  • Punjab’s cinema makes waves worldwide

    Punjab’s cinema makes waves worldwide

MUMBAI: Punjab is not just about bhangra and beats anymore. At the FICCI Frames 2025, a lively panel explored how Punjabi cinema is evolving beyond comedy and song-and-dance routines into micro-dramas, socially rooted stories, and web series that resonate both at home and with the global diaspora.

Moderated by filmmaker Rohit Jugraj Chauhan, the session featured actors and creators like Manav Vij, Rajiv Thakur, Dheeraj Ratan, Rhea Arora, and Ujjwal Mahajan of Chaupal OTT. The panel delved into how streaming platforms and social media are giving Punjabi stories unprecedented reach.

Chaupal OTT co-founder Ujjwal Mahajan explained the digital revolution behind Punjabi storytelling. “Chaupal is not just a platform; it’s a digital chowpal. Wherever Punjabis are, they can reconnect with home through our content. Every three days we add a new movie, and the momentum is only increasing.” He emphasised the distinction between “Punjab-based content” and true “Punjabi content,” pointing to titles like Satpanchi that resonate with cultural roots.

Comedian-turned-actor Rajiv Thakur reflected on the diaspora’s influence and talent in Bollywood. “Punjabis have always contributed massively, whether in comedy, music, or film. Our language, our stories, our culture matter. There’s power in Punjabiyat,” he said, noting the balancing act actors face between Mumbai and Punjab audiences.

Screenwriter and director Dheeraj Ratan traced the evolution of Punjabi cinema. “There was a time when you had to go to Bombay to make films. Now high-standard storytelling has returned to Punjab. Our films are visually strong and culturally rooted, and the market is responding,” he explained. He urged creators to establish local infrastructure to unleash the region’s vast talent and tell stories the world can watch.

Manav Vij described how Punjabi cinema is reshaping itself for a global audience. “Cinema has its own language of empathy. We need pathways to run freely, to make films the way we want. Punjabi culture has a value that deserves to be seen and heard globally.”

Rhea Arora, who has been pivotal in developing Punjab’s AVGC and animation ecosystem, highlighted how local talent is being nurtured. “We’ve brought art from Punjab to Mumbai and back. Creative talents are thriving, and the industry is evolving thanks to associations and government support.”

The panel concluded with a clear takeaway: Punjabi cinema is no longer just regional flair. From micro-dramas to mainstream hits, the state is staking a claim on global storytelling, powered by culture, community, and creativity.

  • Gujarati blockbuster Jhamkudi haunts Hindi screens on ShemarooMe

Gujarati blockbuster Jhamkudi haunts Hindi screens on ShemarooMe

MUMBAI: Witching hour just struck again, this time in Hindi. After smashing box office records in Gujarati cinema, supernatural horror-comedy Jhamkudi is now ready to spook and tickle audiences across India with its Hindi world digital premiere on ShemarooMe from 18 September 2025.

The film, which stars National award-winner Manasi Parekh and viral comic sensation Viraj Ghelani, has already carved a cult following. Set in the cursed village of Raniwada, it weaves together folklore, frights and funny bones, with a vengeful witch unleashing chaos during Navratri. But unlike your average haunted tale, Jhamkudi balances scares with laugh-out-loud moments, and even a rap-style title track sung by Parekh herself.

Shot inside the 500-year-old Gondal Palace, where whispers of real ghost stories floated through the crew, the film oozes atmosphere and authenticity. directed by Umang Vyas, it boasts a stellar ensemble including Ojas Rawal, Sanjay Goradia, Jayesh More and Bhavini Jani.

Reflecting on the film’s Hindi debut, Parekh said, “We wanted to explore horror-comedy in Gujarati cinema, and the audience response has been overwhelming. Bringing Jhamkudi to a wider audience in Hindi feels like the natural next step: it’s fun, spooky and full of madness.”

Ghelani, who dubbed his own Hindi lines, added, “This film marked my debut and will always be close to my heart. Reliving the character in Hindi was such a joy, and I hope viewers everywhere connect with the humour and thrills.”

With its mix of scares, satire and superstition, Jhamkudi is now spreading Gujarati cinema’s magic beyond borders. For ShemarooMe, it’s another step in making regional blockbusters mainstream, giving India’s diverse stories the stage, and the scares, they deserve.

  • Women-focused Marathi film Stahl to get theatrical release on 7 March

Women-focused Marathi film Stahl to get theatrical release on 7 March

MUMBAI: A Marathi film about a young girl who is dark complexioned, is short, lives in Dongargaon  village in the Chandrapur District of Maharashtra,, whose parents want to marry her off, but who wants to study  is a sure shot to get audiences in to cinema halls, right?

The premise is going to be tested come 7 March 2025 when Sthal (A Match) is to be released. The film’s poster was revealed  on 3 March by veteran actor Sachin Pilgaonkar to mark the birth anniversary of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule. Sachin is also presenting the film.

Written and directed by by Jayant Digambar Somalkar and produced by Dhun Productions (Karan Grover, Shefali Bhushan, Jayant Digambar Somalkar & Riga Malhotra), the film’s ensemble cast consists of first time actors from Dongargaon : Nandini Chikte as the protagonist Savita along with Taranath Khiratkar, Sangita Sonekar, Suyog Dhawas, Sandip Somalkar, Sandip Parkhi, Swati Ulmale, Gauri Badki and Mansi Pawar.

So far it has won a lot of accolades in the festival circuit: it premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the Netpac  award for the Best Asia Pacific film.. This was followed by screenings at 29 major film festivals and it has picked up 16 awards, creating a buzz in the film industry.

“This film rooted in the rural culture of Maharashtra got such an overwhelming response even from the Marathi diaspora in America, that I immediately offered my support in every way to  director Jayant,” said Pilgaonkar.

