    Sony Pictures Television, UNF to showcase emerging filmmakers

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Television Networks (SPTN), in partnership with the United Nations Foundation (UNF), has announced the opening of the Picture This Festival for the Planet, a short-film competition for emerging filmmakers to showcase the positive future they see for the planet. Starting 30 January, people from over 70 countries around the world are invited to submit videos between one and eight minutes in length inspired by the sustainable development goals (SDGs), a set of global goals agreed upon by all 193 member states of the United Nations to end poverty, protect the planet and promote prosperity for all.

    SPTN president Andy Kaplan said: “At Sony, we are proud champions of the intersection between storytelling and innovation and are incredibly excited to spearhead Picture This. With the support of the UNF and our other partners, we look forward to elevating and amplifying these important development goals through the voices of emerging creatives and acknowledge their good work in a meaningful way.”

    The partners in this year’s festival are:TheUnited Nations Foundation, the United Nations Association of the United States of America, WeTransfer, Sony World Photography Awards, Sony Alpha Universe,the Environmental Media Association and leaders and environmental visionariesfrom around the globe. SPTN launched a similar contest in 2016 across its channel portfolio worldwide, including its flagship brands AXN, Sony Channel, Crackle and Animax and those same flagship channels will participate in this year’s festival.

    MUMBAI: Moviebuff and 2D Entertainment have announced the launch of First Clap Season 2, the country’s only theatrically showcased talent hunt for aspiring filmmakers, back again with the challenge of creating a compelling story in three minutes on any subject. Knack Studios is supporting the initiative by extending free of charge its postproduction facilities, for processing the Digital Intermediate and 5.1 audio mix, to the top five winners prior to the theatrical screening. Moviebuff’s partner Little Shows will handle the online public voting process as they did last year. 

    The contest has a simple challenge – ‘Oru Kathai Sollunga’ – tell a story, in 3 minutes. First Clap is the only platform that brings aspiring filmmakers, production houses, cinema halls and avid audiences under one roof giving the creators an opportunity to realize the ultimate dream of seeing their work on the silver screen and showcasing their story to masses to experience their response.

    For all contestants, this is a chance to associate with industry bigwigs as well as have their creation shown on the big screen, ensuring a much wider reach and direct audience feedback. The maiden edition of the contest was screened in 170 theatres across 40 cities in Tamilnadu alone, with a minimum viewership of 34,35,432.

    The top three contestants will win cash prizes from 2D Entertainment and Moviebuff.com. The winner earns Rs. 3 lakhs in prize money while the first runner-up receives Rs. 2 lakhs and the second runner-up Rs. 1 lakh. The winner will be given an opportunity to narrate their script to renowned actor Suriya’s 2D Entertainment film production and distribution company, including an opportunity to intern with them.

    “A platform like First Clap helps us identify raw new talent and exposes us to various innovative stories.     The film that receives the highest number of votes will be declared the winner of the contest. Announcement of the winning entry is slated mid 2018.

Taking forward the brand’s core ethos of the ‘Good Samaritan’, the platform is set to host six short films inspired by the lives of real heroes, who have personified the value of righteousness in their deeds and action.

    The series will bring out heart-warming stories in an entertaining format of five minutes, of real heroes who through their extraordinary acts of kindness have inspired millions.     FTII short film fails to get the Cinéfondation award at Cannes Fest

    NEW DELHI: The only Indian film that had officially made it to Cannes – the short film from the Film and Television Institute of India – has failed to get any awards although it was among the sixteen films shortlisted by the Cinéfondation Selection of the Cannes International film festival to mark the twentieth year of this section.
    The film was ‘Afternoon Clouds’ by Payal Kapadia with duration of 13 minutes.

    The 16 films included 14 works of fiction and 2 animations from among the 2,600 works submitted this year by film schools from all over the world. Fourteen countries from three continents are represented. Four of the films selected come from schools taking part for the first time.

    The three Cinéfondation prizes that were awarded – in that order – are:

    The Cinéfondation allocates a €15,000 grant for the First Prize, €11,250 for the Second and €7,500 for the Third.

    The winner of the First Prize is also guaranteed the presentation of his/her first feature film at the Festival de Cannes.

    The awarded films will be screened at the Cinéma du Panthéon on 30 May.

    However, all the films of the Cinéfondation selection will be screened at the Cinémathèque française on 31 May and 1 June 2017.

    NEW DELHI: A short films competition on the theme of Risk Sensitive Development for Community Resilience will be organised at the Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016 being held here.

    The Conference is being organised from 3 to 5 November 2016 at Vigyan Bhawan by the Government in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). It will set the direction of implementation and monitoring of Sendai Framework in the region.

    Short films and educational documentaries have proved to be one of the effective mediums to strengthen understanding disaster resilience by showcasing community participation, success stories and best practices on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

    A highlight event of the AMCDRR 2016, this competition aims to showcase benefits of DRR policies, communities to nations and other stakeholders and to encourage increased investments in prevention and mitigation measures. Entries were called for under three categories: Positive Human Impact of DRR, DRR for Development and Adapting to Climate Change.

    The entries will be played at the venue throughout the conference duration on 3 and 4 November 2016. Three winners, one from each category, will be felicitated on the closing day of the Conference.

    AMCDRR 2016 will focus on collaboration, consultation and partnership with governments and stakeholders to mainstream DRR in the region’s socio-economic development.

    NEW DELHI: The AAFT Festival of short Digital Films at Marwah Studio has created a record of sorts. 

     

    Throwing light on the same, Marwah Studio president Sandeep Marwah said, “We have created a world record by touching the 86th edition of our festival. There is no other festival in the World to reach to 86th edition so far.”

     

    “This is the only festival, which has given opportunity to more than 2000 directors from all over the world to showcase their debut film in the last 22 years,” added AAFT dean Kalyan Sarkar.

     

    The films that were screened during the festival were: Taj Mahal – Crown of Earth directed by Aamir Naqvi, Maa Ki Aankh by Hitesh Tandon, Bloody Red by Anjali,Sunaina by Parvesh Saini, Side Effects of Criticism by Alok Chaturvedi and Masoom by Nikhil Kapoor.

     

    “This is for the first time in the world that any film school has adapted a historical monument – A Wonder of The World – as a part of its syllabus for making and studying cinema,” Marwah added.

     

    AAFT also celebrated its curtain raiser a day before where Ecuador Ambassador Mentor Villagomez released the poster of the festival. He was also accompanied by Dr. Patricio Garces, Head of political and cultural affairs in the Ecuador Embassy.

    MUMBAI: Yes Foundation, the social development arm of Yes Bank, is giving the public an opportunity to select the winners of India’s largest social film movement – YES! I am the CHANGE.  

     

    The top 50 short film entries have been shortlisted and will now compete for the Indian social filmmaking challenge 2014. The five minute long films represent the true spirit of positive social change and touched on social topics including education, women’s safety, women empowerment, animal care and responsible citizenship.

     

    The main aim of this campaign is to spread mass awareness about social causes through the thought provoking films made by youth participants. Over 72,000 viewers have already participated and voted for the popular choice awards. The public can watch the films Yes Foundation India’s YouTube channel and vote for their favourite film. The film with the largest number of likes will be adjudged the winner. Voting ends on 31 January 2015. 

     

    The top three winners of the YES! I am the CHANGE popular choice awards will receive prizes worth Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.

     

    This programme is mentored by eminent filmmakers and educationists including Shoojit Sircar, Vikramaditya Motwane, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Pritish Nandy, Guneet Monga, Kailash Surendranath, Dr. Indu Shahani, Dr. Nagesh Rao and Nina Lath amongst others.
