganga Puja and Ganga Aarti.

Manoj Tiwari: one of the leading star of Bhojpuri films participated in singing some local folk songs at the stage. The entire star-cast of the show attended the ceremony from the stage. From Dashaswamedh the crew visited Raj Ghat to try some local food and addressed the local media. Attended by stars of television show, the event was covered by leading news channels like Aaj Tak, ABP News, India TV and Saharan News.

Jagran Solutions COO Pawan Bansal said, “This is the second time we have launched a product at the ghats of Varanasi. A show like Mahakumbh is made to appeal to the core audience of tier 2 cities. The event witnessed holy performances via various artists including Actors & Crew members of the show. The highlight of the event was larger than life Ganga Arti which made the backdrop for launching Mahakumbh.”  The show teasers are already on air & company has received a very encouraging response from the launch.