“Through this film, my goal as a director is to bring out the realities faced by young women like Savita, who are almost sacrificed in the urgency for getting them ‘married off.’ The film delves into themes of patriarchy, colorism, and societal pressures,” says Jayant. “The visual aesthetic of the film reflects the stark reality of rural India, capturing the beauty of the landscape as also the harshness of everyday life. The use of the traditional folk music makes the viewer connect to the events in a more experiential way while the western, brings the characters’ dreams alive surrealistically.  Through this film, I hope to spark conversations around the tradition of arranged marriage, gender inequality, and the pressing need for change.”

“I feel it is so appropriate that we are releasing Sthal on the eve of International Women’s  Day,”  shares producer Shefali Bhusan.” because in big and small ways the film questions patriarchy and celebrates womanhood.”

Now let’s hope the Marathi film watching audience resonates with twhat she is saying.

  • The Hema Committee Report: Is Indian cinema facing a new dark chapter?

The Hema Committee Report: Is Indian cinema facing a new dark chapter?

Mumbai: “Do not trust what you see; even salt looks like sugar!” A provocative line from the controversial Hema Committee Report, made public by the Kerala government last month, has ignited widespread controversy and debate. The report has prompted numerous actors to share their experiences, leading to an outcry in Kerala and raising crucial questions about the state of the Malayalam film industry.

Malayalam cinema has long been celebrated for its progressive portrayal of women. Yet, recent revelations suggest a disturbing hypocrisy within the industry—a stark contrast to its outwardly feminist stance. The report has triggered a significant uproar, shedding light on issues of abuse, misogyny and inequality.

    How it all began?

The crisis in the Malayalam film industry began with a shocking incident involving South Indian actress Bhavana Menon, who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in broad daylight by a group of men back in 2017. The attack sent shockwaves through the industry, leading to the arrest of actor Dileep on charges of criminal conspiracy. Although Dileep, a major figure in Malayalam cinema, has denied the allegations, as the case remains unresolved in court.

The horrific details of the crime initially spurred public outrage and a police investigation. As the public attention waned, women in the industry rallied together in solidarity, culminating in the formation of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) on 1 November, 2017.

    Formation of the report

In its early years, the WCC focused on combating sexual harassment and addressing gender disparity and poor employment conditions in Malayalam cinema. In response, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan established a three-member expert committee led by former Kerala high court judge K. Hema, alongside veteran actor Sarada and ex-IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari. The Hema Committee conducted a thorough investigation from November 2017 and submitted its final report on 31 December, 2019.

The 235-page report, compiled by the panel, exposed the tight grip held by a small group of male producers, directors, and actors over the industry. This control has perpetuated a culture of abuse and inequality.

    Disturbing details in the report

Though the report refrained from naming specific individuals, its revelations have reverberated throughout the industry. According to sources, some sections of the report were redacted, leading to speculation that influential figures are being shielded. The report detailed numerous instances of harassment, including allegations of male actors, producers, and directors demanding sexual favors and subjecting those who refused to mental torment, such as repeatedly forcing intimate scenes.

The report also highlighted the struggles faced by male actors, including unauthorised bans from working in the industry. Many men, including prominent artists, have been reluctant to speak out for fear of jeopardising their careers. The report described the Malayalam film industry as being under the control of a “mafia” of powerful male figures who wield the authority to ruin careers and enforce their will.

    Reactions

Following the report’s release, several women have come forward with their stories. One actress accused veteran actor Siddique of rape and harassment when she was 19. Although she initially faced skepticism, the release of the Hema Committee report has given her claims renewed attention. In response to these allegations, Siddique resigned from his position as General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

Actor Mohanlal had resigned from his post as president of the AMMA amid sexual assault cases against top office bearers Siddique, Baburaj and other actors such as Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju and Jayasurya.

Actor Mammootty wrote in a Facebook post that the industry wholeheartedly welcomes and supports the recommendations and solutions outlined in that report. He also stated it is high time that all associations in the film industry join hands to implement them.

In a similar fashion, both the actors have been facing criticism in the public sphere for being silent on the Hema committee report, which was made public on 19 August. According to media reports, Mohanlal, while welcoming the report, had also said that issues that are happening in the other sectors are part of cinema too.

    Legal actions

At the time of writing, the special bench of Kerala high court that was tasked with hearing the cases related to the Hema Committee report came down heavily upon the Pinarayi Vijayan government for its inaction over the disclosures made in the report, which looked into the challenges faced by women in the Kerala film industry. The special bench comprising Justices AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and CS Sudha was constituted by the HC on 5 September and directed that the full report be handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to take requisite action.

“We are surprised by this inaction. When it received the report or when DGP was given a copy in Feb 2021, some action must have been taken. Assuring confidentiality of women, we understand that. But the state govt is confronted with practices derogatory to women, what has it done? What is it that you are doing to address problems facing women, not just in cinema?” the court asked. Further, stating that this was a problem affecting the majority in the state, the court observed that it cannot be silent.

Key lessons for the Indian film industry to be taken in consideration

The Hema Committee Report has empowered many women in the industry to share their harrowing experiences, triggering a new wave of #MeToo activism in Kerala. While this was just a tip of the iceberg, many disturbing stories remain untold. The report exposes the urgent need to address women’s safety and challenging the wretched patriarchal values within the industry.

While such instances are not surprisingly uncommon in Indian cinema, the recent surge in crimes against women and the silence of many male industry figures reveal a troubling disconnect between public statements and private attitudes, showcasing the industry has indeed entered a new dark chapter. It is crucial for Indian cinema to confront these issues openly, tackle its internal problems and create safer environments for all its members.
