  • Dreamworks to make The Good Luck Trolls

MUMBAI: In an agreement with Denmark‘s Dam Things, DreamWorks Animation (DWA) will develop an animated feature The Good Luck Trolls.

In 1959, the troll doll was created by Danish fisherman and woodcutter Thomas Dam, when he carved a doll based on Scandinavian trolls for his daughter Lajla. The toy line gained popularity in Europe and the US during the early ‘60s thus becoming a fad embraced by kids and the counter-culture.

Because Dam Things lost control of its copyright after failing to comply with US laws, imitators flooded the market in the ‘70s and ‘80s. But soon after a 1994 Congressional law that restored copyright protection to a number of foreign works, the Dam family regained authority.

In striking the deal with DWA, Niels Dam, the dollmaker‘s son said, “My father would have been very happy to know that his Troll has found its dream partner in DreamWorks Animation.”

Said DWA head of development Alex Schwartz, “We look forward to working alongside Dam Things to build on the mythology of the Good Luck Trolls while delivering the sense of adventure, heart and comedy that DreamWorks Animation is known for.”

  • Pyramid Saimira: Trading ban on Saminathan continues

MUMBAI: Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has decided not to withdraw the ban order against Chennai-based Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd (PSTL) MD PS Saminathan.

Sebi had imposed interim direction on Saminathan and other promoter Nirmal N Kotecha in April last year and had barred both from trading in securities till further notice. The regulator alleged PSTL for misconduct, forging a Sebi letter and of making misleading public announcements.

Shortly thereafter, Saminathan had requested Sebi to withdraw interim directions. However, in its order on Monday, Sebi turned it down saying that it did not find Saminathan‘s explanation convincing.

Saminathan explained that he had bought shares only for the purpose of raising money for PSTL. The Sebi also questioned Saminathan‘s announcement to the stock exchanges that he proposed to acquire 704.5 million shares of PSTL from promoters at Rs 200 a share. Sebi rejected Saminathan‘s submissions defending his actions “without merit”.

In November last year the regulator banned PSTL for seven years from the market.
